Abstract:The classical Pólya-Tchebotarev problem, commonly stated as a max-min logarithmic energy problem, asks for finding a compact of minimal capacity in the complex plane which connects a prescribed collection of fixed points. Variants of this problem have found ramifications and applications in the theory of non-hermitian orthogonal polynomials, random matrices, approximation theory, among others. Here we consider an extension of this classical problem, including a semiclassical external field, and enforcing finitely many prescribed collections of points to be connected, possibly also to infinity. Our method is based on Rakhmanov's approach to max-min problems in logarithmic potential theory, utilizes the developed machinery by Martínez-Finkelshtein and Rakhmanov on critical measures, and extends the development of Kuijlaars and the second named author from the context of polynomial external fields to the semiclassical case considered here.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve?
This paper aims to solve the Pólya - Tchebotarev problem with a semi - classical external field. Specifically, it studies how to find a compact and connected set \(K^*\) in the complex plane that connects a given finite point set \(C\subset\mathbb{C}\), such that the max - min problem of this set under the weighted energy function reaches the optimal solution.
#### Classical Pólya - Tchebotarev problem
The classical Pólya - Tchebotarev problem is usually formulated as a max - min problem of logarithmic energy, which requires finding a compact set in the complex plane with the minimum capacity and connecting a given set of fixed points. This problem has wide applications in areas such as non - Hermitian orthogonal polynomials, random matrix theory, and approximation theory.
#### Extended problem
This paper considers an extended version of the classical problem by adding a semi - classical external field and forcing several predetermined point sets to be connected, possibly including the point at infinity. Specifically, the problem to be solved in the paper can be formalized as follows:
For a given finite point set \(C\subset\mathbb{C}\) and an appropriate function \(\varphi\) defined on \(\mathbb{C}\), find a compact and connected set \(K^*\subset\mathbb{C}\) that contains \(C\), such that the following max - min problem:
\[
\sup_{C\subset K, K\text{ compact and connected}} \inf_{\text{supp }\mu\subset K} \left(\iint\log\frac{1}{|x - y|}d\mu(x)d\mu(y)+ 2\int\varphi(x)d\mu(x)\right)
\]
reaches the optimal solution at \(K = K^*\).
#### Main methods and techniques
The methods adopted in the paper are based on Rakhmanov's research on the max - min problem in logarithmic potential theory, utilize the development of Martínez - Finkelshtein and Rakhmanov on critical measures, and generalize the work of Kuijlaars and the second author in polynomial external fields to the semi - classical case here.
#### Key results
The main result of the paper is to prove that the above max - min energy problem always has a solution \(\Gamma_0\in T\), and this solution and its equilibrium measure \(\mu_0\) satisfy the following properties:
1. \(\Gamma_0\) is the union of a finite number of analytic arcs.
2. The function \(R(z)=(C_{\mu_0}(z)+\Phi'(z))^2\) can be extended to a rational function, whose simple poles belong to the fixed point set \(C\), double poles coincide with the logarithmic singularities of \(\Phi\), and the remaining poles have an even order of at least 4 and coincide with the poles of the rational part of \(\Phi\).
3. The equilibrium measure \(\mu_0\) is supported on the critical trajectories of the quadratic differential \(\wp=-R(z)dz^2\), is absolutely continuous with respect to the arc - length measure on each analytic sub - arc, and has a density of \(d\mu_0(s)=\frac{1}{\pi i}\sqrt{R_+(s)}ds\).
In addition, the paper also discusses the close connection between these problems and the zero - distribution of non - Hermitian orthogonal polynomials, especially the application of the S - property.
Through these studies, the paper not only solves the Pólya - Tchebotarev problem with a semi - classical external field, but also unifies many existing works in one framework, showing how to use the techniques developed in recent years to handle more general versions of the Pólya - Chebotarev problem.
