Abstract:Recently, Sawin and Wood (arXiv:math/2210.06279) proved a formula for the distribution of a random abelian group $G$ in terms of its $H$-moments $\mathbb{E} [\#\operatorname{Sur}(G,H)]$. We show that properties of Macdonald polynomials yield an alternate proof.

Abstract:Granville-Soundararajan, Harper-Nikeghbali-Radziwill, and Heap-Lindqvist independently established an asymptotic for the even natural moments of partial sums of random multiplicative functions defined over integers. Building on these works, we study the even natural moments of partial sums of Steinhaus random multiplicative functions defined over function fields. Using a combination of analytic arguments and combinatorial arguments, we obtain asymptotic expressions for all the even natural moments in the large field limit and large degree limit, as well as an exact expression for the fourth moment.

Abstract:When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.
A Geometric Realization of Partially-Symmetric Macdonald Polynomials

Abstract:We formulate a precise conjecture relating integral form partially-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and the parabolic flag Hilbert schemes of Carlsson, Gorsky, and Mellit. This extends, in an explicit fashion, Haiman's realization of modified Macdonald symmetric functions via Hilbert schemes of points in the plane. As evidence for our conjecture we prove that it is compatible with the action of certain elements in Carlsson and Mellit's algebra $\mathbb{A}_{t,q}$, including degree $1$ Pieri formulas.

Abstract:Quantum states are represented by positive semidefinite Hermitian operators with unit trace, known as density matrices. An important subset of quantum states is that of separable states, the complement of which is the subset of \textit{entangled} states. We show that the problem of deciding whether a quantum state is entangled can be seen as a moment problem in real analysis. Only a small number of such moments are accessible experimentally, and so in practice the question of quantum entanglement of a many-body system can be reduced to a truncated moment problem. By considering quantum entanglement of $n$ identical atoms we arrive at the truncated moment problem defined for symmetric measures over a product of $n$ copies of unit balls in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We work with moments up to degree $2$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for belonging to the moment cone, which can be expressed via a linear matrix inequality of size at most $2d+2$, which is independent of $n$. The linear matrix inequalities can be converted into a set of explicit semialgebraic inequalities giving necessary and sufficient conditions for membership in the moment cone, and show that the two conditions approach each other in the limit of large $n$. The inequalities are derived via considering the dual cone of nonnegative polynomials, and its sum-of-squares relaxation. We show that the sum-of-squares relaxation of the dual cone is asymptotically exact, and using symmetry reduction techniques (J. Pure Appl. Algebra 192, no. 1-3, 95, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1205.3102" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.3102">arXiv:1205.3102</a>), it can be written as a small linear matrix inequality of size at most $2d+2$, which is independent of $n$. For the cone of symmetric nonnegative polynomials with the relevant support we also prove an analogue of the half-degree principle for globally nonnegative symmetric polynomials (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 284, no. 1, 174, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 216, no. 4, 850).

Moments of Characteristic Polynomials of Non-Symmetric Random Matrices

Abstract:We study the moments of the absolute characteristic polynomial of the real elliptic ensemble, including the case of the real Ginibre ensemble. We obtain asymptotics for all integral moments inside the real bulk to order 1 + o(1). In particular, for the real Ginibre ensemble, this extends known computations for even moments, and confirms a recent conjecture of Serebryakov and Simm [48] in the integral case. For the elliptic case, this generalizes computations of first two moments by Fyodorov [25] and Fyodorov and Tarnowski [31]. We additionally find uniform asymptotics for the multi-point correlations of the absolute characteristic polynomial. Our proof relies on a relation between expectations for the absolute characteristic polynomial and the real correlation functions, as well as an algebraic method of obtaining asymptotics for the behavior of these correlation functions near the diagonal.

Moments of symmetric square L-functions on GL(3)

Abstract:We give an asymptotic formula with power saving error term for the twisted first moment of symmetric square L-functions on GL(3) in the level aspect. As applications, we obtain non-vanishing results as well as lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for all even moments, supporting the random matrix model for a unitary ensemble. Besides the GL(3) Kuznetsov formula, the ingredients include detailed local computations at ramified places, including root numbers and orthonormalization of oldforms and Eisenstein series.

Abstract:We provide a formula for the generating series of the zeta function $Z(X,t)$ of symmetric powers $Sym^n X$ of varieties over finite fields. This realizes $Z(X,t)$ as an exponentiable motivic measure whose associated Kapranov motivic zeta function takes values in $W(R)$ the big Witt ring of $R=W(\mathbb{Z})$. We apply our formula to compute $Z(Sym^n X,t)$ in a number of explicit cases. Moreover, we show that all $\lambda$-ring motivic measures have zeta functions which are exponentiable. In this setting, the formula for $Z(X,t)$ takes the form of a MacDonald formula for the zeta function.

Abstract:Diaconis and Gamburd computed moments of secular coefficients in the CUE ensemble. We use the characteristic map to give a new combinatorial proof of their result. We also extend their computation to moments of traces of symmetric powers, where the same result holds but in a wider range.

Abstract:We investigate the moment problem and Jacobi matrix associated -- by the operator theoretic framework of the semilocal trace formula -- to each finite set $S$ of places of $\mathbb Q$ containing the archimedean place. The measure is given by the absolute value squared of the product over $S$ of local factors restricted to the critical line. We treat the case $S=\{p,\infty\}$, where a single prime $p$ is adjoined to the archimedean place. We find that all the key ingredients such as the moments, the orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi matrices can be expressed as power series in terms of the parameter $q:=1/p$. We show that the series which appear for the moments themselves are Lambert series. The study of the $q$-series for the coefficients of the Jacobi matrix, and for the associated orthogonal polynomials reveals an intriguing integrality result: all those coefficients belong to the ring $\mathbb Z[\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}]$ obtained by adjoining $1 / \sqrt{2}$ to the ring of integers. The main result of this paper is the conceptual explanation of this integrality property using Catalan numbers.

Abstract:In 1970, Huxley obtained a sharp upper bound for the sixth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point, averaged over primitive characters $\chi$ modulo $q$ and all moduli $q \leq Q$. In 2007, as an application of their ``asymptotic large sieve'', Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan showed that when an additional short $t$-averaging is introduced into the problem, an asymptotic can be obtained. In this paper we show that this extraneous averaging can be removed, and we thus obtain an asymptotic for the original moment problem considered by Huxley. The main new difficulty in our work is the appearance of certain challenging ``unbalanced'' sums that arise as soon as the $t$-aspect averaging is removed.

Abstract:Starting from Montgomery's conjecture, there has been a substantial interest on the connections of random matrix theory and the theory of L-functions. In particular, moments of characteristic polynomials of random matrices have been considered in various works to estimate the asymptotics of moments of L-function families. In this paper, we first consider joint moments of the characteristic polynomial of a symplectic random matrix and its second derivative. We obtain the asymptotics, along with a representation of the leading order coefficient in terms of the solution of a Painleve equation. This gives us the conjectural asymptotics of the corresponding joint moments over families of Dirichlet L-functions. In doing so, we compute the asymptotics of a certain additive Jacobi statistic, which could be of independent interest in random matrix theory. Finally, we consider a slightly different type of joint moment that is the analogue of an average considered over the unitary group in various works before. We obtain the asymptotics and the leading order coefficient explicitly.

Abstract:Representation theory and the theory of symmetric functions have played a central role in Random Matrix Theory in the computation of quantities such as joint moments of traces and joint moments of characteristic polynomials of matrices drawn from the Circular Unitary Ensemble and other Circular Ensembles related to the classical compact groups. The reason is that they enable the derivation of exact formulae, which then provide a route to calculating the large-matrix asymptotics of these quantities. We develop a parallel theory for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrices, and other related unitary invariant matrix ensembles. This allows us to write down exact formulae in these cases for the joint moments of the traces and the joint moments of the characteristic polynomials in terms of appropriately defined symmetric functions. As an example of an application, for the joint moments of the traces we derive explicit asymptotic formulae for the rate of convergence of the moments of polynomial functions of GUE matrices to those of a standard normal distribution when the matrix size tends to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove asymptotic formulas of mixed moments of $\rm GL(2)$ and its symmetric square $L$-functions for both Hecke--Maass cusp forms and holomorphic Hecke eigenforms in short intervals. As an application, we prove quantitative simultaneous non-vanishing of central values of these $L$-functions.

Abstract:We study the joint distribution of random abelian and non-abelian groups. In the abelian case, we prove several universality results for the joint distribution of the multiple cokernels for random $p$-adic matrices. In the non-abelian case, we compute the joint distribution of random groups given by the quotients of the free profinite group by random relations. In both cases, we generalize the known results on the distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices and random groups. Our proofs are based on the observation that mixed moments determine the joint distribution of random groups, which extends the works of Wood for abelian groups and Sawin for non-abelian groups.

On Wilks' joint moment formulas for embedded principal minors of Wishart random matrices

Abstract:In 1934, the American statistician Samuel S. Wilks derived remarkable formulas for the joint moments of embedded principal minors of sample covariance matrices in multivariate Gaussian populations, and he used them to compute the moments of sample statistics in various applications related to multivariate linear regression. These important but little-known moment results were extended in 1963 by the Australian statistician A. Graham Constantine using Bartlett's decomposition. In this note, a new proof of Wilks' results is derived using the concept of iterated Schur complements, thereby bypassing Bartlett's decomposition. Furthermore, Wilks' open problem of evaluating joint moments of disjoint principal minors of Wishart random matrices is related to the Gaussian product inequality conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider linear functionals defined on an unital commutative real algebra A and establish characterizations for moment functionals on compact sets of characters that depend only on the given functional. For example, we obtain a characterization of a moment functional on a product of symmetric intervals, in which we do not assume that the functional is positive semidefinite but positive on a semiring of A, and a characterization of a moment functional that is a solution to the moment problem on a product of arbitrary intervals. We also prove a Positivstellensatz for an archimedean cone, which is neither a quadratic module nor a semiring.

Abstract:The joint moments of the derivatives of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix, and also a variant of the characteristic polynomial that is real on the unit circle, in the large matrix size limit, have been studied intensively in the past twenty five years, partly in relation to conjectural connections to the Riemann zeta-function and Hardy's function. We completely settle the most general version of the problem of convergence of these joint moments, after they are suitably rescaled, for an arbitrary number of derivatives and with arbitrary positive real exponents. Our approach relies on a hidden, higher-order exchangeable structure, that of an exchangeable array. Using these probabilistic techniques, we then give a combinatorial formula for the leading order coefficient in the asymptotics of the joint moments, when the power on the characteristic polynomial itself is a positive real number and the exponents of the derivatives are integers, in terms of a finite number of finite-dimensional integrals which are explicitly computable. Finally, we develop a method, based on a class of Hankel determinants shifted by partitions, that allows us to give an exact representation of all these joint moments, for finite matrix size, in terms of derivatives of Painlevé V transcendents, and then for the leading order coefficient in the large-matrix limit in terms of derivatives of solutions of the $\sigma$-Painlevé III' equation. Equivalently, we can represent all the joint moments of power sum linear statistics of a certain determinantal point process behind this problem in terms of derivatives of $\sigma$-Painlevé III' transcendents. This gives an efficient way to compute all these quantities explicitly. Our methods can be used to obtain analogous results for a number of other models sharing the same features.
