Abstract:These are a few historical remarks, addenda and references with comments on some topics discussed by Thurston in his notes ''The geometry and topology of three-manifolds''. The topics are mainly hyperbolic geometry, geometric structures, volumes of hyperbolic polyhedra and the so-called Koebe--Andreev--Thurston theorem. I discuss in particular some works of Lobachevsky, Andreev and Milnor, with an excursus in Dante's cosmology, based on the insight of Pavel Florensky. The final version of this paper will appear as a chapter in the book ''In the tradition of Thurston. III'', ed. K. Ohshika and A. Papadopoulos, Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper is a historical annotation, supplementary material, and reference for William Thurston's notes on the geometry and topology of three-dimensional manifolds. Author Athanase Papadopoulos discusses the topics covered in Thurston's notes, including hyperbolic geometry, geometric structures, the volumes of hyperbolic polyhedra, and the Koebe-Andreev-Thurston theorem. The paper is divided into six parts, covering the history of non-Euclidean geometry, Dante's cosmology, the origins of geometric structures, spheres and horospheres in hyperbolic space, Andreev's theorem, the volumes of polyhedra, and John Milnor's calculations of the volumes of hyperbolic polyhedra.
While Thurston's notes do not require a high level of mathematical background from readers, they are challenging to read and require time and spatial imagination. These notes have inspired many young mathematicians to pursue doctoral research and have since become important references in the field of geometric topology. The paper also mentions the work of Lobachevsky, Andreev, Milnor, and Pavel Florensky's understanding of hyperbolic space, as well as the correlation between Dante's cosmology and non-Euclidean geometry.
In summary, this paper aims to provide additional contextual information and advancements in related fields for Thurston's notes, aiding readers in better understanding and appreciating the profound impact of these notes in the field of three-dimensional manifold geometry and topology.
