Abstract:We define and study a variant of QMA (Quantum Merlin Arthur) in which Arthur can make multiple non-collapsing measurements to Merlin's witness state, in addition to ordinary collapsing measurements. By analogy to the class PDQP defined by Aaronson, Bouland, Fitzsimons, and Lee (2014), we call this class PDQMA. Our main result is that PDQMA = NEXP; this result builds on the MIP = NEXP Theorem and complements the result of Aaronson (2018) that PDQP/qpoly = ALL. While the result has little to do with quantum mechanics, we also show a more "quantum" result: namely, that QMA with the ability to inspect the entire history of a hidden variable is equal to NEXP, under mild assumptions on the hidden-variable theory. We also observe that a quantum computer, augmented with quantum advice and the ability to inspect the history of a hidden variable, can solve any decision problem in polynomial time.

Abstract:We study a variant of QMA where quantum proofs have no relative phase (i.e. non-negative amplitudes, up to a global phase). If only completeness is modified, this class is equal to QMA [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1410.2882" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1410.2882">arXiv:1410.2882</a>]; but if both completeness and soundness are modified, the class (named QMA+ by Jeronimo and Wu) can be much more powerful. We show that QMA+ with some constant gap is equal to NEXP, yet QMA+ with some *other* constant gap is equal to QMA. One interpretation is that Merlin's ability to "deceive" originates from relative phase at least as much as from entanglement, since QMA(2) $\subseteq$ NEXP.

Abstract:We find a modification to QMA where having one quantum proof is strictly less powerful than having two unentangled proofs, assuming EXP $\ne$ NEXP. This gives a new route to prove QMA(2) = NEXP that overcomes the primary drawback of a recent approach [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2402.18790" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.18790">arXiv:2402.18790</a> , <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.13247" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.13247">arXiv:2306.13247</a>] (QIP 2024). Our modification endows each proof with a form of *multipartite* unentanglement: after tracing out one register, a small number of qubits are separable from the rest of the state.

Short QMA(k) Proofs for SAT without Entangling Measurements

Abstract:BellQMA(k) is the subclass of QMA(k) in which the verifier is restricted to perform unentangling measurements on the proofs received from each Merlin. BellQMAO(log m)(Õ( √ m)) is the class of promise problems having BellQMA proofs with Õ( √ m) provers, each sending an O(logm)-qubit message, and with a constant completeness-soundness gap. In this paper, we prove that a 3SAT instance with m clauses has a BellQMAO(log m)(Õ( √ m)) proof of satisfiability. Our result improves the result of Aaronson, Beigi, Drucker, Fefferman, and Shor in [ABDFS’08], who showed that 3SAT has a QMAO(log m)(Õ( √ m)) proof with a constant completeness-soundness gap.

Abstract:We present three contributions to the understanding of QMA with multiple provers: 1) We give a tight soundness analysis of the protocol of [Blier and Tapp, ICQNM '09], yielding a soundness gap Omega(1/N^2). Our improvement is achieved without the use of an instance with a constant soundness gap (i.e., without using a PCP). 2) We give a tight soundness analysis of the protocol of [Chen and Drucker, ArXiV '10], thereby improving their result from a monolithic protocol where Theta(sqrt(N)) provers are needed in order to have any soundness gap, to a protocol with a smooth trade-off between the number of provers k and a soundness gap Omega(k^2/N), as long as k>=Omega(log N). (And, when k=Theta(sqrt(N)), we recover the original parameters of Chen and Drucker.) 3) We make progress towards an open question of [Aaronson et al., ToC '09] about what kinds of NP-complete problems are amenable to sublinear multiple-prover QMA protocols, by observing that a large class of such examples can easily be derived from results already in the PCP literature - namely, at least the languages recognized by a non-deterministic RAMs in quasilinear time.

Abstract:BellQMA protocols are a subclass of multi-prover quantum Merlin-Arthur protocols in which the verifier is restricted to perform nonadaptive,unentangled measurements on the quantum states received from each Merlin. In this paper, we prove that m-clause 3-SAT instances have BellQMA proofs of satisfiability with constant soundness gap, in which O(sqrt(m)polylog(m)) Merlins each send O(log m) qubits to Arthur. Our result answers a question of Aaronson et al., who gave a protocol with similar parameters that used entangled measurements; the analysis of our protocol is significantly simpler than that of Aaronson et al. Our result also complements recent work of Brandao, Christandl, and Yard, who showed upper bounds on the power of multiprover quantum proofs with unentangled but adaptive (LOCC) measurements.
Succinct arguments for QMA from standard assumptions via compiled nonlocal games

Abstract:We construct a succinct classical argument system for QMA, the quantum analogue of NP, from generic and standard cryptographic assumptions. Previously, building on the prior work of Mahadev (FOCS '18), Bartusek et al. (CRYPTO '22) also constructed a succinct classical argument system for QMA. However, their construction relied on post-quantumly secure indistinguishability obfuscation, a very strong primitive which is not known from standard cryptographic assumptions. In contrast, the primitives we use (namely, collapsing hash functions and a mild version of quantum homomorphic encryption) are much weaker and are implied by standard assumptions such as LWE. Our protocol is constructed using a general transformation which was designed by Kalai et al. (STOC '23) as a candidate method to compile any quantum nonlocal game into an argument system. Our main technical contribution is to analyze the soundness of this transformation when it is applied to a succinct self-test for Pauli measurements on maximally entangled states, the latter of which is a key component in the proof of MIP*=RE in quantum complexity.

Zero-Knowledge Proof Systems for QMA.

Abstract:Prior work has established that all problems in NP admit classical zero-knowledge proof systems, and under reasonable hardness assumptions for quantum computations, these proof systems can be made secure against quantum attacks. We prove a result representing a further quantum generalization of this fact, which is that every problem in the complexity class QMA has a quantum zero-knowledge proof system. More specifically, assuming the existence of an unconditionally binding and quantum computationally concealing commitment scheme, we prove that every problem in the complexity class QMA has a quantum interactive proof system that is zero-knowledge with respect to efficient quantum computations. Our QMA proof system is sound against arbitrary quantum provers, but only requires an honest prover to perform polynomial-time quantum computations, provided that it holds a quantum witness for a given instance of the QMA problem under consideration. The proof system relies on a new variant of the QMA-complete local Hamiltonian problem in which the local terms are described by Clifford operations and standard basis measurements. We believe that the QMA-completeness of this problem may have other uses in quantum complexity.

Abstract:We study three variants of multi-prover quantum Merlin-Arthur proof systems. We first show that the class of problems that can be efficiently verified using polynomially many quantum proofs, each of logarithmic-size, is exactly \class{MQA} (also known as QCMA), the class of problems which can be efficiently verified via a classical proof and a quantum verifier. We then study the class $\class{BellQMA}(\poly)$, characterized by a verifier who first applies unentangled, nonadaptive measurements to each of the polynomially many proofs, followed by an arbitrary but efficient quantum verification circuit on the resulting measurement outcomes. We show that if the number of outcomes per nonadaptive measurement is a polynomially-bounded function, then the expressive power of the proof system is exactly \class{QMA}. Finally, we study a class equivalent to \class{QMA}($m$), denoted $\class{SepQMA}(m)$, where the verifier's measurement operator corresponding to outcome {\it accept} is a fully separable operator across the $m$ quantum proofs. Using cone programming duality, we give an alternate proof of a result of Harrow and Montanaro [FOCS, pp. 633--642 (2010)] that shows a perfect parallel repetition theorem for $\class{SepQMA}(m)$ for any $m$.

Revisiting BQP with Non-Collapsing Measurements

Abstract:The study of non-collapsing measurements was initiated by Aaronson, Bouland, Fitzsimons, and Lee, who showed that BQP, when equipped with the ability to perform non-collapsing measurements (denoted as PDQP), contains both BQP and SZK, yet still requires $\Omega (N^{1/4})$ queries to find an element in an unsorted list. By formulating an alternative equivalent model of PDQP, we prove the positive weighted adversary method, obtaining a variety of new lower bounds and establishing a trade-off between queries and non-collapsing measurements. The method allows us to examine the well-studied majority and element distinctness problems, while also tightening the bound for the search problem to $\Theta (N^{1/3})$. Additionally, we explore related settings, obtaining tight bounds in BQP with the ability to copy arbitrary states (called CBQP) and PDQP with non-adaptive queries.

UniqueQMA vs QMA: oracle separation and eigenstate thermalization hypothesis

Abstract:We study the long-standing open question of the power of unique witness in quantum protocols, which asks if UniqueQMA, a variant of QMA whose accepting witness space is 1-dimensional, is equal to QMA. We show a quantum oracle separation between UniqueQMA and QMA via an extension of the Aaronson-Kuperberg's QCMA vs QMA oracle separation. In particular, we show that any UniqueQMA protocol must make $\Omega(\sqrt{D})$ queries to a subspace phase oracle of unknown dimension $\leq D$ to "find" the subspace. This presents an obstacle to relativizing techniques in resolving this question (unlike its classical analogue - the Valiant-Vazirani theorem - which is essentially a black-box reduction) and suggests the need to study the structure of the ground space of local Hamiltonians in distilling a potential unique witness. Our techniques also yield a quantum oracle separation between QXC, the class characterizing quantum approximate counting, and QMA. Very few structural properties are known that place the complexity of local Hamiltonians in UniqueQMA. We expand this set of properties by showing that the ground energy of local Hamiltonians that satisfy the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) can be estimated through a UniqueQMA protocol. Specifically, our protocol can be viewed as a quantum expander test in a low energy subspace of the Hamiltonian and verifies a unique entangled state in two copies of the subspace. This allows us to conclude that if UniqueQMA $\neq$ QMA, then QMA-hard Hamiltonians must violate ETH under adversarial perturbations (more accurately, under the quantum PCP conjecture if ETH only applies to extensive energy subspaces). Our results serve as evidence that chaotic local Hamiltonians, such as the SYK model, contain polynomial verifiable quantum states in their low energy regime and may be simpler than general local Hamiltonians if UniqueQMA $\neq$ QMA.

Abstract:QMA is the class of languages that can be decided by an efficient quantum verifier given a quantum witness, whereas QCMA is the class of such languages where the efficient quantum verifier only is given a classical witness. A challenging fundamental goal in quantum query complexity is to find a classical oracle separation for these classes. In this work, we offer a new approach towards proving such a separation that is qualitatively different than prior work, and show that our approach is sound assuming a natural statistical conjecture which may have other applications to quantum query complexity lower bounds.

Abstract:This paper presents stronger methods of achieving perfect completeness in quantum interactive proofs. First, it is proved that any problem in QMA has a two-message quantum interactive proof system of perfect completeness with constant soundness error, where the verifier has only to send a constant number of halves of EPR pairs. This in particular implies that the class QMA is necessarily included by the class QIP_1(2) of problems having two-message quantum interactive proofs of perfect completeness, which gives the first nontrivial upper bound for QMA in terms of quantum interactive proofs. It is also proved that any problem having an $m$-message quantum interactive proof system necessarily has an $(m+1)$-message quantum interactive proof system of perfect completeness. This improves the previous result due to Kitaev and Watrous, where the resulting system of perfect completeness requires $m+2$ messages if not using the parallelization result.

Abstract:We present a protocol that transforms any quantum multi-prover interactive proof into a nonlocal game in which questions consist of logarithmic number of bits and answers of constant number of bits. As a corollary, it follows that the promise problem corresponding to the approximation of the nonlocal value to inverse polynomial accuracy is complete for QMIP*, and therefore NEXP-hard. This establishes that nonlocal games are provably harder than classical games without any complexity theory assumptions. Our result also indicates that gap amplification for nonlocal games may be impossible in general and provides a negative evidence for the feasibility of the gap amplification approach to the multi-prover variant of the quantum PCP conjecture.
QMA vs. QCMA and Pseudorandomness

Abstract:We study a longstanding question of Aaronson and Kuperberg on whether there exists a classical oracle separating $\mathsf{QMA}$ from $\mathsf{QCMA}$. Settling this question in either direction would yield insight into the power of quantum proofs over classical proofs. We show that such an oracle exists if a certain quantum pseudorandomness conjecture holds. Roughly speaking, the conjecture posits that quantum algorithms cannot, by making few queries, distinguish between the uniform distribution over permutations versus permutations drawn from so-called "dense" distributions. Our result can be viewed as establishing a "win-win" scenario: \emph{either} there is a classical oracle separation of $\QMA$ from $\QCMA$, \emph{or} there is quantum advantage in distinguishing pseudorandom distributions on permutations.

Abstract:Quantum non-Markovianity in tripartite quantum states $\rho_{ABC}$ represents a correlation between systems $A$ and $C$ when conditioned on the system $B$ and is known to have both classical and quantum contributions. However, a systematic characterization of the latter is missing. To address this, we propose a faithful measure for non-Markovianity of genuine quantum origin called squashed quantum non-Markovianity (sQNM). It is based on the quantum conditional mutual information and is defined by the left-over non-Markovianity after squashing out all non-quantum contributions. It is lower bounded by the squashed entanglement between non-conditioning systems in the reduced state and is delimited by the extendibility of either of the non-conditioning systems. We show that the sQNM is monogamous, asymptotically continuous, convex, additive on tensor-product states, and generally super-additive. We characterize genuine quantum non-Markovianity as a resource via a convex resource theory after identifying free states with vanishing sQNM and free operations that do not increase sQNM in states. We use our resource-theoretic framework to bound the rate of state transformations under free operations and to study state transformation under non-free operations; in particular, we find the quantum communication cost from Bob ($B$) to Alice ($A$) or Charlie ($C$) is lower bounded by the change in sQNM in the states. The sQNM finds operational meaning; in particular, the optimal rate of private communication in a variant of conditional one-time pad protocol is twice the sQNM. Also, the minimum deconstruction cost for a variant of quantum deconstruction protocol is given by twice the sQNM of the state.

Quantum delegation with an off-the-shelf device

Abstract:Given that reliable cloud quantum computers are becoming closer to reality, the concept of delegation of quantum computations and its verifiability is of central interest. Many models have been proposed, each with specific strengths and weaknesses. Here, we put forth a new model where the client trusts only its classical processing, makes no computational assumptions, and interacts with a quantum server in a single round. In addition, during a set-up phase, the client specifies the size $n$ of the computation and receives an untrusted, off-the-shelf (OTS) quantum device that is used to report the outcome of a single measurement. We show how to delegate polynomial-time quantum computations in the OTS model. This also yields an interactive proof system for all of QMA, which, furthermore, we show can be accomplished in statistical zero-knowledge. This provides the first relativistic (one-round), two-prover zero-knowledge proof system for QMA. As a proof approach, we provide a new self-test for n EPR pairs using only constant-sized Pauli measurements, and show how it provides a new avenue for the use of simulatable codes for local Hamiltonian verification. Along the way, we also provide an enhanced version of a well-known stability result due to Gowers and Hatami and show how it completes a common argument used in self-testing.

Abstract:Complexity theory typically focuses on the difficulty of solving computational problems using classical inputs and outputs, even with a quantum computer. In the quantum world, it is natural to apply a different notion of complexity, namely the complexity of synthesizing quantum states. We investigate a state-synthesizing counterpart of the class NP, referred to as stateQMA, which is concerned with preparing certain quantum states through a polynomial-time quantum verifier with the aid of a single quantum message from an all-powerful but untrusted prover. This is a subclass of the class stateQIP recently introduced by Rosenthal and Yuen (ITCS 2022), which permits polynomially many interactions between the prover and the verifier. Our main result consists of error reduction of this class and its variants with an exponentially small gap or a bounded space, as well as how this class relates to other fundamental state synthesizing classes, i.e., states generated by uniform polynomial-time quantum circuits (stateBQP) and space-uniform polynomial-space quantum circuits (statePSPACE). Furthermore, we establish that the family of UQMA witnesses, considered as one of the most natural candidates, is in stateQMA. Additionally, we demonstrate that stateQCMA achieves perfect completeness.

Abstract:Classically, in saturation-based proof systems, unification has been considered atomic. However, it is also possible to move unification to the calculus level, turning the steps of the unification algorithm into inferences. For calculi that rely on unification procedures returning large or even infinite sets of unifiers, integrating unification into the calculus is an attractive method of dovetailing unification and inference. This applies, for example, to AC-superposition and higher-order superposition. We show that first-order superposition remains complete when moving unification rules to the calculus level. We discuss some of the benefits this has even for standard first-order superposition and provide an experimental evaluation.
