Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for dispersion managed nonlinear Schroedinger equations, where the dispersion map is assumed to be periodic and piecewise constant in time. We establish local and global well-posedness results and the possibility of finite time blow-up. In addition, we shall study the scaling limit of fast dispersion management and establish convergence to an effective model with averaged dispersion.

Abstract:A deterministic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems is proposed to predict the approximate response of many degree-of-freedom autonomous or non-autonomous strongly nonlinear systems. The form and dimension of the averaged equations depend on the number of degree-of-freedom and the number of resonant relations of the associated Hamiltonian systems. In non-resonant case, the averaged equations for n action variables or n independent integrals of motion are derived. In resonant case, the averaged equations for n action variables and α combinations of angle variables are derived. Two examples are given to illustrate the application of the proposed method. It is shown that the analytical results agree well with those from numerical solution even for systems with very strong nonlinearity.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging method for single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) strongly nonlinear oscillators under Poisson white noise excitation is proposed by using the so-called generalized harmonic functions. The stationary averaged generalized Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (GFPK) equation is solved by using the classical perturbation method. Then the procedure is applied to estimate the stationary probability density of response of a Duffing-van der Pol oscillator under Poisson white noise excitation. Theoretical results agree well with Monte Carlo simulations.
Small and large data scattering for the dispersion-managed NLS

Abstract:We prove several scattering results for dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In particular, we establish small-data scattering for both `intercritical' and `mass-subcritical' powers by suitable modifications of the standard approach via Strichartz estimates. In addition, we prove scattering for arbitrary data in a weighted Sobolev space for intercritical powers by establishing a pseudoconformal energy estimate. We also rule out (unmodified) scattering for sufficiently low powers. Finally, we give some remarks concerning blowup for the focusing equation.

Abstract:The existence regimes and dynamics of soliton molecules in dispersion-managed (DM) optical fibers have been studied. Initially we develop a variational approximation to describe the periodic dynamics of a soliton molecule within each unit cell of the dispersion map. The obtained system of coupled equations for the pulse width and chirp allows to find the parameters of DM soliton molecules for the given dispersion map and pulse energy. Then by means of a scaling transformation and averaging procedure we reduce the original nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with piecewise-constant periodic dispersion to its counterpart with constant coefficients and additional parabolic potential. The obtained averaged NLSE with expulsive potential can explain the essential features of solitons and soliton molecules in DM fibers related to their energy loss during propagation. Also, the model of averaged NLSE predicts the instability of the temporal position of the soliton, which may lead to difficulty in holding the pulse in the middle of its time slot. All numerical simulations are performed using the parameters of the existing DM fiber setup and illustrated via pertinent examples.

Averaging of strong magnetic nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the energy space

Abstract:In this study, we consider two nonlinear Schrödinger-type models that are derived by R L. Frank, F. Méhats, C. Sparber [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1611.01574" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1611.01574">arXiv:1611.01574</a>] to study 3D nonlinear Schrödinger equations under strong magnetic fields. One model is derived by spatial scaling and the other is obtained by averaging the spatial scaled model over time. We study these models in the energy space to obtain global solutions and improve the convergence result over an arbitrarily long time. Regarding the nonic nonlinear power of the time averaged model, we prove a scattering result under a scaling-invariant small-energy condition, which underlines energy-criticality of the nonic case.

Abstract:We show that any weak solution of the Gabitov-Turitsyn equation describing dispersion managed solitons together with its Fourier transform decay exponentially. This strong regularity result extends a recent result of Erdogan, Hundertmark and Lee in two directions, to arbitrary non-negative average dispersion and, more importantly, to rather general dispersion profiles, which cover most, if not all, physically relevant cases.

Abstract:We study stochastic perturbations of linear systems of the form where is a linear operator with non-zero imaginary spectrum. It is assumed that the vector field and the matrix function are locally Lipschitz with at most polynomial growth at infinity, that the equation is well posed and a few of first moments of the norms of solutions are bounded uniformly in . We use Khasminski's approach to stochastic averaging to show that, as , a solution , written in the interaction representation in terms of the operator , for converges in distribution to a solution of an effective equation. The latter is obtained from by means of certain averaging. Assuming that equation and/or the effective equation are mixing, we examine this convergence further. Bibliography: 27 titles.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging method for predicting the response of multi-degree-of-freedom quasi-nonintegrable-Hamiltonian systems (nonintegrable-Hamiltonian systems with lightly linear and (or) nonlinear dampings subject to weakly external and (or) parametric excitations of Poisson white noises) is proposed. A one-dimensional averaged generalized Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov equation for the transition probability density of the Hamiltonian is derived and the probability density of the stationary response of the system is obtained by using the perturbation method. Two examples, two linearly and nonlinearly coupled van der Pol oscillators and two-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact system, are given to illustrate the application and validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic dispersion management. We first establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the underlying linear equation with suitable dispersion maps. As an application, we establish a small-data scattering result for the $3d$ cubic equation. Finally, we use a virial argument to demonstrate the existence of blowup solutions for the $3d$ cubic equation with piecewise constant dispersion map.

Abstract:This paper explores a non-linear, non-local model describing the evolution of a single species. We investigate scenarios where the spatial domain is either an arbitrary bounded and open subset of the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space or a periodic environment modeled by $n$-dimensional torus. The analysis includes the study of spectrum of the linear, bounded operator in the considered equation, which is a scaled, non-local analogue of classical Laplacian with Neumann boundaries. In particular we show the explicit formulas for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Moreover we show the asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues. Within the context of the non-linear evolution problem, we establish the existence of an invariant region, give a criterion for convergence to the mean mass, and construct spatially heterogeneous steady states.

Abstract:Dispersive averaging effects are used to show that KdV equation with periodic boundary conditions possesses high frequency solutions which behave nearly linearly. Numerical simulations are presented which indicate high accuracy of this approximation. Furthermore, this result is applied to shallow water wave dynamics in the limit of KdV approximation, which is obtained by asymptotic analysis in combination with numerical simulations of KdV.

Abstract:We consider the averaging principle for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations. Under some assumptions providing existence of a unique invariant measure of the fast motion with the frozen slow component, we calculate limiting slow motion. The study of solvability of Kolmogorov equations in Hilbert spaces and the analysis of regularity properties of solutions, allow to generalize the classical approach to finite-dimensional problems of this type in the case of SPDE's.

Abstract:The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) in one dimension is considered in the presence of an intensity-dependent dispersion term. We study bright solitary waves with smooth profiles which extend from the limit where the dependence of the dispersion coefficient on the wave intensity is negligible to the limit where the solitary wave becomes singular due to vanishing dispersion coefficient. We analyze and numerically explore the stability for such smooth solitary waves, showing with the help of numerical approximations that the family of solitary waves becomes unstable in the intermediate region between the two limits, while being stable in both limits. This bistability, that has also been observed in other NLS equations with the generalized nonlinearity, brings about interesting dynamical transitions from one stable branch to another stable branch, that are explored in direct numerical simulations of the NLS equation with the intensity-dependent dispersion term.

Abstract:We study the existence of normalized ground state solutions to a mixed dispersion fourth-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation with combined power-type nonlinearities. By analyzing the subadditivity of the ground state energy with respect to the prescribed mass, we employ a constrained minimization method to establish the existence of ground state that corresponds to a local minimum of the associated functional. Under certain conditions, by studying the monotonicity of ground state energy as the mass varies, we apply the constrained minimization arguments on the Nehari-Pohozaev manifold to prove the existence of normalized ground state solutions. Abstract:In this paper, we study averaging principle for a class of McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (SDEs) that contain multiplicative fractional noise with Hurst parameter $H > $ 1/2 and highly oscillatory drift coefficient. Here the integral corresponding to fractional Brownian motion is the generalized Riemann-Stieltjes integral. Using Khasminskii's time discretization techniques, we prove that the solution of the original system strongly converges to the solution of averaging system as the times scale $ \epsilon $ gose to zero in the supremum- and Hölder-topologies which are sharpen existing ones in the classical Mckean-Vlasov SDEs framework.

Abstract:In this paper we present an averaging technique applicable to the design of zeroth-order Nash equilibrium seeking algorithms. First, we propose a multi-timescale discrete-time averaging theorem that requires only that the equilibrium is semi-globally practically stabilized by the averaged system, while also allowing the averaged system to depend on ``fast" states. Furthermore, sequential application of the theorem is possible, which enables its use for multi-layer algorithm design. Second, we apply the aforementioned averaging theorem to prove semi-global practical convergence of the zeroth-order information variant of the discrete-time projected pseudogradient descent algorithm, in the context of strongly monotone, constrained Nash equilibrium problems. Third, we use the averaging theory to prove the semi-global practical convergence of the asynchronous pseudogradient descent algorithm to solve strongly monotone unconstrained Nash equilibrium problems. Lastly, we apply the proposed asynchronous algorithm to the connectivity control problem in multi-agent systems.
Averaging principle for semilinear slow-fast rough partial differential equations

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the averaging principle for a class of semilinear slow-fast partial differential equations driven by finite-dimensional rough multiplicative noise. Specifically, the slow component is driven by a general random $\gamma$-Hölder rough path for some $\gamma \in (1/3,1/2)$, while the fast component is driven by a Brownian rough path. Using controlled rough path theory and the classical Khasminskii's time discretization scheme, we demonstrate that the slow component converges strongly to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation under the Hölder topology.

Abstract:We quantify noise-induced phase deviations of dispersion-managed solitons in optical fiber communications and femtosecond lasers. We first develop a perturbation theory for the dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrodinger equation (DMNLSE) in order to compute the noise-induced mean and variance of the soliton parameters. We then use the analytical results to guide importance-sampled Monte-Carlo simulations of the noise-driven DMNLSE. Comparison of these results with those from the original, un-averaged, governing equations confirm the validity of the DMNLSE as a model for many dispersion-managed systems, and quantify the increased robustness of dispersion-managed solitons with respect to noise-induced phase jitter.
