Abstract:A graph of order $n$ is distance magic if it admits a bijective labeling of its vertices with integers from $1$ to $n$ such that each vertex has the same sum of the labels of its neighbors. In this paper we classify all distance magic Cartesian products of two cycles, thereby correcting an error in a widely cited paper from 2004. Additionally, we show that each distance magic labeling of a Cartesian product of cycles is determined by a pair or quadruple of suitable sequences, thus obtaining a complete characterization of all distance magic labelings of these graphs. We also determine a lower bound on the number of all distance magic labelings of $C_{m} \square C_{2m}$ with $m \ge 3$ odd.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily addresses the problem of distance magic labeling in graph theory, specifically for the Cartesian products of cycles. Specifically, the goals of the paper include the following aspects: 1. **Correcting errors in previous literature**: The paper points out that there is an error in the necessary and sufficient conditions for such graphs to become distance magic graphs in a widely cited 2004 paper, and it corrects this error. 2. **Classifying all distance magic Cartesian products**: The authors completely classify all cases of Cartesian products of two cycles that become distance magic graphs. They prove that such a Cartesian product is distance magic only when one cycle's length is twice the length of the other cycle and the length is odd, or when the lengths of the two cycles are equal and the length modulo 4 is 2. 3. **Describing all possible distance magic labelings**: For the Cartesian products that become distance magic graphs in the above two cases, the authors provide a complete description of all possible distance magic labelings. These labelings are determined by specific sequences of pairs or quadruples. 4. **Determining the lower bound of the number of labelings**: The paper also determines a lower bound on the number of all distance magic labelings for a specific type of distance magic graph, namely the Cartesian product of a cycle of odd length with a cycle of twice its length. Through this work, the paper not only corrects errors in previous research but also provides an in-depth understanding of the distance magic properties of these special graphs, particularly a complete classification of their labeling characteristics. This contributes to further research on the problem of magic labeling of graphs and provides new perspectives and tools for future studies.
