Abstract:This paper studies the quantum computational complexity of the discrete logarithm (DL) and related group-theoretic problems in the context of generic algorithms -- that is, algorithms that do not exploit any properties of the group encoding. We establish a generic model of quantum computation for group-theoretic problems, which we call the quantum generic group model. Shor's algorithm for the DL problem and related algorithms can be described in this model. We show the quantum complexity lower bounds and almost matching algorithms of the DL and related problems in this model. More precisely, we prove the following results for a cyclic group $G$ of prime order. - Any generic quantum DL algorithm must make $\Omega(\log |G|)$ depth of group operations. This shows that Shor's algorithm is asymptotically optimal among the generic quantum algorithms, even considering parallel algorithms. - We observe that variations of Shor's algorithm can take advantage of classical computations to reduce the number of quantum group operations. We introduce a model for generic hybrid quantum-classical algorithms and show that these algorithms are almost optimal in this model. Any generic hybrid algorithm for the DL problem with a total number of group operations $Q$ must make $\Omega(\log |G|/\log Q)$ quantum group operations of depth $\Omega(\log\log |G| - \log\log Q)$. - When the quantum memory can only store $t$ group elements and use quantum random access memory of $r$ group elements, any generic hybrid algorithm must make either $\Omega(\sqrt{|G|})$ group operations in total or $\Omega(\log |G|/\log (tr))$ quantum group operations. As a side contribution, we show a multiple DL problem admits a better algorithm than solving each instance one by one, refuting a strong form of the quantum annoying property suggested in the context of password-authenticated key exchange protocol.

New quantum algorithms and quantum lower bounds

Abstract:The last decade witnessed a great surge of fruitful studies in the new paradigm of quantum computing. Remarkable progress has been made in all the areas including quantum algorithms, quantum complexity theory, quantum error-correcting code, quantum information theory, quantum cryptography and physical implementations of quantum computers. However, quantum algorithm design, probably the most important task in quantum computing, did not make as much progress as people expected. This thesis aims at both designing new quantum algorithms and studying why efficient quantum algorithms are so hard to design by proving many lower bounds on quantum query complexity for various problems. We first review (and generalize) known techniques for designing quantum algorithms and for proving quantum lower bounds. Using these techniques, we then study the quantum query complexity for many problems, including some specific problems such as Graph Matching and other natural graph properties, the general tuple search, and local search. We also study the lowest possible quantum query complexity for a class of functions as a whole, such as graph properties, circular functions, and functions invariant of a transitive permutation group, where tight results are given in all these cases. Finally for the quantum lower bounds techniques themselves, we study the main two techniques and show that they are incomparable in power. For the most widely used one, which has a lot of parameters to choose, we show limitations for it in terms of certificate complexity. This implies that we cannot use the method to prove better lower bounds for almost all known open problems in this area.
Generalized Uncertainty Principles for Quantum Cryptography

Abstract:We know the classical public cryptographic algorithms are based on certain NP-hard problems such as the integer factoring in RSA and the discrete logarithm in Diffie-Hellman. They are going to be vulnerable with fault-tolerant quantum computers. We also know that the uncertainty principle for quantum bits or qubits such as quantum key distribution or QKD based on the quantum uncertainty principle offers the information theoretical security. The interesting implication with the paradigm shifts from classical computing to quantum computing is that the NP-hardness used for classical cryptography may shift to the uncertainty principles for quantum cryptography including quantum symmetric encryption, post-quantum cryptography, as well as quantum encryption in phase space for coherent optical communications. This paper would like to explore those so-called generalized uncertainty principles and explain what their implications are for quantum security. We identified three generalized uncertainty principles offering quantum security: non-commutability between permutation gates, non-commutability between the displacement and phase shift operators for coherent states, and the modular Diophantine Equation Problem in general linear algebra for post-quantum cryptography.

Cryptography in the Common Haar State Model: Feasibility Results and Separations

Abstract:Common random string model is a popular model in classical cryptography. We study a quantum analogue of this model called the common Haar state (CHS) model. In this model, every party participating in the cryptographic system receives many copies of one or more i.i.d Haar random states. We study feasibility and limitations of cryptographic primitives in this model and its variants: - We present a construction of pseudorandom function-like states with security against computationally unbounded adversaries, as long as the adversaries only receive (a priori) bounded number of copies. By suitably instantiating the CHS model, we obtain a new approach to construct pseudorandom function-like states in the plain model. - We present separations between pseudorandom function-like states (with super-logarithmic length) and quantum cryptographic primitives, such as interactive key agreement and bit commitment, with classical communication. To show these separations, we prove new results on the indistinguishability of identical versus independent Haar states against LOCC (local operations, classical communication) adversaries.

Fundamental Limitations within the Selected Cryptographic Scenarios and Supra-Quantum Theories

Abstract:The following submission constitutes a guide and an introduction to a collection of articles submitted as a Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Gdańsk. In the dissertation, we study the fundamental limitations within the selected quantum and supra-quantum cryptographic scenarios in the form of upper bounds on the achievable key rates. We investigate various security paradigms, bipartite and multipartite settings, as well as single-shot and asymptotic regimes. Our studies, however, extend beyond the derivations of the upper bounds on the secret key rates in the mentioned scenarios. In particular, we propose a novel type of rerouting attack on the quantum Internet for which we find a countermeasure and benchmark its efficiency. Furthermore, we propose several upper bounds on the performance of quantum (key) repeaters settings. We derive a lower bound on the secret key agreement capacity of a quantum network, which we tighten in an important case of a bidirectional quantum network. The squashed nonlocality derived here as an upper bound on the secret key rate is a novel non-faithful measure of nonlocality. Furthermore, the notion of the non-signaling complete extension arising from the complete extension postulate as a counterpart of purification of a quantum state allows us to study analogies between non-signaling and quantum key distribution scenarios.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, the family of public-key cryptosystems, a fundamental breakthrough in modern cryptography in the late 1970s, has become an increasingly integral part of our communication networks. The Internet, as well as other communication systems, relies principally on the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, RSA encryption, and digital signatures using DSA, ECDSA, or related algorithms. The security of these cryptosystems depends on the difficulty of certain number-theoretic problems, such as integer factorization or the discrete log problem. In 1994 Peter Shor showed that quantum computers can solve each of these problems in polynomial time, thus rendering the security of all cryptosystems based on such assumptions impotent. A large international community has emerged to address this issue in the hope that our public-key infrastructure may remain intact by utilizing new quantum-resistant primitives. In the academic world, this new science bears the moniker Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

Abstract:While seemingly undesirable, it is not a surprising fact that there are certain problems for which quantum computers offer no computational advantage over their respective classical counterparts. Moreover, there are problems for which there is no `useful' computational advantage possible with the current quantum hardware. This situation however can be beneficial if we don't want quantum computers to solve certain problems fast - say problems relevant to post-quantum cryptography. In such a situation, we would like to have evidence that it is difficult to solve those problems on quantum computers; but what is their exact complexity? To do so one has to prove lower bounds, but proving unconditional time lower bounds has never been easy. As a result, resorting to conditional lower bounds has been quite popular in the classical community and is gaining momentum in the quantum community. In this paper, by the use of the QSETH framework [Buhrman-Patro-Speelman 2021], we are able to understand the quantum complexity of a few natural variants of CNFSAT, such as parity-CNFSAT or counting-CNFSAT, and also are able to comment on the non-trivial complexity of approximate-#CNFSAT; both of these have interesting implications about the complexity of (variations of) lattice problems, strong simulation and hitting set problem, and more. In the process, we explore the QSETH framework in greater detail than was (required and) discussed in the original paper, thus also serving as a useful guide on how to effectively use the QSETH framework.

Abstract:We analyze the security of quantum cryptography schemes for $d$-level systems using 2 or $d+1$ maximally conjugated bases, under individual eavesdropping attacks based on cloning machines and measurement after the basis reconciliation. We consider classical advantage distillation protocols, that allow to extract a key even in situations where the mutual information between the honest parties is smaller than the eavesdropper's information. In this scenario, advantage distillation protocols are shown to be as powerful as quantum distillation: key distillation is possible using classical techniques if and only if the corresponding state in the entanglement based protocol is distillable.

Abstract:Quantum computers, that may become available one day, would impact many scientific fields, most notably cryptography since many asymmetric primitives are insecure against an adversary with quantum capabilities. Cryptographers are already anticipating this threat by proposing and studying a number of potentially quantum-safe alternatives for those primitives. On the other hand, symmetric primitives seem less vulnerable against quantum computing: the main known applicable result is Grover's algorithm that gives a quadratic speed-up for exhaustive search. In this work, we examine more closely the security of symmetric ciphers against quantum attacks. Since our trust in symmetric ciphers relies mostly on their ability to resist cryptanalysis techniques, we investigate quantum cryptanalysis techniques. More specifically, we consider quantum versions of differential and linear cryptanalysis. We show that it is usually possible to use quantum computations to obtain a quadratic speed-up for these attack techniques, but the situation must be nuanced: we don't get a quadratic speed-up for all variants of the attacks. This allows us to demonstrate the following non-intuitive result: the best attack in the classical world does not necessarily lead to the best quantum one. We give some examples of application on ciphers LAC and KLEIN. We also discuss the important difference between an adversary that can only perform quantum computations, and an adversary that can also make quantum queries to a keyed primitive.

Limitations of the Macaulay matrix approach for using the HHL algorithm to solve multivariate polynomial systems

Abstract:Recently Chen and Gao~\cite{ChenGao2017} proposed a new quantum algorithm for Boolean polynomial system solving, motivated by the cryptanalysis of some post-quantum cryptosystems. The key idea of their approach is to apply a Quantum Linear System (QLS) algorithm to a Macaulay linear system over $\mathbb{C}$, which is derived from the Boolean polynomial system. The efficiency of their algorithm depends on the condition number of the Macaulay matrix. In this paper, we give a strong lower bound on the condition number as a function of the Hamming weight of the Boolean solution, and show that in many (if not all) cases a Grover-based exhaustive search algorithm outperforms their algorithm. Then, we improve upon Chen and Gao's algorithm by introducing the Boolean Macaulay linear system over $\mathbb{C}$ by reducing the original Macaulay linear system. This improved algorithm could potentially significantly outperform the brute-force algorithm, when the Hamming weight of the solution is logarithmic in the number of Boolean variables. Furthermore, we provide a simple and more elementary proof of correctness for our improved algorithm using a reduction employing the Valiant-Vazirani affine hashing method, and also extend the result to polynomial systems over $\mathbb{F}_q$ improving on subsequent work by Chen, Gao and Yuan \cite{ChenGao2018}. We also suggest a new approach for extracting the solution of the Boolean polynomial system via a generalization of the quantum coupon collector problem \cite{arunachalam2020QuantumCouponCollector}.

A security framework for quantum key distribution implementations

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) can theoretically achieve the Holy Grail of cryptography, information-theoretic security against eavesdropping. However, in practice, discrepancies between the mathematical models assumed in security proofs and the actual functioning of the devices used in implementations prevent it from reaching this goal. Device-independent QKD is currently not a satisfactory solution to this problem, as its performance is extremely poor and most of its security proofs assume that the user devices leak absolutely no information to the outside. On the other hand, measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD can guarantee security with arbitrarily flawed receivers while achieving high performance, and the remaining challenge is ensuring its security in the presence of source imperfections. So far, all efforts in this regard have come at a price; some proofs are suitable only for particular source imperfections, while others severely compromise the system's performance, i.e., its communication speed and distance. Here, we overcome these crucial problems by presenting a security proof in the finite-key regime against coherent attacks that can incorporate general encoding imperfections and side channels while achieving much higher performances than previous approaches. Moreover, our proof requires minimal state characterization, which facilitates its application to real-life implementations.

Abstract:We introduce a simple framework for estimating lower bounds on the runtime of a broad class of adiabatic quantum algorithms. The central formula consists of calculating the variance of the final Hamiltonian with respect to the initial state. After examining adiabatic versions of certain keystone circuit-based quantum algorithms, this technique is applied to adiabatic quantum algorithms with undetermined speedup. In particular, we analytically obtain lower bounds on adiabatic algorithms for finding k-clique in random graphs. Additionally, for a particular class of Hamiltonian, it is straightforward to prove the equivalence between our framework and the conventional approach based on spectral gap analysis.

Abstract:This thesis initiates the study of cryptographic protocols in the bounded-quantum-storage model. On the practical side, simple protocols for Rabin Oblivious Transfer, 1-2 Oblivious Transfer and Bit Commitment are presented. No quantum memory is required for honest players, whereas the protocols can only be broken by an adversary controlling a large amount of quantum memory. The protocols are efficient, non-interactive and can be implemented with today's technology. On the theoretical side, new entropic uncertainty relations involving min-entropy are established and used to prove the security of protocols according to new strong security definitions. For instance, in the realistic setting of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) against quantum-memory-bounded eavesdroppers, the uncertainty relation allows to prove the security of QKD protocols while tolerating considerably higher error rates compared to the standard model with unbounded adversaries.

Abstract:In classical cryptography, one-way functions (OWFs) are the minimal assumption, while it is not the case in quantum cryptography. Several new primitives have been introduced such as pseudorandom state generators (PRSGs), one-way state generators (OWSGs), one-way puzzles (OWPuzzs), and EFI pairs. They seem to be weaker than OWFs, but still imply many useful applications. Now that the possibility of quantum cryptography without OWFs has opened up, the most important goal in the field is to build a foundation of it. In this paper, we, for the first time, characterize quantum cryptographic primitives with meta-complexity. We show that one-way puzzles (OWPuzzs) exist if and only if GapK is weakly-quantum-average-hard. GapK is a promise problem to decide whether a given bit string has a small Kolmogorov complexity or not. Weakly-quantum-average-hard means that an instance is sampled from a QPT samplable distribution, and for any QPT adversary the probability that it makes mistake is larger than ${\rm 1/poly}$. We also show that if quantum PRGs exist then GapK is strongly-quantum-average-hard. Here, strongly-quantum-average-hard is a stronger version of weakly-quantum-average-hard where the probability that the adversary makes mistake is larger than $1/2-1/{\rm poly}$. Finally, we show that if GapK is weakly-classical-average-hard, then inefficient-verifier proofs of quantumness (IV-PoQ) exist. Weakly-classical-average-hard is the same as weakly-quantum-average-hard except that the adversary is PPT. IV-PoQ are a generalization of proofs of quantumness (PoQ) that capture sampling-based and search-based quantum advantage, and an important application of OWpuzzs. This is the fist time that quantum advantage is based on meta-complexity. Computable Model-Independent Bounds for Adversarial Quantum Machine Learning

Abstract:By leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics, QML opens doors to novel approaches in machine learning and offers potential speedup. However, machine learning models are well-documented to be vulnerable to malicious manipulations, and this susceptibility extends to the models of QML. This situation necessitates a thorough understanding of QML's resilience against adversarial attacks, particularly in an era where quantum computing capabilities are expanding. In this regard, this paper examines model-independent bounds on adversarial performance for QML. To the best of our knowledge, we introduce the first computation of an approximate lower bound for adversarial error when evaluating model resilience against sophisticated quantum-based adversarial attacks. Experimental results are compared to the computed bound, demonstrating the potential of QML models to achieve high robustness. In the best case, the experimental error is only 10% above the estimated bound, offering evidence of the inherent robustness of quantum models. This work not only advances our theoretical understanding of quantum model resilience but also provides a precise reference bound for the future development of robust QML algorithms.

Abstract:While recent work suggests that quantum computers can speed up the solution of semidefinite programs, little is known about the quantum complexity of more general convex optimization. We present a quantum algorithm that can optimize a convex function over an $n$-dimensional convex body using $\tilde{O}(n)$ queries to oracles that evaluate the objective function and determine membership in the convex body. This represents a quadratic improvement over the best-known classical algorithm. We also study limitations on the power of quantum computers for general convex optimization, showing that it requires $\tilde{\Omega}(\sqrt n)$ evaluation queries and $\Omega(\sqrt{n})$ membership queries.
Simple and tight device-independent security proofs

Abstract:Device-independent security is the gold standard for quantum cryptography: not only is security based entirely on the laws of quantum mechanics, but it holds irrespective of any a priori assumptions on the quantum devices used in a protocol, making it particularly applicable in a quantum-wary environment. While the existence of device-independent protocols for tasks such as randomness expansion and quantum key distribution has recently been established, the underlying proofs of security remain very challenging, yield rather poor key rates, and demand very high-quality quantum devices, thus making them all but impossible to implement in practice. We introduce a technique for the analysis of device-independent cryptographic protocols. We provide a flexible protocol and give a security proof that provides quantitative bounds that are asymptotically tight, even in the presence of general quantum adversaries. At a high level our approach amounts to establishing a reduction to the scenario in which the untrusted device operates in an identical and independent way in each round of the protocol. This is achieved by leveraging the sequential nature of the protocol, and makes use of a newly developed tool, the "entropy accumulation theorem" of Dupuis et al. As concrete applications we give simple and modular security proofs for device-independent quantum key distribution and randomness expansion protocols based on the CHSH inequality. For both tasks we establish essentially optimal asymptotic key rates and noise tolerance. In view of recent experimental progress, which has culminated in loophole-free Bell tests, it is likely that these protocols can be practically implemented in the near future.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel architecture (and several variants thereof) based on quantum cryptographic primitives with provable privacy and security guarantees regarding membership inference attacks on generative models. Our architecture can be used on top of any existing classical or quantum generative models. We argue that the use of quantum gates associated with unitary operators provides inherent advantages compared to standard Differential Privacy based techniques for establishing guaranteed security from all polynomial-time adversaries.

Abstract:In device-independent (DI) quantum protocols, the security statements are oblivious to the characterization of the quantum apparatus - they are based solely on the classical interaction with the quantum devices as well as some well-defined assumptions. The most commonly known setup is the so-called non-local one, in which two devices that cannot communicate between themselves present a violation of a Bell inequality. In recent years, a new variant of DI protocols, that requires only a single device, arose. In this novel research avenue, the no-communication assumption is replaced with a computational assumption, namely, that the device cannot solve certain post-quantum cryptographic tasks. The protocols for, e.g., randomness certification, in this setting that have been analyzed in the literature used ad hoc proof techniques and the strength of the achieved results is hard to judge and compare due to their complexity. Here, we build on ideas coming from the study of non-local DI protocols and develop a modular proof technique for the single-device computational setting. We present a flexible framework for proving the security of such protocols by utilizing a combination of tools from quantum information theory, such as the entropic uncertainty relation and the entropy accumulation theorem. This leads to an insightful and simple proof of security, as well as to explicit quantitative bounds. Our work acts as the basis for the analysis of future protocols for DI randomness generation, expansion, amplification and key distribution based on post-quantum cryptographic assumptions.
