Abstract:Using publicly available numerical relativity (NR) simulations for non-spinning eccentric binary black hole (BBH) mergers, Ref \cite{Islam:2024rhm} demonstrated that the eccentricity-induced modulations in the amplitudes and frequencies of different spherical harmonic modes are mutually consistent and can be modeled using a single time series modulation. We extend the validity of the results to all non-precessing binaries by using 83 NR simulations from the SXS, RIT, and MAYA catalogs for aligned-spin eccentric BBH mergers with mass ratios ranging from $1:1$ to $1:4$. Based on these phenomenological relations, we provide a framework named gwNRXHME to compute multi-modal eccentric non-precessing waveforms using two inputs: quadrupolar eccentric waveforms, and the corresponding multi-modal quasi-circular non-precessing waveforms. Furthermore, we compute an overall degree of departure in SXS, RIT, and MAYA NR data from these relations and find that SXS NR simulations generally adhere to these relations more strictly than RIT and MAYA data. We also show that these relations can offer a cost-effective way to filter out noisy higher-order spherical harmonic modes extracted from NR data. Our framework is publicly available through the gwModels package.

Eccentric Binary Black Hole Simulations with Numerical Relativity

Abstract:We perform a systematic study of eccentric orbiting nonspinning black hole binaries. We first make a technical study of the optimal full numerical techniques to apply to these studies. We choose different gauge parameters and Courant factors, $c=dx/dt$, and find an optimal value for it of 0.45. We also find the grid structure and global resolution that optimize accuracy and speed of current computational resources. With these choices we perform a study of the merger times $t_m$ as a function of eccentricity for configurations with comparable orbital energy content and find that they are well represented by the post-Newtonian factor $F(e)=(1+73e^2/24+37e^4/96)/(1-e^2)^{7/2}$ when merger times are normalized to their quasicircular values, i.e. $t_m(e)/t_m\approx F(e)$. We then perform a systematic coverage of five small-medium eccentricities up to $e\sim0.45$ and six mass ratios up to 8.5:1 producing a total of 30 simulations covering up to 25 orbits to merger to further model merger times and as a seed to a forthcoming new systematic catalog of gravitational waveforms from eccentric binary black holes to directly perform parameter estimations of gravitational waves events.

Abstract:We present fully general relativistic simulations of the quasi-circular inspiral and merger of charged, non-spinning, binary black holes with charge-to-mass ratio $\lambda \le 0.3$. We discuss the key features that enabled long term and stable evolutions of these binaries. We also present a formalism for computing the angular momentum carried away by electromagnetic waves, and the electromagnetic contribution to black-hole horizon properties. We implement our formalism and present the results for the first time in numerical-relativity simulations. In addition, we compare our full non-linear solutions with existing approximate models for the inspiral and ringdown phases. We show that Newtonian models based on the quadrupole approximation have errors of 20 % - 100 % in key gauge-invariant quantities. On the other hand, for the systems considered, we find that estimates of the remnant black hole spin based on the motion of test particles in Kerr-Newman spacetimes agree with our non-linear calculations to within a few percent. Finally, we discuss the prospects for detecting black hole charge by future gravitational-wave detectors using either the inspiral-merger-ringdown signal or the ringdown signal alone.

Abstract:We develop new strategies to build numerical relativity surrogate models for eccentric binary black hole systems, which are expected to play an increasingly important role in current and future gravitational-wave detectors. We introduce a new surrogate waveform model, \texttt{NRSur2dq1Ecc}, using 47 nonspinning, equal-mass waveforms with eccentricities up to $0.2$ when measured at a reference time of $5500M$ before merger. This is the first waveform model that is directly trained on eccentric numerical relativity simulations and does not require that the binary circularizes before merger. The model includes the $(2,2)$, $(3,2)$, and $(4,4)$ spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes. We also build a final black hole model, \texttt{NRSur2dq1EccRemnant}, which models the mass, and spin of the remnant black hole. We show that our waveform model can accurately predict numerical relativity waveforms with mismatches $\approx 10^{-3}$, while the remnant model can recover the final mass and dimensionless spin with absolute errors smaller than $\approx 5 \times 10^{-4}M$ and $\approx 2 \times10^{-3}$ respectively. We demonstrate that the waveform model can also recover subtle effects like mode-mixing in the ringdown signal without any special ad-hoc modeling steps. Finally, we show that despite being trained only on equal-mass binaries, \texttt{NRSur2dq1Ecc} can be reasonably extended up to mass ratio $q\approx3$ with mismatches $\simeq 10^{-2}$ for eccentricities smaller than $\sim 0.05$ as measured at a reference time of $2000M$ before merger. The methods developed here should prove useful in the building of future eccentric surrogate models over larger regions of the parameter space.

Abstract:We present a time-domain inspiral-merger-ringdowm (IMR) waveform model ESIGMAHM constructed within a framework we named ESIGMA for coalescing binaries of spinning black holes on moderately eccentric orbits (Huerta et al. (2018) [Phys. Rev. D 97, 024031]). We now include the effect of black hole spins on the dynamics of eccentric binaries, as well as model sub-dominant waveform harmonics emitted by them. The inspiral evolution is described by a consistent combination of latest results from post-Newtonian theory, self-force, and black hole perturbation theory. We assume that these moderately eccentric binaries radiate away most of their orbital eccentricity before merger, and seamlessly connect the eccentric inspiral with a numerical relativity based surrogate waveform model for mergers of spinning binaries on quasi-circular orbits. We validate ESIGMAHM against eccentric Numerical Relativity simulations, and also against contemporary effective-one-body and phenomenological models in the quasi-circular limit. We find that ESIGMAHM achieves match values greater than $99\%$ for quasi-circular spin-aligned binaries with mass ratios up to $8$, and above $97\%$ for non-spinning and spinning eccentric systems with small or positively aligned spins. Using IMRESIGMA, we quantify the impact of orbital eccentricity on GW signals, showing that next-generation detectors can detect eccentric sources up to $10\%$ louder than quasi-circular ones. We also show that current templated LIGO-Virgo searches will lose more than $10\%$ of optimal SNR for about $20\%$ of all eccentric sources by using only quasi-circular waveform templates. The same will result in a $25\%$ loss in detection rate for eccentric sources with mass ratios $m_1/m_2\geq 4$. Our results highlight the need for including eccentricity and higher-order modes in GW source models and searches for asymmetric eccentric BBH signals.

Abstract:Gravitational waves radiated during binary black hole coalescence is a perfect probe for studying the characteristics of strong gravity. Advanced techniques for creating numerical relativity substitute models for eccentric binary black hole systems are presumed to become more crucial in existing and anticipated gravitational wave detectors. The imprint on the observation data of the gravitational wave emitted by the binary coalescence enhances the two body system studies. The aim of this study is to present an overview of the change in characteristics behaviours of hierarchical massive astrophysical objects merger, which are the data bank of the early universe. We present results from numerical relativity simulations of equal-mass and unequal mass nonspinning inspiral binary-black-hole system in the Post Newtonian framework. We also consider the time evolution of eccentricity for the initial eccentric system. The eccentric Post Newtonian equations are expanded in the form of frequency related variable $x = (M \omega)^{2/3}$. The model is restricted to the (2, 2) spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes. We conclude that for higher eccentricity as well as mass ratio there exist higher oscillation in orbital radius and in eccentricity.

Abstract:gwNRHME is a recently developed framework that seamlessly converts a multi-modal (i.e with several spherical harmonic modes) quasi-circular waveform into multi-modal eccentric waveform if the quadrupolar eccentric waveform is known. Here, we employ the gwNRHME framework to combine a multi-modal quasi-circular waveform model NRHybSur3dq8 and quadrupolar non-spinning eccentric waveform model EccentricIMR to construct multi-modal non-spinning eccentric model NRHybSur3dq8-gwNRHME. Using a total of 35 eccentric numerical relativity (NR) simulations obtained from the SXS and RIT catalogs, we demonstrate that NRHybSur3dq8-gwNRHME model predictions agree well with NR (with typical relative $L_2$ errors of ~0.01 for the dominant quadrupolar mode) for mass ratios $ 1 \leq q \leq 4$ and eccentricities up to ~0.2 measured about 10 cycles before the merger. To demonstrate the modularity of the gwNRHME framework, we further combine EccentricIMR with BHPTNRSur1dq1e4 model and develop a non-spinning eccentric models named BHPTNRSur1dq1e4-gwNRHME. Finally, we develop a different variant of these models by replacing EccentricIMR with EccentricTD. Both the gwNRHME framework and associated models are available through the gwModels package.

Abstract:Many articles have partially studied the configuration of eccentric orbital binary black hole (BBH) mergers. However, there is a scarcity of systematic and comprehensive research on the effect of eccentricity on BBH dynamics. Thanks to the rich and numerous numerical relativistic simulations of eccentric orbital BBH mergers from RIT catalog, this paper aims to investigate the impact of initial eccentricity $e_0$ on various dynamic quantities such as merger time $T_{\text{merger}}$, peak luminosity $L_{\text{peak}}$ of gravitational waves, recoil velocity $V_f$, mass $M_f$, and spin $\alpha_f$ of merger remnants. We cover configurations of no spin, spin alignment, and spin precession, as well as a broad parameter space of mass ratio ranging from 1/32 to 1 and initial eccentricity from 0 to 1. For non-spinning BBH with an initial coordinate separation of $11.3M$ ($M$ is the total mass of BBH), we make the first discovery of a ubiquitous oscillation in the relationship between dynamic quantities $L_{\text{peak}}$, $V_f$, $M_f$, $\alpha_f$, and initial eccentricity $e_0$. Additionally, at $24.6M$, we observe the same oscillation phenomenon in the case of mass ratio $q=1$, but do not see it in other mass ratios, suggesting that this oscillation will be evident in numerical simulations with sufficiently dense initial eccentricity. abbreviated

An improved IMR model for BBHs on elliptical orbits

Abstract:Gravitational waveforms capturing binary's evolution through the early-inspiral phase play a critical role in extracting orbital features that nearly disappear during the late-inspiral and subsequent merger phase due to radiation reaction forces; for instance, the effect of orbital eccentricity. Phenomenological approaches that model compact binary mergers rely heavily on combining inputs from both analytical and numerical approaches to reduce the computational cost of generating templates for data analysis purposes. In a recent work, Chattaraj et al., Phys. Rev. D 106, 124008 (2022) <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.02377" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.02377">arXiv:2204.02377</a>(gr-qc), we demonstrated construction of a dominant (quadrupole) mode inspiral-merger-ringdown (IMR) model for binary black holes (BBHs) on elliptical orbits. The model was constructed in time-domain and is fully analytical. The current work is an attempt to improve this model by making a few important changes in our approach. The most significant of those involves identifying initial values of orbital parameters with which the inspiral part of the model is evolved. While the ingredients remain the same as in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.02377" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.02377">arXiv:2204.02377</a>(gr-qc), resulting waveforms at each stage seem to have improved as a consequence of new considerations proposed here. The updated model is validated also against an independent waveform family resulting overlaps better than $\sim 96.5\%$ within the calibrated range of binary parameters. Further, we use the prescription of the dominant mode model presented here to provide an alternate (but equivalent) model for the (dominant) quadrupole mode and extend the same to a model including the effect of selected non-quadrupole modes. Finally, while this model assumes non-spinning components, we show that this could also be used for mildly spinning systems with component spins (anti-) aligned w.r.t the orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:The origin of black hole mergers discovered by the LIGO1 and Virgo2 gravitational-wave observatories is currently unknown. GW1905213,4 is the heaviest black hole merger detected so far. Its observed high mass and possible spin-induced orbital precession could arise from the binary having formed following a close encounter. An observational signature of close encounters is eccentric binary orbit5–7; however, this feature is currently difficult to identify due to the lack of suitable gravitational waveforms. No eccentric merger has been previously found8. Here we report 611 numerical relativity simulations covering the full eccentricity range and an estimation approach to probe the eccentricity of mergers. Our set of simulations corresponds to ~105 waveforms, comparable to the number used in gravitational-wave searches, albeit with coarser mass ratio and spin resolution. We applied our approach to GW190521 and found that it is most consistent with a highly eccentric (e=0.69−0.22+0.17\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$e=0.6{9}_{-0.22}^{+0.17}$$\end{document}; 90% credible level) merger within our set of waveforms. This interpretation is supported over a non-eccentric merger with >10 odds ratio if ≳10% of GW190521-like mergers are highly eccentric. Detectable orbital eccentricity would be evidence against an isolated binary origin, which is otherwise difficult to rule out on the basis of observed mass and spin9,10.

Abstract:The detection of orbital eccentricity for a binary black hole system via gravitational waves is a key signature to distinguish between the possible binary origins. The identification of eccentricity has been difficult so far due to the limited availability of eccentric gravitational waveforms over the full range of black hole masses and eccentricities. Here we evaluate the eccentricity of five black hole mergers detected by the LIGO and Virgo observatories using the TEOBResumS-DALI, TEOBResumS-GIOTTO, and TEOBResumSP models. This analysis studies eccentricities up to 0.6 at the reference frequency of 5 Hz and incorporates higher-order gravitational-wave modes critical to model emission from highly eccentric orbits. The binaries have been selected due to previous hints of eccentricity or due to their unusual mass and spin. While other studies found marginal evidence for eccentricity for some of these events, our analyses do not favor the incorporation of eccentricity compared to the quasi-circular case. While lacking the eccentric evidence of other analyses, we find our analyses marginally shifts the posterior in multiple parameters for several events when allowing eccentricity to be nonzero.

Abstract:Dynamical captures of black holes may take place in dense stellar media due to the emission of gravitational radiation during a close passage. Detection of such events requires detailed modeling, since their phenomenology qualitatively differs from that of quasicircular binaries. Very few models can deliver such waveforms, and none includes information from numerical relativity (NR) simulations of nonquasicircular coalescences. In this study we present a first step towards a fully NR-informed effective-one-body (EOB) model of dynamical captures. We perform 14 new simulations of single and double encounter mergers, and use this data to inform the merger-ringdown model of the TEOBResumS-Dalì approximant. We keep the initial energy approximately fixed to the binary mass, and vary the mass-rescaled, dimensionless angular momentum in the range (0.6, 1.1), the mass ratio in (1, 2.15), and aligned dimensionless spins in (−0.5,0.5) . We find that the model is able to match NR to 97%, improving previous performances, without the need of modifying the baseline template. Upon NR informing the model, this improves to 99% with the exception of one outlier corresponding to a direct plunge. The maximum EOB/NR phase difference at merger for the uninformed model is of 0.15 radians, which is reduced to 0.1 radians after the NR information is introduced. Abstract:We present the first effective-one-body (EOB) model for generic-spins quasi-circular black-hole--neutron-star (BHNS) inspiral-merger-ringdown gravitational waveforms (GWs). Our model is based on a new numerical-relativity (NR) informed expression of the BH remnant and its ringdown. It reproduces the NR $(\ell,m)=(2,2)$ waveform with typical phase agreement of ${\lesssim0.5}\,$rad (${\lesssim1}\,$rad) to merger (ringdown). The maximum (minimum) mismatch between the $(2,2)$ and the NR data is 4% (0.6%). Higher modes (HMs) $(2,1)$, $(3,2)$, $(3,3)$, $(4,4)$ and $(5,5)$ are included and their mismatch with the available NR waveforms are up to (down to) a 60% (1%) depending on the inclination. Phase comparison with a 16 orbit precessing simulation shows differences within the NR uncertainties. We demonstrate the applicability of the model in GW parameter estimation by perfoming the first BHNS Bayesian analysis with HMs (and non-precessing spins) of the event GW190814, together with new $(2,2)$-mode analysis of GW200105 and GW200115. For the GW190814 study, the inclusion of HMs gives tighter parameter posteriors. The Bayes factors of our analyses on this event show decisive evidence for the presence of HMs, but no clear preference for a BHNS or a binary black hole (BBH) source. Similarly, we confirm GW200105 and GW200115 show no evidence for tidal effects.

A binary black hole metric approximation from inspiral to merger

Abstract:We present a semi-analytic binary black hole (BBH) metric approximation that models the entire evolution of the system from inspiral to merger. The metric is constructed as a boosted Kerr-Schild superposition following post-Newtonian (PN) trajectories at the fourth PN order in the inspiral phase. During merger, we interpolate the binary metric in time to a single black hole remnant with properties obtained from numerical relativity (NR) fittings. Different from previous approaches, the new metric can model binary black holes with arbitrary spin direction, mass ratio, and eccentricity at any stage of their evolution in a fast and computationally efficient way. We analyze the properties of our new metric and we compare it with a full numerical relativity evolution. We show that Hamiltonian constraints are well-behaved even at merger and that the mass and spin of the black holes deviate in average only $\sim 5 \%$ compared to the full numerical evolution. We perform a General Relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical (GRMHD) simulation of uniform gas evolving on top of our approximate metric. We compare it with a full numerical relativity evolution of the fluid and Einstein's equations. We show that the properties of the gas such as the accretion rate are remarkably similar between the two approaches, exhibiting only $\sim 10 \%$ differences in average. The approximate metric is five times more efficient among other computational advantages. The numerical implementation of the metric is now open-source and optimized for numerical work. Numerical-relativity validation of effective-one-body waveforms in the intermediate-mass-ratio regime

Abstract:One of the open problems in developing binary black hole (BBH) waveforms for gravitational wave astronomy is to model the intermediate mass ratio regime and connect it to the extreme mass ratio regime. A natural approach is to employ the effective one body (EOB) approach to the two-body dynamics that, by design, can cover the entire mass ratio range and naturally incorporates the extreme mass ratio limit. Here we use recently obtained numerical relativity (NR) data with mass ratios $m_1/m_2=(7,15,\,32,\,64,\,128)$ to test the accuracy of the state-of-the-art EOB model TEOBResumS in the intermediate mass ratio regime. We generally find an excellent EOB/NR consistency around merger and ringdown for all mass ratios and for all available subdominant multipoles, except for the $\ell=m=5$ one. This mode can be crucially improved using the new large-mass ratio NR data of this paper. The EOB/NR inspirals are also consistent with the estimated NR uncertainties. We also use several NR datasets taken by different public catalogs to probe the universal behavior of the multipolar hierarchy of waveform amplitudes at merger, that smoothly connects the equal-mass BBH to the test-mass result. Interestingly, the universal behavior is strengthened if the nonoscillatory memory contribution is included in the NR waveform. Future NR simulations with improved accuracy will be necessary to further probe, and possibly quantitatively refine, the TEOBResumS transition from late inspiral to plunge in the intermediate mass ratio regime.

Interplay between numerical-relativity and black hole perturbation theory in the intermediate-mass-ratio regime

Abstract:We investigate the interplay between numerical relativity (NR) and point-particle black hole perturbation theory (ppBHPT) for quasi-circular non-spinning binary black holes in the intermediate mass ratio regime: 7<=q<=128 (where $q:=m_1/m_2$ is the mass ratio of the binary with m_1 and m_2 being the mass of the primary and secondary black hole respectively). Initially, we conduct a comprehensive comparison between the dominant (l,m) = (2,2) mode of the gravitational radiation obtained from state-of-the-art NR simulations and ppBHPT waveforms along with waveforms generated from recently developed NR-informed ppBHPT surrogate model, BHPTNRSur1dq1e4. This surrogate model employs a simple but non-trivial rescaling technique known as the $\alpha$-$\beta$ scaling to effectively match ppBHPT waveforms to NR in the comparable mass ratio regime. Subsequently, we analyze the amplitude and frequency differences between NR and ppBHPT waveforms to investigate the non-linearities, beyond adiabatic evolution, that are present during the merger stage of the binary evolution and propose fitting functions to describe these differences in terms of both the mass ratio and the symmetric mass ratio. Finally, we assess the performance of the $\alpha$-$\beta$ scaling technique in the intermediate mass ratio regime.

Abstract:The major source of ground-based gravitational wave detectors, the inspiral and merger of comparable mass binary black holes (BBH), consists of a slow quasicircular inspiral, a merger to form a single remnant hole, and the quasinormal ringing of that remnant. The first and last of these epochs are amenable to well developed and familiar approximations: Newtonian or post-Newtonian for the first, and BH perturbation methods for the last. Ironically, the middle epoch, the merger, generates most of the GW emission, yet has been accessible so far only to numerical relativity. Here we add the close-limit approximation for the phenomenology of the merger. With the completed set of methods (Newtonian/post-Newtonian; close limit; BH perturbation theory) we show that not only can we understand the results of BBH coalescence, but - with reasonable accuracy - we can {\it predict} the resulting radiation and remnant.
