Abstract:We establish spectral, linear, and nonlinear stability of the vanishing and slow-moving travelling waves that arise as time asymptotic solutions to the Fisher-Stefan equation. Nonlinear stability is in terms of the limiting equations that the asymptotic waves satisfy.

Abstract:In this note, we extend the detailed study of the linearized dynamics obtained for cnoidal waves of the Korteweg--de Vries equation in \cite{JFA-R} to small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations that are not subject to Benjamin--Feir instability. With the adapted notion of stability, this provides for such waves, global-in-time bounded stability in any Sobolev space, and asymptotic stability of dispersive type. When doing so, we actually prove that such results also hold for waves of arbitrary amplitude satisfying a form of spectral stability designated here as dispersive spectral stability.

Abstract:We prove the asymptotic stability of the high speed solitary waves to the Benjamin equation. This is done by establishing a Liouville property for the nonlinear evolution of the Benjamin equation around these solitary waves. To do this, inspired by Kenig-Martel-Robbiano 2011, we make use of the KdV limit of the Benjamin equation together with known rigidity property of the KdV flow. The main difficulties are linked to the presence of the Hilbert transform, that is a non-local operator, as well as the non-positivity of the quadratic part of the energy in the case $ \gamma<0$ which is the physical case.

Abstract:We establish the full asymptotic stability of solitary waves for the focusing cubic Schrödinger equation on the line under small even perturbations in weighted Sobolev norms. The strategy of our proof combines a space-time resonances approach based on the distorted Fourier transform to capture modified scattering effects with modulation techniques to take into account the symmetries of the problem, namely the invariance under scaling and phase shifts. A major challenge is the slow local decay of the radiation term caused by the threshold resonances of the non-selfadjoint linearized matrix Schrödinger operator around the solitary waves. Our analysis hinges on two remarkable null structures that we uncover in the quadratic nonlinearities of the evolution equation for the radiation term as well as of the modulation equations.

Abstract:The main concern of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic stability of stationary solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with the classical Boltzmann relation in a half line. We first show the unique existence of stationary solution with the aid of the stable manifold theory, and then prove that the stationary solution is time asymptotically stable under the small initial perturbation by the elementary energy method. Finally, we discuss the convergence rate of the time-dependent solution towards the stationary solution, and give a new condition to ensure an algebraic decay or an exponential decay. The proof is based on a time and space weighted energy method by fully utilizing the self-consistent Poisson equation.

Abstract:This Note investigates the properties of the traveling waves solutions of the nonlocal Fisher equation. The existence of such solutions has been proved recently in Berestycki et al. (2009) [3] but their asymptotic behavior was still unclear. We use here a new numerical approximation of these traveling waves which shows that some traveling waves connect the two homogeneous steady states 0 and 1, which is a striking fact since 0 is dynamically unstable and 1 is unstable in the sense of Turing.
Stability of Periodic Waves for the Defocusing Fractional Cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the spectral instability of periodic odd waves for the defocusing fractional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our approach is based on periodic perturbations that have the same period as the standing wave solution, and we construct real periodic waves by minimizing a suitable constrained problem. The odd solution generates three negative simple eigenvalues for the associated linearized operator, and we obtain all this spectral information by using tools related to the oscillation theorem for fractional Hill operators. Newton's iteration method is presented to generate the odd periodic standing wave solutions and numerical results have been used to apply the spectral stability theory via Krein signature as established in [22] and [23].

Abstract:We introduce a novel framework for the analysis of linear wave equations on nonstationary asymptotically flat spacetimes, under the assumptions of mode stability and absence of zero energy resonances for a stationary model operator. Our methods apply in all spacetime dimensions and to tensorial equations, and they do not require any symmetry or almost-symmetry assumptions on the spacetime metrics or on the wave type operators. Moreover, we allow for the presence of terms which are asymptotically scaling critical at infinity, such as inverse square potentials. For simplicity of presentation, we do not allow for normally hyperbolic trapping or horizons. In the first part of the paper, we study stationary wave type equations, i.e. equations with time-translation symmetry, and prove pointwise upper bounds for their solutions. We establish a relationship between pointwise decay rates and weights related to the mapping properties of the zero energy operator. Under a nondegeneracy assumption, we prove that this relationship is sharp by extracting leading order asymptotic profiles at late times. The main tool is the analysis of the resolvent at low energies. In the second part, we consider a class of wave operators without time-translation symmetry which settle down to stationary operators at a rate $t_*^{-\delta}$ as an appropriate hyperboloidal time function $t_*$ tends to infinity. The main result is a sharp solvability theory for forward problems on a scale of polynomially weighted spacetime $L^2$-Sobolev spaces. The proof combines a regularity theory for the nonstationary operator with the invertibility of the stationary model established in the first part. The regularity theory is fully microlocal and utilizes edge-b-analysis near null infinity, as developed in joint work with Vasy, and 3b-analysis in the forward cone.
Modulational Instability of Small Amplitude Periodic Traveling Waves in the Novikov Equation

Abstract:We study the spectral stability of smooth, small-amplitude periodic traveling wave solutions of the Novikov equation, which is a Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearities. Specifically, we investigate the $L^2(\mathbb{R})$-spectrum of the associated linearized operator, which in this case is an integro-differential operator with periodic coefficients, in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane. Our analysis shows that such small-amplitude periodic solutions are spectrally unstable to long-wavelength perturbations if the wave number if greater than a critical value, bearing out the famous Benmajin-Feir instability for the Novikov equation. On the other hand, such waves with wave number less than the critical value are shown to be spectrally stable. Our methods are based on applying spectral perturbation theory to the associated linearization.

Abstract:For the Schrödinger equation with a cubic-quintic, focusing-focusing nonlinearity in one space dimension, this article proves the local asymptotic completeness of the family of small standing solitary waves under even perturbations in the energy space. For this model, perturbative of the integrable cubic Schrödinger equation for small solutions, the linearized equation around a small solitary wave has an internal mode, whose contribution to the dynamics is handled by the Fermi golden rule.

Abstract:We review asymptotic stability of solitary waves for nonlinear dispersive equations set on the line. Our focus is threefold: first, the nonlinear Schrodinger equation; second, the notion of full asymptotic stability (which states that perturbations of a solitary wave decompose globally into a solitary wave and a decaying solution); and third, spectral methods. Besides this focus, we summarize the state of the art in a broader context, including nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations, the notion of local asymptotic stability, and virial methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the stability and uniqueness of generalized traveling wave solutions of lattice Fisher-KPP equations with general time and space dependence. We first show the existence, uniqueness, and stability of strictly positive entire solutions of such equations. Next, we show the stability and uniqueness of generalized traveling waves connecting the unique strictly positive entire solution and the trivial solution zero. Applying the general stability and uniqueness theorem, we then prove the existence, stability and uniqueness of periodic traveling wave solutions of lattice Fisher-KPP equations in time and space periodic media, and the existence, stability and uniqueness of generalized traveling wave solutions of lattice Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. The general stability result established in this paper implies that the generalized traveling waves obtained in many cases are asymptotically stable under well-fitted perturbation.

Abstract:In the paper we are concerned with the large time behavior of solutions to the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in the case when the potential function of the self-consistent electric field may take distinct constant states at $x=\pm\infty$. Precisely, it is shown that if initial data are close to a constant state with asymptotic values at far fields chosen such that the Riemann problem on the corresponding quasineutral Euler system admits a rarefaction wave whose strength is not necessarily small, then the solution exists for all time and tends to the rarefaction wave as $t\to+\infty$. The construction of the nontrivial large-time profile of the potential basing on the quasineutral assumption plays a key role in the stability analysis. The proof is based on the energy method by taking into account the effect of the self-consistent electric field on the viscous compressible fluid.

Abstract:We study the spectral stability of roll-wave solutions of the viscous St. Venant equations modeling inclined shallow-water flow, both at onset in the small-Froude number or "weakly unstable" limit $F\to 2^+$ and for general values of the Froude number $F$, including the limit $F\to +\infty$. In the former, $F\to 2^+$, limit, the shallow water equations are formally approximated by a Korteweg de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KdV-KS) equation that is a singular perturbation of the standard Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation modeling horizontal shallow water flow. Our main analytical result is to rigorously validate this formal limit, showing that stability as $F\to 2^+$ is equivalent to stability of the corresponding KdV-KS waves in the KdV limit. Together with recent results obtained for KdV-KS by Johnson--Noble--Rodrigues--Zumbrun and Barker, this gives not only the first rigorous verification of stability for any single viscous St. Venant roll wave, but a complete classification of stability in the weakly unstable limit. In the remainder of the paper, we investigate numerically and analytically the evolution of the stability diagram as Froude number increases to infinity. Notably, we find transition at around $F=2.3$ from weakly unstable to different, large-$F$ behavior, with stability determined by simple power law relations. The latter stability criteria are potentially useful in hydraulic engineering applications, for which typically $2.5\leq F\leq 6.0$.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that the KdV-Burgers equation with a monostable source term of Fisher-KPP type has small-amplitude periodic traveling wave solutions with finite fundamental period. These solutions emerge from a subcritical local Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the wave speed. Moreover, it is shown that these periodic waves are spectrally unstable as solutions to the PDE, that is, the Floquet (continuous) spectrum of the linearization around each periodic wave intersects the unstable half plane of complex values with positive real part. To that end, classical perturbation theory for linear operators is applied in order to prove that the spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave can be approximated by that of a constant coefficient operator around the zero solution, which intersects the unstable complex half plane.

On the exponential stability of uniformly damped wave equations

Abstract:We study damped wave propagation problems phrased as abstract evolution equations in Hilbert spaces. Under some general assumptions, including a natural compatibility condition for initial values, we establish exponential decay estimates for all mild solutions using the language and tools of Hilbert complexes. This framework turns out strong enough to conduct our analysis but also general enough to include a number of interesting examples. Some of these are briefly discussed. By a slight modification of the main arguments, we also obtain corresponding decay results for numerical approximations obtained by compatible discretization strategies.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the stability of non-monotone traveling waves to a nonlocal dispersion equation with time-delay, a time-delayed integro-differential equation. When the equation is crossing-monostable, the equation and the traveling waves both loss their monotonicity, and the traveling waves are oscillating as the time-delay is big. In this paper, we prove that all non-critical traveling waves (the wave speed is greater than the minimum speed), including those oscillatory waves, are time-exponentially stable, when the initial perturbations around the waves are small. The adopted approach is still the technical weighted-energy method but with a new development. Numerical simulations in different cases are also carried out, which further confirm our theoretical result. Finally, as a corollary of our stability result, we immediately obtain the uniqueness of the traveling waves for the non-monotone integro-differential equation, which was open so far as we know.

Abstract:We analyze the spectral and dynamical stability of solitary wave solutions to the Lugiato–Lefever equation on . Our interest lies in solutions that arise through bifurcations from the phase-shifted bright soliton of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. These solutions are highly nonlinear, localized, far-from-equilibrium waves, and are the physical relevant solutions to model Kerr frequency combs. We show that bifurcating solitary waves are spectrally stable when the phase angle satisfies , while unstable waves are found for angles . Furthermore, we establish asymptotic orbital stability of spectrally stable solitary waves against localized perturbations. Our analysis exploits the Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction method, the instability index count developed for linear Hamiltonian systems, and resolvent estimates.

Abstract:The paper fully answers a long standing open question concerning the stability/instability of pure gravity periodic traveling water waves—called Stokes waves—at the critical Whitham–Benjamin depth and nearby values. We prove that Stokes waves of small amplitude are, at the critical depth , linearly unstable under long wave perturbations. The same holds true for slightly smaller values of the depth , , depending on the amplitude of the wave. This problem was not rigorously solved in previous literature because the expansions degenerate at the critical depth. To solve this degenerate case, and describe in a mathematically exhaustive way how the eigenvalues change their stable-to-unstable nature along this shallow-to-deep water transient, we Taylor-expand the computations of Berti et al. (Arch Ration Mech Anal 247:91, 2023) at a higher degree of accuracy, starting from the fourth order expansion of the Stokes waves. We prove that also in this transient regime a pair of unstable eigenvalues depict a closed figure "8", of smaller size than for , as the Floquet exponent varies.

Abstract:We prove the asymptotic stability of a finite sum of well-ordered solitary waves for the Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation in dimensions two and three. We also derive a qualitative version of the orbital stability result, which will be useful for studying the collision of two solitary waves in a forthcoming paper. The proof extends the ideas of Martel, Merle and Tsai for the sub-critical gKdV equation in dimension one to the higher-dimensional case. It relies on monotonicity properties on oblique half-spaces and rigidity properties around one solitary wave introduced by Côte, Muñoz, Pilod and Simpson in dimension two, and by Farah, Holmer, Roudenko and Yang in dimension three.
