Abstract:Over the past few years, The idea of edge computing has seen substantial expansion in both academic and industrial circles. This computing approach has garnered attention due to its integrating role in advancing various state-of-the-art technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) , 5G, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. In this chapter, we introduce computing paradigms for IoT, offering an overview of the current cutting-edge computing approaches that can be used with IoT. Furthermore, we go deeper into edge computing paradigms, specifically focusing on cloudlet and mobile edge computing. After that, we investigate the architecture of edge computing-based IoT, its advantages, and the technologies that make Edge computing-based IoT possible, including artificial intelligence and lightweight virtualization. Additionally, we review real-life case studies of how edge computing is applied in IoT-based Intelligent Systems, including areas like healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. Finally, we discuss current research obstacles and outline potential future directions for further investigation in this domain.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper discusses the applications and importance of edge computing in the Internet of Things (IoT). With the development of technologies such as IoT, 5G, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality, edge computing, as a new computing approach, has gained widespread attention. Edge computing deploys small servers near users to process and store data, reducing reliance on central data centers, lowering latency, and improving efficiency and security. The paper first introduces the computing paradigms of the IoT, including cloud computing, edge computing, and fog computing. It then discusses in detail the concepts of edge computing, such as cloudlet and mobile edge computing, which can handle the massive amount of data generated by IoT devices, reducing transmission time, bandwidth requirements, and latency. In addition, edge computing emphasizes real-time prediction, resource optimization, and advantages in terms of security and privacy. Next, the paper analyzes the edge computing-based architecture for the IoT, including three levels: the IoT layer, edge layer, and cloud layer, and discusses the functions and communication mechanisms of each layer. The applications of edge computing in the IoT can reduce decision-making latency, reduce network traffic, and achieve intelligence in fields such as healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. The paper also examines the practical applications of edge computing in case studies and points out current research challenges such as energy efficiency, security, and standardization, and proposes possible future research directions. Finally, the paper discusses how edge computing can improve efficiency through intelligent service delivery, local decision-making and processing, and how it can address resource and network limitations by reducing network burden and enhancing data processing speed.
