Abstract:Music-based reminiscence has the potential to positively impact the psychological well-being of older adults. However, the aging process and physiological changes, such as memory decline and limited verbal communication, may impede the ability of older adults to recall their memories and life experiences. Given the advanced capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as generated conversations and images, and their potential to facilitate the reminiscing process, this study aims to explore the design of generative AI to support music-based reminiscence in older adults. This study follows a user-centered design approach incorporating various stages, including detailed interviews with two social workers and two design workshops (involving ten older adults). Our work contributes to an in-depth understanding of older adults' attitudes toward utilizing generative AI for supporting music-based reminiscence and identifies concrete design considerations for the future design of generative AI to enhance the reminiscence experience of older adults.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem discussed in this paper is how to use generative artificial intelligence (AI) to support music reminiscence activities for the elderly. With the growth of the elderly population and physiological changes such as declining memory and limited communication abilities, the ability to recall past events may be affected. The researchers noticed that advanced generative AI systems (such as dialogue generation and image generation) could potentially facilitate the reminiscence process. Therefore, this study aims to explore the design of generative AI to support music-based reminiscence activities, specifically focusing on the impact on the elderly population. Through user-centered design methods, the study involved detailed interviews with social workers and two design workshops involving ten elderly participants. The research primarily addresses two questions: 1. What do the elderly think about using generative AI for music reminiscence? 2. What factors need to be considered in designing generative AI to enhance the reminiscence experience for the elderly? Through the analysis of these activities, the study found that the elderly perceive generative AI as useful in the reminiscence process. For example, AI-generated dialogues and images can help them recall more life details and maintain engagement. They prefer to interact with AI systems on a personal level rather than in a group setting because music-based reminiscence is often personalized. Additionally, they expect the generated content to be more personalized and relevant, and they desire more autonomy in using generative AI systems, such as choosing and adjusting generated images. This research provides valuable insights into understanding the attitudes of the elderly towards generative AI and how to design such technologies to improve their reminiscence experience. It also offers design inspirations for future developments of related technologies.
