Abstract:In this paper, the limit points of the sequence of arithmetic means 1n∑m=1n{Hm}σ for n=1,2,3,... are studied, where Hm is the mth harmonic number with fractional part {Hm} and σ is a fixed positive constant. In particular, for σ=1, it is shown that the largest limit point of the above sequence is 1/(e−1)=0.581976..., its smallest limit point is 1−log(e−1)=0.458675..., and all limit points form a closed interval between these two constants. A similar result holds for the sequence 1n∑m=1nf({Hm}), n=1,2,3,..., where f(x)=xσ is replaced by an arbitrary absolutely continuous function f in [0,1].

Abstract:We work toward the arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity (AQUE) conjecture for sequences of Hecke--Maass forms on hyperbolic $4$-manifolds. We show that limits of such forms can only scar on totally geodesic $3$-submanifolds, and in fact that all ergodic components of the microlocal lift other than the uniform measure arise from the uniform measures on these submanifolds.

We obtain a power saving result over the local bound for the period of $\psi$ along $Y$, by applying the method of arithmetic amplification developed by Iwaniec and Sarnak.

Abstract:We show that the spectrum of every $\mathbb{R}-$isotropic homogeneous binary form $P$ of degree $n\geq3$ is an interval of the form $[0,M_P],$ where $M_P$ is some positive constant. This completes the discussion around a conjecture of Mordell from 1940 (disproved by Davenport) regarding the existence of spectral gaps for binary cubic forms and further settles Mahler's program for binary forms of every degree.

Abstract:In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic setting. In particular, given any arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold derived from a quaternion algebra, any finite subset $S$ of its geodesic length spectrum, and any $k \geq 2$, we produce infinitely many $k$-tuples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds which are pairwise non-commensurable, have geodesic length spectra containing $S$, and have volumes lying in an interval of (universally) bounded length. The main technical ingredient in our proof is a bounded gaps result for prime ideals in number fields lying in Chebotarev sets which extends recent work of Thorner.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to investigate the concentration properties of spectral projectors on manifolds. This question has been intensively studied (by Logvinenko--Sereda, Nazarov, Jerison--Lebeau, Kovrizhkin, Egidi--Seelmann--Veseli{ć}, Burq--Moyano, among others) in connection with the uncertainty principle. We provide the first high-frequency results in a geometric setting which is neither Euclidean nor a perturbation of Euclidean. Namely, we prove the natural (and optimal) uncertainty principle for the spectral projector on the hyperbolic half-plane.

Abstract:DeMarco, Krieger, and Ye conjectured that there is a uniform bound B , depending only on the degree d , so that any pair of holomorphic maps with degree will either share all of their preperiodic points or have at most in common. Here we show that this uniform bound holds for a Zariski open and dense set in the space of all pairs, , for each degree . The proof involves a combination of arithmetic intersection theory and complex-dynamical results, especially as developed recently by Gauthier and Vigny, Yuan and Zhang, and Mavraki and Schmidt. In addition, we present alternate proofs of the main results of DeMarco, Krieger, and Ye [ Uniform Manin-Mumford for a family of genus 2 curves , Ann. of Math. (2) 191 (2020), 949–1001; Common preperiodic points for quadratic polynomials , J. Mod. Dyn. 18 (2022), 363–413] and of Poineau [ Dynamique analytique sur II : Écart uniforme entre Lattès et conjecture de Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel , Preprint (2022), arXiv:2207.01574 [math.NT]]. In fact, we prove a generalization of a conjecture of Bogomolov, Fu, and Tschinkel in a mixed setting of dynamical systems and elliptic curves.

Boundary exceptional sets for radial limits of superharmonic functions on non-positively curved Harmonic manifolds of purely exponential volume growth

Abstract:By classical Fatou type theorems in various setups, it is well-known that positive harmonic functions have non-tangential limit at almost every point on the boundary. In this paper, in the setting of non-positively curved Harmonic manifolds of purely exponential volume growth, we are interested in the size of the exceptional sets of points on the boundary at infinity, where a suitable function blows up faster than a prescribed growth rate, along radial geodesic rays. For Poisson integrals of complex measures, we obtain a sharp bound on the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional sets, in terms of the mean curvature of horospheres and the parameter of the growth rate. In the case of the Green potentials, we obtain similar upper bounds and also construct Green potentials that blow up faster than a prescribed rate on lower Hausdorff dimensional realizable sets. So we get a gap in the corresponding Hausdorff dimensions due to the assumption of variable pinched non-positive sectional curvature. We also obtain a Riesz decomposition theorem for subharmonic functions. Combining the above results we get our main result concerning Hausdorff dimensions of the exceptional sets of positive superharmonic functions.

Low-lying resonances for infinite-area hyperbolic surfaces with long closed geodesics

Abstract:We consider sequences $(X_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of coverings of convex cocompact hyperbolic surfaces $X$ with Euler characterictic $\chi(X_n)$ tending to $-\infty$ as $n\to \infty.$ We prove that for $n$ large enough, each $X_n$ has an abundance of "low-lying" resonances, provided the length of the shortest closed geodesic on $X_n$ grows sufficiently fast. When applied to congruence covers we obtain a bound that improves upon a result of Jakobson, Naud, and the author in \cite{JNS}. Our proof uses the wave 0-trace formula of Guillopé--Zworski \cite{GZ99} together with specifically tailored test-functions with rapidly decaying Fourier transform.

Abstract:We study algebraic points of bounded degree on polarized projective varieties. To do so, we refine further the filtration construction and Subspace Theorem approach, for the study of integral points, which has origins in the work of Corvaja-Zannier, Levin, Evertse and Autissier. Our main result shows how a conjecture of H.~P.~Schlickewei implies Second Main Arithmetic Schmidt's Subspace type inequalities for polarized projective varieties and points of bounded degree.

Abstract:In a well-known paper by Bruna, Nagel and Wainger [BNW], Fourier transform decay estimates were proved for smooth hypersurfaces of finite line type bounding a convex domain. In this paper, we generalize their results in the following ways. First, for a surface that is locally the graph of a convex real analytic function, we show that a natural analogue holds even when the surface in question is not of finite line type. Secondly, we show a result for a general surface that is locally the graph of a convex $C^2$ function, or a piece of such a surface defined through real analytic equations, that implies an analogous Fourier transform decay theorem in situations where the oscillatory index is less than $1$. In such situations, for a compact surface the exponent provided is sharp. This result has implications for lattice point discrepancy problems, which we describe.

Bounds on spectral gaps of Hyperbolic spin surfaces

Abstract:We describe a method for constraining Laplacian and Dirac spectra of two dimensional compact orientable hyperbolic spin manifolds and orbifolds. The key ingredient is an infinite family of identities satisfied by the spectra. These spectral identities follow from the consistency between 1) the spectral decomposition of functions on the spin bundle into irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and 2) associativity of pointwise multiplication of functions. Applying semidefinite programming methods to our identities produces rigorous upper bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap as well as on the Dirac spectral gap conditioned on the former. In several examples, our bounds are nearly sharp; a numerical algorithm based on the Selberg trace formula shows that the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, a particular surface with signature $[1;3]$, and the Bolza surface nearly saturate the bounds at genus $0$, $1$ and $2$ respectively. Under additional assumptions on the number of harmonic spinors carried by the spin-surface, we obtain more restrictive bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap. In particular, these bounds apply to hyperelliptic surfaces. We also determine the set of Laplacian spectral gaps attained by all compact orientable two-dimensional hyperbolic spin orbifolds. We show that this set is upper bounded by $12.13798$; this bound is nearly saturated by the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, whose first non-zero Laplacian eigenvalue is $\lambda^{(0)}_1\approx 12.13623$.

Abstract:We prove a polynomial upper bound on the number of resonances in a disc whose radius tends to infinity for even asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with real-analytic ends. Our analysis also gives a similar upper bound on the number of quasinormal frequencies for Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes.

Abstract:We establish new upper bounds on the number of failures of the integral Hasse principle within the family of Markoff type cubic surfaces $x^2+ y^2+ z^2- xyz= a$ with $|a|\leq A$ as $A\to \infty$. Our bound improves upon existing work of Ghosh and Sarnak. As a result, we demonstrate that the integral Hasse principle holds for a density $1$ of surfaces in certain sparse sequences.

Abstract:Let and be distributions of points on the complex plane . The following problem dates back to F. Carlson, T. Carleman, L. Schwartz, A. F. Leont'ev, B. Ya. Levin, J.-P. Kahane, and others. For which and , for an entire function of exponential type which vanishes on , there exists an entire function of exponential type that vanishes on and is such that on the imaginary axis? The classical Malliavin-Rubel theorem of the early 1960s completely solves this problem for "positive" and (which lie only on the positive semiaxis). Several generalizations of this criterion were established by the author of the present paper in the late 1980s for "complex" and separated by angles from the imaginary axis, with some advances in the 2020s. In this paper, we solve more involved problems in a more general subharmonic framework for distributions of masses on . All the previously mentioned results can be obtained from the main results of this paper in a much stronger form (even for the initial formulation for distributions of points and and entire functions and of exponential type). Some results of the present paper are closely related to the famous Beurling-Malliavin theorems on the radius of completeness and a multiplier.

Algebraic billiards in the Fermat hyperbola

Abstract:Algebraic billiards in a plane curve of degree $d \geq 2$ is a rational correspondence on a surface. The dynamical degree is an algebraic analogue of entropy that measures intersection-theoretic complexity. We compute a lower bound on the dynamical degree of billiards in the generic algebraic curve of degree $d$ over any field of characteristic coprime to $2d$, complementing the upper bound in our previous work. To do this, we specialize to a highly symmetric curve that we call the Fermat hyperbola. Over $\mathbb{C}$, we construct an algebraically stable model for this billiard via an iterated blowup. Over general fields, we compute the growth of a particular big and nef divisor.

Abstract:This paper deals with the $\Gamma$-lattice points problem associated to a discrete subgroup of motions $\Gamma$ in the complex hyperbolic space $\mathbb{C} H^n$. We give two integral formulas for the local average of the number $N(T, z, z')$ of $\Gamma$- lattice points in a sphere of radius $T$ in $\mathbb{C} H^n$. The first on is in terms of the solution of the $\Gamma$-automorphic wave equation on $\mathbb{C} H^n$ and the second is given in terms of the spectral function of the Laplace-Beltrami operator under $\Gamma$-automorphic boundary conditions. We use the obtained integral formulas to obtain an asymptotic behavior of the number $N(T, z, z')$ as $T\rightarrow \infty$, with an estimate of the remainder term. Our principal tools are the explicit solution of the wave equation on the complex hyperbolic space, special functions and spectral theory of the Laplace-Beltrami operator under $\Gamma$ automorphic boundary conditions.

Compactness of Marked Length Isospectral Sets of Birkhoff Billiard Tables

Abstract:We prove that equivalence classes of marked length isospectral Birkhoff billiard tables are compact in the $C^\infty$ topology, analogous to the Laplace spectral results of Melrose, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak. To do so, we derive a hierarchical structure for the integral invariants of Marvizi and Melrose, or equivalently the coefficients of a caustic length-Lazutkin parameter expansion, which are in turn algebraically equivalent to the Taylor coefficients of Mather's $\beta$ function (also called the mean minimal action). Under a generically satisfied noncoincidence condition, these are also Laplace spectral invariants and can be used to hear the shape of certain drumheads. As a byproduct, we obtain an independent proof of the compactness of Laplace isospectral sets for strictly convex planar billiard tables. The proof of the structure theorem uses an interpolating Hamiltonian for nearly glancing billiard orbits and some analytic number theory to compute its Taylor coefficients.

Abstract:This paper shows that immersed totally geodesic $m$-dimensional suborbifolds of $n$-dimensional arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds correspond to finite subgroups of the commensurator whenever $m \geqslant \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$. We call such totally geodesic suborbifolds finite centraliser subspaces (or fc-subspaces) and use them to formulate an arithmeticity criterion for hyperbolic lattices. We show that a hyperbolic orbifold $M$ is arithmetic if and only if it has infinitely many fc-subspaces, exhibiting examples of non-arithmetic orbifolds that contain non-fc subspaces of codimension one. We provide an algebraic characterisation of totally geodesically immersed suborbifolds of arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds by analysing Vinberg's commensurability invariants. This allows us to construct examples with the property that the adjoint trace field of the geodesic suborbifold properly contains the adjoint trace field of the orbifold. The case of special interest is that of exceptional trialitarian $7$-dimensional orbifolds. We show that every such orbifold contains a totally geodesic arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-orbifold of exceptional type. Finally, we study arithmetic properties of orbifolds that descend to their totally geodesic suborbifolds, proving that all suborbifolds in a (quasi-)arithmetic orbifold are (quasi-)arithmetic.
