Abstract:Cosmic-ray (CR) positrons are relatively rare due to its secondary origin and thus sensitive to exotic contributions. Primordial black holes (PBHs) with masses above $\sim 5\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{g}$ can be stable sources of CR positrons due to Hawking radiation. We show that the CR positron flux measured by AMS-02 can place stringent constraints on the energy fraction of PBHs relative to that of dark matter $f_{\text{PBH}}$. Making use of the state-of-the-art models for CR propagation in both the Galaxy and heliosphere, we obtain conservative upper limit of $f_{\text{PBH}}\lesssim3\times 10^{-4}$ at $M_{\mathrm{PBH}}\simeq2\times 10^{16}$ g, which improves the previous constraints obtained from the Voyager CR all-electron data by around an order of magnitude.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: by analyzing the cosmic - ray (CR) positron flux, to place strict limits on the energy fraction of primordial black holes (PBH) relative to dark matter, $ f_{\text{PBH}} $. Specifically, the paper studies the impact of positrons produced by PBH through Hawking radiation during the evaporation process on cosmic - ray observation data, and uses the low - energy positron data measured by the AMS - 02 detector to constrain the abundance of PBH. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Hawking radiation of PBH and cosmic - ray positrons** Light PBH in the mass range from $ 10^{13} \, \text{g} $ to $ 10^{17} \, \text{g} $ can emit standard model particles, including positrons, through Hawking radiation. The propagation process of these positrons in the Milky Way may be observed, thus providing clues about the existence of PBH. 2. **Constraining PBH abundance using AMS - 02 data** The paper uses the low - energy positron data (kinetic energy range of 0.5–5.2 GeV) measured by the AMS - 02 detector, combined with advanced cosmic - ray propagation models (such as Galprop and Helmod), to derive strict limits on the PBH abundance $ f_{\text{PBH}} $. 3. **Improving existing constraints** Previous studies mainly relied on the all - electron data of the voyager detector to constrain the PBH abundance, but these constraints were affected by the solar modulation effect. The paper shows that the AMS - 02 positron data can provide constraints that are an order of magnitude stronger than the voyager data. --- ### Summary of key formulas 1. **Particle emission rate of Hawking radiation** Describes the rate of particle species $ i $ emitted from PBH Hawking radiation per unit time: $$ \frac{d^2 N_i}{dt \, dE} = \frac{g_i \Gamma_i}{2\pi} \left[ \exp\left(\frac{E}{T_{\text{PBH}}}\right) - (-1)^{2s_i} \right]^{-1} $$ where: - $ g_i $ and $ s_i $ are the degrees of freedom and spin of particle $ i $ respectively; - $ T_{\text{PBH}} \approx 10.6 \times \left(\frac{10^{15} \, \text{g}}{M_{\text{PBH}}}\right) \, \text{MeV} $ is the temperature of PBH; - $ \Gamma_i $ is the grey - body factor. 2. **Total positron energy spectrum** The total positron energy spectrum from PBH of different masses: $$ \frac{d^2 n_{e^\pm}}{dt \, dE_{\text{kin}}} = \int_{M_{\text{min}}}^\infty dM_{\text{PBH}} \frac{d^2 N_{e^\pm}}{dt \, dE_{\text{kin}}} \frac{dn}{dM_{\text{PBH}}} $$ 3. **PBH mass distribution function** Assume a monochromatic mass distribution or a log - normal distribution: $$ \frac{dn}{dM_{\text{PBH}}} = \begin{cases} A_1 \delta(M_{\text{PBH}} - M_c) & \text{Monochromatic distribution} \\ A_2 \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi}} \frac{1}{\sigma M_{\text{PBH}}^2} \exp\left(-\frac{\ln^2(M_{\text{PBH}}/M_c)}{2\sigma^2}\right) & \text{Log - normal distribution} \end{cases} $$
