Abstract:Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, with blood pressure serving as a crucial indicator. Arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveforms provide continuous pressure measurements throughout the cardiac cycle and offer valuable diagnostic insights. Consequently, there is a significant demand for non-invasive and cuff-less methods to measure ABP waveforms continuously. Accurate prediction of ABP waveforms can also improve the estimation of mean blood pressure, an essential cardiovascular health characteristic.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of non - invasive and continuous monitoring of arterial blood pressure waveforms. Specifically, the paper proposes a new physics - informed deep - learning method - BP - DeepONet for non - invasive estimation of arterial blood pressure waveforms. The following are the main problems that the paper attempts to solve: 1. **Non - invasiveness and continuous monitoring**: - Currently, the gold - standard monitoring method for arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveforms is invasive, requiring the implantation of a pressure sensor in the artery. This method is high - risk, expensive, and usually limited to use in intensive care units. - Although non - invasive methods are more popular, existing methods can usually only predict systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), but cannot continuously predict the entire ABP waveform. 2. **Blood pressure waveform prediction at different locations**: - Existing deep - learning methods are mainly trained on radial artery data, so they can only predict the ABP waveform of the radial artery. However, ABP waveforms at different locations are different, and the waveform of the radial artery may not be sufficient to comprehensively reflect the state of the cardiovascular system. - The method proposed in the paper can predict the ABP waveforms at different locations of the artery, thereby providing more comprehensive diagnostic information. 3. **Integration of physical laws**: - To improve the prediction accuracy, the paper introduces physical information, namely the Navier - Stokes equation and Windkessel boundary conditions. These physical laws can simulate the dynamic characteristics of blood flow and generate natural physical reflection waves. - By integrating physical laws into the model, it can be ensured that the predicted ABP waveform is not only accurate but also conforms to physical characteristics, such as the pulse pressure amplification effect. 4. **Adaptive estimation of hyperparameters**: - Many hyperparameters in hemodynamics (such as the elastic coefficient of the blood vessel wall, blood density, etc.) vary from person to person. Traditional deep - learning methods usually assume that these parameters are constants, which is unrealistic in practical applications. - The paper proposes a meta - learning method, enabling the neural network to automatically estimate these hyperparameters during the training process, thereby improving the generalization ability and prediction accuracy of the model. In summary, the main goal of this paper is to develop a new physics - informed deep - learning method that can non - invasively and continuously predict blood pressure waveforms at different locations of the artery and can adaptively estimate individual - related hyperparameters, thereby providing more accurate and comprehensive cardiovascular health monitoring.
