Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.
Unique continuation at infinity: Carleman estimates on general warped cylinders

Abstract:We obtain a vanishing result for solutions of the inequality $|\Delta u|\le q_1|u|+q_2|\nabla u|$ that decay to zero along a very general warped cylindrical end of a Riemannian manifold. The appropriate decay condition at infinity on $u$ is related to the behavior of the potential functions $q_1$ and $q_2$ and to the asymptotic geometry of the end. The main ingredient is a new Carleman estimate of independent interest. Geometric applications to conformal deformations and to minimal graphs are presented.

Unique continuation estimates on manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below

Abstract:We prove quantitative unique continuation estimates for relatively dense sets and spectral subspaces associated to small energies of Schrödinger operators on Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. The upper bound for the energy range and the constant appearing in the estimate are given in terms of the lower bound of the Ricci curvature and the parameters of the relatively dense set.

Abstract:We investigate the quantitative unique continuation of solutions to higher order elliptic equations with singular coefficients. Quantitative unique continuation described by the vanishing order is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize the vanishing order of solutions for higher order elliptic equations in terms of the norms of coefficient functions in their respective Lebesgue spaces. New versions of quantitative Carleman estimates are established.

Abstract:We prove a new quantitative uniqueness of continuation for elliptic equations from Cauchy data. We provide a simple and direct proof based only on a Carleman inequality. Similar result for the Stokes equation is also shown.

Abstract:The strong unique continuation property for Einstein metrics can be concluded from the well-known fact that Einstein metrics are analytic in geodesic normal coordinates. Here we give a proof of the same result that given two Einstein metrics with the same Ricci curvature on a fixed manifold, if they agree to infinite order around a point, then they must coincide, up to a local diffeomorphism, in a neighborhood of the point. The novelty of our method lies in the use of a Carleman inequality and thus circumventing the use of analyticity; thus the method is robust under certain non-analytic perturbations. As an example, we also show the strong unique continuation property for the Riemannian Einstein-scalar-field system with cosmological constant.

Abstract:Recent (scale-free) quantitative unique continuation estimates for spectral subspaces of Schrödinger operators are extended to allow singular potentials such as certain $L^p$-functions. The proof is based on accordingly adapted Carleman estimates. Applications include Wegner and initial length scale estimates for random Schrödinger operators and control theory for the controlled heat equation with singular heat generation term.

Abstract:We investigate the quantitative uniqueness of solutions to parabolic equations with lower order terms on compact smooth manifolds. Quantitative uniqueness is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize quantitative uniqueness by the rate of vanishing. We can obtain the vanishing order of solutions by $C^{1, 1}$ norm of the potential functions, as well as the $L^\infty$ norm of the coefficient functions. Some quantitative Carleman estimates and three cylinder inequalities are established.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the quantitative estimates of the unique continuation property for solutions of an elliptic equation $\Delta u = V u + W_1 \cdot \nabla u + \hbox{div} (W_2 u)$ in an open, connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $d \geq 3$. Here, $V \in L^{q_0}$, $W_1 \in L^{q_1}$, and $W_2 \in L^{q_2}$ with $q_0 > d/2$, $q_1 > d$, and $q_2 > d$. Our aim is to provide an explicit quantification of the unique continuation property with respect to the norms of the potentials. To achieve this, we revisit the Carleman estimates established in [Dehman-Ervedoza-Thabouti-2023] and prove a refined version of them, and we combine them with an argument due to T. Wolff introduced in [Wolff-1992] for the proof of unique continuation for solutions of equations of the form $\Delta u = V u + W_1 \cdot \nabla u$.

Quantitative strong unique continuation for elliptic operators -- application to an inverse spectral problem

Abstract:Based on the three-ball inequality and the doubling inequality established in [23], we quantify the strong unique continuation established by Koch and Tataru [21] for elliptic operators with unbounded lower-order coefficients. We also derive a uniform quantitative strong unique continuation for eigenfunctions that we use to prove that two Dirichlet-Laplace-Beltrami operators are gauge equivalent whenever their corresponding metrics coincide in the vicinity of the boundary and their boundary spectral data coincide on a subset of positive measure.

Abstract:On a $2m$-dimensional closed manifold we investigate the existence of prescribed $Q$-curvature metrics with conical singularities. We present here a general existence and multiplicity result in the supercritical regime. To this end, we first carry out a blow-up analysis of a $2m$th-order PDE associated to the problem and then apply a variational argument of min-max type. For $m>1$, this seems to be the first existence result for supercritical conic manifolds different from the sphere.

Abstract:We consider the following question arising in the theory of differential inclusions: given an elliptic set $\Gamma$ and a Sobolev map $u$ whose gradient lies in the quasiconformal envelope of $\Gamma$ and touches $\Gamma$ on a set of positive measure, must $u$ be affine? We answer this question positively for a suitable notion of ellipticity, which for instance encompasses the case where $\Gamma \subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is an elliptic, smooth, closed curve. More precisely, we prove that the distance of $D u$ to $\Gamma$ satisfies the strong unique continuation property. As a by-product, we obtain new results for nonlinear Beltrami equations and recover known results for the reduced Beltrami equation and the Monge--Ampère equation: concerning the latter, we obtain a new proof of the $W^{2,1+\varepsilon}$-regularity for two-dimensional solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we established a quantitative unique continuation results for a coupled heat equations, with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, on a bounded convex domain Ω of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with smooth boundary ∂Ω. Our result shows that the value of the solutions can be determined uniquely by its value on an arbitrary open subset ω of Ω at any given positive time T.

Abstract:We prove a local unique continuation result for Schr\''odinger operators with time independent Lipschitz metrics and lower order terms which are Gevrey 2 in time and bounded in space. This implies global unique continuation from any open set in a connected Riemannian manifold. These results relax in the same geometric setting the analyticity assumption in time of the Tataru-Robbiano-Zuily-H\''ormander theorem for these operators. The proof is based on (i) a Tataru-Robbiano-Zuily-H\''ormander type Carleman estimate with a nonlocal weight adapted to the anisotropy of the Schr\''odinger operator and (ii) the description of the conjugation of the Schr\''odinger operator with Gevrey coefficients by this nonlocal weight.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the quantitative unique continuation property of solutions to \begin{equation*} \Delta^2u=Vu, \end{equation*} where $V\in W^{1,\infty}$. We show that the maximal vanishing order of the solutions is not large than \begin{equation} C\left(\|V\|^{\frac{1}{4}}_{L^{\infty}}+\|\nabla V\|_{L^{\infty}}+1\right). \end{equation} Our key argument is to lift the original equation to that with a positive potential, then decompose the resulted fourth-order equation into a special system of two second-order equations. Based on the special system, we define a variant frequency function with weights and derive its almost monotonicity to establishing some doubling inequalities with explicit dependence on the Sobolev norm of the potential function.
