Abstract:Swept volume solid modeling has been applied to many areas such as NC machining simulation and verification, robot workspace analysis, collision detection, and CAD. But self-intersections continue to be a challenging problem in the boundary representation of swept volume solids. A novel algorithm is presented in this paper to trim self-intersection regions in swept volume solids modeling. This trimming algorithm consists of two major steps: (1) roughly detecting self-intersection regions by checking intersections or overlapping of the envelop profiles; (2) splitting the whole envelop surfaces of the swept volume solid into separate non-self-intersecting patches to trim global self-intersections, and to trim local self-intersections, dividing local self-intersecting regions into patches and replacing self-intersecting patches with non-self-intersecting ones. Examples show that our algorithm is efficient and robust.

Abstract:This paper addresses the long-standing problem of the unavoidable gaps that arise when expressing the intersection of two NURBS surfaces using conventional trimmed-NURBS representation. The solution converts each trimmed NURBS into an untrimmed T-Spline, and then merges the untrimmed T-Splines into a single, watertight model. The solution enables watertight fillets of NURBS models, as well as arbitrary feature curves that do not have to follow iso-parameter curves. The resulting T-Spline representation can be exported without error as a collection of NURBS surfaces.

Abstract:A new algorithm is proposed to recast Boolean operations of triangulated solids as a boundary conforming tetrahedral meshing problem. Different from those existing algorithms that merely maintain a conforming surface mesh, the new algorithm maintains a boundary conforming volume mesh at the same time of computing surface intersections. This volume mesh not only provides a background structure in helping the improvement of the efficiency of intersection computations, but also enables the development of a set of efficient and reliable flood-filling type procedures to extract the Boolean outputs. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm are investigated in further details, and various techniques are suggested to tackle these two issues accordingly. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated by performing suitable test cases and the results are compared well with those data obtained by other state-of-the-art codes.

Abstract:Computing the intersection between two parametric surfaces (SSI) is one of the most fundamental problems in geometric and solid modeling. Maintaining the SSI topology is critical to its computation robustness. We propose a topology-driven hybrid symbolic-numeric framework to approximate rational parametric surface-surface intersection (SSI) based on a concept of interval algebraic topology analysis (IATA), which configures within a 4D interval box the SSI topology. We map the SSI topology to an algebraic system's solutions within the framework, classify and enumerate all topological cases as a mixture of four fundamental cases (or their specific sub-cases). Various complicated topological situations are covered, such as cusp points or curves, tangent points (isolated or not) or curves, tiny loops, self-intersections, or their mixtures. The theoretical formulation is also implemented numerically using advanced real solution isolation techniques, and computed within a topology-driven framework which maximally utilizes the advantages of the topology maintenance of algebraic analysis, the robustness of iterative subdivision, and the efficiency of forward marching. The approach demonstrates improved robustness under benchmark topological cases when compared with available open-source and commercial solutions, including IRIT, SISL, and Parasolid.
Global Continuity Adjustment and Local Shape Optimization Technique for Complex Trimmed Surface Model

Abstract:Smoothly stitching multiple surfaces mainly represented by B-spline or NURBS together is an extremely important issue in complex surfaces modeling and reverse engineering. In recent years, a lot of progress has been made in smooth join of non-trimmed surface patches, while there has been seldom research on smoothly stitching trimmed surface patches together. This paper studies the problem of global continuity adjustment, damaged hole repair and local shape optimization for complex trimmed surface model, and presents a uniform scheme to deal with continuity adjustment of trimmed surfaces and geometric repair of local broken region. Constrained B-spline surface refitting technique and trim calculation are first utilized to achieve global G(1) continuity, and then local shape optimization functional is adopted to reduce fitting error and improve local quality of refitted surface patch. The proposed approach is applied to a discontinuity ship hull surface model with an irregular hole, and the result demonstrates the validation of our method. Furthermore, on the premise of global continuity, the proposed locally repairing damaged surface model provides a better foundation for following research work, such as topology recovery technique for complex surface model after geometric repair.
Large Surface Fitting and Trimming Techniques for N-sided Regions Filling

Abstract:A new method based on large surface fitting and topology recovery techniques was proposed to deal with the problem of N-sided regions filling in reverse engineering, which appears occasionally in the reconstruction of complex CAD models. Curves were constructed on the surrounding surfaces of the N-si-ded region, and subsequently the surrounding surfaces were trimmed to obtain a large quadrilateral region which including the N-sided region. Then, all the surrounding surfaces were evenly sampled and a B-spline surface was constructed, by interpolating the discrete boundary constraints and approximating all the points in the quadrilateral region. Finally, the B-spline surface was trimmed and all the surrounding sur-faces were refitted subjected to the constraints of points sampled from the B-spline surface. The final mod-el is approximate G~1 continuous in global sense, and it keeps the same topology as the original model.

Abstract:Intersections and discontinuities commonly arise in surface modeling and cause problems in downstream operations. Local geometry repair, such as cover holes or replace bad surfaces by adding new surface patches for dealing with inconsistencies among the confluent region, where multiple surfaces meet, is a common technique used in CAD model repair and reverse engineering. However, local geometry repair destroys the topology of original CAD model and increases the number of surface patches needed for freeform surface shape modeling. Consequently, a topology recovery technique dealing with complex freeform surface model after local geometry repair is proposed. Firstly, construct the curve network which determine the geometry and topology properties of recovery freeform surface model; secondly, apply freeform surface fitting method to create B-spline surface patches to recover the topology of trimmed ones. Corresponding to the two levels of enforcing boundary conditions on a B-spline surface, two solution schemes are presented respectively. In the first solution scheme, non-constrained B-spline surface fitting method is utilized to piecewise recover trimmed confluent surface patches and then employs global beautification technique to smoothly stitch the recovery surface patches. In the other solution scheme, constrained B-spline surface fitting technique based on discretization of boundary conditions is directly applied to recover topology of surface model after local geometry repair while achieving G 1 continuity simultaneously. The presented two different schemes are applied to the consistent surface model, which consists of five trimmed confluent surface patches and a local consistent surface patch, and a machine cover model, respectively. The application results show that our topology recovery technique meets shape-preserving and G 1 continuity requirements in reverse engineering. This research converts the problem of topology recovery for consistent surface model to the problem of constructing G 1 patches from a given curve network, and provides a new idea to model repairing study.

Abstract:Water entry problem is of great concern in engineering and military application,the loads imposed on a slamming ship,water entry of bullets,etc.The canonical problem related to interaction of gas,liquid and solid with splash crown and cavity formation,could be very complicated.The constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method is adopted as the base scheme for the flow solver,and tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) method is used for the free surface treatment.Process of water entry of circular cylinder and square cylinder is simulated and good agreement is obtained comparing with available experimental data.

Abstract:A new local consistent mending scheme for complex freeform surface model was proposed,by the combined use of global beautification technique for freeform surface model and N-sided hole filling method,which was based on discretization of boundary conditions and trimmed B-spline surface model.Firstly,the infinitesimal deformation technique of differentiable manifold was used to beautify the multiple surfaces approximated to point cloud subject to tight error globally,which could generate convergent G1 smooth B-spline surfaces and improve the shape of the model.Secondly,the local region containing N-patch corner was clipped off the original multiple surfaces,and then the trimmed area based on discretization of boundary conditions and the trimmed B-spline surface model was reconstructed to satisfy the approximate G1 continuity with adjacent surfaces while reflecting the feature trend of the original surface.Practical applications illustrate that the presented local consistent mending technique can achieve the global G1 continuity and the shape preserving in the complex surface modeling and reverse engineering,as well as provide a stable and reliable basis for further research on topology recovery technique.

Abstract:An algorithm of surface analysis was improved based on uniform triangulation of NURBS surface. The uniform triangulation algorithm of trimmed surface was realized using grid growing method. The field value computation of reflection line and highlight line and the construction of isoline were improved, which made the geometric meaning of field value more intuitionistic and the computation of field value for multiple parallel line light source more convenient. The application in reverse engineering software shows that the algorithm is rapid and stable, and the isoline can reflect the quality of surface.

Abstract:Copyright protection and authentication of digital contents have become a significant issue in the current digital epoch with efficient communication mediums such as Internet. Digital watermarking technique is now one of the hot research fields of copyright protection for CAD graphic data under the network environment. But there are very limited techniques available for that because of its high shape-preserving demand. Zero-watermarking is such a good means to deal with it and it has lots of advantages such as high capacity, good robustness and various functions. In this paper, we will discuss zero- watermarking algorithm for CAD models and eventually propose a watermarking-based digital rights management system that would test our techniques.

Abstract:Digital watermarking technique is becoming one of the hot research fields of copyright protecting, private detection for CAD graphic data under the network environment.But existing watermarking algorithms for polygonal meshes and their attributes can’t be applied to the majority of computer aided design(CAD) applications, for two major reasons.First, these CAD systems employ parametric curves and surfaces, not polygonal meshes, as their main shape defining primitives. Second, most CAD applications do not tolerate modifications of model topology and/or geometry that are introduced by existing watermarking algorithms.In this paper we propose a watermarking mechanism for CAD models, those employ non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) curves and surfaces as their main shape-defining primitives. This mechanism using relative knot insertion method embeds the watermarks generated by chaotic map into the NURBS primitives, and it exactly preserves the shapes. Since it is a semi-blind watermarking algorithm,we need just the original message to extract the watermarks from the watermarked models, and after comparing them with the original one we can tell whether there is the watermark in this CAD model upon the similarity. The experimental results shows that our watermarking mechanism is robust against most common attacks.
Topologically Correct Intersection Curves of Two Trimmed Quadrics with Tolerance Control

Abstract:Surface/surface intersection is a fundamental problem in Compute Aided Design and Geometric Modeling since it is essential to solid modeling, numerically controlled machining, feature recognition, computer animation, etc. In practical applications, quadric surfaces, which are the most basic type of surfaces, are typically bounded surfaces trimmed by a sequence of planes. In this paper,a robust algorithm is proposed for computing the intersection curve segments of two trimmed quadrics based on the parametric representation of the intersection curves of two quadrics. The proposed algorithm guarantees correct topology and ensures that the approximation errors of the end points of the intersection curve segments are less than a given tolerance. The error control is based on an effective solution to a set of polynomial inequality system using the root isolation technique. Some examples are presented to validate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:We describe a method that serves to simultaneously determine the topological configuration of the intersection curve of two parametric surfaces and generate compatible decompositions of their parameter domains, that are amenable to the application of existing perturbation schemes ensuring exact topological consistency of the trimmed surface representations. To illustrate this method, we begin with the simpler problem of topology resolution for a planar algebraic curve F ( x , y )=0 in a given domain, and then extend concepts developed in this context to address the intersection of two tensor-product parametric surfaces p ( s , t ) and q ( u , v ) defined on ( s , t )∈[0,1] 2 and ( u , v )∈[0,1] 2 . The algorithms assume the ability to compute, to any specified precision, the real solutions of systems of polynomial equations in at most four variables within rectangular domains, and proofs for the correctness of the algorithms under this assumption are given.

Abstract:Surface-surface intersection curve computation is a fundamental problem in CAD and solid modeling. Extracting the structure of intersection curves accurately, especially when there are multiple overlapping curves, is a key challenge. Existing methods rely on densely sampled intersection points and proximity-based connections, which are time-consuming to obtain. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on Delaunay triangulation to accurately extract intersection curves, even with sparse intersection points. We also introduce an intersection curve optimization technique to enhance curve accuracy. Extensive experiments on various examples demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:By applying displacement maps to slightly perturb two free-form surfaces, one can ensure exact agreement between the images in R3 of parameter-domain approximations to their curve of intersection. Thus, at the expense of slightly altering the surfaces in the vicinity of their intersection, a perfect matching of the surface trimming curves is guaranteed. This exact agreement of contiguous trimmed surfaces is essential to achieving topologically consistent solid model constructions through Boolean operations, and has a profound impact on the efficiency and reliability of applications such as meshing, rendering, and computing volumetric properties. Moreover, the control point perturbations require only the solution of a linear system for their determination. The basic principles of this approach to topologically consistent surface trimming curves are described, and example results from the implementation of a simple instance of the method are presented.
Parametric Surfaces Intersection Algorithm Based on Discrete Surfels

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel parametric surfaces intersection algorithm based on discrete surfels. First the parametric surfaces are sampled as point sampling surfaces. Each point is called a surfel with geometric information attached. Then the surfels are resampled adaptively by error analysis. Adaptive octree is built to accelerate the intersection operations. Finally, the intersection lines are resulted after sorting these discrete intersection points. Experiments show that our algorithm is effective and easy to implement. The precision of the intersection lines is controllable.

Abstract:Conventional methods for solving intersections between two offset parametric surfaces often include iteratively using computationally expensive SSI (surface/surface intersections) algorithm. In addition, these methods ignore the relations between the intersection curves of parametric surfaces with different offset distances. The algorithm presented in this paper, makes full use of the topological relations between different intersection loops and calculates intersection loops with the help of previously calculated intersection loops. It first pre-processes two parametric surfaces to obtain the characteristic points, called topology transition points (TTPs), which can help in the subsequent finding of the topologies of the intersection curves. Then these points are categorized into several distinct groups, and we can determine the calculation strategy for searching initial points by analyzing the properties of these TTPs on the surfaces. Hence, all intersection curves can be marched from initial points by the tracing algorithm. The proposed algorithm could calculate intersection curves robustly and effectively, and has been tested to be capable of overcoming the degenerate conditions such as loop and singularities leaking that occur frequently in conventional algorithms.

Abstract:Intersecting feature check and detection is a basic problem in feature-based CAD/CAM system. The usual approach checks whether two features are intersecting by performing Boolean operation between feature volumes. In order to avoid using very time-consuming Boolean operations, a new approach based on persistently naming mechanism of geometric entities is proposed. The approach is of high efficiency because it replaces Boolean operation by just checking names of features' faces.
