Abstract:In recent years, science simulations have become popular among educators due to their educational usefulness, availability, and potential for increasing the students' knowledge on scientific topics. In this paper, we introduce the implementation of a user-friendly simulation based on Easy Java/JavaScript Simulations (EJS) to study the problem of damped oscillations in U-tubes. Furthermore, we illustrate various advantages associated with the capabilities of EJS in terms of design and usability in order to encourage teachers to use it as an educational supplement to physics laboratories.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper describes a comprehensive modeling and experimental approach to studying damped vibrations in a U-tube using Easy Java/JavaScript Simulations (EJS). The main objective of the paper is to assist teachers and students in understanding physical phenomena, particularly the damped vibrations of liquids in a U-tube, by creating user-friendly simulations. The author points out that virtual laboratories can serve as supplements to physical experiments in situations where educational resources are limited, equipment is insufficient, or remote education is necessary. The paper first introduces the importance of virtual laboratories in education, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where they have become effective complements to traditional teaching methods. Then, the paper discusses in detail the theoretical framework of liquid vibrations in a U-tube, including Newton's laws of motion, and analyzes the vibration behavior under different damping conditions. The experimental section describes the actual setup of the U-tube and the use of the Tracker video analysis tool to collect data for comparison with the simulation results. Through the comparison between experiments and simulations, the author finds slight deviations between the experimental data and the theoretical curves, which may be attributed to neglecting complex factors such as nonlinear viscosity effects. The core of the paper lies in the use of the EJS software, which allows users to easily create physical simulations without the need for programming expertise, focusing on teaching instead. The author demonstrates how to design interactive simulations using EJS and provides detailed step-by-step instructions. Through EJS, students can adjust parameters and conduct experiments to better understand and master the physical laws behind damping systems. Finally, the paper discusses the advantages of such simulations, such as cost-effectiveness, accessibility, and suitability for remote learning, but also points out their limitations, such as the requirement for more programming knowledge for data logging and advanced functionalities. The author also shares positive feedback from students and teachers regarding the simulations and encourages the use of such resources in more courses to enhance students' understanding of physical phenomena.
