Abstract:For many years, I have been collecting math jokes and posting them on my website. I have more than 400 jokes there. In this paper, which is an extended version of my talk at the G4G15, I would like to present 66 of them.

Abstract:Thirty original and collected problems, puzzles, and paradoxes in mathematics and physics are explained in this paper, taught by the author to the elementary and high school teachers at the University of New Mexico - Gallup in 1997-8 and afterwards. They have more an educational interest, because make the students think different! For each "solution" a funny logic is invented in order to give the problem a sense.

Abstract:Many mathematicians find mathematics aesthetically beautiful and even comparable to art forms such as music or painting. On the other hand, every year a great number of school students leave mathematics with total disillusionment and bitterness, without ever witnessing any beauty in it. In this work, we give some strategies to teach mathematics, especially to gifted students and to instill a love of mathematics in them. We will describe an integrated approach to teaching mathematics where students are introduced to more advanced, more elegant and more beautiful aspects of the subject early. The proposed integrated approach takes advantage of the fascinating interconnections between various subfields of mathematics, and even borrows from advanced topics such as number theory and topology. Combining the teaching of computer programming with the teaching of mathematics is another key focus of this work. This opens up the door to explore, not only the beautiful topics such as fractals, computer math art and computer graphics in general, but also real-life applications resulting from computer simulations in engineering and physics and other natural sciences. We will also discuss the use of storytelling, explorations and experimenting, puzzles and creative problem solving etc., to make learning interesting for students. It is important to show students that the `true' essence of mathematics goes beyond the dry procedural drill of learning arithmetic. Students must be provided with the opportunities to experience the `aha moment' resulting from the joy of solving a difficult problem, or from the understanding of a deep concept with complete clarity. We will discuss several strategies, and provide many examples to illustrate how this could be achieved, taking into account the emotional and psychological aspects of mathematical cognition and learning.

Abstract:In this explanatory work, we make an attempt to briefly discuss the work and technical achievements of twenty female mathematicians. The work may be useful as a historical resource, but there is very little biography or history, and the primary focus is on the mathematics. In fact, the main use will probably be for a student who is coming to a new area of mathematics for the first time and needs an overview of some of the key results and references viewed through the work of one of that area's main contributors. The work of the following mathematicians is discussed: Sofia Kovalevskaya, Emmy Noether, Mary Cartwright, Julia Robinson, Olga Ladyzhenska, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat, Olga Oleinik, Charlotte Fischer, Karen Uhlenbeck, Krystyna Kuperberg, Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann, Dusa McDuff, Karen Vogtmann, Carolyn Gordon, Frances Kirwan, Leila Schneps, Claire Voisin, Olga Holtz, Maryam Mirzakhani and Maryna Viazowska. Abstract:This is a collection of teaching materials used in several Russian universities, schools, and mathematical circles. Most problems are chosen in such a way that in the course of the solution and discussion a reader learns important mathematical ideas and theories. The materials can be used by pupils and students for self-study, and by teachers. This is an abridged pre-copyedit version of the published book submitted with the permission of the publisher. Each included individual material is self-contained and ready-for-use. Solutions to problems are not included intentionally. This collection consolidates updates of several arXiv submissions, e.g., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1305.2598" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1305.2598">arXiv:1305.2598</a>.

Abstract:Mathematics is probably the only subject that can be classified both as art as well as science - former, because it is not constrained by the real world and latter because it is a logical system with precisely defined rules as well as primitives that lead to unambiguous nontrivial theorems. Indian (and of Indian origin) mathematicians have continued to do seminal work till present times, culminating in Manjul Bhargava receiving the Fields Medal last year. In such fabulous times, a non-mathematician ponders about the nature of mathematics, and revisits the question: why are fundamental laws of Nature inherently mathematical?

Fun With Fourier Series

Abstract:By using computers to do experimental manipulations on Fourier series, we construct additional series with interesting properties. For example, we construct several series whose sums remain unchanged when the nth term is multiplied by sin(n)/n. One series with this property is this classic series for pi/4: pi/4 = 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 ... = 1*(sin(1)/1) - (1/3)*(sin(3)/3) + (1/5)*(sin(5)/5).... Another example is sum (n = 1 to infinity) of (sin(n)/n) = sum (n = 1 to infinity) of (sin(n)/n)^2 = (pi - 1)/2. This material should be accessible to undergraduates. This paper also includes a Mathematica package that makes it easy to calculate and graph the Fourier series of many types of functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the generation of one-liner jokes through multi-step reasoning. Our work involved reconstructing the process behind creating humorous one-liners and developing a working prototype for humor generation. We conducted comprehensive experiments with human participants to evaluate our approach, comparing it with human-created jokes, zero-shot GPT-4 generated humor, and other baselines. The evaluation focused on the quality of humor produced, using human labeling as a benchmark. Our findings demonstrate that the multi-step reasoning approach consistently improves the quality of generated humor. We present the results and share the datasets used in our experiments, offering insights into enhancing humor generation with artificial intelligence.

Iconic Mathematics: Math Designed to Suit the Mind

Abstract:Mathematics is a struggle for many. To make it more accessible, behavioral and educational scientists are redesigning how it is taught. To a similar end, a few rogue mathematicians and computer scientists are doing something more radical: they are redesigning mathematics itself, improving its ergonomic features. Charles Peirce, an important contributor to ordinary symbolic logic, also introduced a rigorous but non-symbolic, graphical alternative to it that is easier to picture. In the spirit of this iconic logic, George Spencer-Brown founded iconic mathematics. Performing iconic arithmetic, algebra, and even trigonometry, resembles doing calculations on an abacus, which is still popular in education today, has aided humanity for millennia, helps even when it is merely imagined, and ameliorates severe disability in basic computation. Interestingly, whereas some intellectually disabled individuals excel in very complex numerical tasks, others of normal intelligence fail even in very simple ones. A comparison of their wider psychological profiles suggests that iconic mathematics ought to suit the very people traditional mathematics leaves behind.

Abstract:In this work, we present a new dataset for computational humor, specifically comparative humor ranking, which attempts to eschew the ubiquitous binary approach to humor detection. The dataset consists of tweets that are humorous responses to a given hashtag. We describe the motivation for this new dataset, as well as the collection process, which includes a description of our semi-automated system for data collection. We also present initial experiments for this dataset using both unsupervised and supervised approaches. Our best supervised system achieved 63.7% accuracy, suggesting that this task is much more difficult than comparable humor detection tasks. Initial experiments indicate that a character-level model is more suitable for this task than a token-level model, likely due to a large amount of puns that can be captured by a character-level model.

Abstract:Mathematical equations are an important part of dissemination and communication of scientific information. Students, however, often feel challenged in reading and understanding math content and equations. With the development of the Web, students are posting their math questions online. Nevertheless, constructing a concise math headline that gives a good description of the posted detailed math question is nontrivial. In this study, we explore a novel summarization task denoted as geNerating A concise Math hEadline from a detailed math question (NAME). Compared to conventional summarization tasks, this task has two extra and essential constraints: 1) Detailed math questions consist of text and math equations which require a unified framework to jointly model textual and mathematical information; 2) Unlike text, math equations contain semantic and structural features, and both of them should be captured together. To address these issues, we propose MathSum, a novel summarization model which utilizes a pointer mechanism combined with a multi-head attention mechanism for mathematical representation augmentation. The pointer mechanism can either copy textual tokens or math tokens from source questions in order to generate math headlines. The multi-head attention mechanism is designed to enrich the representation of math equations by modeling and integrating both its semantic and structural features. For evaluation, we collect and make available two sets of real-world detailed math questions along with human-written math headlines, namely EXEQ-300k and OFEQ-10k. Experimental results demonstrate that our model (MathSum) significantly outperforms state-of-the-art models for both the EXEQ-300k and OFEQ-10k datasets.

Abstract:Using question 28 from the May Problems to Ponder in volume 114, the author and her seventh- and eighth-grade students launched into a discussion of creativity, linearity, piecewise, and recursive definitions of functions. This pattern to ponder provided rich mathematical opportunities for all students in my middle school classroom.

Abstract:The metaphors that students form and encounter have been shown to exert a powerful influence on how they think about mathematics. In this paper, we explore the linguistic metaphors about learning and doing mathematics that were prevalent in 11 advanced mathematics lectures. We present four metaphor clusters that were common in the corpus that we analyzed: Learning Mathematics is a Journey, Doing Mathematics is Work, Mathematics is Discovery, and Presenting Mathematics is a Story. We conclude the paper by discussing the implications of the metaphors that mathematicians use and students hear in their mathematics courses.

Abstract:Most if not all of today's revolutionary technologies have a common foundation, namely the intelligent use of information. It is clear that computers play a central role: but the contribution of mathematics, though less visible, is no less critical. The conceptual tools and insights provided by mathematics are the keys to unlocking the full information-processing potential of computers. Academic mathematicians now have an unparalleled opportunity to make a huge impact on modern society: but to take advantage of this opportunity, mathematicians must prioritize making these tools and concepts accessible to a wider audience. In this paper we present three examples of mathematics with significant social benefit: Dmitri Bertsimas' study of diabetes using k-nearest-neighbor methodology; Development of mathematical software (MATLAB and Sage); and ongoing development of data representation and visualization software to facilitate analysis of survey data. We also suggest steps to be taken by academic mathematicians in Nigeria towards enhancing the positive impact of mathematics on society.
