Abstract:In this paper, we refine a result of Andrews and Merca on truncated pentagonal number series. Subsequently, we establish some positivity results involving Andrews--Gordon--Bressoud identities and $d$-regular partitions. In particular, we prove several conjectures of Merca and Krattenthaler--Merca--Radu on truncated pentagonal number series.

Abstract:In 2012, Andrews and Merca obtained a truncated version of Euler's pentagonal number theorem and showed the nonnegativity related to partition functions. Meanwhile, Andrews-Merca and Guo-Zeng independently conjectured that the truncated Jacobi triple product series has nonnegative coefficients, which has been confirmed analytically and also combinatorially. In 2022, Merca proposed a stronger version for this conjecture. In this paper, by applying Agarwal, Andrews and Bressoud's Bailey lattice, we derive a truncated version for the Jacobi triple product series with odd basis which reduces to the Andrews-Gordon identity as a special instance. As consequences, we obtain new truncated forms for Euler's pentagonal number theorem, Gauss'theta series on triangular numbers and square numbers, which lead to inequalities for certain partition functions. Moreover, by considering a truncated theta series involving $\ell$-regular partitions, we confirm a conjecture proposed by Ballantine and Merca about 6-regular partitions and show that Merca's stronger conjecture on truncated Jacobi triple product series holds when $R = 3S$ for $S \geq 1.$

A general positivity result on coefficients of certain $q$-series

Abstract:Based on a classical result on partitions of an integer into a finite set of positive integers, we establish a general positivity result on coefficients of certain $q$-series which uniformly refines the positivity of truncated pentagonal number series, truncated Gauss' identities and some special cases of truncated Jacobi triple product identity. As an application, we prove two positivity conjectures due to Merca.

Abstract:In 2012, Andrews and Merca established a truncated form of Euler's pentagonal number theory. In this note, using the Rogers–Fine identity, we present a partition theoretic interpretation of truncated sums on the partition function which solve a problem given by Merca. Furthermore, we prove an inequality on ordinary partition which implies the positive result on truncated sums of partition function due to Andrews and Merca.

Abstract:In their study of the truncation of Euler's pentagonal number theorem, Andrews and Merca introduced a partition function Mk(n) to count the number of partitions of n in which k is the least integer that is not a part and there are more parts exceeding k than there are below k . In recent years, two conjectures concerning Mk(n) on truncated theta series were posed by Andrews, Merca, and Yee. In this paper, we prove that the two conjectures are true for sufficiently large n whenever k is fixed.

Abstract:In 2012, Andrews and Merca proved a truncated theorem on Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Their work has opened up a new study of truncated series. Recently, Ballantine and Merca posed a conjecture on infinite families of inequalities involving b6(n) , which counts the number of 6-regular partitions of n . In this paper, we confirm Ballantine and Merca's conjecture on linear equalities of b6(n) based on a formula of the number of partitions of n into parts not exceeding 3 due to Cayley.

Abstract:The truncated series start off with Andrews and Merca's truncated version of Euler's pentagonal number theorem in 2012. Moreover, Andrews--Merca and Guo--Zeng independently conjectured that the truncated Jacobi triple product series has nonnegative coefficients, which has been proved analytically by Mao and combinatorially by Yee. In 2021, Merca gave a stronger version for the truncated Jacobi triple product series(JTPS). Some very spcial cases of the conjecture have been proved by Ballantine--Feigon, Ding-Sun and Zhou. On the one hand, we consider the partial finite denomintor of the stronger truncated JTPS series with Residue theorem and prove that the coefficients of $ q^{n} $ in the series are positive when $ n $ greater than a finite constant. On the other hand, for the infinte denomintor, we deduce an asymptotic of nonmodular infinite products and therefore prove Merca's conjecture when $ n $ greater than a constant. We also show than when $ k $ is large enough, the infinte denomintor can be ignored and the Conjecture holds as a corollary.

Truncated Theta Series Related to the Jacobi Triple Product Identity

Abstract:The work of Andrews and Merca on the truncated Euler's pentagonal number theorem led to a resurgence in research on truncated theta series identities. In particular, Yee proved a truncated version of the Jacobi Triple Product (JTP) identity. Recently, Merca conjectured a stronger form of the truncated JTP identity. In this article we prove the first three cases of the conjecture and several related truncated identities. We prove combinatorially an identity related to the JTP identity which in particular cases reduces to identities conjectured by Merca and proved analytically by Krattenthaler, Merca and Radu. Moreover, we introduce a new combinatorial interpretation for the number of distinct 5-regular partitions of n.

Abstract:We revisit Euler's partition function recurrence, which asserts, for integers $n\geq 1,$ that $$ p(n)=p(n-1)+p(n-2)-p(n-5)-p(n-7)+\dots = \sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}} (-1)^{k+1} p(n-\omega(k)), $$ where $\omega(m):=(3m^2+m)/2$ is the $m$th pentagonal number. We prove that this classical result is the $\nu=0$ case of an infinite family of ``pentagonal number'' recurrences. For each $\nu\geq 0,$ we prove for positive $n$ that $$ p(n)=\frac{1}{g_{\nu}(n,0)}\left(\alpha_{\nu}\cdot \sigma_{2\nu-1}(n)+ \mathrm{Tr}_{2\nu}(n) +\sum_{k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}} (-1)^{k+1} g_{\nu}(n,k)\cdot p(n-\omega(k))\right), $$ where $\sigma_{2\nu-1}(n)$ is a divisor function, $\mathrm{Tr}_{2\nu}(n)$ is the $n$th weight $2\nu$ Hecke trace of values of special twisted quadratic Dirichlet series, and each $g_{\nu}(n,k)$ is a polynomial in $n$ and $k.$ The $\nu=6$ case can be viewed as a partition theoretic formula for Ramanujan's tau-function, as we have $$ \mathrm{Tr}_{12}(n)=-\frac{33108590592}{691}\cdot \tau(n). $$

Asymptotic formulas for the coefficients of the truncated theta series

Abstract:Motivated by the groundbreaking work of Andrews and Merca, truncated theta series have been extensively studied over the years. In particular, Merca made conjectures on the non-negativity of the coefficient of $q^N$ in truncated series from the Jacobi triple product identity and the quintuple product identity. In this paper, using Wright's Circle Method, we establish asymptotic formulas for the coefficients of truncated theta series and prove that Merca's conjectures are true for sufficiently large $N$.

A bijection proof of Andrews-Merca integer partition theorem

Abstract:Andrews and Merca [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 203 (2024), Art. 105849] recently obtained two interesting results on the sum of the parts with the same parity in the partitions of $n$ (the modulo $2$ case), the proof of which relies on generating functions. Motivated by Andrews and Merca's results, we define six statistics related to the partitions of $n$ and show that the two triples of the six statistics are equidistributed. From this equidistributed result, we derive modulo $m$ extensions of Andrews and Merca's results for all integers $m\ge 2$. The proof of the main result is based on a general bijection on the set of partitions of $n$.

Abstract:The Catalan numbers $C_k$ were first studied by Euler, in the context of enumerating triangulations of polygons $P_{k+2}$. Among the many generalizations of this sequence, the Fuss-Catalan numbers $C^{(d)}_k$ count enumerations of dissections of polygons $P_{k(d-1)+2}$ into $(d+1)$-gons. In this paper, we provide a formula enumerating polygonal dissections of $(n+2)$-gons, classified by partitions $\lambda$ of $[n]$. We connect these counts $a_{\lambda}$ to reverse series arising from iterated polynomials. Generalizing this further, we show that the coefficients of the reverse series of polynomials $x=z-\sum_{j=0}^{\infty} b_j z^{j+1}$ enumerate colored polygonal dissections.

Abstract:Motivated by recent work of George Andrews and Mircea Merca [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 119 (2012), pp. 1639–1643] on the expansion of the quotient of the truncation of Euler's pentagonal number series by the complete series, we provide similar expansion results for averages involving truncations of selected, more general, basic hypergeometric series. In particular, our expansions include new results for averaged truncations of the series appearing in the Jacobi triple product identity, the q q -Gauß summation, and the very-well-poised 5 φ 5 {}_5\phi _5 summation. We show how special cases of our expansions can be used to recover various existing results. In addition, we establish new inequalities, such as one for a refinement of the number of partitions into three different colors.

Abstract:The pentagonal numbers are the integers given by$ p_5(n) = n(3n-1)/2\ (n = 0,1,2,\ldots) $.Let $ (b,c,d) $ be one of the triples $ (1,1,2),(1,2,3),(1,2,6) $ and $ (2,3,4) $.We show that each $ n = 0,1,2,\ldots $ can be written as $ w+bx+cy+dz $ with $ w,x,y,z $ pentagonal numbers, which was first conjectured by Z.-W. Sun in 2016. In particular, any nonnegative integeris a sum of five pentagonal numbers two of which are equal; this refines a classical resultof Cauchy claimed by Fermat.

Abstract:Let NT ( m , k , n ) denote the total number of parts in the partitions of n with rank congruent to m modulo k . Andrews proved Beck's conjecture on congruences for NT ( m , k , n ) modulo 5 and 7. Generalizing Andrews' results, Chern obtained congruences for NT ( m , k , n ) modulo 11 and 13. More recently, the second author used the theory of Hecke operators to establish congruences for such partition statistics modulo powers of primes . In this paper, we obtain Andrews-Beck type congruences modulo powers of 5.

Abstract:Using a specific form of the triple product identity, polygonal number identities are stated. Further number identities are examined that can be considered identities related to modular sets of numbers. The identities can be used to give results on integer partitions with parts from numbers in modular arithmetic progression. This includes recursive formulas for the number of partitions using these modular parts. The triple product identity can derive further recursive formulas. Additionally, there is a recursive formula for the related sum of divisors function. The specific triple product identity provides a framework to examine all the identities and can be used to define related theta functions.

Positroids, knots, and $q,t$-Catalan numbers

Abstract:We relate the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of open positroid varieties (in particular, their Betti numbers over $\mathbb{C}$ and point counts over $\mathbb{F}_q$) to Khovanov--Rozansky homology of associated links. We deduce that the mixed Hodge polynomials of top-dimensional open positroid varieties are given by rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Via the curious Lefschetz property of cluster varieties, this implies the $q,t$-symmetry and unimodality properties of rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. We show that the $q,t$-symmetry phenomenon is a manifestation of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$, and discuss relations with open Richardson varieties and extension groups of Verma modules.

Abstract:We provide combinatorial tools inspired by work of Warnaar to give combinatorial interpretations of the sum sides of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities. More precisely, we give an explicit weight- and length-preserving bijection between sets related to integer partitions, which provides these interpretations. In passing, we discover the $q$-series version of an identity of Kurşungöz, similar to the Bressoud identity but with opposite parity conditions, which we prove combinatorially using the classical Bressoud identity and our bijection. We also use this bijection to prove combinatorially many identities, some known and other new, of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type.
