Abstract:For a smooth map \(g: X \to U(N)\), where \(X\) is three-dimensional, oriented, and closed manifold, the winding number is defined as \(W_3 = \frac{1}{24\pi^2} \int_{X} \mathrm{Tr}\left[(g^{-1}dg)^3\right]\). We introduce a method to compute \(W_3\) using a discrete approximation of \(X\) that manifestly ensures the quantization of \(W_3\).

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to calculate the winding number \(W_3[g]\) of a smooth mapping \(g: X\rightarrow U(N)\) on a three - dimensional manifold, where \(X\) is a three - dimensional, oriented, closed manifold, and \(U(N)\) represents the \(N\times N\) unitary matrix group. Specifically, the paper proposes a method to calculate \(W_3[g]\) by discretely approximating \(X\) and ensuring that the calculation result explicitly remains quantized (i.e., the result is an integer value).
### Background and Motivation
The winding number \(W_3[g]\) has important applications in physics, especially in topological band theory, where it serves as a topological invariant of three - dimensional superconductors with time - reversal symmetry, and in non - Abelian (lattice) gauge theory for the calculation of instanton numbers. However, in actual numerical analysis, the function \(g\) is usually only defined on a finite set of lattice points, so an effective numerical method is required to calculate \(W_3[g]\).
### Main Contributions
1. **Discretization Method**: The paper introduces a discretization method. By discretizing the manifold \(X\) into cubic lattice points, the winding number \(W_3[g]\) can be effectively calculated.
2. **Explicit Quantization**: This method ensures that the calculation result explicitly remains quantized, that is, the result is an integer value, as long as the discretization precision is high enough to capture the spatial variation scale of \(g\).
3. **Numerical Verification**: The paper verifies the effectiveness of this method through specific model calculations. For example, calculations are carried out on the model \(g_0(k_x, k_y, k_z)\) on the three - torus, and results consistent with the analytical form are obtained.
### Specific Methods
1. **Local Construction**: By introducing the \(\theta\)-gap condition, the paper constructs a local two - form \(B_\theta\) such that \(H = dB_\theta\).
2. **Discretization Formula**: Using the discretization of cubic lattice points, the winding number \(W_3[g]\) is expressed as the sum of a series of line integrals.
3. **Correction Term**: In order to eliminate possible non - zero discrete errors, the paper introduces a correction term \(\tilde{\Phi}_p\) to ensure that the final discretization formula \(W_{\text{dis}}^3[g]\) explicitly remains quantized.
### Conclusion
The paper successfully proposes a discretization method for calculating the three - dimensional winding number \(W_3[g]\). This method is not only suitable for numerical calculations but also can ensure the quantization property of the results. This method provides a powerful tool for numerical simulations in topological physics. Future research can further explore discretization calculation methods for other high - dimensional topological invariants.
