Abstract:In earlier papers it was shown that the correct kinetic term for scalar, vector gauge field and the spin two field in AdSD+1 space is obtained starting from the exact renormalization group (ERG) equation for a CFTD perturbed by scalar composite, conserved vector current, and conserved traceless energy momentum tensor respectively. In this paper interactions are studied, and it is shown that a flipped version of the Polchinski ERG equation that evolves toward the UV can be written down and is useful for making contact with the usual AdS/CFT prescriptions for correlation function calculations. The scalar-scalar-spin-2 interaction in the bulk is derived from the ERG equation in the large N semiclassical approximation. It is also shown that after mapping to AdS the interaction is local on a scale of the bare cutoff rather than the moving cutoff (which would have corresponded to the anti–de Sitter scale). The map to AdSD+1 plays a crucial role in this locality. The local nature of the coupling ensures that this interaction term in the bulk action is obtained by gauge fixing a general coordinate invariant scalar kinetic term in the bulk action. Mapping from Exact RG to Holographic RG in Flat Space

Abstract:In earlier papers a method was given for constructing from first principles a holographic bulk dual action in Euclidean AdS space for a Euclidean CFT on the boundary. The starting point was an Exact RG for the boundary theory. The bulk action is obtained from the evolution operator for this ERG followed by a field redefinition. This procedure guarantees that the boundary correlators are all recovered correctly. In this paper we use the same method in an attempt to construct a holographic dual action for the free $O(N)$ model where the bulk is flat Euclidean space with a plane boundary wall. The scalar cubic interaction is found to be local (in $D=3$) but depends on the distance from the boundary - which can be interpreted as a non constant background dilaton field. The spin 2 - scalar - scalar interaction is found to be non local - in contrast to the AdS case. A field redefinition that makes the kinetic term quartic in derivatives can be done to mitigate (but not eliminate) this non locality. It is shown that, in spite of the non locality, the action can be obtained by gauge fixing an action that has the linearized gauge invariance associated with general coordinate invariance. Boundary correlators (two point and three point) are shown to be reproduced by bulk calculations - as expected in this approach to holography.

Abstract:In the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence, the Fefferman--Graham (FG) gauge offers a useful way to express asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces, allowing a clear identification of their boundary structure. A known feature of this approach is that choosing a particular conformal representative for the boundary metric breaks explicitly the boundary scaling symmetry. Recent developments have shown that it is possible to generalize the FG gauge to restore boundary Weyl invariance by adopting the Weyl--Fefferman--Graham gauge. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional gravity and study the emergence of a boundary Weyl structure when considering the most general AdS boundary conditions introduced by Grumiller and Riegler. We extend the holographic renormalization scheme to incorporate Weyl covariant quantities, identifying new subleading divergences appearing at the boundary. To address these, we introduce a new codimension-two counterterm, or corner term, that ensures the finiteness of the gravitational action. From here, we construct the quantum-generating functional, the holographic stress tensor, and compute the corresponding Weyl anomaly, showing that the latter is now expressed in a full Weyl covariant way. Finally, we discuss explicit applications to holographic integrable models and accelerating black holes. For the latter, we show that the new corner term plays a crucial role in the computation of the Euclidean on-shell action.

Abstract:In [1] it was observed that asymptotic boundary conditions play an important role in the study of holographic entanglement beyond AdS/CFT. In particular, the Ryu-Takayanagi proposal must be modified for warped AdS3 (WAdS3) with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this paper, we consider AdS3 and WAdS3 with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The conjectured holographic duals are warped conformal field theories (WCFTs), featuring a Virasoro-Kac-Moody algebra. We provide a holographic calculation of the entanglement entropy and Rényi entropy using AdS3/WCFT and WAdS3/WCFT dualities. Our bulk results are consistent with the WCFT results derived by Castro-Hofman-Iqbal using the Rindler method. Comparing with [1], we explicitly show that the holographic entanglement entropy is indeed affected by boundary conditions. Both results differ from the Ryu-Takayanagi proposal, indicating new relations between spacetime geometry and quantum entanglement for holographic dualities beyond AdS/CFT.

Abstract:We investigate the Schwarzschild-(anti) de Sitter spacetime with the anisotropic metric ansatz. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for such a metric is solved numerically. In the presence of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$, we show that two classical wave packets can be annihilated inside the black hole horizon, i.e., the annihilation-to-nothing scenario. It is interesting that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation can be extended to the asymptotic de Sitter spacetime outside the cosmological horizon. Surprisingly, the only bounded nontrivial wave function beyond the cosmological horizon satisfies the DeWitt boundary condition, i.e., the wave function must vanish at a certain finite radius. This might be an alternative explanation to the classicalization of quantum fluctuations in the de Sitter space, where this topic is also related to decoherence.

Abstract:In this note, we show that the noncovariant metric boundary term obtained from the nonlinear sigma model worldsheet derivation of the bulk off-shell sphere partition function is closely related to the Einstein boundary term in the Gamma-Gamma noncovariant action. In fact, when expressed in terms of the trace of the extrinsic curvature tensor, we illustrate that this boundary term has one-half the coefficient of the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term required such that the total (bulk plus boundary) off-shell classical action has a well-posed variational principle with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Abstract:We present the Wilsonian effective action as a solution of the exact RG equation for the critical $O(N)$ vector model in the large $N$ limit. Below four dimensions, the exact effective action can be expressed in a closed form as a transcendental function of two leading scaling operators with infinitely many derivatives. From the exact solution that describes the RG flow from a UV theory to the fixed point theory in the IR, we obtain the mapping between UV operators and IR scaling operators. It is shown that IR scaling operators are given by sums of infinitely many UV operators with infinitely many derivatives.

Abstract:We analyse the connections between the Wheeler DeWitt approach for two dimensional quantum gravity and holography, focusing mainly in the case of Liouville theory coupled to c = 1 matter. Our motivation is to understand whether some form of averaging is essential for the boundary theory, if we wish to describe the bulk quantum gravity path integral of this two dimensional example. The analysis hence, is in a spirit similar to the recent studies of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT)-gravity. Macroscopic loop operators define the asymptotic region on which the holographic boundary dual resides. Matrix quantum mechanics (MQM) and the associated double scaled fermionic field theory on the contrary, is providing an explicit "unitary in superspace" description of the complete dynamics of such two dimensional universes with matter, including the effects of topology change. If we try to associate a Hilbert space to a single boundary dual, it seems that it cannot contain all the information present in the non-perturbative bulk quantum gravity path integral and MQM.

On the perturbative formalism and a possible quantum discrete spectrum for the Regge-Wheeler equation of a de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:In this paper we study the perturbative regime in the static patch of de Sitter metric in the Regge-Wheeler formalism. After realizing that perturbative regime in a de Sitter spacetime depicted in terms of usual spherical coordinates cannot be extended up to the cosmological horizon, we study perturbative equations, in particular the axial ones, in terms of the tortoise coordinate $r_*$. We show that perturbative regime can be extended up to the cosmological horizon, provided that suitable boundary conditions are chosen. As an application, we explore the Regge-Wheeler equation at short distances by performing a taylor expansion. In order to study some possible quantum effects at short distances, we impose to the equation so obtained the same boundary conditions suitable for a quantum 3D harmonic oscillator. As a result, a discrete spectrum can be obtained. The aforementioned spectrum is analysed and a relation with possible effects denoting quantum behavior of gravitons is suggested.

Abstract:We discuss the possibility to define exact RG equations for a UV regulated Wilsonian action based on a proper time (PT) regulator function. We start from a functional mapping which shows how each particular flow equation (and RG scheme) is associated to infinitely many scale dependent field redefinitions, which are related to specific coarse-graining procedures. On specializing to a sub-family of one parameter PT regulators we briefly analyze few results for the Ising Universality class in three dimensions, obtained within a second order truncation in the derivative expansion of the Wilsonian action.

Wheeler DeWitt States of a Charged AdS$_4$ Black Hole

Abstract:We solve the Wheeler DeWitt equation for the planar Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole in a minisuperspace approximation. We construct semiclassical Wheeler DeWitt states from Gaussian wavepackets that are peaked on classical black hole interior solutions. By using the metric component $g_{xx}$ as a clock, these states are evolved through both the exterior and interior horizons. Close to the singularity, we show that quantum fluctuations in the wavepacket become important, and therefore the classicality of the minisuperspace approximation breaks down. Towards the AdS boundary, the Wheeler DeWitt states are used to recover the Lorentzian partition function of the dual theory living on this boundary. This partition function is specified by an energy and a charge. Finally, we show that the Wheeler DeWitt states know about the black hole thermodynamics, recovering the grand canonical thermodynamic potential after an appropriate averaging at the black hole horizon.

Notes on $n$-point Witten diagrams in AdS${}_2$

Abstract:Witten diagrams provide a perturbative framework for calculations in Anti-de-Sitter space, and play an essential role in a variety of holographic computations. In the case of this study in AdS$_2$, the one-dimensional boundary allows for a simple setup, in which we obtain perturbative analytic results for correlators with the residue theorem. This elementary method is used to find all scalar $n$-point contact Witten diagrams for external operators of conformal dimension $\Delta=1$ and $\Delta=2$, and to determine topological correlators of Yang-Mills in AdS$_2$. Another established method is applied to explicitly compute exchange diagrams and give an example of a Polyakov block in $d=1$. We also check perturbatively a recently proposed multipoint Ward identity with the strong coupling expansion of the six-point function of operators inserted on the 1/2 BPS Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}$=4 SYM.

Derivation of the GKP-Witten relation by symmetry without Lagrangian

Abstract:We derive the GKP-Witten relation in terms of correlation functions by symmetry without referring to a Lagrangian or the large $N$ expansion. By constructing bulk operators from boundary operators in conformal field theory (CFT) by the conformal smearing, we first determine bulk-boundary 2-pt functions for an arbitrary spin using both conformal and bulk symmetries, then evaluate their small $z$ behaviors, where $z$ is the $(d+1)$-th coordinate in the bulk. Next, we explicitly determine small $z$ behaviors of bulk-boundary-boundary 3-pt functions also by the symmetries, while small $z$ behaviors of correlation functions among one bulk and $n$ boundary operators with $n\ge 3$ are fixed by the operator product expansion (OPE). Combining all results, we construct the GKP-Witten relation in terms of these correlation functions at all orders in an external source $J$. We compare our non-Lagrangian approach with the standard approach employing the bulk action. Our results indicate that the GKP-Witten relation holds not only for holographic CFTs but also for generic CFTs as long as certain conditions are satisfied.

Abstract:We show that the strongly coupled field theory holographically dual to the Gubser-Rocha anti-de-Sitter Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory describes not a single non-trivial AdS$_2$ IR fixed point, but a one-parameter family. It is dual to a local quantum critical phase instead of a quantum critical point. This result follows from a detailed analysis of the possible quantizations of the gravitational theory that is consistent with the thermodynamics of the analytical Gubser-Rocha black hole solution. The analytic Gubser-Rocha black hole is only a 2-parameter subset of all possible solutions, and we construct other members numerically. These new numerical solutions correspond to turning on an additional scalar charge. Moreover, each solution has multiple holographic interpretations depending on the quantization chosen. In one particular quantization involving a multitrace deformation the scalar charge is a marginal operator. In other quantizations where the marginal multitrace operator is turned off, the analytic Gubser-Rocha black hole does not describe a finite temperature conformal fluid.

On boundary degrees of freedom in three dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime and thermofield-double

Abstract:In this article, we will study the Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) action over a co-dimension one hypersurface, called the ``physical boundary,'' close to the boundary of AdS$_3$. For that, we take a coordinate system that consists of two times, one is associated with evolution on the boundary, and the second is associated with evolution into the bulk. The resulting action is divergent and needs regularization. We consider two particular schemes. In the first scheme, we will add the Einstein-Hilbert on-shell action as the counter-term, which, while cancels the divergent part, adds the contribution of deep in the bulk, such as an existing horizon. The resulting action includes the Liouville action, which describes the curvature of the physical boundary. In the second scheme, however, we prescribe a natural regularization for GHY action without adding any counter-term. The resulting action will include two copies of Schwarzian actions associated with the left and right-moving reparametrization modes. At finite temperature, these modes live on two disjoint circles. We will show that these are the thermofield-double's effective degrees of freedom. While the first scheme is more common in practice, the second scheme may be more convenient for Susskind-'t Hooft proposal for holography.

Abstract:For spacetimes that are not asymptotic to anti-de Sitter (non AAdS) space, we adapt the Lewkowycz-Maldacena procedure to find the holographic entanglement entropy. The key observation, which to our knowledge is not very well appreciated, is that asymptotic boundary conditions play an essential role on extending the replica trick to the bulk. For non AAdS, we expect the following three main modifications: (1) the expansion near the special surface has to be compatible with the asymptotic expansion; (2) periodic conditions are imposed to coordinates on the phase space with diagonalized symplectic structure, not to all fields appearing in the action; (3) evaluating the entanglement functional using the boundary term method amounts to evaluating the presymplectic structure at the special surface, where some additional exact form may contribute. An explicit calculation is carried out for three-dimensional warped anti-de Sitter spacetime (WAdS_{3}) in a consistent truncation of string theory, the so-called S-dual dipole theory. It turns out that the generalized gravitational entropy in WAdS_{3} is captured by the least action of a charged particle in WAdS_{3} space, or equivalently, by the geodesic length in an auxiliary AdS_{3}. Consequently, the bulk calculation agrees with the CFT results, providing another piece of evidence for the WAdS_{3}/CFT_{2} correspondence.

Abstract:We consider the boundary dual of AdS3xS3xK3 for NS5-flux Q5=1, which is described by a sigma model with target space given by the d-fold symmetric product of K3. Building on results in algebraic geometry, we address the problem of deforming it away from the orbifold point from the viewpoint of topological strings. We propose how the 't Hooft expansion can be geometrized in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants and, in favorable settings, how it can be summed up to all orders in closed form. We consider an explicit example in detail for which we discuss the genus expansion around the orbifold point, as well as the divergence in the strong coupling regime. We find that within the domain of convergence, scale separation does not occur. However, in order for the mathematical framework to be applicable in the first place, we need to consider "reduced" Gromov-Witten invariants that fit, as we argue, naturally to topologically twisted N=4 strings. There are some caveats and thus to what extent this toy model captures the physics of strings on AdS3xS3xK3 remains to be seen.
