Abstract:Although blockchain technology was first introduced in 2008 and materialised in 2009, the early usage of blockchain were mainly limited to financial technologies, particularly cryptocurrencies. Later, blockchain became a widespread emerging technology, utilised in multifaceted sectors and applications. In fact, various new and innovative application of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies are still continuously being researched and explored. On the other hand, smart-contracts were first introduced in 1990s, however, it did not gain enough popularity until being integrated with blockchain technologies lately. The duo lately been seen as the key to many innovations in various industries and sectors. So, we took data from 1445 blockchain-related patent documents and tried to map out the historical and current trends in patenting activities in the blockchain field. This helps us get a better grasp of how blockchain technologies are evolving and being tracked. In addition to serving as an indicator of science and technology growth, patents are also used to judge the research potential and development of a particular technology.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the application and patent trends of blockchain technology and its integration with smart contracts in different fields. The study is based on 1445 blockchain-related patent documents and analyzes the thematic trends and development of blockchain technology using International Patent Classification (IPC) codes. The paper first introduces the development of blockchain technology from its early days of digital currency (such as Bitcoin) to its wide application in finance, Internet of Things, healthcare, supply chain, and other fields today. Although the concept of smart contracts was proposed as early as the 1990s, it only gained widespread attention after its integration with blockchain. In the research methodology section, the author selected and organized patent abstracts and claims to collect 1426 patent data from 2020 and 2021, and conducted data analysis and graphic display using Excel, Python, and Gephi. The results show that the number of blockchain patent applications has been increasing since 2016 but has declined after 2021. Major patent holders include Chinese companies such as Alibaba and Tencent, as well as non-Chinese companies like IBM and Microsoft. In the IPC classification, categories related to computing and electronic communication technologies are the most concentrated, but it was also noted that health informatics technologies are receiving more attention. Furthermore, the research found that companies with broad technological focus are not necessarily the main holders of blockchain patents. Through network diagrams, the author reveals the interrelationships between different IPC categories, which helps identify complementary technologies. These findings have implications for potential merger and acquisition activities and formulation of competitive strategies. The paper concludes that this is a preliminary study that provides a foundation for the technology map of the blockchain field, particularly in understanding technology priorities and potential competitive scenarios.
