Jog studied the fragmentation of gas under external tides and derived a dispersion relation $l^{\prime } = l_{\rm Jeans} \frac{1}{(1 + \lambda _0^{\prime } / 4 \pi G \rho _0)^{1/2}} \,\,.$ She further concludes that the Jeans mass is $m_{\rm incorrect}^{\prime }=m_{\rm Jeans} [1/(1 + \lambda _0^{\prime } / 4 \pi G \rho _0)^{3/2}]$. We clarify that due to the inhomogeneous nature of tides, this characteristic mass is incorrect. Under weak tides, the mass is $m \approx \rho \, l_1 l_2 l_3$, where the modifications to Jeans lengths along all three dimensions need to be considered; when the tide is strong enough, collapse can only occur once 1 or 2 dimensions. In the latter case, tides can stretch the gas, leading to the formation of filaments.

Transport-driven super-Jeans fragmentation in dynamical star-forming regions

Abstract:The Jeans criterion is one cornerstone in our understanding of gravitational fragmentation. A critical limitation of the Jeans criterion is that the background density is assumed to be a constant, which is often not true in dynamic conditions such as star-forming regions. For example, during the formation phase of the high-density gas filaments in a molecular cloud, a density increase rate $\dot \rho$ implies a mass accumulation time of $t_{\rm acc}= \rho / \dot \rho= - \rho (\nabla \cdot (\rho \vec{v}))^{-1}$. The system is non-stationary when the mass accumulation time becomes comparable to the free-fall time $t_{\rm ff} = 1 / \sqrt{G \rho}$. We study fragmentation in non-stationary settings, and find that accretion can significantly increase in the characteristic mass of gravitational fragmentation ( $\lambda_{\rm Jeans,\; aac}= \lambda_{\rm Jeans} (1 + t_{\rm ff} / t_{\rm acc})^{1/3}$, $m_{\rm Jeans,\, acc} = m_{\rm Jeans} (1 + t_{\rm ff} / t_{\rm acc})$). In massive star-forming regions, this mechanism of transport-driven super-jeans fragmentation can contribute to the formation of massive stars by causing order-of-magnitude increases in the mass of the fragments.

Abstract:Recent works have proposed the idea of a tidal screening scenario, in which tidal forces determine the mass that a protostar can accrete to explain the IMF. In this scenario, gravitationally unstable fragments will compete for the gas reservoir in a star-forming clump. In this contribution, we propose to properly include the action of an external gravitational potential in the Jeans linear instability analysis as previously proposed by Jog. We have found that an external gravitational potential can reduce the critical mass required for the perturbation to collapse if the tidal force produced is compressive or increase it if it is disruptive. Our analytical treatment provides (a) new mass and length collapse conditions; (b) a simple equation for observers to check whether their observed fragments can collapse; and (c) a simple equation to compute whether collapse-induced turbulence can produce the levels of observed fragmentation. Our results suggest that, given envelopes with similar mass and density, the flatter ones should produce more stars than the steeper ones. If the density profile is a power-law, the corresponding power-law index separating these two regimes should be about 1.5. We finally applied our formalism to 160 fragments identified within 18 massive star-forming cores of previous works. We found that considering tides, 49% of the sample may be gravitationally unstable and that it is unlikely that turbulence acting at the moment of collapse has produced the fragmentation of these cores. Instead, these fragments should have formed earlier when the parent core was substantially flatter.

Super-Jeans fragmentation in massive star-forming regions revealed by triangulation analysis

Abstract:Understanding the fragmentation of the gas cloud and the formation of massive stars remains one of the most challenging questions of modern astrophysical research. Either the gas fragmentation in a Jeans-like fashion, after which the fragments grow through accretion, or the fragmentation length is larger than the Jeans length from the start. Despite significant observational efforts, a consensus has not been reached. The key is to infer the initial density distribution upon which gravitational fragmentation occurs. Since cores are the products of the fragmentation process, the distances between adjacent cores serve as a scale indicator. Based on this observation, we propose a Delaunay triangulation-based approach to infer the density structure before the fragmentation and establish the link between density distribution and gas fragmentation length. We find that at low density, the fragmenting is Jeans-like, and at high densities, the core separations are larger than the prediction of the Jeans fragmentation. This super-Jeans fragmentation, which often occurs in groups, is responsible for the clustered formation of massive stars.

Abstract:It has recently been demonstrated [A. Giusti, Phys. Rev. D 101, 124029 (2020)] that characteristic traits of Milgrom's modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) can be replicated from an entirely distinct framework: a fractional variant of Newtonian mechanics. To further assess its validity, this proposal needs to be tested in relevant astrophysical scenarios. Here, we investigate its implications on Jeans gravitational instability and related phenomena. We examine scenarios involving classical matter confined by gravity and extend our analysis to the quantum domain, through a Schrödinger-Newton approach. We also derive a generalized Lane-Emden equation associated with fractional gravity. Through comparisons between the derived stability criteria and the observed stability of Bok globules, we establish constraints on the theory's parameters to align with observational data.

Abstract:The massive star-forming region G332.83-0.55 contains at least two levels of hub-filament structures. The hub-filament structures may form through the "gravitational focusing" process. High-resolution LAsMA and ALMA observations can directly trace the gas inflows from cloud to core scales. We investigated the effects of shear and tides from the protocluster on the surrounding local dense gas structures. Our results seem to deny the importance of shear and tides from the protocluster. However, for a gas structure, it bears the tidal interactions from all external material, not only the protocluster. To fully consider the tidal interactions, we derived the tide field according to the surface density distribution. Then, we used the average strength of the external tidal field of a structure to measure the total tidal interactions that are exerted on it. For comparison, we also adopted an original pixel-by-pixel computation to estimate the average tidal strength for each structure. Both methods give comparable results. After considering the total tidal interactions, for the scaling relation between the velocity dispersion sigma , the effective radius $R$, and the column density $N$ of all the structures, the slope of the $ relation changes from 0.20pm 0.04 to 0.52pm 0.03, close to 0.5 of the pure free-fall gravitational collapse, and the correlation also becomes stronger. Thus, the deformation due to the external tides can effectively slow down the pure free-fall gravitational collapse of gas structures. The external tide tries to tear up the structure, but the external pressure on the structure prevents this process. The counterbalance between the external tide and external pressure hinders the free-fall gravitational collapse of the structure, which can also cause the pure free-fall gravitational collapse to be slowed down. These mechanisms can be called "tide-regulated gravitational collapse."

The Jeans Mass as a Fundamental Measure of Self-Gravitating Disc Fragmentation and Initial Fragment Mass

Abstract:As a formation route for objects such as giant planets and low-mass stars in protostellar discs (as well as stars in AGN discs), theories of self-gravitating disc fragmentation need to be able to predict the initial masses of fragments. We describe a means by which the local Jeans mass inside the spiral structure of a self-gravitating disc can be estimated. If such a self-gravitating disc satisfies the criteria for disc fragmentation, this estimate provides a lower limit for the initial mass of any fragments formed. We apply this approach to a series of self-gravitating protostellar disc models, to map out the typical masses of fragments produced by this formation mode. We find a minimum fragment mass of around 3 Jupiter masses, which is insensitive to the stellar mass, and that - within the parameter space surveyed - fragments with masses between 10 and 20 Jupiter masses are the most common. We also describe how the Jeans mass allows us to derive a more general criterion for disc fragmentation, which accounts for the processes of viscous heating, radiative cooling, accretion and the disc's thermal history. We demonstrate how such a criterion can be determined, and show that in limiting cases it recovers several fragmentation criteria that have been posited in the past, including the minimum cooling time/maximum stress criterion.

Tides in clouds: control of star formation by long-range gravitational force

Abstract:Gravity drives the collapse of molecular clouds through which stars form, yet the exact role of gravity in cloud collapse remains a complex issue. Studies point to a picture where star formation occurs in clusters. In a typical, pc-sized cluster-forming region, the collapse is hierarchical, and the stars should be born from regions of even smaller sizes ($\approx 0.1\;\rm pc$). The origin of this spatial arrangement remains under investigation. Based on a high-quality surface density map towards the Perseus region, we construct a 3D density structure, compute the gravitational potential, and derive eigenvalues of the tidal tensor ($\lambda_{\rm min}$, $\lambda_{\rm mid}$, $\lambda_{\rm max}$, $\lambda_{\rm min} < \lambda_{\rm mid} < \lambda_{\rm max}$), analyze the behavior of gravity at every location and reveal its multiple roles in cloud evolution. We find that fragmentation is limited to several isolated, high-density ``islands''. Surrounding them, is a vast amount of gas ($75 \%$ of the mass, $95 \%$ of the volume) that stays under the influence of extensive tides where fragmentation is suppressed. This gas will be transported towards these regions to fuel star formation. The spatial arrangement of regions under different tides explains the hierarchical and localized pattern of star formation inferred from the observations. Tides were first recognized by Newton, yet this is the first time its dominance in cloud evolution has been revealed. We expect this link between cloud density structure and role gravity to be strengthened by future studies, resulting in a clear view of the star formation process.

Abstract:In contrast to several classical studies, in which gravitational instability criteria for astrophysical disks are derived within traditional hydrodynamics or kinetics, it is proposed to consider the set of loose gas–dust clusters of an accretion protoplanetary disk as a special type of continuous medium, i.e., a fractal medium whose phase velocity space contains points and areas not filled by its components. Within the Tsallis formalism of nonadditive statistics (thermodynamics), intended to describe the behavior of anomalous systems, i.e., systems with a strong gravitational interaction of its individual parts and the fractal nature of the phase space, linearized equations are obtained for oscillations of a solid-state rotating disk on the basis of modified Navier–Stokes hydrodynamic equations (the so-called q -hydrodynamics equations) and in view of dissipative effects, and a derivation is given of the dispersion equation in the WKB approximation. An analysis is conducted of axisymmetric oscillations of a differentially rotating astrophysical gas–dust space object to obtain modified Jeans and Toomre gravitational instability criteria for disks with a fractal structure.

Abstract:The thermodynamic state of star-forming gas determines its fragmentation behavior and thus plays a crucial role in determining the stellar initial mass function (IMF). We address the issue by studying the effects of a piecewise polytropic equation of state (EOS) on the formation of stellar clusters in turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds using three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. In these simulations stars form via a process we call gravoturbulent fragmentation, i.e., gravitational fragmentation of turbulent gas. To approximate the results of published predictions of the thermal behavior of collapsing clouds, we increase the polytropic exponent γ from 0.7 to 1.1 at a critical density nc, which we estimated to be . The change of thermodynamic state at nc selects a characteristic mass scale for fragmentation Mch, which we relate to the peak of the observed IMF. A simple scaling argument based on the Jeans mass at the critical density leads to . We perform simulations with to test this scaling argument. Our simulations qualitatively support this hypothesis, but we find a weaker density dependence of . We also investigate the influence of additional environmental parameters on the IMF. We consider variations in the turbulent driving scheme, and consistently find is decreasing with increasing . Our investigation generally supports the idea that the distribution of stellar masses depends mainly on the thermodynamic state of the star-forming gas. The thermodynamic state of interstellar gas is a result of the balance between heating and cooling processes, which in turn are determined by fundamental atomic and molecular physics and by chemical abundances. Given the abundances, the derivation of a characteristic stellar mass can thus be based on universal quantities and constants.

On the fragmentation of filaments in a molecular cloud simulation

Abstract:The fragmentation of filaments in molecular clouds has attracted a lot of attention as there seems to be a relation between the evolution of filaments and star formation. The study of the fragmentation process has been motivated by simple analytical models. However, only a few comprehensive studies have analysed the evolution of filaments using numerical simulations where the filaments form self-consistently as part of molecular clouds. We address the early evolution of pc-scale filaments that form within individual clouds. We focus on three questions: How do the line masses of filaments evolve? How and when do the filaments fragment? How does the fragmentation relate to the line masses of the filaments? We examine three simulated molecular clouds formed in kpc-scale numerical simulations performed with the FLASH code. We compare the properties of the identified filaments with the predictions of analytic filament stability models. The line masses and mass fraction enclosed in the identified filaments increase continuously after the onset of self-gravity. The first fragments appear early when the line masses lie well below the critical line mass of Ostriker's hydrostatic equilibrium solution. The average line masses of filaments identified in 3D density cubes increases far more quickly than those identified in 2D column density maps. Our results suggest that hydrostatic or dynamic compression from the surrounding cloud has a significant impact on the early dynamical evolution of filaments. A simple model of an isolated, isothermal cylinder may not provide a good approach for fragmentation analysis. Caution must be exercised in interpreting distributions of properties of filaments identified in column density maps, especially in the case of low-mass filaments. Comparing or combining results from studies that use different filament finding techniques is strongly discouraged.

Jeans and Boltzmann Solutions for Oblate Galaxies with Flat Rotation Curves

Abstract:A general solution of the Jeans equations for oblate scale-free logarithmic potentials is given. This provides all possible second velocity moments that can hold up a stellar population of flattened scale-free density against the gravity field. A two-parameter subset of second moments for the self-consistent density of Binney's model is examined in detail. These solutions have the desirable property that the observable dispersions in the radial and proper motions can be given explicitly. In the spherical limit, the potential of these models reduces to that of the singular isothermal sphere. The Jeans solutions for scale-free densities of arbitrary flattening that can correspond to physical three-integral distribution functions are identified. The problem of finding distribution functions associated with the Jeans solutions in flattened scale-free logarithmic potentials is then investigated for Binney's model. An approximate solution of the collisionless Boltzmann equation is found which provides a third (partial) integral of good accuracy for thin and near-thin tube orbits. It is a modification of the total angular momentum. This enables the construction of many simple three-integral distribution functions. The kinematic properties of these approximate DFs are shown to agree with a subset of the Jeans solutions --- which are thereby confirmed as good approximations to physical solutions.

Jeans modeling of axisymmetric galaxies with multiple stellar populations

Abstract:We present the theoretical framework to efficiently solve the Jeans equations for multi-component axisymmetric stellar systems, focusing on the scaling of all quantities entering them. The models may include an arbitrary number of stellar distributions, a dark matter halo, and a central supermassive black hole; each stellar distribution is implicitly described by a two- or three-integral distribution function, and the stellar components can have different structural (density profile, flattening, mass, scale-length), dynamical (rotation, velocity dispersion anisotropy), and population (age, metallicity, initial mass function, mass-to-light ratio) properties. In order to determine the ordered rotational velocity and the azimuthal velocity dispersion fields of each component, we introduce a decomposition that can be used when the commonly adopted Satoh decomposition cannot be applied. The scheme developed is particularly suitable for a numerical implementation; we describe its realisation within our code JASMINE2, optimised to maximally exploit the scalings allowed by the Poisson and the Jeans equations, also in the post-processing procedures. As applications, we illustrate the building of three multi-component galaxy models with two distinct stellar populations, a central black hole, and a dark matter halo; we also study the solution of the Jeans equations for an exponential thick disc, and for its multi-component representation as the superposition of three Miyamoto-Nagai discs. A useful general formula for the numerical evaluation of the gravitational potential of factorised thick discs is finally given.

Abstract:In reference to general polytropic and conventional polytropic hydrodynamic cylinders of infinite lengthwith axial uniformity and axisymmetry under self-gravity, the dynamic evolution of central collapsing mass string in free-fall dynamic accretion phase is re-examined in details. We compare the central mass accretion rate and the envelope mass infall rate at small radii. Among others, we correct mistakes and typos of Kawachi & Hanawa (KH hereafter) and in particular prove that their key asymptotic free-fall solution involving polytropic index. in the two power exponents is erroneous by analytical analyses and numerical tests. The correct freefall asymptotic solutions at sufficiently small (r) over cap (the dimensionless independent self-similar variable) scale as similar to-vertical bar ln (r) over cap vertical bar(1/2) in contrast to KH's similar to-vertical bar ln (r) over cap vertical bar((2-gamma)/2) for the reduced bulk radial flowvelocity and as similar to(r) over cap (-1)vertical bar ln (r) over cap vertical bar(-1/2) in contrast to KH's similar to(r) over cap (-1)vertical bar ln (r) over cap vertical bar(-(2-gamma)/2) for the reduced mass density. We offer consistent scenarios for numerical simulation code testing and theoretical study on dynamic filamentary structure formation and evolution as well as pertinent stability properties. Due to unavoidable Jeans instabilities along the cylinder, such collapsing massive filaments or strings can further break up into clumps and segments of various lengths as well as clumps embedded within segments and evolve into chains of gravitationally collapsed objects (such as gaseous planets, brown dwarfs, protostars, white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes in a wide mass range, globular clusters, dwarf spheroidals, galaxies, galaxy clusters and even larger mass reservoirs etc.) in various astrophysical and cosmological contexts as articulated by Lou & Hu recently. As an example, we present a model scheme for comparing with observations of molecular filaments for forming protostars, brown dwarfs and gaseous planets and so forth.

Abstract:The problem of self-gravitational instability of an astrophysical rotating plasma in a strong magnetic field with an anisotropic pressure tensor is studied on the basis of the Chew–Goldberger–Low (CGL) quasi-hydrodynamic equations modified by generalized polytropic laws. Using the general form of a dispersion relation obtained by the normal-mode perturbation method, a discussion is provided of the propagation of small-amplitude perturbation waves in an infinite homogeneous plasma medium for transverse, longitudinal, and oblique directions with respect to the magnetic field vector. It is shown that different polytropic indices and anisotropic pressures not only change the classical Jeans instability condition but also cause the appearance of new unstable regions. Modified Jeans instability criteria are obtained for isotropic MHD equations and anisotropic CGL equations owing to the influence of the polytropic indices on gravitational and firehose instabilities for astrophysical plasma. It is shown that in the case of a longitudinal mode of perturbation wave propagation, the Jeans instability criterion does not depend on uniform rotation. In the case of the transverse propagation regime, the presence of rotation reduces the critical wave number and exerts a stabilizing effect on the growth rate of the unstable regime.

Abstract:It is shown that, due to the effects of non-extensivity, the ordinary well-known Jeans mass limit ( M J ), resting on Newton’s gravity and Gibbs statistics, may not be valid everywhere. Indeed, the Tsallis formalism allows smaller values for Jeans mass compared to M J , which may justify star formation in cases like Bok globules whose masses are smaller than M J . The values of non-extensive parameter q corresponding to some Bok objects are also computed. Thereinafter, the Lane–Emden equation is also calculated as the result of satisfying the condition of hydrostatic equilibrium. The research is concluded by introducing a novel Lane–Emden equation to provide a more detailed exploration of the effects of non-extensivity on stellar equilibrium. This equation, accompanied by analytical solutions, can be useful for modeling the behavior of low-mass stars and would provide insights into the distribution of density, pressure, and temperature in self-gravitating systems like protoplanetary disks and neutron stars.

Abstract:We present a theoretical model framework for general polytropic (GP) hydrodynamic cylinder under self-gravity of infinite length with axial uniformity and axisymmetry. For self-similar dynamic solutions, we derive valuable integrals, analytic asymptotic solutions, sonic critical curves, shock conditions, and global numerical solutions with or without expansion shocks. Among others, we investigate various dynamic solutions featured with central free-fall asymptotic behaviours, corresponding to a collapsed mass string with a sustained dynamic accretion from a surrounding mass reservoir. Depending on the allowed ranges of a scaling index a < -1, such cylindrical dynamic mass accretion rate could be steady, increasing with time and decreasing with time. Physically, such a collapsed mass string or filament would break up into a sequence of sub-clumps and segments as induced by gravitational Jeans instabilities. Depending on the scales involved, such sub-clumps would evolve into collapsed objects or gravitationally bound systems. In diverse astrophysical and cosmological contexts, such a scenario can be adapted on various temporal, spatial and mass scales to form a chain of collapsed clumps and/or compact objects. Examples include the formation of chains of proto-stars, brown dwarfs and gaseous planets along molecular filaments; the formation of luminous massive stars along magnetized spiral arms and circum-nuclear starburst rings in barred spiral galaxies; the formation of chains of compact stellar objects such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes along a highly condensed mass string. On cosmological scales, one can perceive the formation of chains of galaxies, chains of galaxy clusters or even chains of supermassive and hypermassive black holes in the Universe including the early Universe. All these chains referred to above include possible binaries.
