Abstract:We show a general connection between the reduced-fidelity susceptibility and quantum phase transitions, and derive an explicit expression of the reduced-fidelity susceptibility for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg chain, which has both SU(2) and translational symmetries. We find that the reduced-fidelity susceptibility is directly related to the square of the second derivative of ground-state energy, which means that it is an effective indicator of the second-order quantum phase transitions. In terms of this indicator, we explicitly examine the critical behavior of the spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg chain. Moreover, we give another two exemplifications to show that the results may also be extended to high-spin systems.

Abstract:We use reduced fidelity approach to characterize quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg chain in the antiferromagnetic case. The reduced fidelity susceptibilities between two nearest-neighboring spin pairs are considered. We find that they are directly related to the square of the second derivative of the ground-state energy. This enables us to conclude that the former might be a more effective indicator of the second-order quantum phase transitions than the latter. Two further exemplifications are given to confirm the conclusion is available for a broad class of systems with SU(2) and translation symmetries. Moreover, a general connection between reduced fidelity susceptibility and quantum phase transitions is illustrated.

Abstract:The coupled cluster method (CCM) is applied to the spin-one anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) on the square lattice at zero temperature using a new high-order CCM ground-state formalism for general quantum spin number ($s \ge 1/2$). The results presented constitute the first such application of this new formalism, and they are shown to be among the most accurate results for the ground-state energy and sublattice magnetisation of this model as yet determined. We ``track'' the solution to the CCM equations at a given level of approximation with respect to the anisotropy parameter, $\Delta$, from the trivial Ising limit ($\Delta \to \infty$) down to a critical value $\Delta_c$, at which point this solution terminates. This behaviour is associated with a phase transition in the system, and hence a primary result of these high-order CCM calculations is that they provide an accurate and unbiased (i.e., {\it ab initio}) estimation of the position of the quantum phase transition point as a function of the anisotropy parameter. Our result is, namely, that this point occurs at (or slightly below) the isotropic Heisenberg point at $\Delta=1$, for this model.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of an XYZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which describes the low-energy behaviors of a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosonic model in the deep insulating region. The entropy and the specific heat are calculated numerically by the quasi-exact transfer-matrix renormalization group. In particular, in the limit $U^\prime/U\rightarrow\infty$, our model is exactly solvable and thus serves as a benchmark for our numerical method. From our data, we find that for $U^\prime/U>1$ a quantum phase transition between an (anti)ferromagnetic phase and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase occurs at a finite $\theta$, while for $U^\prime/U<1$ a transition between a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase happens at $\theta=0$. A refined ground-state phase diagram is then deduced from their low-temperature behaviors. Our findings provide an alternative way to detect those distinguishable phases experimentally.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study the quantum phase transition in the mixed-spin Heisenberg model with the single-ion anisotropy on a bipartite lattice. We prove rigorously that, when the single-ion anisotropy energy D is positive, the model has a unique ground state with the total spin-z component S-z=0. On the other hand, when the single-ion anisotropy energy is negative and favors the longitudinal spin direction, the global ground state of the system becomes doubly degenerate. Therefore, D=0 is the bifurcation point for the global ground state of the system. Furthermore, we show also that, in the latter case, the global ground state of the mixed-spin Heisenberg chain has the ferrimagnetic long-range order. Our conclusions confirm and generalize the previous results derived by numerical calculations on small size samples.

Abstract:We study quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chains with dilute random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds with the modified spin-wave theory. By describing thermal excitations in the language of spin waves, we observe a low-temperature Curie susceptibility due to the formation of large spin clusters first predicted by the real-space renormalization-group approach, as well as a crossover to a pure ferromagnetic spin-chain behavior at intermediate and high temperatures. We compare our results of the modified spin-wave theory to quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
A Quantum Fidelity Study of the Anisotropic Next-Nearest-Neighbour Triangular Lattice Heisenberg Model

Abstract:Ground- and excited-state quantum fidelities in combination with generalized quantum fidelity susceptibilites, obtained from exact diagonalizations, are used to explore the phase diagram of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbour triangular Heisenberg model. Specifically, the $J'-J_2$ plane of this model, which connects the $J_1-J_2$ chain and the anisotropic triangular lattice Heisenberg model, is explored using these quantities. Through the use of a quantum fidelity associated with the first excited-state, in addition to the conventional ground-state fidelity, the BKT-type transition and Majumdar-Ghosh point of the $J_1-J_2$ chain ($J'=0$) are found to extend into the $J'-J_2$ plane and connect with points on the $J_2=0$ axis thereby forming bounded regions in the phase diagram. These bounded regions are then explored through the generalized quantum fidelity susceptibilities $\chi_{\rho}$, $\chi_{120^{\circ}}$, $\chi_D$ and $\chi_{CAF}$ which are associated with the spin stiffness, $120^{\circ}$ spiral order parameter, dimer order parameter and collinear antiferromagnetic order parameter respectively. These quantities are believed to be extremely sensitive to the underlying phase and are thus well suited for finite-size studies. Analysis of the fidelity susceptibilities suggests that the $J',J_2 \ll J$ phase of the anisotropic triangular model is either a collinear antiferromagnet or possibly a gapless disordered phase that is directly connected to the Luttinger phase of the $J_1-J_2$ chain. Furthermore, the outer region is dominated by incommensurate spiral physics as well as dimer order.

Ground-State Phases of Anisotropic Mixed Diamond Chains with Spins 1 and 1/2

Abstract:The ground-state phases of anisotropic mixed diamond chains with spins 1 and 1/2 are investigated. Both single-site and exchange anisotropies are considered. We find the phases consisting of an array of uncorrelated spin-1 clusters separated by singlet dimers. Except in the simplest case where the cluster consists of a single $S=1$ spin, this type of ground state breaks the translational symmetry spontaneously. Although the mechanism leading to this type of ground state is the same as that in the isotropic case, it is nonmagnetic or paramagnetic depending on the competition between two types of anisotropy. We also find the Néel, period-doubled Néel, Haldane, and large-$D$ phases, where the ground state is a single spin cluster of infinite size equivalent to the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with alternating anisotropies. The ground-state phase diagrams are determined for typical sets of parameters by numerical analysis. In various limiting cases, the ground-state phase diagrams are determined analytically. The low-temperature behaviors of magnetic susceptibility and entropy are investigated to distinguish each phase by observable quantities. The relationship of the present model with the anisotropic rung-alternating ladder with spin-1/2 is also discussed.

Ground state of the S = 1/2 Heisenberg spin chain with random ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings

Abstract:We study the Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain with random ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, using quantum Monte Carlo simulations at ultra-low temperatures, converging to the ground state. Finite-size scaling of correlation functions and excitation gaps demonstrate an exotic critical state in qualitative agreement with previous strong-disorder renormalization group calculations, but with scaling exponents depending on the coupling distribution. We find dual scaling regimes of the transverse correlations versus the distance, with an $L$ independent form $C(r)=r^{-\mu}$ for $r \ll L$ and $C(r,L)=L^{-\eta}f(r/L)$ for $r/L > 0$, where $\mu > \eta$ and the scaling function is delivered by our analysis. These results are at variance with previous spin-wave and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, thus highlighting the power of unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions on the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ kagome-Heisenberg model using the pseudo-fermion functional-renormalization-group (PFFRG) technique. In order to treat the off-diagonal nature of DM interactions, we develop an extended PFFRG scheme. We benchmark this approach in parameter regimes that have previously been studied with other methods and find good agreement of the magnetic phase diagram. Particularly, finite DM interactions are found to stabilize all types of non-collinear magnetic orders of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model ($\mathbf{q}=0$, $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$, and cuboc orders) and shrink the extents of magnetically disordered phases. We discuss our results in the light of the mineral {\it herbertsmithite} which has been experimentally predicted to host a quantum spin liquid at low temperatures. Our PFFRG data indicates that this material lies in close proximity to a quantum critical point. In parts of the experimentally relevant parameter regime for {\it herbertsmithite}, the spin-correlation profile is found to be in good qualitative agreement with recent inelastic-neutron-scattering data.

Abstract:<p>The fidelity susceptibility and trace distance in the valence‐bond‐solid (VBS) transition of a quantum mixed spin chain is investigated, which consists of unit cells arrayed as 1/2‐1/2‐1‐1 with alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange couplings, by using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method in the matrix product state (MPS) form. It is observed that the fidelity susceptibility and the first derivative of the trace distance display explicit divergence near the quantum critical point. The information about the quantum criticality, such as the quantum critical point and correlation length critical exponent, is extracted from the finite size scaling behaviors. The obtained quantum critical point is more accurate than previous work, and the existence of the scaling function of the trace distance near the critical point is observed numerically for the first time. In addition, it is also found that the trace distance between two sites can supplement the VBS picture for describing the change of the ground state as the control parameter is varied through the quantum critical point.</p>

The QES potential and the wave functions of the two energy levels are expressed by some generating function the properties of which determine the state numbers of these levels. Abstract:We study the dynamical spin excitations of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function. Using the transverse dynamic spin structure factor, we observe the quantum phase transition with a critical point between the topological Haldane gapped phase and the trivial phase. At the quantum critical point, we find a broad continuum characterized by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid similar to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We further identify that the elementary excitations are fractionalized spinons.

Abstract:The Kitaev-type spin chains have been demonstrated to be fertile playgrounds in which exotic phases and unconventional phase transitions are ready to appear. In this work, we use the density-matrix renormalization group method to study the quantum phase diagram of a spin-1 Kitaev chain with a tunable negative single-ion anisotropy (SIA). When the strength of the SIA is small, the ground state is revealed to be a spin-nematic phase which escapes conventional magnetic order but is characterized by a finite spin-nematic correlation because of the breaking spin-rotational symmetry. As the SIA increases, the spin-nematic phase is taken over by either a dimerized phase or an antiferromagnetic phase through an Ising-type phase transition, depending on the direction of the easy axis. For large enough SIA, the dimerized phase and the antiferromagnetic phase undergo a ``Landau-forbidden" continuous phase transition, suggesting new platform of deconfined quantum critical point in spin-1 Kitaev chain.

Abstract:Ground state properties, dispersion relations and scaling behaviour of spin gap of a bond alternating spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain have been studied where the exchange interactions on alternate bonds are ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) in two separate cases. The resulting models separately represent nearest neighbour (NN) AFM-AFM and AFM-FM bond alternating chains. Ground state energy has been estimated analytically by using both bond operator and Jordan-Wigner representations and numerically by using exact diagonalization. Dispersion relations, spin gap and several ground state orders have been obtained. Dimer order and string orders are found to coexist in the ground state. Spin gap is found to develop as soon as the non-uniformity in alternating bond strength is introduced in the AFM-AFM chain which further remains non-zero for the AFM-FM chain. This spin gap along with the string orders attribute to the Haldane phase. The Haldane phase is found to exist in most of the anisotropic region similar to the isotropic point.

Abstract:The mixed spin-1 and spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric spin-1 sites and square-plaquette spin-1/2 sites is investigated using variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The investigated model has in a magnetic field an extraordinarily rich ground-state phase diagram, which includes the uniform and cluster-based Haldane phases, two ferrimagnetic phases of Lieb-Mattis type, two quantum spin liquids and two bound magnon crystals in addition to the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. The lowest-energy eigenstates in a highly-frustrated parameter region belong to flat bands and hence, low-temperature thermodynamics above the bound magnon-crystal ground states can be satisfactorily described within the localized-magnon approach. The variational method provides an exact evidence for the magnon-crystal phase with a character of the monomer-tetramer ground state at zero field, while another magnon-crystal phase with a single bound magnon at each square plaquette is found in a high-field region. A diversity of quantum ground states gives rise to manifold zero-temperature magnetization curves, which may involve up to four wide intermediate plateaus at zero, one-sixth, one-third and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization, two quantum spin-liquid regions and two tiny plateaus at one-ninth and one-twelfth of the saturation magnetization corresponding to the fragmentized cluster-based Haldane phases.

Abstract:The ground-state properties of the spin-(1/2, 1) mixed-spin XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy (D) are investigated by the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method. A ground-state phase diagram including three phases, i.e., a fully polarized phase, an XY phase and a ferrimagnetic phase, is obtained. The ferrimagnetic phase is found to extend to the regions with (Δ > 1, D > 0) and (Δ < 1, D < 0), where Δ denotes the coupling anisotropy between the localized spins. By the discontinuous behavior of bipartite entanglement, quantum phase transitions (QPTs) between the XY phase and the other two phases are verified to be of the first-order. Furthermore, two constant spontaneous magnetization values (Mz = 3/2 and 1/2) are observed in the fully polarized and the ferrimagnetic phases, respectively. In both cases of Δ → +∞ and D → -∞, the ground state tends to the Ising limit. In addition, both the long-range ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are found to coexist in the whole ferrimagnetic phase.
