Abstract:We prove that if $p \geq n^{-(q-6)/2}$, then asymptotically almost surely the binomial random $q$-uniform hypergraph $G^{(q)}(n,p)$ contains an $(n,q,2)$-Steiner system, provided $n$ satisfies the necessary divisibility conditions.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a random $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph where every $k$-tuple belongs to $H$ independently with probability $p$. We show that for some $\varepsilon_k > 0$, if $p \geq n^{-\varepsilon_k}$, then asymptotically almost surely $H$ contains an $\left( n , k , k - 1 \right)$-Steiner System. Our main tool is Keevash's method of Randomized Algebraic Constructions.

Abstract:We establish an upper bound on the minimum codegree necessary for the existence of spanning, fractional Steiner triple systems in $3$-uniform hypergraphs. This improves upon a result by Lee in 2023. In particular, together with results from Lee's paper, our results imply that if $n$ is sufficiently large and satisfies some necessary divisibility conditions, then a $3$-uniform, $n$-vertex hypergraph $H$ contains a Steiner triple system if every pair of vertices forms an edge in $H$ with at least $0.8579n$ other vertices.

Abstract:We prove several structural properties of Steiner triple systems (STS) of order 3w+3 that include one or more transversal subdesigns TD(3,w). Using an exhaustive search, we find that there are 2004720 isomorphism classes of STS(21) including a subdesign TD(3,6), or, equivalently, a 6-by-6 latin square.

Abstract:In a recent work, Jungnickel, Magliveras, Tonchev, and Wassermann derived an overexponential lower bound on the number of nonisomorphic resolvable Steiner triple systems (STS) of order $v$, where $v=3^k$, and $3$-rank $v-k$. We develop an approach to generalize this bound and estimate the number of isomorphism classes of STS$(v)$ of rank $v-k-1$ for an arbitrary $v$ of form $3^kT$.

Abstract:In 1973, Erdős asked whether there are <math>n</math>‐vertex partial Steiner triple systems with arbitrary high girth and quadratically many triples. (Here girth is defined as the smallest integer <math>g⩾4</math> for which some <math>g</math>‐element vertex‐set contains at least <math>g−2</math> triples.)We answer this question, by showing existence of approximate Steiner triple systems with arbitrary high girth. More concretely, for any fixed <math>ℓ⩾4</math>, we show that a natural constrained random process typically produces a partial Steiner triple system with <math>(1/6−o(1))n2</math> triples and girth larger than <math>ℓ</math>. The process iteratively adds random triples subject to the constraint that the girth remains larger than <math>ℓ</math>. Our result is best possible up to the <math>o(1)</math>‐term, which is a negative power of <math>n</math>.

Abstract:A famous theorem of Kirkman says that there exists a Steiner triple system of order n if and only if n ≡ 1,3 mod 6. In 1973, Erdős conjectured that one can find so-called 'sparse' Steiner triple systems. Roughly speaking, the aim is to have at most j−3 triples on every set of j points, which would be best possible. (Triple systems with this sparseness property are also referred to as having high girth.) We prove this conjecture asymptotically by analysing a natural generalization of the triangle removal process. Our result also solves a problem posed by Lefmann, Phelps and Rödl as well as Ellis and Linial in a strong form, and answers a question of Krivelevich, Kwan, Loh and Sudakov. Moreover, we pose a conjecture which would generalize the Erdős conjecture to Steiner systems with arbitrary parameters and provide some evidence for this.

Abstract:The concept of Schreier extensions of loops was introduced in the general case in [11] and, more recently, it has been explored in the context of Steiner loops in [6]. In the latter case, it gives a powerful method for constructing Steiner triple systems containing Veblen points. Counting all Steiner triple systems of order v is an open problem for v>21. In this paper, we investigate the number of Steiner triple systems of order 19, 27 and 31 containing Veblen points and we present some examples.

Abstract:Let $n$ be a positive integer and $q$ a prime power. Abstract:The generalized Ramsey number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that every $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. Erdős and Gyárfás showed that $f(n, p, q)$ grows linearly in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{lin}}(p):=\binom p2-p+3$. Similarly they showed that $f(n, p, q)$ is quadratic in $n$ when $p$ is fixed and $q=q_{\text{quad}}(p):=\binom p2-\frac p2+2$. In this note we improve on the known estimates for $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ and $f(n, p, q_{\text{quad}})$. Our proofs involve establishing a significant strengthening of a previously known connection between $f(n, p, q)$ and another extremal problem first studied by Brown, Erdős and Sós, as well as building on some recent progress on this extremal problem by Delcourt and Postle and by Shangguan. Also, our upper bound on $f(n, p, q_{\text{lin}})$ follows from an application of the recent forbidden submatchings method of Delcourt and Postle.

Abstract:We show that for any n divisible by 3, almost all order‐ n Steiner triple systems have a perfect matching (also known as a parallel class or resolution class ). In fact, we prove a general upper bound on the number of perfect matchings in a Steiner triple system and show that almost all Steiner triple systems essentially attain this maximum. We accomplish this via a general theorem comparing a uniformly random Steiner triple system to the outcome of the triangle removal process, which we hope will be useful for other problems. Our methods can also be adapted to other types of designs; for example, we sketch a proof of the theorem that almost all Latin squares have transversals.

Abstract:Let $\Delta,q\geq 3$ be integers. We prove that there exists $\eta\geq 0.002$ such that if $q\geq (2-\eta)\Delta$, then there exists an open set $\mathcal{U}\subset \mathbb{C}$ that contains the interval $[0,1]$ such that for each $w\in \mathcal{U}$ and any graph $G=(V,E)$ of maximum degree at most $\Delta$, the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts model evaluated at $w$ does not vanish. This provides a (modest) improvement on a result of Liu, Sinclair, and Srivastava, and breaks the $q=2\Delta$-barrier for this problem. As a direct consequence we obtain via Barvinok's interpolation method a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to approximate the number of proper $q$-colorings of graphs of maximum degree at most $\Delta$, provided $q\geq (2-\eta)\Delta$.

Abstract:The smallest open case for classifying Steiner triple systems is order 21. A Steiner triple system of order 21, an STS(21), can have subsystems of orders 7 and 9, and it is known that there are 12,661,527,336 isomorphism classes of STS(21)s with sub-STS(9)s. Here, the classification of STS(21)s with subsystems is completed by settling the case of STS(21)s with sub-STS(7)s. There are 116,635,963,205,551 isomorphism classes of such systems. An estimation of the number of isomorphism classes of STS(21)s is given.

Abstract:Given a $t$-$(v, k, \lambda)$ design, $\mathcal{D}=(X,\mathcal{B})$, a zero-sum $n$-flow of $\mathcal{D}$ is a map $f : \mathcal{B}\longrightarrow \{\pm1,\ldots, \pm(n-1)\}$ such that for any point $x\in X$, the sum of $f$ over all blocks incident with $x$ is zero. For a positive integer $k$, we find a zero-sum $k$-flow for an STS$(u w)$ and for an STS$(2v+7)$ for $v\equiv 1~(\mathrm{mod}~4)$, if there are STS$(u)$, STS$(w)$ and STS$(v)$ such that the STS$(u)$ and STS$(v)$ both have a zero-sum $k$-flow. In 2015, it was conjectured that for $v>7$ every STS$(v)$ admits a zero-sum $3$-flow. Here, it is shown that many cyclic STS$(v)$ have a zero-sum $3$-flow. Also, we investigate the existence of zero-sum flows for some Steiner quadruple systems.

Clique Decompositions in Random Graphs via Refined Absorption

Abstract:We prove that if $p\ge n^{-\frac{1}{3}+\beta}$ for some $\beta > 0$, then asymptotically almost surely the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ has a $K_3$-packing containing all but at most $n + O(1)$ edges. Similarly, we prove that if $d \ge n^{\frac{2}{3}+\beta}$ for some $\beta > 0$ and $d$ is even, then asymptotically almost surely the random $d$-regular graph $G_{n,d}$ has a triangle decomposition provided $3 \mid d \cdot n$. We also show that $G(n,p)$ admits a fractional $K_3$-decomposition for such a value of $p$. We prove analogous versions for a $K_q$-packing of $G(n,p)$ with $p\ge n^{-\frac{1}{q+0.5}+\beta}$ and leave of $(q-2)n+O(1)$ edges, for $K_q$-decompositions of $G_{n,d}$ with $(q-1)~|~d$ and $d\ge n^{1-\frac{1}{q+0.5}+\beta}$ provided $q\mid d\cdot n$, and for fractional $K_q$-decompositions.

Steiner systems $S(2,4,2^m)$ supported by a family of extended cyclic codes

Abstract:In [C. Ding, An infinite family of Steiner systems $S(2,4,2^m)$ from cyclic codes, {\em J. Combin. Des.} 26 (2018), no.3, 126--144], Ding constructed a family of Steiner systems $S(2,4,2^m)$ for all $m \equiv 2 \pmod{4}$ from a family of extended cyclic codes. The objective of this paper is to present a family of Steiner systems $S(2,4,2^m)$ for all $m \equiv 0 \pmod{4}$ supported by a family of extended cyclic codes. The main result of this paper complements the previous work of Ding, and the results in the two papers will show that there exists a binary extended cyclic code that can support a Steiner system $S(2,4,2^m)$ for all even $m \geq 4$. This paper also determines the parameters of other $2$-designs supported by this family of extended cyclic codes.

Abstract:In this paper new Steiner systems $S(2,6,121)$, $S(2,6,126)$ are introduced. Also some non-existence results for line lengths $7..9$ are presented. There is no solid proof that presented algorithm is exhaustive or correct, but it produces same results on already known difference families for line lengths $3..5$. Due to calculation-based approach this paper probably won't be published, but will be submitted to arxiv as it contains some new results
