Abstract:We consider a nonlinear system of ODEs, where the underlying linear dynamics are determined by a Hermitian random matrix ensemble. We prove that the leading order dynamics in the weakly nonlinear, infinite volume limit are determined by a solution to the corresponding kinetic wave equation on a non-trivial timescale. Our proof relies on estimates for Haar-distributed unitary matrices obtained from Weingarten calculus, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a global existence result for nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations in infinite homogeneous waveguides, R×M, with smooth small data, where M=(M,g) is a Zoll manifold, or a compact revolution hypersurface. The method is based on normal forms, eigenfunction expansion and the special distribution of eigenvalues of the Laplace–Beltrami on such manifolds.

Abstract:In accordance with the Keller-Maslov global WKB theory, a semiclassical scalar wave field is best encoded as a triple consisting of (i) a Lagrangian submanifold Λ in the ray phase space, (ii) a density μ on Λ, and (iii) an overall phase factor ϕ. We present the Hamiltonian structure of the Cauchy problem for such a "geometric semiclassical state" in the special case where the wave operator is Hermetian. Variational, symplectic, and Poisson formulations of the time evolution equations for (Λ,μ,ϕ) are identitfied. Because we work in terms of the Keller-Maslov global WKB ansatz, as opposed to the more restrictive ψ=a exp(i S/ϵ), all of our results are insensitive to the presence of caustics. In particular, because the variational principle is insensitive to caustics, the latter may be used to construct structure-perserving numerical integrators for scalar wave equations.

Abstract:Classical mechanics for individual physical systems and quantum mechanics of non-relativistic particles are shown to be exceptional cases of a generalized dynamics described in terms of maps between two manifolds, the source being configuration space. The target space is argued to be 2-dimensional and flat, and their orthogonal directions are physically interpreted. All terms in the map equation have a geometrical meaning in the target space, and the pull-back of its rotational Killing one-form allows the construction of a velocity field in configuration space. Identification of this velocity field with tangent vectors in the source space leads to the dynamical law of motion. For a specific choice of an arbitrary scalar function present in the map equation, and using Cartesian coordinates in the target space, the map equation becomes linear and can be reduced to the Schrödinger equation. We link the bi-dimensionality of the target space with the essential non-locality of quantum mechanics. Many extensions of the framework here presented are immediate, with deep consequences yet to be explored.

On the wave turbulence theory for a stochastic KdV type equation

Abstract:Starting from the stochastic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation, a multidimensional KdV type equation on a hypercubic lattice, we provide a derivation of the 3-wave kinetic equation. We show that the two point correlation function can be asymptotically expressed as the solution of the 3-wave kinetic equation at the kinetic limit under very general assumptions: the initial condition is out of equilibrium, the dimension is $d\ge 2$, the smallness of the nonlinearity $\lambda$ is allowed to be independent of the size of the lattice, the weak noise is chosen not to compete with the weak nonlinearity and not to inject energy into the equation. Unlike the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, for which such a general result is commonly expected without the noise, the kinetic description of the deterministic lattice ZK equation is unlikely to happen. One of the key reasons is that the dispersion relation of the lattice ZK equation leads to a singular manifold, on which not only $3$-wave interactions but also all $m$-wave interactions ($m\ge3$) are allowed to happen. This phenomenon has been first observed by Lukkarinen \cite{lukkarinen2007asymptotics} as a counterexample for which one of the main tools to derive kinetic equations from wave equations (the suppression of crossings) fails to hold true. To the best of our knowledge, the work provides the first rigorous derivation of nonlinear 3-wave kinetic equations. Also this is the first derivation for wave kinetic equations in the lattice setting and out-of-equilibrium.

Universal chaotic dynamics from Krylov space

Abstract:Krylov complexity measures the spread of the wavefunction in the Krylov basis, which is constructed using the Hamiltonian and an initial state. We investigate the evolution of the maximally entangled state in the Krylov basis for both chaotic and non-chaotic systems. For this purpose, we derive an Ehrenfest theorem for the Krylov complexity, which reveals its close relation to the spectrum. Our findings suggest that neither the linear growth nor the saturation of Krylov complexity is necessarily associated with chaos. However, for chaotic systems, we observe a universal rise-slope-ramp-plateau behavior in the transition probability from the initial state to one of the Krylov basis states. Moreover, a long ramp in the transition probability is a signal for spectral rigidity, characterizing quantum chaos. Also, this ramp is directly responsible for the late-time peak of Krylov complexity observed in the literature. On the other hand, for non-chaotic systems, this long ramp is absent. Therefore, our results help to clarify which features of the wave function time evolution in Krylov space characterize chaos. We exemplify this by considering the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with two-body or four-body interactions.

Abstract:We discuss the $(1+1)$-dimensional wave maps equation with values in a compact Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$. Motivated by the Gibbs measure problem, we consider Brownian paths on the manifold $\mathcal{M}$ as initial data. Our main theorem is the probabilistic local well-posedness of the associated initial value problem. The analysis in this setting combines analytic, geometric, and probabilistic methods.

Kinetic equations for systems with long-range interactions: a unified description

Abstract:We complete the existing literature on the kinetic theory of systems with long-range interactions. Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy, or using projection operator technics or a quasilinear theory, a general kinetic equation can be derived when collective effects are neglected. This equation (which is not well-known) applies to possibly spatially inhomogeneous systems, which is specific to systems with long-range interactions. Interestingly, the structure of this kinetic equation bears a clear physical meaning in terms of generalized Kubo relations. Furthermore, this equation takes a very similar form for stellar systems and two-dimensional point vortices providing therefore a unified description of the kinetic theory of these systems. If we assume that the system is spatially homogeneous (or axisymmetric for point vortices), this equation can be simplified and reduces to the Landau equation (or its counterpart for point vortices). Our formalism thus offers a simple derivation of Landau-type equations. We also use this general formalism to derive a kinetic equation, written in angle-action variables, describing spatially inhomogeneous systems with long-range interactions. This new derivation solves the shortcomings of our previous derivation [P.H. Chavanis, Physica A 377, 469 (2007)]. Finally, we consider a test particle approach and derive general expressions for the diffusion and friction (or drift) coefficients of a test particle evolving in a bath of field particles. We make contact with the expressions previously obtained in the literature. As an application of the kinetic theory, we argue that the relaxation time is shorter for inhomogeneous (or high-dimensional) systems than for homogeneous (or low-dimensional) systems because there are potentially more resonances.

Dynamical large deviations for an inhomogeneous wave kinetic theory: linear wave scattering by a random medium

Abstract:The wave kinetic equation predicts the averaged temporal evolution of a continuous spectral density of waves either randomly interacting or scattered by the fine structure of a medium. In a wide range of systems, the wave kinetic equation is derived from a fundamental equation of wave motion, which is symmetric through time-reversal. By contrast, the corresponding wave kinetic equation is time-irreversible. A similar paradox appears whenever one makes a mesoscopic description of the evolution of a very large number of microscopic degrees of freedom. Recently, it has been understood that the kinetic description itself, at a mesoscopic level, should not break time-reversal symmetry. The proper theoretical or mathematical tool to derive a mesoscopic time-reversal stochastic process is large deviation theory, for which the deterministic wave kinetic equation appears as the most probable evolution. This paper follows Bouchet (2020) and a series of other works that derive the large deviation Hamiltonians of the classical kinetic theories. We propose a derivation of the large deviation principle for the linear scattering of waves by a weak random potential in an inhomogeneous situation. This problem involves microscopic scales corresponding to the typical wavelengths and periods of the waves and mesoscopic ones which are the scales of spatial inhomogeneities in the spectral density and the time needed for the random scatterers to alter the wave spectrum. The main assumption of the kinetic regime is a large separation of these microscopic and mesoscopic scales. We choose a generic model of wave scattering by weak disorder: the Schrödinger equation with a random potential. We derive the path large deviation principle for the local spectral density and discuss its main properties. We show that the mesoscopic process obeys a time-reversal symmetry at the level of large deviations. (abridged)

Abstract:We consider the Klein--Gordon equation associated with the Laplace--Beltrami operator $\Delta$ on real hyperbolic spaces of dimension $n\!\ge\!2$; as $\Delta$ has a spectral gap, the wave equation is a particular case of our study. After a careful kernel analysis, we obtain dispersive and Strichartz estimates for a large family of admissible couples. As an application, we prove global well--posedness results for the corresponding semilinear equation with low regularity data.

Weak universality results for a class of nonlinear wave equations

Abstract: We study the weak universality of the two-dimensional fractional nonlinear wave equation. For a sequence of Hamiltonians of high-degree potentials scaling to the fractional $\Phi_2^4$, we first establish a \emph{sufficient and almost necessary} criteria for the convergence of invariant measures to the fractional $\Phi_2^4$. Then we prove the convergence result for the sequence of associated wave dynamics to the (renormalized) cubic wave equation. Our constraint on the fractional index is independent of the degree of the nonlinearity. This extends the result of Gubinelli-Koch-Oh [Renormalisation of the two-dimensional stochastic nonlinear wave equations, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 370 (2018)] to a situation where we do not have a local Cauchy theory with highly supercritical nonlinearities.

Abstract:We examine the validity of the kinetic description of wave turbulence for a model quadratic equation. We focus on the space-inhomogeneous case, which had not been treated earlier; the space-homogeneous case is a simple variant. We determine nonlinearities for which the kinetic description holds, or might fail, up to an arbitrarily small polynomial loss of the kinetic time scale. More precisely, we focus on the convergence of the Dyson series, which is an expansion of the solution in terms of the random data.

Abstract:We unify Brownian motion and quantum mechanics in a single mathematical framework. In particular, we show that non-relativistic quantum mechanics of a single spinless particle on a flat space can be described by a Wiener process that is rotated in the complex plane. We then extend this theory to relativistic stochastic theories on manifolds using the framework of second order geometry. As a byproduct, our results suggest that a consistent path integral based formulation of a quantum theory on a Lorentzian (Riemannian) manifold requires an Ito deformation of the Poincare (Galilean) symmetry, arising due to the coupling of the quadratic variation to the affine connection.

Abstract:The first part of my thesis lays the foundations to generalized Lorentz geometry. The basic algebraic structure of finite-dimensional modules over the ring of generalized numbers is investigated. The motivation for this part of my thesis evolved from the main topic, the wave equation on singular space-times. The second and main part of my thesis is devoted to establishing a local existence and uniqueness theorem for the wave equation on singular space-times. The singular Lorentz metric subject to our discussion is modeled within the special algebra on manifolds in the sense of Colombeau. Inspired by an approach to generalized hyperbolicity of conical-space times due to Vickers and Wilson, we succeed in establishing certain energy estimates, which by a further elaborated equivalence of energy integrals and Sobolev norms allow us to prove existence and uniqueness of local generalized solutions of the wave equation with respect to a wide class of generalized metrics. The third part of my thesis treats three different point value resp. uniqueness questions in algebras of generalized functions

Abstract:We propose a formal extension of thermodynamics and kinetic theories to a larger class of entropy functionals. Kinetic equations associated to Boltzmann, Fermi, Bose and Tsallis entropies are recovered as a special case. This formalism first provides a unifying description of classical and quantum kinetic theories. On the other hand, a generalized thermodynamical framework is justified to describe complex systems exhibiting anomalous diffusion. Finally, a notion of generalized thermodynamics emerges in the context of the the violent relaxation of collisionless stellar systems and two-dimensional vortices due to the existence of Casimir invariants and incomplete relaxation. A thermodynamical analogy can also be developed to analyze the nonlinear dynamical stability of stationary solutions of the Vlasov and 2D Euler-Poisson systems. On general grounds, we suggest that generalized entropies arise due to the existence of ``hidden constraints'' that modify the form of entropy that we would naively expect. Generalized kinetic equations are therefore ``effective'' equations that are introduced heuristically to describe complex systems.

Abstract:We establish sharp pointwise kernel estimates and dispersive properties for the wave equation on noncompact symmetric spaces of general rank. This is achieved by combining the stationary phase method and the Hadamard parametrix, and in particular, by introducing a subtle spectral decomposition, which allows us to overcome a well-known difficulty in higher rank analysis, namely the fact that the Plancherel density is not a differential symbol in general. As consequences, we deduce the Strichartz inequality for a large family of admissible pairs and prove global well-posedness results for the corresponding semilinear equation with low regularity data as on hyperbolic spaces.

Uniform stability of the damped wave equation with a confining potential in the Euclidean space

Abstract:We investigate trend to equilibrium for the damped wave equation with a confining potential in the Euclidean space. We provide with necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for the energy to decay exponentially uniformly. The proofs rely on tools from semiclassical analysis together with the construction of quasimodes of the damped wave operator. In addition to the Geometric Control Condition, which is familiar in the context of compact Riemannian manifolds, our work involves a new geometric condition due to the presence of turning points in the underlying classical dynamics which rules the propagation of waves in the high-energy asymptotics.
