Abstract:In December 2023 the Florida State Seminoles became the first Power 5 school to have an undefeated season and miss selection for the College Football Playoff. In order to assess this decision, we employed an Elo ratings model to rank the teams and found that the selection committee's decision was justified and that Florida State were not one of the four best teams in college football in that season (ranking only 11th!). We extended this analysis to all other years of the CFP and found that the top four teams by Elo ratings differ greatly from the four teams selected in almost every year of the CFP's existence. Furthermore, we found that there have been more egregious non-selections including when Alabama was ranked first by Elo ratings in 2022 and were not selected. The analysis suggests that the current criteria are too subjective and a ratings model should be implemented to provide transparency for the sport, its teams, and its fans.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the evaluation of the decision-making process of the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee in choosing participating teams. Specifically, the paper ranks teams using the Elo rating model and compares the results with the actual selections made by the committee, exploring issues of subjectivity and transparency in the selection criteria. In 2023, Florida State Seminoles became the first Power 5 conference school to remain undefeated in the regular season but not be selected for the CFP. To evaluate this decision, the author used the Elo rating model to rank all teams and found that Florida State was actually not one of the top 4 teams that season (ranking only 11th). Additionally, the author extended this analysis to all years since the CFP's inception and found significant differences between the top 4 teams selected based on Elo ratings and the committee's choices in most years. For example, the University of Alabama, which was ranked 1st in 2022, did not make it into the CFP. Therefore, the author argues that the current selection criteria are overly subjective and suggests using a rating model to improve the transparency of the entire event, allowing teams and fans to better understand the selection process.
