Abstract:This paper is concerned with integral representations and asymptotic expansions of solutions to the time-periodic incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow in the exterior of a rigid body that moves with constant velocity. Using the time-periodic Oseen fundamental solution, we derive representation formulas for solutions with suitable regularity. From these formulas, the decomposition of the velocity component of the fundamental solution into steady-state and purely periodic parts and their detailed decay rate in space, we deduce complete information on the asymptotic structure of the velocity and pressure fields.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the far - field behavior and integral representation formula of time - periodic incompressible viscous fluid flowing around a translating rigid body. Specifically, the author focuses on describing the motion of the fluid in the outer region, where the rigid body moves at a constant speed, and the fluid velocity \(v = v(t, x)\) and pressure \(p = p(t, x)\) satisfy the following system of equations:
\[
\begin{cases}
\partial_t v+(v\cdot\nabla)v - \nu\Delta v+\nabla p-\zeta\cdot\nabla v = f & \text{in }T\times\Omega,\\
\nabla\cdot v = 0 & \text{in }T\times\Omega,\\
v = v_b & \text{on }T\times\Sigma,\\
\lim_{|x|\to\infty}v(t, x) = 0 & \text{for }t\in T,
\end{cases}
\]
where:
- \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^3\) is an outer region;
- \(T:=\mathbb{R}/T\mathbb{Z}\) is the torus group related to the motion period \(T > 0\);
- The fluid has a constant viscosity \(\nu> 0\) and is subjected to a \(T\)-periodic external force \(f\);
- The rigid body \(O\) undergoes translational motion with a velocity \(\zeta\in\mathbb{R}^3\setminus\{0\}\);
- On the boundary \(\Sigma:=\partial\Omega\), the fluid velocity \(v_b\) is \(T\)-periodic.
### Main problems
1. **Derivation of integral representation formula**: Use the time - periodic Oseen fundamental solution to derive the integral representation formula of the solution satisfying the above system of equations.
2. **Asymptotic expansion of far - field behavior**: Study the behavior of the velocity field and pressure field of the solution in the far - field (i.e., far away from the rigid body), especially their decay rates.
### Research background
- For steady - state problems, there have been a large number of studies (such as [1, 15 - 21]), especially for different asymptotic behaviors in the wake region.
- For time - periodic problems, the research is more recent (such as [6, 9 - 12, 22 - 24, 27 - 29]), especially in terms of mathematical properties and asymptotic behaviors.
### Research methods
- Use the time - periodic Oseen fundamental solution to derive the integral representation formula.
- Decompose the velocity field into a steady - state part and a purely periodic part, and study their asymptotic behaviors respectively.
- Derive a complete asymptotic expansion, including the detailed decay rates of the velocity field and the pressure field.
### Main results
- Two different integral representation formulas are proposed (see Theorem 3.2).
- The asymptotic expansions of the velocity field and the pressure field are obtained (see Theorem 3.3), and their decay rates are analyzed.
- It is found that when the total flux \(\Phi\) is independent of time, the decay rates of the purely periodic velocity field and the pressure field are faster (see Theorem 3.6).
Through these studies, the author provides a useful theoretical basis for numerical simulation, especially when defining a bounded computational domain, appropriate boundary conditions need to be imposed.
