Abstract:A new moving mesh scheme based on the Lagrange-Galerkin method for the approximation of the one-dimensional convection-diffusion equation is studied. The mesh movement, which is prescribed by a discretized dynamical system for the nodal points, follows the direction of convection. It is shown that under a restriction of the time increment the mesh movement cannot lead to an overlap of the elements and therefore an invalid mesh. For the linear element, optimal error estimates in the $\ell^\infty(L^2) \cap \ell^2(H_0^1)$ norm are proved in case of both, a first-order backward Euler method and a second-order two-step method in time. These results are based on new estimates of the time dependent interpolation operator derived in this work. Preservation of the total mass is verified for both choices of the time discretization. Numerical experiments are presented that confirm the error estimates and demonstrate that the proposed moving mesh scheme can circumvent limitations that the Lagrange-Galerkin method on a fixed mesh exhibits.
Numerical Analysis
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly studies a moving mesh method based on the Lagrange-Galerkin method for one-dimensional convection-diffusion equations. A new mesh moving scheme based on node dynamic system is proposed in the paper, and the mesh moving direction of this scheme follows the convection direction to prevent element overlap. For linear elements, the paper proves the error estimation of first-order and second-order time derivatives under the sup norm and L2-H1_0 norm. In addition, it is proved that this moving mesh scheme can maintain mass conservation and stability under certain conditions of discrete time step. Numerical experiments verify the error estimation and demonstrate that the proposed moving mesh method can overcome the oscillation problem caused by the Lagrange-Galerkin method on fixed meshes. The problems addressed in this paper are: 1. How to design an effective moving mesh method to improve the Lagrange-Galerkin method for convection-diffusion equations, especially for convection-dominated problems. 2. How to establish first-order and second-order time discretization schemes within the framework of moving mesh and prove their error estimations. 3. Ensure that the proposed moving mesh method improves the performance and efficiency of numerical simulations while maintaining mass conservation. 4. How to validate these theoretical results through numerical experiments and demonstrate the advantages of the new method in dealing with convection-dominated problems.
