Abstract:In this paper we study perturbations of complex unicritical polynomials satisfying the Collet-Eckmann condition. We show that Collet-Eckmann parameters are Lebesgue density points of the complement of the Mandelbrot set (i.e. the connectedness locus).

Abstract:In this paper we study perturbations of rational Collet–Eckmann maps for which the Julia set is the whole sphere, and for which the critical set is allowed to be slowly recurrent. Generically, if each critical point is simple, we show that each such Collet–Eckmann map is a Lebesgue point of Collet–Eckmann maps in the space of rational maps of the same degree . The same result holds in each subspace, where we fix the multiplicities of the critical points.

Abstract:We solve the longstanding conjecture by Milnor (1993) concerning the connectedness locus $M_1$ of the family of quadratic rational maps tangent to the identity at $\infty$. We prove that this locus in homeomorphic to the Mandelbrot set $M$ and that the homeomorphism is unique, provided it identifies maps that are "hybridly" conjugate on their filled-in Julia set. Moreover this homeomorphism from $M$ to $M_1$ is nowhere Hölder on the boundary and so can not have even locally a quasi-conformal extension to complements.

Abstract:We study the parameter space of unicritical polynomials f(c) : z bar right arrow z(d) + c. For complex parameters, we prove that for Lebesgue almost every c, the map f(c) is either hyperbolic or infinitely renormalizable. For real parameters, we prove that for Lebesgue almost every c, the map f(c) is either hyperbolic, or Collet-Eckmann, or infinitely renormalizable. These results are based on controlling the spacing between consecutive elements in the "principal nest" of parapuzzle pieces.

Abstract:We consider quasisymmetric reparametrizations of the parameter space of the quadratic family. We prove that the set of quadratic maps which are either regular or Collet-Eckmann with polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit has full Lebesgue measure. (The intent of this work is just to be a rigorous reference for the companion preprint Statistical properties of unimodal maps: smooth families with negative Schwarzian derivative. It is based on the LaTeX file of the paper Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family. The proofs are very similar and in many places differ just by change of constants.)

Abstract:For the family of complex rational functions of the form $R_{n,c,a}(z) = z^n + \dfrac{a}{z^n}+c$, known as ``Generalized McMullen maps'', for $a\neq 0$ and $n \geq 3$ fixed, we study the boundedness locus in some one-dimensional slices of the $(a,c)$-parameter space, by fixing a parameter or imposing a relation. First, if we fix $c$ with $|c|\geq 6$ while allowing $a$ to vary, assuming a modest lower bound on $n$ in terms of $|c|$, we establish the location in the $a$-plane of $n$ ``baby" Mandelbrot sets, that is, homeomorphic copies of the original Mandelbrot set. We use polynomial-like maps, introduced by Douady and Hubbard and applied for the subfamily $R_{n,a,0}$ by Devaney. Second, for slices in which $c=ta$, we again observe what look like baby Mandelbrot sets within these slices, and begin the study of this subfamily by establishing a neighborhood containing the boundedness locus.

Abstract:In this paper we prove existence of matings between a large class of renormalizable cubic polynomials with one fixed critical point and another cubic polynomial having two fixed critical points. The resulting mating is a Newton map. Our result is the first part towards a conjecture by Tan Lei, stating that all (cubic) Newton maps can be described as matings or captures.

Abstract:Determining the limiting behaviour of the Jacobian as the underlying curve degenerates has been the subject of much interest. For nodal singularities, there are beautiful constructions of Caporaso as well as Pandharipande of compactified universal Jacobians over the moduli space of stable curves. Alexeev later obtained a canonical such compactification by extending the Torelli map out of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. In contrast, Alexeev and Brunyate proved that the Torelli map does not extend over the cuspidal locus in Schubert's alternative compactification of pseudostable curves.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of the family of rational maps with two parameters $$\begin{eqnarray}f_{a,b}(z)=z^{n}+\frac{a^{2}}{z^{n}-b}+\frac{a^{2}}{b},\end{eqnarray}$$ where $n\geq 2$ and $a,b\in \mathbb{C}^{\ast }$. We give a characterization of the topological properties of the Julia set and the Fatou set of $f_{a,b}$ according to the dynamical behavior of the orbits of the free critical points.
On CM Points Away from the Torelli Locus

Abstract:In this paper we prove that certain points in the Hecke orbit of a CM point in the Siegel modular variety do not lie in the open Torelli locus under suitable conditions on the field of definition and the CM factors that arise in the corresponding CM abelian variety. The proof is a combination of properties of stable Faltings height and known cases of the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and is motivated by an analogue over function fields proved by Kukulies. We also discuss the relation of our result with questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and refine a previous result showing that certain Shimura subvarieties of unitary type in the Siegel modular variety only meet the open Torelli locus in dimension zero.
Connected McMullen-like Julia sets in a Chebyshev-Halley Family

Abstract:In this paper we study a one parameter family of rational maps obtained by applying the Chebyshev-Halley root finding algorithms. We show that the dynamics near parameters where the family presents some degeneracy might be understood from the point of view of singular perturbations. More precisely, we relate the dynamics of those maps with the one of the McMullen family $M_{\lambda}(z)=z^4 + \lambda /z^2$, using quasi-conformal surgery.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamical behavior of the family of complex rational maps which is given byfλ(z)=zn(z2n−λn+1)z2n−λ3n−1, where n≥2 and λ∈C⁎−{λ:λ2n−2=1}. This family of rational maps can be seen as a perturbation of the unicritical polynomial z↦zn if λ is small. We prove that the Julia set J(fλ) of fλ is either a quasicircle, a Cantor set of circles, a Sierpiński carpet or a degenerated Sierpiński carpet provided one of the free critical points of fλ is escaping to the origin or to the infinity. In particular, we prove that there exists suitable λ such that the Julia set J(fλ) is a Cantor set of circles, but fλ is not topologically conjugate to any McMullen map on their corresponding Julia sets.

Abstract:We provide a strengthened version of the famous Jakobson's theorem. Consider an interval map f satisfying a summability condition. For a generic one-parameter family f(t) of maps with f(0) = f, we prove that t = 0 is a Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which ft satisfies both the Collet-Eckmann condition and a strong polynomial recurrence condition.

Abstract:We relate the Brasselet number of a complex analytic function-germ defined on a complex analytic set to the critical points of its real part on the regular locus of the link. Similarly we give a new characterization of the Euler obstruction in terms of the critical points on the regular part of the link of the projection on a generic real line. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the relation between the Euler obstruction and the Gauss–Bonnet measure, conjectured by Fu.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of the geometry of Hilbert $p$-adic eigenvarieties at parallel weight one intersection points of their cuspidal and Eisenstein loci. The Galois theoretic approach presents genuine difficulties due to the lack of good deformation theory for pseudo-characters irregular at $p$ and reflects the rich local geometry at such points. We believe that our geometric results lead to deeper insight into the arithmetic of Hilbert automorphic forms and we produce several applications in Iwasawa theory to support that.

Abstract:In our previous works we proved a finiteness property of the radii of convergence functions associated with a vector bundle with connection on $p$-adic analytic curves. We showed that the radii are locally constant functions outside a locally finite graph in the curve, called controlling graph. In this paper we refine that finiteness results by giving a bound on the size of the controlling graph in terms of the geometry of the curve and the rank of the module. This is based on super-harmonicity properties of radii of convergence and partial heights of the Newton polygon. Under suitable assumptions, we relate the size of the controlling graph associated with the total height of the convergence Newton polygon to the Euler characteristic in the sense of de Rham cohomology.

Abstract:This paper studies the behavior under iteration of the maps T_{ab}(x,y) = (F_{ab}(x)- y, x) of the plane R^2, in which F_{ab}(x)= ax if x>0 and bx if x<0. These maps are area-preserving homeomorphisms of the plane that map rays from the origin into rays from the origin. Orbits of the map correspond to solutions of the nonlinear difference equation x_{n+2}= 1/2(a-b)|x_{n+1}| + 1/2(a+b)x_{n+1} - x_n. This difference equation can be written in an eigenvalue form for a nonlinear difference operator of Schrodinger type, in which \mu= 1/2(a-b) is viewed as fixed and the energy E=2- 1/2(a+b). The paper studies the set of parameter values where T_{ab} has at least one nonzero bounded orbit, which corresponds to an l_{\infty} eigenfunction of the difference operator. It shows that the for transcendental \mu the set of allowed energy values E for which there is a bounded orbit is a Cantor set. Numerical simulations suggest that this Cantor set have positive one-dimensional measure for all real values of \mu.

Compactifications of the Eisenstein ancestral Deligne-Mostow variety

Abstract:All arithmetic non-compact ball quotients by Deligne-Mostow's unitary monodromy group arise as sub-ball quotients of either of two spaces called ancestral cases, corresponding to Gaussian or Eisenstein Hermitian forms respectively. In our previous paper, we investigated the compactifications of the Gaussian Deligne-Mostow variety. Here we work on the remaining case, namely the ring of Eisenstein integers, which is related to the moduli space of unordered 12 points on $\mathbb P^1$. In particular, we show that Kirwan's partial resolution of the moduli space is not a semi-toroidal compactification and Deligne-Mostow's period map does not lift to the unique toroidal compactification. We give two interpretations of these phenomena in terms of the log minimal model program and automorphic forms. As an application, we prove that the above two compactifications are not (stacky) derived equivalent, as the $DK$-conjecture predicts. Furthermore, we construct an automorphic form on the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, which is isogenous to the Eisenstein Deligne-Mostow variety, giving another intrinsic proof, independent of lattice embeddings, of a result by Casalaina-Martin, Jensen and Laza.

Abstract:Let k be an odd positive integer, L a lattice on a regular positive definite k -dimensional quadratic space over ℚ , N_L the level of L , and ℳ(L) be the linear space of θ -series attached to the distinct classes in the genus of L . We prove that, for an odd prime p|N_L , if L_p=L_p,1 L_p,2 , where L_p,1 is unimodular, L_p,2 is ( p )-modular, and ℚ_pL_p,2 is anisotropic, then ℳ(L;p):= ℳ(L) +T_p^2. ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_p^2 . If L_2 is isometric to ( [ 0 1/2; 1/2 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ε⟩ or ( [ 0 1/2; 1/2 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ 2ε⟩ or ( [ 0 1; 1 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ε⟩ with ε∈ℤ_2^× and κ :=k-1/2 , then ℳ(L;2):=T_2^2.ℳ(L)+T_2^2^2. ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_2^2 . Furthermore, we determine some invariant subspaces of the cusp forms for the Hecke operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the following family of rational maps f(lambda) (z) = z(2n) - 3(n+1) z(n) (z(2n) - lambda(n-1)) with one parameter lambda is an element of C* -{lambda:lambda(2n+2) =1}, where n >= 2. This family of rational maps is viewed as a singular perturbation of the bi- critical map P-n (z) = z(-n) if lambda not equal 0 is small. It is proved that the Julia set J (f(lambda)) is either a quasicircle, a Cantor set of circles, a Sierpinski carpet or a degenerate Sierpinski carpet provided the free critical orbits of f(lambda) are attracted by the super-attracting cycle 0 <-> 1. Furthermore, we prove that there exists suitable lambda such that J (f(lambda)) is a Cantor set of circles but the dynamics of f(lambda) on J (f(lambda)) is not topologically conjugate to that of any known rational maps with only one or two free critical orbits (including McMullen maps and the generalized McMullen maps). The connectivity of J (f(lambda)) is also proved if the free critical orbits are not attracted by the cycle 0 $ 1. Finally we give an estimate of the Hausdor ff dimension of the Julia set of f(lambda) in some special cases.
