Abstract:We provide a direct correspondence between the $b$-Hurwitz numbers with $b=1$ from \cite{ChapuyDolega}, and twisted Hurwtiz numbers from \cite{TwistedHurwitz}. This provides a description of real coverings of the sphere with ramification on the real line in terms of monodromy.

Abstract:Hurwitz numbers count covers of curves satisfying fixed ramification data. Via monodromy representation, this counting problem can be transformed to a problem of counting factorizations in the symmetric group. This and other beautiful connections make Hurwitz numbers a longstanding active research topic. In recent work Chapuy and Dolęga, a new enumerative invariant called b-Hurwitz number was introduced, which enumerates non-orientable branched coverings. For b=1, we obtain twisted Hurwitz numbers which were linked to surgery theory in work of Burman and Fesler and admit a representation as factorisations in the symmetric group. In this paper, we derive a tropical interperetation of twisted Hurwitz numbers in terms of tropical covers and study their polynomial structure.

Abstract:Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched morphisms between Riemann surfaces. For a fixed elliptic target, Hurwitz numbers are intimately related to mirror symmetry following work of Dijkgraaf. In recent work of Chapuy and Dolega a new variant of Hurwitz numbers with fixed genus $0$ target was introduced that includes maps between between non-orientiable surfaces. These numbers are called $b$-Hurwitz numbers and are polynomials in a parameter $b$ which measures the non-orientability of the involved maps. An interpretation in terms of factorisations of $b$-Hurwitz numbers for $b=1$, so-called twisted Hurwitz numbers, was found in work of Burman and Fesler. In previous work, the authors derived a tropical geometry interpretation of these numbers. In this paper, we introduce a natural generalisation of twisted Hurwitz numbers with elliptic targets within the framework of symmetric groups. We derive a tropical interpretation of these invariants, relate them to Feynman integrals and derive an expression as a matrix element of an operator in the bosonic Fock space.

Abstract:We present a new method, using asymptotic analysis, to obtain a system of recursion relations for integrals on moduli spaces of curves. By applying the asymptotic analysis on the join-cut relation of the ELSV formula, we derive the recursion relation of R. Dijkgraaf and E. and H. Verlinde, which is exactly the Virasoro constraints for topological gravity. This gives an alternative proof of Wittens Conjecture using asymptotic analysis.

Abstract:Given a smooth, projective curve $Y$, a point $y_0 \in Y$, a positive integer $n$, and a transitive subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_{d}$ we study smooth, proper families, parameterized by algebraic varieties, of pointed degree $d$ covers of $(Y,y_0)$, $(X,x_{0})\to (Y,y_0)$, branched in $n$ points of $Y\setminus y_{0}$, whose monodromy group equals $G$. We construct a Hurwitz space $H$, an algebraic variety whose points are in bijective correspondence with the equivalence classes of pointed covers of $(Y,y_0)$ of this type. We construct explicitly a family parameterized by $H$, whose fibers belong to the corresponding equivalence classes, and prove that it is universal. We use classical tools of algebraic topology and of complex algebraic geometry.

$b$-Hurwitz numbers from Whittaker vectors for $\mathcal{W}$-algebras

Abstract:We show that $b$-Hurwitz numbers with a rational weight are obtained by taking an explicit limit of a Whittaker vector for the $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of type $A$. Our result is a vast generalization of several previous results that treated the monotone case, and the cases of quadratic and cubic polynomial weights. It also provides an interpretation of the associated Whittaker vector in terms of generalized branched coverings that might be of independent interest. Our result is new even in the special case $b=0$ that corresponds to classical hypergeometric Hurwitz numbers, and implies that they are governed by the topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin. This gives an independent proof of the recent result of Bychkov-Dunin-Barkowski-Kazarian-Shadrin.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

The structure of Hurwitz numbers with fixed ramification profile and varying genus

Abstract:In 1891, Hurwitz introduced the enumeration of genus $g$, degree $d$, branched covers of the Riemann sphere with simple ramification over prescribed points and no branching elsewhere. He showed that for fixed degree $d$, the enumeration possesses a remarkable structure. More precisely, it can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentials $m^{2g-2+2d}$, where $m$ ranges over the integers from $1$ to $\binom{d}{2}$. In this paper, we generalise this structural result to Hurwitz numbers that enumerate branched covers which also have a prescribed ramification profile over one point. Our proof fundamentally uses the infinite wedge space, in particular the connected correlators of products of $\mathcal{E}$-operators. The recent study of Hurwitz numbers has often focussed on their structure with fixed genus and varying ramification profile. Our main result is orthogonal to this, allowing for the explicit calculation and the asymptotic analysis of Hurwitz numbers in large genus. We pose the broad question of which other enumerative problems exhibit analogous structure. We prove that orbifold Hurwitz numbers can also be expressed as a linear combination of exponentials and conjecture that monotone Hurwitz numbers share a similar structure, but with the inclusion of an additional linear term.

Abstract:Given a smooth, projective curve $Y$, a finite group $G$ and a positive integer $n$ we study smooth, proper families $X\to Y\times S\to S$ of Galois covers of $Y$ with Galois group isomorphic to $G$ branched in $n$ points, parameterized by algebraic varieties $S$. When $G$ is with trivial center we prove that the Hurwitz space $H^G_n(Y)$ is a fine moduli variety for this moduli problem and construct explicitly the universal family. For arbitrary $G$ we prove that $H^G_n(Y)$ is a coarse moduli variety. For families of pointed Galois covers of $(Y,y_0)$ we prove that the Hurwitz space $H^G_n(Y,y_0)$ is a fine moduli variety, and construct explicitly the universal family, for arbitrary group $G$. We use classical tools of algebraic topology and of complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:We study the number of rational points of smooth projective curves over finite fields in some relative situations in the spirit of a previous paper from an euclidean point of vue. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.

Abstract:We study a $b$-deformation of monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We give an evolution equation for this model and derive from it Virasoro constraints, thereby proving a conjecture of Féray on Jack characters. A combinatorial model of non-oriented monotone Hurwitz maps which generalizes monotone transposition factorizations is provided. In the case $b=1$ we obtain an explicit Schur expansion of the model and show that it obeys the BKP integrable hierarchy. This Schur expansion also proves a conjecture of Oliveira--Novaes relating zonal polynomials with irreducible representations of $O(N)$. We also relate the model to an $O(N)$ version of the Brézin--Gross--Witten integral, which we solve explicitly in terms of Pfaffians in the case of even multiplicities.

Abstract:Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles are standard Hurwitz numbers with simple branch points replaced by completed cycles. In fact, simple branch points correspond to completed $2$-cycles. Okounkov and Pandharipande have established the remarkable GW/H correspondence, saying that the stationary sectors of the Gromov--Witten theory relative to $r$ points equal Hurwitz numbers with $r$ branch points besides the completed cycles. However, from the viewpoint of computation, known results for Hurwitz numbers (standard or with completed cycles) are mainly for $r\leq 2$. It is hard to obtain explicit formulas and then discuss the structural properties for the cases $r>2$. In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the case $r=3$ and uncover a number of structural properties of these Hurwitz numbers. For instance, we discover a piecewise polynomiality with respect to the orders of the completed cycles in addition to the parts of the profiles of branch points as usual, we show that certain hook-shape Hurwitz numbers are building blocks of all our Hurwitz numbers, and we prove an analogue of the celebrated $\lambda_g$-conjecture.

Abstract:We express correlators of the Jacobi $\beta$ ensemble in terms of (a special case of) $b$-Hurwitz numbers, a deformation of Hurwitz numbers recently introduced by Chapuy and Dolega. The proof relies on Kadell's generalization of the Selberg integral. The Laguerre limit is also considered. All the relevant $b$-Hurwitz numbers are interpreted (following Bonzom, Chapuy, and Dolega) in terms of colored monotone Hurwitz maps.

Abstract:We explicitly identify the algebra generated by symplectic Fourier-Deligne transforms (i.e. convolution with Kazhdan-Laumon sheaves) acting on the Grothendieck group of perverse sheaves on the basic affine space $G/U$, answering a question originally raised by A. Polishchuk. We show it is isomorphic to a distinguished subalgebra, studied by I. Marin, of the generalized algebra of braids and ties (defined in Type $A$ by F. Aicardi and J. Juyumaya and generalized to all types by Marin), providing a connection between geometric representation theory and an algebra defined in the context of knot theory. Our geometric interpretation of this algebra entails some algebraic consequences: we obtain a short and type-independent geometric proof of the braid relations for Juyumaya's generators of the Yokonuma-Hecke algebra (previously proved case-by-case in types $A, D, E$ by Juyumaya and separately for types $B, C, F_4, G_2$ by Juyumaya and S. S. Kannan), a natural candidate for an analogue of a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis, and finally an explicit formula for the dimension of Marin's algebra in Type $A_n$ (previously only known for $n \leq 4$).

Abstract:We prove that any geometrically connected curve $X$ over a field $k$ is an algebraic $K(\pi,1)$, as soon as its geometric irreducible components have nonzero genus. This means that the cohomology of any locally constant constructible étale sheaf of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-modules, with $n$ invertible in $k$, is canonically isomorphic to the cohomology of its corresponding $\pi_1(X)$-module. To this end, we explicitly construct some Galois coverings of $X$ corresponding to Galois coverings of the normalisation of its irreducible components. When $k$ is finite or separably closed, we explicitly describe finite quotients of $\pi_1(X)$ that allow to compute the cohomology groups of the sheaf, and give explicit descriptions of the cup products $H^1\times H^1\to H^2$ and $H^1\times H^2\to H^3$ in terms of finite group cohomology.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.
