Abstract:With the continuous growth of large Knowledge Graphs (KGs), extractive KG summarization becomes a trending task. Aiming at distilling a compact subgraph with condensed information, it facilitates various downstream KG-based tasks. In this survey paper, we are among the first to provide a systematic overview of its applications and define a taxonomy for existing methods from its interdisciplinary studies. Future directions are also laid out based on our extensive and comparative review.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper is primarily dedicated to addressing the issue of generating effective summaries for large-scale Knowledge Graphs (KGs). Specifically, as the scale of KGs continues to grow, extracting concise and information-rich subgraphs from these complex structures has become an important research direction. The goal of this paper is to systematically overview existing methods and define an interdisciplinary research framework to explore the applications, methods, evaluation, and future directions in this field. The paper points out that, in the face of a large number of KGs on the web, both humans and machines face challenges in discovering and selecting suitable KGs for reuse, as KGs are often very large and cover a variety of topics. Therefore, generating concise descriptions that reflect the main content or coverage of the original KG becomes particularly critical. This compressed representation not only facilitates human understanding but can also be directly processed by machines without altering the original form. Additionally, the paper discusses the differences between static summaries (context-independent) and dynamic summaries (customized according to user needs) and their applications in different scenarios, such as KG profiling, query optimization, search, and exploration. Through this work, the paper aims to provide guidance and support for future research on extractive KG summarization.
