Abstract:In this paper, we study the $C$-width of HNN extension of a group via its proper isomorphic subgroups and amalgamated free product of two groups via their proper isomorphic subgroups with respect to conjugation invariant generating set. We will also establish that infinite one relator group has infinite $C$-width.

Abstract:We show that the nuclear dimension of a (twisted) group C*-algebra of a virtually polycyclic group is finite. This prompts us to make a conjecture relating finite nuclear dimension of group C*-algebras and finite Hirsch length, which we then verify for a class of elementary amenable groups beyond the virtually polycyclic case. In particular, we give the first examples of finitely generated, non-residually finite groups with finite nuclear dimension. A parallel conjecture on finite decomposition rank is also formulated and an analogous result is obtained. Our method relies heavily on recent work of Hirshberg and the second named author on actions of virtually nilpotent groups on $C_0(X)$-algebras.

Infinite graph product of groups I: Geometry of the extension graph

Abstract:We introduce the extension graph of graph product of groups and study its geometry. This enables us to study properties of graph product by exploiting large scale geometry of its defining graph. In particular, we show that the extension graph is isomorphic to the crossing graph of a canonical quasi-median graph and exhibits the same phenomenon about asymptotic dimension as quasi-trees of metric spaces studied by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara. As an application of the extension graph, we prove relative hyperbolicity of graph-wreath product. This provides a new construction of relatively hyperbolic groups.

On Diameters of Cayley Graphs over Matrix Groups

Abstract:We establish for the matrix group $G=\mathrm{SL}_{n}\left(\mathbb{F}_{p}\right)$ that there exist absolute constants $c\in\left(0,1\right)$ and $C>0$ such that any symmetric generating set $A$, with $\left|A\right|\geq\left|G\right|^{1-c}$ has a covering number $\leq Cn^{2}.$ This result is sharp up to the value of the constant $C>0$.

On subgroups with narrow Schreier graphs

Abstract:We study finitely generated pairs of groups $H \leq G$ such that the Schreier graph of $H$ has at least two ends and is \emph{narrow}. Examples of narrow Schreier graphs include those that are quasi-isometric to finitely ended trees or have linear growth. Under this hypothesis, we show that $H$ is a virtual fiber subgroup if and only if $G$ contains infinitely many double cosets of $H$. Along the way, we prove that if a group acts essentially on a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex with no facing triples then it virtually surjects onto the integers with kernel commensurable to a hyperplane stabiliser.

On the average size of $3$-torsion in class groups of $C_2 \wr H$-extensions

Abstract:The Cohen-Lenstra-Martinet heuristics lead one to conjecture that the average size of the $p$-torsion in class groups of $G$-extensions of a number field is finite. In a 2021 paper, Lemke Oliver, Wang, and Wood proved this conjecture in the case of $p = 3$ for permutation groups $G$ of the form $C_2 \wr H$ for a broad family of permutation groups $H$, including most nilpotent groups. However, their theorem does not apply for some nilpotent groups of interest, such as $H = C_5$. We extend their results to prove that the average size of $3$-torsion in class groups of $C_2 \wr H$-extensions is finite for any nilpotent group $H$.

Abstract:By studying commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length h and cardinality aleph-n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+h+2. We also provide a criterion for groups that fit into an extension with torsion-free quotient to admit a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Finally, we exhibit examples of integral linear groups of type F whose geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is finite but arbitrarily larger than the geometric dimension for proper actions. This answers a question posed by W. Lueck.

Abstract:Abstract A natural higher-order notion of C 1 , α {C}^{1,\alpha } -rectifiability, 0 < α ≤ 1 0\lt \alpha \le 1 , is introduced for subsets of the Heisenberg groups H n {{\mathbb{H}}}^{n} in terms of covering a set almost everywhere with a countable union of ( C H 1 , α , H ) \left({{\bf{C}}}_{H}^{1,\alpha },{\mathbb{H}}) -regular surfaces. Using this, we prove a geometric characterization of C 1 , α {C}^{1,\alpha } -rectifiable sets of low codimension in Heisenberg groups H n {{\mathbb{H}}}^{n} in terms of an almost everywhere existence of suitable approximate tangent paraboloids.

Abstract:A finite group $G$ is a DCI-group if, whenever $S$ and $S'$ are subsets of $G$ with the Cayley graphs Cay$(G,S)$ and Cay$(G,S')$ isomorphic, there exists an automorphism $\varphi$ of $G$ with $\varphi(S)=S'$. It is a CI-group if this condition holds under the restricted assumption that $S=S^{-1}$. We extend these definitions to infinite groups, and make two closely-related definitions: an infinite group is a strongly (D)CI$_f$-group if the same condition holds under the restricted assumption that $S$ is finite; and an infinite group is a (D)CI$_f$-group if the same condition holds whenever $S$ is both finite and generates $G$. We prove that an infinite (D)CI-group must be a torsion group that is not locally-finite. We find infinite families of groups that are (D)CI$_f$-groups but not strongly (D)CI$_f$-groups, and that are strongly (D)CI$_f$-groups but not (D)CI-groups. We discuss which of these properties are inherited by subgroups. Finally, we completely characterise the locally-finite DCI-graphs on $\mathbb Z^n$. We suggest several open problems related to these ideas, including the question of whether or not any infinite (D)CI-group exists.

Abstract:A digraph is called an $n$-Cayley digraph if its automorphism group has an $n$-orbit semiregular subgroup. We determine the splitting fields of $n$-Cayley digraphs over abelian groups and compute a bound on their algebraic degrees, before applying our results on Cayley digraphs over non-abelian groups.

Abstract:Gromov asked whether an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group was always simply connected or had uncountable fundamental group. We prove that Gromov's dichotomy holds for asympotic cones with cut points, as well as, HNN extensions and amalgamated products where the associated subgroups are nicely embedded. We also show a slightly weaker dichotomy for multiple HNN extensions of free groups.

Abstract:We prove that for a finitely generated group G with a free factor system and an injective endomorphism that preserves the free factor system, the ascending HNN extension of G is hyperbolic relative to a collection of maximal parabolic subgroups. As a corollary, we see that if an injective endomorphism of a finite rank free group F is exponentially growing, the ascending HNN extension of F is relatively hyperbolic.

Abstract:We use the theory of group actions on profinite trees to prove that the fundamental group of a finite, 1-acylindrical graph of free groups with finitely generated edge groups is conjugacy separable. This has several applications: we prove that positive, $C'(1/6)$ one-relator groups are conjugacy separable; we provide a conjugacy separable version of the Rips construction; we use this latter to provide an example of two finitely presented, residually finite groups that have isomorphic profinite completions, such that one is conjugacy separable and the other does not even have solvable conjugacy problem.

Abstract:A natural notion of higher order rectifiability is introduced for subsets of Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$ in terms of covering a set almost everywhere by a countable union of $(\mathbf{C}_H^{1,\alpha},\mathbb{H})$-regular surfaces, for some $0 < \alpha \leq 1$. We prove that a sufficient condition for $C^{1,\alpha}$-rectifiability of low-codimensional subsets in Heisenberg groups is the almost everywhere existence of suitable approximate tangent paraboloids.

Abstract:We establish finite nuclear dimension for crossed product C*-algebras arising from various classes of possibly non-free topological actions, including arbitrary actions of finitely generated virtually nilpotent groups on finite dimensional spaces, certain amenable actions of hyperbolic groups, and certain allosteric actions of wreath products. We obtain these results by introducing a new notion of dimension for topological dynamical systems, called the long thin covering dimension, which involves a suitable version of Rokhlin-type towers with controlled overlaps for possibly non-free actions.

Abstract:This article is dedicated to the study of the acylindrical hyperbolicity of automorphism groups of graph products of groups. Our main result is that, if Γ \Gamma is a finite graph which contains at least two vertices and is not a join and if G \mathcal {G} is a collection of finitely generated irreducible groups, then either Γ G \Gamma \mathcal {G} is infinite dihedral or A u t ( Γ G ) \mathrm {Aut}(\Gamma \mathcal {G}) is acylindrically hyperbolic. This theorem is new even for right-angled Artin groups and right-angled Coxeter groups. Various consequences are deduced from this statement and from the techniques used to prove it. For instance, we show that the automorphism groups of most graph products verify vastness properties such as being SQ-universal; we show that many automorphism groups of graph products do not satisfy Kazhdan’s property (T); we solve the isomorphism problem between graph products in some cases; and we show that a graph product of coarse median groups, as defined by Bowditch, is coarse median itself.

Finite groups with geodetic Cayley graphs

Abstract:A connected undirected graph is called \emph{geodetic} if for every pair of vertices there is a unique shortest path connecting them. It has been conjectured that for finite groups, the only geodetic Cayley graphs which occur are odd cycles and complete graphs. In this article we present a series of theoretical results which contribute to a computer search verifying this conjecture for all groups of size up to 1024. The conjecture is also verified theoretically for several infinite families of groups including dihedral and some families of nilpotent groups. Two key results which enable the computer search to reach as far as it does are: if the center of a group has even order, then the conjecture holds (this eliminates all 2-groups from our computer search); if a Cayley graph is geodetic then there are bounds relating the size of the group, generating set and center (which cuts down the number of generating sets which must be searched significantly).

Liftable self-similar groups and scale groups

Abstract:We canonically identify the groups of isometries and dilations of local fields and their rings of integers with subgroups of the automorphism group of the $(d+1)$-regular tree $\widetilde T_{d+1}$, where $d$ is the residual degree. Then we introduce the class of liftable self-similar groups acting on a $d$-regular rooted tree whose ascending HNN extensions act faithfully and vertex transitively on $\widetilde T_{d+1}$ fixing one of the ends. The closures of these extensions in $\mathrm{Aut}(\widetilde T_{d+1})$ are totally disconnected locally compact group that belong to the class of scale groups. We give numerous examples of liftable groups coming from self-similar groups acting essentially freely or groups admitting finite $L$-presentations. In particular, we show that the finitely presented group constructed by the first author and the finitely presented HNN extension of the Basilica group embed into the group $\mathcal D(\mathbb Q_2)$ of dilations of the field $\mathbb Q_2$ of $2$-adic numbers. These actions, translated to $\widetilde T_3$, are 2-transitive on the punctured boundary of $\widetilde T_3$. Also we explore scale-invariant groups with the purpose of getting new examples of scale groups.
