Abstract:We present manifestly reparametrization invariant action for theory of gravity with dynamical determinant of metric. We show that it is similar to a reparametrization invariant action for unimodular gravity. We determine canonical form of the action and study structure of constraints.

In these theories, just as in their analogues in the metric formulation, the cosmological constant does not take a prescribed value but is an integration constant whose value can differ between different (classical) solutions. We discuss some subtleties when identifying Lorentzian solutions in the generally complex theory, and show how these theories can be reduced to a ``pure connection'' form similar to Krasnov's pure connection formalism for general relativity.

On the KG-constrained Bekenstein's disformal transformation of the Einstein-Hilbert action

Abstract:Motivated by an inclination for symmetry and possible extension of the General Theory of Relativity within the framework of Scalar Theory, we investigate the Bekenstein's disformal transformation of the Einstein-Hilbert action. Owing to the complicated combinations of second order metric derivatives encoded in the Ricci scalar of the action, such a transformation yields an unwieldy expression. To `tame' the transformed action, we exploit the conformal-disformal (KG) constraint previously discovered in the study of the invariance of the massless Klein-Gordon equation under disformal transformation. The result upon its application is a surprisingly much more concise and simple action in four spacetime dimensions containing three out of four sub-Lagrangians found in the Horndeski action, and three beyond-Horndeski terms. The latter group of terms may be attributed to the kinetic dependence of the conformal and disformal factors in the Bekenstein's disformal transformation. This is consistent with a related study on the special disformal transformation of the Einstein-Hilbert action where no such beyond-Horndeski terms are found to exist. Going down to three dimensions, we find a relatively simpler resulting action but the signature of three three `extraneous' terms remains. Remarkably, we find in two dimensions the Einstein-Hilbert action to be invariant under the KG-constrained Bekenstein's disformal transformation.

Einstein Gravity from Einstein Action: Counterterms and Covariance

Abstract:The field equations of general relativity can be derived from the Einstein action, which is quadratic in connection coefficients, rather than the standard action involving the Gibbons-Hawking-York term and counterterm. We show that it is possible to construct a new counterterm directly for the Einstein action, which removes divergences and naturally introduces a flat reference spacetime. The total action is then covariant under simultaneous transformation of both the spacetime and reference tetrads, and argue that this is analogous to the Gibbons-Hawking action. We then explore different perspectives arising naturally from different uses of the reference tetrad, and explore implications of viewing gravity as fundamentally described in terms of non-covariant connection coefficients.

Abstract:The Einstein-Hilbert action has a bulk term and a surface term (which arises from integrating a four divergence). I show that one can obtain Einstein's equations from the surface term alone. This leads to: (i) a novel, completely self contained, perspective on gravity and (ii) a concrete mathematical framework in which the description of spacetime dynamics by Einstein's equations is similar to the description of a continuum solid in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:We perform a Hamiltonian analysis of unimodular gravity in its first-order formulation, specifically a modification of the Holst action. In order to simplify the analysis, prior studies on this theory have introduced (for several reasons) additional elements, such as parametrization, complex fields, or considering the Barbero–Immirzi parameter as imaginary. We show that, by using a geometric implementation of the Dirac algorithm, a comprehensive analysis of the theory can be conducted without relying on these additional ingredients. The resulting theory reproduces the behavior of metric unimodular gravity.

Abstract:Area metrics are an intriguing generalization of length metrics which the generalization in several quantum-gravity approaches. We describe the space of diffeomorphism-invariant area-metric actions quadratic in fluctuations and derivatives. A general theory is found to be specified by four parameters, two of which are mass parameters for the nonlength degrees of freedom. We find that a two-parameter subclass of theories exhibits an additional "shift" symmetry of the kinetic term and leads to a ghost-free graviton propagator for the effective theory obtained after integrating out the nonlength degrees of freedom. One of the two parameters determines the strength of parity violations; the other defines a mass parameter for the nonlength degrees of freedom. The same type of action has been found to appear from modified Plebanski theory and in the continuum limit of (effective) spin foams. In this case the two parameters can be identified with the Barbero-Immirzi parameter and a combination of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter and the Planck mass, respectively. Moreover, we find that area-metric actions in Lorentzian (but not in Euclidean) signature feature wrong-sign kinetic and mass terms for the nonlength degrees of freedom. Nevertheless, despite a coupling of these degrees of freedom to the length metric, the linearized dynamics turns out to be stable for the above subclass of actions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.124035 © 2024 American Physical Society

On the KG-constrained general disformal transformation of the Einstein-Hilbert action

Abstract:Although with great successes in explaining phenomena and natural behaviour involving the Universe or a part thereof, the General Theory of Relativity is far from a complete theory. Focusing on its extension within the framework of scalar tensor theory, we investigate the transformation of the Einstein-Hilbert action under the general disformal transformation coupled with a set of triple KG constraints. The idea is that the general disformal transformation leads to an extremely complicated action necessitating a set of constraints to tame the resulting form. Motivated by previous studies on the invertibility and invariance of the massless Klein-Gordon equation under the general disformal transformation, we identify three constraints that significantly simplifies the transformed Einstein-Hilbert action. In four spacetime dimensions, we find that the transformed action is a sum of the original action and a disformal contribution involving a six-term Lagrangian that includes the Ricci tensor coupled to a sum of derivatives of scalar fields and kinetic terms. In three spacetime dimensions, the disformal contribution becomes a five-term Lagrangian. Lastly, in two spacetime dimensions, the Einstein-Hilbert action is invariant under the constrained disformal transformation.

Abstract:Trace-free Einstein gravity is a theory of gravity that is an alternative to general relativity, wherein the cosmological constant arises as an integration constant. However, there are no fully diffeomorphism-invariant action principles available that lead to the equations of motion of this theory. Unimodular gravity comes close to this idea, but it relies on action principles that are invariant only under volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. We present a real $BF$-type action principle for trace-free Einstein gravity that is fully diffeomorphism-invariant and does not require any unimodular condition or nondynamical fields. We generalize this action principle by giving another one involving a free parameter.

Abstract:It is well known that the Einstein-Hilbert action in two dimensions is topological and yields an identically vanishing Einstein tensor. Consequently one is faced with difficulties when formulating a non-trivial gravity model. We present a new, intrinsically two-dimensional, approach to this problem based on the Einstein action. This yields a well defined variational approach which results in new field equations that break diffeomorphism invariance. Our proposed approach does not require the introduction of additional scalar fields, nor the use of conformal transformations. However, we can show how including conformal counter terms leads to equivalent results. In doing so, we can provide an explanation for why previous approaches worked. Solutions to the field equations are briefly discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the generic part of the gauge theory of gravity is derived, based merely on the action principle and on the general principle of relativity. We apply the canonical transformation framework to formulate geometrodynamics as a gauge theory. The starting point of our paper is constituted by the general De~Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian of a system of scalar and vector fields, which is supposed to be form-invariant under (global) Lorentz transformations. Following the reasoning of gauge theories, the corresponding locally form-invariant system is worked out by means of canonical transformations. The canonical transformation approach ensures by construction that the form of the action functional is maintained. We thus encounter amended Hamiltonian systems which are form-invariant under arbitrary spacetime transformations. This amended system complies with the general principle of relativity and describes both, the dynamics of the given physical system's fields and their coupling to those quantities which describe the dynamics of the spacetime geometry. In this way, it is unambiguously determined how spin-0 and spin-1 fields couple to the dynamics of spacetime. A term that describes the dynamics of the free gauge fields must finally be added to the amended Hamiltonian, as common to all gauge theories, to allow for a dynamic spacetime geometry. The choice of this "dynamics Hamiltonian" is outside of the scope of gauge theory as presented in this paper. It accounts for the remaining indefiniteness of any gauge theory of gravity and must be chosen "by hand" on the basis of physical reasoning. The final Hamiltonian of the gauge theory of gravity is shown to be at least quadratic in the conjugate momenta of the gauge fields -- this is beyond the Einstein-Hilbert theory of General Relativity.

Abstract:In this thesis, we investigate the method of conformal renormalization applied to theories with degrees of freedom beyond the metric ones. Specifically, we examine this method in the presence of a scalar field. To do this, as part of a review, we revisit the action principle of General Relativity and Einstein's equations, in addition to re-examining the conditions for this theory to have a well-defined variational principle when Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. We then explore various methods for calculating conserved charges in asymptotically flat spaces. In asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces, we study two renormalization schemes that are relevant to this work. To motivate the method used here, we observe that Conformal Gravity is finite for spaces that are asymptotically anti-de Sitter, as demonstrated in [Grumiller, 2014]. This guiding principle gives us a clue as to how conformal symmetry may be related to renormalization in spacetimes with such asymptotics. The basis of this construction is the extension of a covariant tensor under Weyl rescalings composed of the metric and the scalar field as proposed in [Oliva and Ray, 2011]. This extension ensures that the conformal weight of this tensor is equal to that of the Weyl tensor. We extend this realization by considering tensor-scalar theories with conformal symmetry, coupled with the Einstein-AdS action written in the MacDowell-Mansouri form. Despite the fact that the Einstein-AdS sector breaks conformal symmetry, we show that the entire theory can still be renormalized if the scalar field has an appropriate decay when considering asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions. Finally, we study black hole-type solutions, calculating their Hawking temperature and the Euclidean on-shell action, explicitly demonstrating that the latter is finite for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces.

Furthermore, a manifestly causal and covariant formulation of quantum field theory is presented which surpasses the usual Hamiltonian and path integral construction. We also give the path integral partition function technique to normalize setups of quantum corrected actions down to Einstein systems. Briefly, Einstein effective action and Stravinski effective action are come to the mass dependence with the appropriate cosmological constant.

Dynamical 4-D Gauss-Bonnet action from matter-graviton interaction at one-loop

Abstract:The occurrence of singularities at the centers of black holes suggests that general relativity (GR), although a highly successful model of gravity and cosmology, is inapplicable. This is due to the breakdown of the equivalence principle. Gauss-Bonnet (GB) action is a simplest extension of GR as it possess second-order equations of motion and is devoid of ghosts. However, in 4-D, the GB action is topological. Recently, Glavan and Lin proposed a mathematical framework that transforms the 4-D GB gravity theory into a non-topological one. However, it has been argued that without a canonical way to choose 4-D from the higher-dimensional space, such a GB gravity is not well-defined in 4-D. The current work takes a step in addressing this issue by demonstrating that the rescaling of the GB coupling $\alpha \rightarrow \alpha/(D - 4)$ arises from the self-energy correction of gravitons in 4-D via \emph{the dimensional regularization}. To keep things transparent, we focus on the linearized theory of gravity coupled with matter fields. By computing the one-loop self-energy correction of gravitons induced by the matter fields, we explicitly provide the origin of the prescription provided by Glavan and Lin. Our work naturally opens a new window to considering 4-D Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity as the most straightforward modification to GR.

Abstract:We present the canonical analysis of different versions of unimodular gravity defined in the Plebański formalism, based on a (generally complex) SO(3) spin connection and set of (self-dual) two-forms. As in the metric formulation of unimodular gravity, one can study either a theory with fixed volume form or work in a parametrised formalism in which the cosmological constant becomes a dynamical field, constrained to be constant by the field equations. In the first case, the Hamiltonian density contains a part which is not constrained to vanish, but rather constrained to be constant, again as in the metric formulation. We also discuss reality conditions and challenges in extracting Lorentzian solutions.
