Abstract:Very recently, it was pointed out that when basic ideas of the Swampland program are combined with the cosmological hierarchy problem (i.e. the smallness of the dark energy in Planck units) and together are confronted to experiment lead to the prediction of the existence of a single extra-dimension (dubbed the dark dimension) with characteristic length-scale in the micron range. We propose a feasible test procedure to probe the dark dimension using the highest energy cosmic rays.

Abstract:Our present understanding of elementary particle interactions is the synergic result of developments of theoretical ideas and of experimental advances that lead to the theory known as the Standard Model of particle physics. Despite the uncountable experimental confirmations, we believe that it is not yet the ultimate theory, for a number of reasons that I will briefly recall in this lecture. My main focus will be on the role that Flavour Physics has played in development of the theory in its present formulation, as well as on the opportunities that this sector offers to discover physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract:This short note describes the long collaborative effort between Arizona and Kraków, showing some of the key strangeness signatures of quark-gluon plasma. It further presents an annotated catalog of foundational questions defining the research frontiers which I believe can be addressed in the foreseeable future in the context of relativistic heavy ion collision experiments. The list includes topics that are specific to the field, and ventures towards the known-to-be-unknown that may have a better chance with ions as compared to elementary interactions.

We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHCu0027s flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.
Exploration at the high-energy frontier: ATLAS Run 2 searches investigating the exotic jungle beyond the Standard Model

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider is at the high-energy frontier of particle physics, having produced proton$-$proton collisions during Run 2, from 2015 to 2018, at an unprecedented centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The ATLAS experiment has a broad programme to thoroughly explore this uncharted territory, to seek out new exotic particles predicted by theories that boldly go beyond the Standard Model. Although the Standard Model has been very successful, it leaves many questions unanswered, prompting novel ideas about particles that could be hiding in the data, waiting to be discovered by intrepid explorers. These include dark-matter candidates, hidden-sector particles, new vector resonances, leptoquarks, and vector-like quarks, to name a few examples. Searches for new particles are reported here, with the exception of searches for supersymmetry or extended Higgs sectors as these are the subjects of separate reports.

Abstract: The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Simultaneously, it can measure the fraction of Dark Energy at the percent level up to $z = 5$, thus serving as an unprecedented test of the standard model and opening up a tremendous discovery space.

Abstract:Cosmic high energy neutrinos are inextricably linked to the origin of cosmic rays which is one of the major unresolved questions in astrophysics. In particular, the highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging from conventional shock acceleration to particle physics beyond the Standard Model and processes taking place at the earliest moments of our Universe. Furthermore, many new experimental activities promise a considerable increase of statistics at the highest energies and a combination with gamma-ray and neutrino astrophysics will put strong constraints on these theoretical models. The detection of ultra high energy neutrinos in particular is made likely by new experimental techniques and will open an important new channel. We give an overview over this quickly evolving field with special emphasize on new experimental ideas and possibilities for probing new physics beyond the electroweak scale.

Abstract:Precise manipulation of matter at the atomic or molecular level has provided the path for the nanotechnological revolution impacting diverse fields such as biology, medicine, material science, quantum technologies, and electronics. At the Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN, the AEgIS experiment utilises state-of-the-art technology to store and manipulate synthesised exotic atoms containing both matter and antimatter. Such experiments lay the groundwork for a better understanding of the fundamental interactions and hold the potential to unravel the enigma of the absence of antimatter in our universe. Additionally, the developed techniques advance the technological frontier of controlling the quantum states of ions, a critical aspect of quantum sensing and quantum computing applications.

Abstract:The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber. We report searches for new physics appearing through few-keV-scale electron recoils, using the experiment's first exposure of 60 live days and a fiducial mass of 5.5t. The data are found to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, and limits are set on models for new physics including solar axion electron coupling, solar neutrino magnetic moment and millicharge, and electron couplings to galactic axion-like particles and hidden photons. Similar limits are set on weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter producing signals through ionized atomic states from the Migdal effect.

Abstract:Currently, flavour-cryptoexotic tetraquarks form the most common sort of all experimentally established exotic multiquark hadrons. This note points out a few promising concepts that should help improve theoretical (but, for several reasons, not quite straightforward) analyses of such kind of states: among others, their scope of application encompasses the strong interactions in the limit of (arbitrarily) large numbers of colours, and equally analytical and nonperturbative approaches to multiquark states.

Abstract:We study spectral distortions of diffuse ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino flavour fluxes resulting due to physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Even large spectral differences between flavours at the source are massaged into a common shape at earth by SM oscillations, thus, any significant observed spectral differences are an indicator of new physics present in the oscillation probability during propagation. Neutrino decay and Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) are examples, and result in significant distortion of the fluxes and the well-known bounds on them, which may allow UHE detectors to probe lifetimes, the mass hierarchy and LV parameters over a broad range.

Probing chiral and flavored $Z^\prime$ from cosmic bursts through neutrino interactions

Abstract:The origin of tiny neutrino mass is an unsolved puzzle leading to a variety of phenomenological aspects beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Among several interesting attempts, $U(1)$ gauge extension of Standard Model (SM) is a simple and interesting set-up where the so-called seesaw mechanism is incarnated by the addition of three generations of right-handed neutrinos followed by the breaking of $U(1)$ and electroweak symmetries. Such scenarios are anomaly free in nature appearing with a neutral BSM gauge boson ($Z^\prime$). In addition to that, there comes another open question regarding the existence of a non-luminous, hitherto unidentified object called Dark Matter (DM) originating from the measurement of its relic density. To explore properties of $Z^\prime$, we focus on chiral and flavored scenarios where $Z^\prime-$neutrinos interaction could be probed in the context of cosmic explosions like gamma-ray burst (GRB221009A, so far the highest energy), blazar (TXS 0506+056) and Active galaxy (NGC1068) respectively. The neutrino antineutrino annihilation produces electron-positron pair which could energize GRB through energy deposition. Taking the highest energy GRB under consideration and estimating the energy deposition rates we constrain $Z^\prime$ mass $(M_{Z^\prime})$ and the additional $U(1)$ coupling $(g_X)$ for chiral and flavored scenarios in the Schwarzchild, Hartle-Thorne and modified gravity frameworks. On the other hand, adding viable and alternative DM candidates in these models we study neutrino-DM scattering mediated by $Z^\prime$ in the $t-$ channel and estimate constraints on $g_X-M_{Z^\prime}$ plane using observed data of high energy neutrinos from cosmic blazar and active galaxy at the IceCube experiment. We compare our results with bounds obtained from different scattering, beam-dump and $g-2$ experiments.

Abstract:Quantum gravity phenomenology has been historically regarded as a difficult endeavour, due to the apparent scarcity of phenomena involving the required scales of length (Planck length $l_P$) and energy (Planck energy $E_P$). It was realized, however, that one can look for cumulative effects of a quantum theory of gravity at energies $E/E_P \ll 1$ if even tiny effects are amplified by the large time of flight or very high energies, common to astrophysical phenomena. In the this work, complementary to the COST action CA18108 White Book, we put forward a proposal that quantum gravity phenomenology can be fruitfully pursued also with the help of terrestrial particles accelerators. We first discuss the theoretical background, and then concentrate on deformed discrete symmetries C,P,T. We investigate possible experimental signatures of CPT deformation, particularly concerning the difference in decay time between particles and antiparticles, and fields interference.

SETI at Planck Energy: When Particle Physicists Become Cosmic Engineers

Abstract:What is the meaning of the Fermi Paradox -- are we alone or is starfaring rare? Can general relativity be united with quantum mechanics? The searches for answers to these questions could intersect. It is known that an accelerator capable of energizing particles to the Planck scale requires cosmic proportions. The energy required to run a Planck accelerator is also cosmic, of order 100 M_sun c^2 for a hadron collider, because the natural cross section for Planck physics is so tiny. If aliens are interested in fundamental physics, they could resort to cosmic engineering for their experiments. These colliders are detectable through the vast amount of "pollution" they produce, motivating a YeV SETI program. I investigate what kinds of radiation they would emit in a fireball scenario, and the feasibility of detecting YeV radiation at Earth, particularly YeV neutrinos. Although current limits on YeV neutrinos are weak, Kardashev 3 YeV neutrino sources appear to be at least 30--100 Mpc apart on average, if they are long-lived and emit isotropically. I consider the feasibility of much larger YeV neutrino detectors, including an acoustic detection experiment that spans all of Earth's oceans, and instrumenting the entire Kuiper Belt. Any detection of YeV neutrinos implies an extraordinary phenomenon at work, whether artificial and natural. Searches for YeV neutrinos from any source are naturally commensal, so a YeV neutrino SETI program has value beyond SETI itself, particularly in limiting topological defects. I note that the Universe is very faint in all kinds of nonthermal radiation, indicating that cosmic engineering is extremely rare.

Abstract:We study the phenomenology of a Z(')-boson field coupled to hypercharge. The Z(') propagator has a nontrivial Kallen-Lehmann spectral density due to the mixing with a higher-dimensional inert vector field. As a consequence detection possibilities at hadron colliders are reduced. We determine the range of parameters where this field can be studied at the Tevatron and the LHC through its production cross section via the Drell-Yan mechanism.

Abstract:The Einstein Gravity Explorer mission (EGE) is devoted to a precise measurement of the properties of space-time using atomic clocks. It tests one of the most fundamental predictions of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, the gravitational redshift, and thereby searches for hints of quantum effects in gravity, exploring one of the most important and challenging frontiers in fundamental physics. The primary mission goal is the measurement of the gravitational redshift with an accuracy up to a factor 104 higher than the best current result. The mission is based on a satellite carrying cold atom-based clocks. The payload includes a cesium microwave clock (PHARAO), an optical clock, a femtosecond frequency comb, as well as precise microwave time transfer systems between space and ground. The tick rates of the clocks are continuously compared with each other, and nearly continuously with clocks on earth, during the course of the 3-year mission. The highly elliptic orbit of the satellite is optimized for the scientific goals, providing a large variation in the gravitational potential between perigee and apogee. Besides the fundamental physics results, as secondary goals EGE will establish a global reference frame for the Earth's gravitational potential and will allow a new approach to mapping Earth's gravity field with very high spatial resolution. The mission was proposed as a class-M mission to ESA's Cosmic Vision Program 2015–2025.
Flavor Anisotropy in the High-Energy Astrophysical Neutrino Sky

Abstract:High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, with TeV--PeV energies, offer unique insight into astrophysics and particle physics. Their incoming directions and flavor composition -- i.e., the proportion of electron, muon, and tau neutrinos in their flux -- are, individually, rewarding observables. Combined, they offer new opportunities, hitherto unexplored, that we expose for the first time. Anisotropy in the arrival directions of electron, muon, and tau neutrinos may reveal multiple populations of neutrino sources, differently distributed in the sky, and test whether neutrinos of different flavor propagate preferentially along certain directions, such as expected from breaking Lorentz invariance. Using 7.5 years of public IceCube High-Energy Starting Events, we make the first measurement of the directional flavor composition of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, constrain the presence of flavor dipoles and quadrupoles, and improve constraints on "compass asymmetries" introduced by Lorentz invariance violation. In the near future, upcoming neutrino telescopes will improve these measurements across the board.

Search for New Particles with Flying Quantum Sensors in Space

Abstract:Recent advancements in space science and technologies offer exciting prospects for investigating novel research that is unattainable within terrestrial laboratories. Here we propose the implementation of space-based quantum sensing to explore ultralight new particles beyond the standard model. The central idea involves probing long-range interactions between spin ensembles of space quantum sensors and the particles residing within Earth, mediated by ultralight particles. We show that such interactions can be substantially enhanced in space platforms and thus increase the search sensitivity. In contrast to their terrestrial counterparts, space-based quantum searches exhibit remarkable velocity enhancements, approaching the first cosmic speed, and thus enables the exploration of unexplored parameter space concerning ultralight new particles. Furthermore, the substantial abundance of electrons and nucleons within Earth plays a crucial role in extending the scope of our mission. Our projected search sensitivity can surpass the sensitivities of both terrestrial experiments and proposals by up to approximately 7 orders of magnitude. We also briefly discuss other space mission, including ``space-ground integrated" network of quantum sensors for dark matter searches.
