Abstract:In this work we present a doubled version of the Sau-Luchtin-Tewari-Sarma and Oreg-Refael-von Open proposals thereby obtaining time reversal invariant p-wave superconductivity in both 1D and 2D. This construction is much like the Kane-Mele spin Hall model which is a time reversal invariant doubling of the Haldane model. We show that the low energy effective action for these doubled versions of the Sau-Luchtin-Tewari-Sarma and Oreg-Refael-von Open models corresponds to a single band p-wave time reversal invariant superconductors with pseudo spin degree of freedom instead of spin degree of freedom. There are Majorana fermions at the ends of wires or in vortex cores of these superconductors. Furthermore these are shown to be stable to small perturbations. In the supplement we present physical realization of the system with cold atoms and show a related "no-go" theorem given in Haim et. al. (2019) has too restrictive assumptions to apply to this proposal.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is the realization of 1D and 2D p-wave superconductivity by constructing time-reversal invariant topological superconductors. Specifically, the authors propose a doubled version of the Sau-Lutchyn-Tewari-Sarma (SLTS) and Oreg-Refael-von Oppen (ORO) models, which utilize spin-orbit coupling to maintain time-reversal symmetry without the need for external magnetic fields or ferromagnetic materials.
### Main Objectives:
1. **Time-reversal invariant p-wave superconductivity**: Achieve time-reversal invariant p-wave superconductivity in 1D and 2D by constructing doubled versions of the SLTS and ORO models.
2. **Stability of Majorana fermions**: Demonstrate the presence of stable Majorana fermions at the vortex cores or line ends of these superconductors.
3. **Physical realization**: Propose a physical scheme using cold atoms to realize these systems and show that the previously proposed "no-go theorem" does not apply to this new scheme.
### Specific Methods:
- **Doubled models**: Construct doubled versions of the SLTS and ORO models by introducing two orbitals with specific time-reversal properties.
- **Low-energy effective theory**: Derive the low-energy effective Hamiltonians of these doubled models and show that they correspond to single-band p-wave time-reversal invariant superconductors.
- **Stability analysis**: Use perturbation theory and the Brillouin-Wigner method to prove that Majorana fermions are stable under small perturbations.
### Main Results:
- **1D and 2D models**: Achieved time-reversal invariant p-wave superconductivity in 1D and 2D.
- **Majorana fermions**: Found stable Majorana fermions at the 1D line ends and 2D vortex cores.
- **Physical realization**: Proposed a specific scheme using cold atoms to realize these models and demonstrated that the previously proposed "no-go theorem" is overly restrictive and does not apply to this new scheme.
### Conclusion:
By constructing time-reversal invariant doubled SLTS and ORO models, the authors successfully achieved p-wave superconductivity in 1D and 2D and demonstrated that Majorana fermions in these systems are stable under small perturbations. Additionally, they proposed a physical realization scheme, providing a foundation for future experimental research.
