Abstract:We present a new formula for pi involving nested radicals with rapid convergence. This formula is based on the arctangent function identity with argument $x=\sqrt{2-{{a}_{k-1}}}/{{a}_{k}}$, where \[ {{a}_{k}}=\underbrace{\sqrt{2+\sqrt{2+\sqrt{2+\cdots +\sqrt{2}}}}}_{k\,\,\text{square}\,\,\text{roots}} \] is a nested radical consisting of $k$ square roots. The computational test we performed reveals that the proposed formula for pi provides a significant improvement in accuracy as the integer $k$ increases.

Abstract:Famous Zaremba's conjecture (1971) states that for each positive integer $q\geq2$, there exists positive integer $1\leq a <q$, coprime to $q$, such that if you expand a fraction $a/q$ into a continued fraction $a/q=[a_1,\ldots,a_n]$, all of the coefficients $a_i$'s are bounded by some absolute constant $\mathfrak k$, independent of $q$. Zaremba conjectured that this should hold for $\mathfrak k=5$. In 1986, Niederreiter proved Zaremba's conjecture for numbers of the form $q=2^n,3^n$ with $\mathfrak k=3$ and for $q=5^n$ with $\mathfrak k=4$. In this paper we prove that for each number $q\neq 2^n,3^n$, there exists $a$, coprime to $q$, such that all of the partial quotients in the continued fraction of $a/q$ are bounded by $ \operatorname{rad}(q)-1$, where $\operatorname{rad}(q)$ is the radical of an integer number, i.e. the product of all distinct prime numbers dividing $q$. In particular, this means that Zaremba's conjecture holds for numbers $q$ of the form $q=2^n3^m, n,m\in\mathbb N \cup \{0\}$ with $\mathfrak k= 5$, generalizing Neiderreiter's result. Our result also improves upon the recent result by Moshchevitin, Murphy and Shkredov on numbers of the form $q=p^n$, where $p$ is an arbitrary prime and $n$ sufficiently large.

In this paper, applying Dirichlet's approximation theorem to certain algebraic numbers$\;\theta,$ e.g.$\;\theta=\sqrt[n]{d},d\in N,n\geq 3,d>0;$ $\;\theta^{3}+b_{1}\theta-b_{0}=0,b_{0}>0;$ $\;\theta^{4}+b_{2}\theta^{2}-b_{0}=0,\;b_{0}>0.$ We proved that there exists a effective constant$\;C=C(\theta)$ such that$\;|p-q\theta|>Cq^{-1}$ for all$\;p/q.$ Our theorem shows their sequence of partial quotients can not be unbounded.

Abstract:We provide an upper bound for the effective irrationality exponents of cubic algebraics x with the minimal polynomial . In particular, we show that it becomes non-trivial, i.e. better than the classical bound of Liouville, in the case . Moreover, under the condition , we provide an explicit lower bound for the expression || qx || for all large . These results are based on the recently discovered continued fractions of cubic irrationals and improve the currently best-known bounds of Wakabayashi.

Abstract:This article presents a new method for calculating square roots in GF(p) by exponentiating in GF(p^3) or equivalently modulo irreducible cubic polynomials. This algorithm is in some ways similar to the Cipolla-Lehmer algorithm which is based on exponentiating in GF(p^2). Another less well known square root algorithm based on quadratic sums is also given. In addition to this, several conjectures about the output of this GF(p^3) square root algorithm are mentioned.

Abstract:In this article, we extend our recent work on a Bombieri-Vinogradov-type theorem for sparse sets of prime powers $p^N\le x^{1/4-\varepsilon}$ with $p\le (\log x)^C$ to sparse sets of moduli $s\le x^{1/3-\varepsilon}$ with radical rad$(s)\le x^{9/40}$. To derive our result, we combine our previous method with a Bombieri-Vinogradov-type theorem for general moduli $s\le x^{9/40}$ obtained by Roger Baker.

Abstract:We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.

Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Abstract:For any prime $p$ and $\varepsilon>0$ we prove that for any sufficiently large positive odd integer $s$ at least $(c_p-\varepsilon) \sqrt{\frac{s}{\log s}}$ of the $p$-adic zeta values $\zeta_p(3),\zeta_p(5),\dots,\zeta_p(s)$ are irrational. The constant $c_p$ is positive and does only depend on $p$. This result establishes a $p$-adic version of the elimination technique used by Fischler--Sprang--Zudilin and Lai--Yu to prove a similar result on classical zeta values. The main difficulty consists in proving the non-vanishing of the resulting linear forms. We overcome this problem by using a new irrationality criterion.

Abstract:According to the Abel-Ruffini theorem [1] and Galois theory [2], there is no solution in finite radicals to the general quintic equation. This article takes a different approach and proposes a new method to solve the quintic by iteration of radicals. But, the most intriguing result is an accurate algebraic formula for absolute and relative root approximation: |formula - root| < 0.00432 and |formula/root - 1| < 0.0251. We then expand some of the geometric properties discussed to construct a trigonometric algorithm that derives all roots.

Isolation Intervals of the Real Roots of the Parametric Cubic Equation and Improved Complete Root Classification

Abstract:The isolation intervals of the real roots of the real symbolic monic cubic polynomial $p(x) = x^3 + a x^2 + b x + c\,\,$ are found in terms of simple functions of the coefficients of the polynomial (such as: $-a$, $-a/3$, $-c/b$, $\pm \sqrt{-b}$, when $b$ is negative), and the roots of some auxiliary quadratic equations whose coefficients are also simple functions of the coefficients of the cubic. All possible cases are presented with clear and very detailed diagrams. It is very easy to identify which of these diagrams is the relevant one for any given cubic equation and to read from it the isolation intervals of the real roots of the equation. A much-improved complete root classification, addressing the signs (together with giving the isolation intervals) of the individual roots, is also presented. No numerical approximations or root finding techniques are used. Instead of considering the discriminant of the cubic, criterion for the existence of a single real root or three real roots is found as conditions on the coefficients of the cubic, resulting from the roots of the auxiliary quadratic equations. It is also shown that, if a cubic equation has three real roots, then these lie in an interval $I$ such that $\sqrt{3}\sqrt{a^2/3 - b} \le I \le 2 \sqrt{a^2/3 - b}$, independent of $c$. A detailed algorithm for applying the method for isolation of the roots of the cubic is also given and it is illustrated through examples, including the full mathematical analysis of the cubic equation associated with the Rayleigh elastic waves and finding the isolation intervals of its real roots.

Abstract:In this article, we present streamlined proofs of results of Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla concerning the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ for primes $p\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$ while providing a generalization of their conjecture. Using our generalization, we relate Fermat quotients of quadratic non-residues $\bmod{p}$ to sums of harmonic numbers.

History and Overview

Abstract:This paper is purely expositional. The statement of the Abel-Ruffini theorem on unsolvability of equations using radicals is simple and well-known. We sketch an elementary proof of this theorem. We do not use the terms 'field extension', 'Galois group' and even 'group'. However, our presentation is a good way to learn (or recall) starting idea of the Galois theory. Our exposition follows `Mathematical Omnibus' of S. Tabachnikov and D.B. Fuchs (in English, http://www.math.psu.edu/tabachni/Books/taba.pdf). The main difference is that we show how the proof could have been invented. The paper is accessible for students familiar with complex numbers, and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to advanced mathematical education; most problems are presented with hints or solutions.
On the degree of polynomials computing square roots mod p

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$, we say $f(X) \in {\mathbb F}_p[X]$ computes square roots in $\mathbb F_p$ if, for all nonzero perfect squares $a \in \mathbb F_p$, we have $f(a)^2 = a$. When $p \equiv 3 \mod 4$, it is well known that $f(X) = X^{(p+1)/4}$ computes square roots. This degree is surprisingly low (and in fact lowest possible), since we have specified $(p-1)/2$ evaluations (up to sign) of the polynomial $f(X)$. On the other hand, for $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$ there was previously no nontrivial bound known on the lowest degree of a polynomial computing square roots in $\mathbb F_p$; it could have been anywhere between $\frac{p}{4}$ and $\frac{p}{2}$. We show that for all $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$, the degree of a polynomial computing square roots has degree at least $p/3$. Our main new ingredient is a general lemma which may be of independent interest: powers of a low degree polynomial cannot have too many consecutive zero coefficients. The proof method also yields a robust version: any polynomial that computes square roots for 99\% of the squares also has degree almost $p/3$. In the other direction, a result of Agou, Deliglése, and Nicolas (Designs, Codes, and Cryptography, 2003) shows that for infinitely many $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$, the degree of a polynomial computing square roots can be as small as $3p/8$.

Abstract:Let $P_{r}$ denote an integer with at most $r$ prime factors counted with multiplicity. In this paper we prove that for any $0<\lambda<\frac{1}{4}$, the inequality $\{\sqrt{p}\}<p^{-\lambda}$ has infinitely many solutions in primes $p$ such that $p+2=P_r$, where $r=\lfloor \frac{8}{1-4\lambda} \rfloor$. Abstract:Computations on a computer with a floating point arithmetic are always approximate. Conversely, computations with the rational arithmetic (in a computer algebra system, for example) are always absolutely exact and reproducible both on other computers and (theoretically) by hand. Consequently, these computations can be demonstrative in a sense that a proof obtained with their help is no different from a traditional one (computer assisted proof). However, usually such computations are impossible in a sufficiently complicated problem due to limitations on resources of memory and time. We propose a mechanism of rounding off rational numbers in computations with rational arithmetic, which solves this problem (of resources), i.e., computations can still be demonstrative but do not require unbounded resources. We give some examples of implementation of standard numerical algorithms with this arithmetic. The results have applications to analytical number theory.

Abstract:In this article, using only elementary knowledge of complex numbers, we sketch a proof of the celebrated Abel--Ruffini theorem, which states that the general solution to an algebraic equation of degree five or more cannot be written using radicals, that is, using its coefficients and arithmetic operations $+,-,\times,÷,$ and $\sqrt{\ }$. The present article is written purposely with concise and pedagogical terms and dedicated to students and researchers not familiar with Galois theory, or even group theory in general, which are the usual tools used to prove this remarkable theorem. In particular, the proof is self-contained and gives some insight as to why formulae exist for equations of degree four or less (and how they are constructed), and why they do not for degree five or more.

Abstract:We propose the use of the cubic transformation for public-key applications and digital signatures. Transformations modulo a prime p or a composite n=pq, where p and q are primes, are used in such a fashion that each transformed value has only 3 roots that makes it a more efficient transformation than the squaring transformation of Rabin, which has 4 roots. Such a transformation, together with additional tag information, makes it possible to uniquely invert each transformed value. The method may be used for other exponents as well.
