Abstract:In this article we apply an L-system to prove a recurrence formula for the length of the boundary of iterands of the well known Harter-Heighway dragon curve, a space filling curve with fractal boundary. This leads to finding formulas for related sequences of certain binary strings and ternary matrices. This proves some long standing conjectures for the recurrence relation for the number of terms in the boundary of the dragon curve, first stated in unpublished work Daykin and Tucker in 1975.

On Deformation of the Fractals from Complex Dynamics

Abstract:A method for deforming fractals from complex dynamics is proposed. Firstly, an elementary fractal transfiguration model of complex quadratic dynamics in the form of a six-parameter family is presented. Secondly, a two-dimensional extension factor, also including six control parameters, is constructed. Finally, a transfiguration algorithm is put forward, which begins with an iteration of the fractal transfiguration model for computation of the periodicities of all discrete points in the given complex plane and then exerts a 2D extension factor on every point to transfer them while keeping their periodicities unchanged. Experimental results demonstrate that our fractal deformation algorithm is simple, intuitive, foreseeable and easy to control. It is hoped that our investigation would result in new perspectives for the deformation of other deterministic fractals as well.

Abstract:In the past 50 years, the formalism of L-systems has been successfully used and developed to model the growth of filamentous and branching biological forms. These simulations take place in classical 2-D or 3-D Euclidean spaces. However, various biological forms actually grow in curved, non-Euclidean, spaces. This is for example the case of vein networks growing within curved leaf blades, of unicellular filaments, such as pollen tubes, growing on curved surfaces to fertilize distant ovules, of teeth patterns growing on folded epithelia of animals, of diffusion of chemical or mechanical signals at the surface of plant or animal tissues, etc. To model these forms growing in curved spaces, we thus extended the formalism of L-systems to non-Euclidean spaces. In a first step we show that this extension can be carried out by integrating concepts of differential geometry in the notion of turtle geometry. We then illustrate how this extension can be applied to model and program the development of both mathematical and biological forms on curved surfaces embedded in our Euclidean space. We provide various examples applied to plant development. We finally show that this approach can be extended to more abstract spaces, called abstract Riemannian spaces, that are not embedded into any higher space, while being intrinsically curved. We suggest that this abstract extension can be used to provide a new approach for effective modeling of tropism phenomena and illustrate this idea on a few conceptual examples.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:A creative method for supporting computer_aided architectural design was presented in this paper, which relied on the L-system, shape grammar and the space surface equation theory. Abstract:Here we study a class of second-order nonautonomous differential equations, and the corresponding planar and spatial systems, from the point of view of fractal geometry. The fractal oscillatority of solutions at infinity is measured by oscillatory and phase dimensions. The oscillatory dimension is defined as the box dimension of the reflected solution near the origin, while the phase dimension is defined as the box dimension of a trajectory of the corresponding planar system in the phase plane. Using the phase dimension of the second-order equation we compute the box dimension of a spiral trajectory of the spatial system, lying in Lipschitzian or H\" olderian surfaces. This phase dimension of the second-order equation is connected to the asymptotics of the associated Poincar\'e map. Also, the box dimension of a trajectory of the reduced normal form with one eigenvalue equals to zero, and a pair of pure imaginary eigenvalues has been computed when limit cycles bifurcate from the origin.

Abstract:We present an algorithm for generating curves filling the unit square; i.e. space-filling curves, from any given planar substitution satisfying a mild condition. The proposed algorithm is mimicking construction steps of Lebesgue's curve and is based on linear interpolation. Generated space-filling curves for some known substitutions are elucidated. Some of those substitutions further induce relatively dense fractal-like sets in the plane, whenever some additional assumptions are satisfied.

Abstract:We conformally weld (via "quantum zipping") two boundary arcs of a Liouville quantum gravity random surface to generate a random curve called the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE). We develop a theory of quantum fractal measures (consistent with the Knizhnik-Polyakov-Zamolochikov relation) and analyze their evolution under welding via SLE martingales. As an application, we construct the natural quantum length and boundary intersection measures on the SLE curve itself.

Random Disks of Constant Curvature: the Lattice Story

Abstract:We lay the groundwork for a UV-complete formulation of the Euclidean Jackiw-Teitelboim two-dimensional models of quantum gravity when the boundary lengths are finite, emphasizing the discretized approach. The picture that emerges is qualitatively new. For the disk topology, the problem reduces to counting so-called self-overlapping curves, that are closed loops that bound a distorted disk, with an appropriate multiplicity. We build a matrix model that does the correct counting. The theories in negative, zero and positive curvatures have the same UV description but drastically different macroscopic properties. The Schwarzian theory emerges in the limit of very large and negative cosmological constant in the negative curvature model, as an effective theory valid on distance scales much larger than the curvature length scale. In positive curvature, we argue that large geometries are ubiquitous and that the theory exists only for positive cosmological constant. Our discussion is pedagogical and includes a review of several relevant topics.

Abstract:We survey more recent attempts at enumerating the number of mountain-valley assignments that allow a given crease pattern to locally fold flat. In particular, we solve this problem for square twist tessellations and generalize the method used to a broader family of crease patterns. We also describe the more difficult case of the Miura-ori and a recently-discovered bijection with 3-vertex colorings of grid graphs.

Abstract:The Knuth Twin Dragon is a compact subset of the plane with fractal boundary of Hausdorff dimension $s = (\log \lambda)/(\log \sqrt{2})$, $\lambda^3 = \lambda^2 + 2$. Although the intersection with a generic line has Hausdorff dimension $s-1$, we prove that this does not occur for lines with rational parameters. We further describe the intersection of the Twin Dragon with the two diagonals as well as with various axis parallel lines.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider subsets of an attractor of an iterated function system in which each point is associated with an allowable word from an $S$-gap shift. The main result shows that bounds for the box dimension and Hausdorff dimension of a subfractal induced by an $S$-gap shift are given by the zeros of the upper and lower topological pressure functions.

Abstract:We formulate the helicaliser, which replaces a given smooth curve by another curve that winds around it. In our analysis, we relate this formulation to the geometrical properties of the self-similar circular fractal (the discrete version of the curved helical fractal). Iterative applications of the helicaliser to a given curve yields a set of helicalisations, with the infinitely helicalised object being a fractal. We derive the Hausdorff dimension for the infinitely helicalised straight line and circle, showing that it takes the form of the self-similar dimension for a self-similar fractal, with lower bound of 1. Upper bounds to the Hausdorff dimension as functions of $\omega$ have been determined for the linear helical fractal, curved helical fractal and circular fractal, based on the no-self-intersection constraint. For large number of windings $\omega\rightarrow\infty$, the upper bounds all have the limit of 2. This would suggest that carrying out a topological analysis on the structure of chromosomes by modelling it as a two-dimensional surface may be beneficial towards further understanding on the dynamics of DNA packaging.

Tube Formulae for Generalized von Koch Fractals through Scaling Functional Equations

Abstract:In this work, we provide a treatment of scaling functional equations in a general setting involving fractals arising from sufficiently nice self-similar systems in order to analyze the tube functions, tube zeta functions, and complex dimensions of relative fractal drums. Namely, we express the volume of a tubular neighborhood in terms of scaled copies of itself and a remainder term and then solve this expression by means of the tube zeta functions. We then apply our methods to analyze these generalized von Koch fractals, which are a class of fractals that allow for different regular polygons and scaling ratios to be used in the construction of the standard von Koch curve and snowflake. In particular, we describe the volume of an inner tubular neighborhoods and the possible complex dimensions of such fractal snowflakes.

Abstract:We define a new structure on a space endowed with convexities, and call it a fractoconvex structure (or, a space with fractoconvexity). We introduce two operations on a set of fractoconvexities and in a special case we show that they satisfy the laws for a distributive lattice. We establish a connection between fractoconvex sets and convex sets using the concept of independent convexities, based on the possibility of representing a fractoconvex set as the intersection of its convex hulls. Finally, we consider some examples of fractoconvexities on the 2-sphere and on $\mathbb Z$.

Abstract:Based on a function represented by the Cantor series and a binary fraction of real numbers, a class of rough surfaces is constructed in this paper. The method used completely differs from those previously developed. In addition, the fractal dimensions, as an indicator of the roughness of such surfaces, are also investigated. The calculating formulas for the box-counting and packing dimensions are derived, and the upper and lower bounds of the Hausdorff dimension are estimated.

Abstract:Irregular boundary lines can be characterized by fractal dimension, which provides important information for spatial analysis of complex geographical phenomena such as cities. However, it is difficult to calculate fractal dimension of boundaries systematically when image data are limited. An approximation estimation formula of boundary dimension based on square is widely applied in urban and ecological studies. But the boundary dimension is sometimes overestimated. This paper is devoted to developing a series of practicable formulae for boundary dimension estimation using ideas from fractals. A number of regular figures are employed as reference shapes, from which the corresponding geometric measure relations are constructed; from these measure relations, two sets of fractal dimension estimation formulae are derived for describing fractal-like boundaries. Correspondingly, a group of shape indexes can be defined. A finding is that different formulae have different merits and spheres of application, and the second set of boundary dimensions is a function of the shape indexes. Under condition of data shortage, these formulae can be utilized to estimate boundary dimension values rapidly. Moreover, the relationships between boundary dimension and shape indexes are instructive to understand the association and differences between characteristic scales and scaling. The formulae may be useful for the prefractal studies in geography, geomorphology, ecology, landscape science, and especially, urban science.

Abstract:We study the de Casteljau subdivision algorithm for Bezier curves and the Lane-Riesenfeld algorithm for uniform B-spline curves over the integers mod m , where m>2 is an odd integer. We place the integers mod m evenly spaced around a unit circle so that the integer k mod m is located at the position on the unit circle at e2πki/m=cos(2kπ/m)+isin(2kπ/m)↔(cos(2kπ/m),sin(2kπ/m)) . Given a sequence of integers (s0,...,sm) mod m , we connect consecutive values sjsj+1 on the unit circle with straight line segments to form a control polygon . We show that if we start these subdivision procedures with the sequence (0,1,...,m) mod m , then the sequences generated by these recursive subdivision algorithms spawn control polygons consisting of the regular m -sided polygon and regular m -pointed stars that repeat with a period equal to the minimal integer k such that 2k=±1modm . Moreover, these control polygons represent the eigenvectors of the associated subdivision matrices corresponding to the eigenvalue 2−1modm. We go on to study the effects of these subdivision procedures on more general initial control polygons, and we show in particular that certain control polygons, including the orbits of regular m -sided polygons and the complete graphs of m -sided polygons, are fixed points of these subdivision procedures.
