Abstract:The longstanding problem of Brownian transport in a heterogeneous quasi one-dimensional medium with space-dependent self-diffusion coefficient is addressed in the overdamped (zero mass) limit. A satisfactory mesoscopic description is obtained in the Langevin equation formalism by introducing an appropriate drift term, which depends on the system macroscopic observables, namely the diffuser concentration and current. The drift term is related to the microscopic properties of the medium. The paradoxical existence of a finite drift at zero current suggests the possibility of designing a Maxwell demon operating between two equilibrium reservoirs at the same temperature.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the transport of a suspended overdamped Brownian particle which is driven through a two-dimensional rectangular array of circular obstacles with finite radius. Two limiting cases are considered in detail, namely, when the constant drive is parallel to the principal or the diagonal array axes. This corresponds to studying the Brownian transport in periodic channels with reflecting walls of different topologies. The mobility and diffusivity of the transported particles in such channels are determined as functions of the drive and the array geometric parameters. Prominent transport features, like negative differential mobilities, excess diffusion peaks, and unconventional asymptotic behaviors, are explained in terms of two distinct lengths, the size of single obstacles (trapping length), and the lattice constant of the array (local correlation length). Local correlation effects are further analyzed by continuously rotating the drive between the two limiting orientations.

Abstract:Consider a Brownian motion with drift starting at an interior point of a random domain D in Rd+1, d >= 1, let tau(D) denote the first time the Brownian motion exits from D. Estimates with exact constants for the asymptotics of log P(tau(D) > T) are given for T -> infinity, depending on the shape of the domain D and the order of the drift. The problem is motivated by the model in insurance and early works of Lifshits and Shi. The methods of proof are based on the calculus of variations and early works of Li, Lifshits and Shi in the drift free case.
Time changed spherical Brownian motions with longitudinal drifts

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the time change of the diffusion process on the 2-dimensional unit sphere generated by the Laplace-Beltrami operator, perturbed by means of a longitudinal vector field. First, this is done by addressing the problem of finding strong solutions to suitable time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equations, via a spectral decomposition approach. Next, the desired process is constructed as the composition of the aforementioned diffusion process and the inverse of a subordinator, and it is used to provide a stochastic representation of the solution of the involved time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equation, which in turn leads to the spectral decomposition of its probability density function. A family of operators induced by the process is then adopted to provide very weak solutions of the same time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equation with much less regular initial data. From the spectral decomposition results we also get some bounds on the speed of convergence to the stationary state, proving that the process can be considered an anomalous diffusion. These results improve some known ones in terms of both the presence of a perturbation and the lack of regularity of the initial data.

Abstract:We discuss the dynamics of a Brownian particle under the influence of a spatially periodic noise strength in one dimension using analytical theory and computer simulations. In the absence of a deterministic force, the Langevin equation can be integrated formally exactly. We determine the short- and long-time behaviour of the mean displacement (MD) and mean-squared displacement (MSD). In particular we find a very slow dynamics for the mean displacement, scaling as $t^{-1/2}$ with time $t$. Placed under an additional external periodic force near the critical tilt value we compute the stationary current obtained from the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation and identify an essential singularity if the minimum of the noise strength is zero. Finally, in order to further elucidate the effect of the random periodic driving on the diffusion process, we introduce a phase factor in the spatial noise with respect to the external periodic force and identify the value of the phase shift for which the random force exerts its strongest effect on the long-time drift velocity and diffusion coefficient.

Abstract:The d-inverse is a generalized notion of inverse of a stochastic process having a certain tendency of increasing expectations. Scaling limit of the d-inverse of Brownian motion with functional drift is studied. Except for degenerate case, the class of possible scaling limits is proved to consist of the d-inverses of Brownian motion without drift, one with explosion in finite time, and one with power drift.

Abstract:We study the periodically driven Brownian motion of a massive particle in one dimension subject to dry (Coulombic) friction. Analytical results are obtained by noticing that the particle velocity obeys the same Langevin equation as the spatial coordinate of an overdamped particle bound to a wedge potential, also in one dimension. The response to an external sinusoidal drive is calculated in linear response theory approximation. The analytical results thus obtained closely compare with the outcome of extensive numerical simulations. Finally we show how this model of Brownian motion can be utilized to characterize the diffusion of ultrarelativistic Brownian particles in the plane, a mechanism recently proposed to model diffusive transport of charge carriers in a graphene sheet. Abstract:A fluctuating-lattice Boltzmann method is used for direct numerical simulations of Brownian motion of non-spherical particles. Numerical results include mean-square velocities and velocity autocorrelation functions of elliptical and rectangular particles. It showns that equi-partition theorem applies to non-spherical particles as well and energy of each degree of freedom depends on corresponding mean-square velocity or rotational velocity. Furthermore, translational temperature of Brownian particle is identical to its rotational temperature. Finally, velocity autocorrelation function of Brownian particle decays at relative long times as ~ct -1, where coefficient c is independent of particle shape.

Abstract:We discuss a family of time-inhomogeneous two-dimensional diffusions, defined over a finite time interval $[0,T]$, having transition density functions that are expressible in terms of the integral kernels for negative exponentials of the two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a point potential at the origin. These diffusions have a singular drift pointing in the direction of the origin that is strong enough to enable the possibly of visiting there, in contrast to a two-dimensional Brownian motion. Our main focus is on characterizing a local time process at the origin analogous to that for a one-dimensional Brownian motion and on studying the law of its process inverse.

Critical Drift for Brownian Bees and a Reflected Brownian Motion Invariance Principle

Abstract:$N$-Brownian bees is a branching-selection particle system in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which $N$ particles behave as independent binary branching Brownian motions, and where at each branching event, we remove the particle furthest from the origin. We study a variant in which $d=1$ and particles have an additional drift $\mu\in\mathbb{R}$. We show that there is a critical value, $\mu_c^N$, and three distinct regimes (sub-critical, critical, and super-critical) and we describe the behaviour of the system in each case. In the sub-critical regime, the system is positive Harris recurrent and has an invariant distribution; in the super-critical regime, the system is transient; and in the critical case, after rescaling, the system behaves like a single reflected Brownian motion. We also show that the critical drift $\mu_c^N$ is in fact the speed of the well-studied $N$-BBM process, and give a rigorous proof for the speed of $N$-BBM, which was missing in the literature.

Abstract:The stochastic motion of a particle with long-range correlated increments (the moving phase) which is intermittently interrupted by immobilizations (the trapping phase) in a disordered medium is considered in the presence of an external drift. In particular, we consider trapping events whose times follow a scale-free distribution with diverging mean trapping time. We construct this process in terms of fractional Brownian motion with constant forcing in which the trapping effect is introduced by the subordination technique, connecting "operational time" with observable "real time." We derive the statistical properties of this process such as non-Gaussianity and nonergodicity, for both ensemble and single-trajectory (time) averages. We demonstrate nice agreement with extensive simulations for the probability density function, skewness, kurtosis, as well as ensemble and time-averaged mean-squared displacements. We place a specific emphasis on the comparisons between the cases with and without drift.

Abstract:Abstract We solve an optimal stopping problem where the underlying diffusion is Brownian motion on with a positive piecewise constant drift changing at zero. It is assumed that the drift μ 1 on the negative side is smaller than the drift μ 2 on the positive side. The main observation is that if , then there exist values of the discounting parameter for which it is not optimal to stop in the vicinity of zero where the drift changes. However, when the discounting gets larger, the stopping region becomes connected and contains zero. This is in contrast with results concerning optimal stopping of skew Brownian motion where the skew point is for all values of the discounting parameter in the continuation region in case the skew parameter is bigger than 1/2. In all cases, a practical implementation of these optimal stopping strategies, based on hitting times of boundaries of continuation regions, would require access to the highest‐possible frequency data which is consistent with the continuous‐time modeling framework.

Abstract:Let $B^{H}$ be a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$, $f:[0,1]\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{d}$ a Borel function, and $E\subset[0,1]$, $F\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$ are given Borel sets. The focus of this paper is on hitting probabilities of the non-centered Gaussian process $B^{H}+f$. It aims to highlight how each component $f$, $E$ and $F$ is involved in determining the upper and lower bounds of $\mathbb{P}\{(B^H+f)(E)\cap F\neq \emptyset \}$. When $F$ is a singleton and $f$ is a general measurable drift, some new estimates are obtained for the last probability by means of suitables Hausdorff measure and capacity of the graph $Gr_E(f)$. As application we deal with the issue of polarity of points for $(B^H+f)\vert_E$ (the restriction of $B^H+f$ to the subset $E\subset (0,\infty)$).

Extremal Invariant Distributions of Infinite Brownian Particle Systems with Rank Dependent Drifts

Abstract:\noindent Consider an infinite collection of particles on the real line moving according to independent Brownian motions and such that the $i$-th particle from the left gets the drift $g_{i-1}$. The case where $g_0=1$ and $g_{i}=0$ for all $i \in \mathbb{N}$ corresponds to the well studied infinite Atlas model. Under conditions on the drift vector $\boldsymbol{g} = (g_0, g_1, \ldots)'$ it is known that the Markov process corresponding to the gap sequence of the associated ranked particles has a continuum of product form stationary distributions $\{\pi_a^{\boldsymbol{g}}, a \in S^{\boldsymbol{g}}\}$ where $S^{\boldsymbol{g}}$ is a semi-infinite interval of the real line. In this work we show that all of these stationary distributions are extremal and ergodic. We also prove that any product form stationary distribution of this Markov process that satisfies a mild integrability condition must be $\pi_a^{\boldsymbol{g}}$ for some $a \in S^{\boldsymbol{g}}$. These results are new even for the infinite Atlas model. The work makes progress on the open problem of characterizing all the invariant distributions of general competing Brownian particle systems interacting through their relative ranks. Proofs rely on synchronous and mirror coupling of Brownian particles and properties of the intersection local times of the various particles in the infinite system.

Nonequilibrium steady state of Brownian motion in an intermittent potential

Abstract:We calculate the steady state distribution $P_{\text{SSD}}(\boldsymbol{X})$ of the position of a Brownian particle under an intermittent confining potential that switches on and off with a constant rate $\gamma$. We assume the external potential $U(\boldsymbol{x})$ to be smooth and have a unique global minimum at $\boldsymbol{x} = \boldsymbol{x}_0$, and in dimension $d>1$ we additionally assume that $U(\boldsymbol{x})$ is central. We focus on the rapid-switching limit $\gamma \to \infty$. Typical fluctuations follow a Boltzmann distribution $P_{\text{SSD}}(\boldsymbol{X}) \sim e^{- U_{\text{eff}}(\boldsymbol{X}) / D}$, with an effective potential $U_{\text{eff}}(\boldsymbol{X}) = U(\boldsymbol{X})/2$, where $D$ is the diffusion coefficient. However, we also calculate the tails of $P_{\text{SSD}}(\boldsymbol{X})$ which behave very differently. In the far tails $|\boldsymbol{X}| \to \infty$, a universal behavior $P_{\text{SSD}}\left(\boldsymbol{X}\right)\sim e^{-\sqrt{\gamma/D} \, \left|\boldsymbol{X}-\boldsymbol{x}_{0}\right|}$ emerges, that is independent of the trapping potential. The mean first-passage time to reach position $\boldsymbol{X}$ is given, in the leading order, by $\sim 1/P_{\text{SSD}}(\boldsymbol{X})$. This coincides with the Arrhenius law (for the effective potential $U_{\text{eff}}$) for $\boldsymbol{X} \simeq \boldsymbol{x}_0$, but deviates from it elsewhere. We give explicit results for the harmonic potential. Finally, we extend our results to periodic one-dimensional systems. Here we find that in the limit of $\gamma \to \infty$ and $D \to 0$, the logarithm of $P_{\text{SSD}}(X)$ exhibits a singularity which we interpret as a first-order dynamical phase transition (DPT). This DPT occurs in absence of any external drift. We also calculate the nonzero probability current in the steady state that is a result of the nonequilibrium nature of the system.

Uphill drift in the absence of current in single-file diffusion

Abstract:Single-file diffusion is a paradigmatic model for the transport of Brownian colloidal particles in narrow one-dimensional channels, such as those found in certain porous media, where the particles cannot cross each other. We consider a system where a different external uniform potential is present to the right and left of an origin. For example, this is the case when two channels meeting at the origin have different radii. In equilibrium, the chemical potential of the particles are equal, the density is thus lower in the region with the higher potential, and by definition there is no net current in the system. Remarkably, a single-file tracer particle initially located at the origin, with position denoted by $Y(t)$, exhibits an average up-hill drift toward the region of highest potential. This drift has the late time behavior $\langle Y(t)\rangle= C t^{1/4}$, where the prefactor $C$ depends on the initial particle arrangement. This surprising result is shown analytically by computing the first two moments of $Y(t)$ through a simple and physically-illuminating method, and also via extensive numerical simulations.

Abstract:We consider the long-time behavior of a diffusion process on $\mathbb{R}^d$ advected by a stationary random vector field which is assumed to be divergence-free, dihedrally symmetric in law and have a log-correlated potential. A special case includes $\nabla^\perp$ of the Gaussian free field in two dimensions. We show the variance of the diffusion process at a large time $t$ behaves like $2 c_* t (\log t)^{1/2}$, in a quenched sense and with a precisely determined, universal prefactor constant $c_*>0$. We also prove a quenched invariance principle under this superdiffusive scaling. The proof is based on a rigorous renormalization group argument in which we inductively analyze coarse-grained diffusivities, scale-by-scale. Our analysis leads to sharp homogenization and large-scale regularity estimates on the infinitesimal generator, which are subsequently transferred into quantitative information on the process.
