Abstract:We present a study on asymptotically compatible Galerkin discretizations for a class of parametrized nonlinear variational problems. The abstract analytical framework is based on variational convergence, or Gamma-convergence. We demonstrate the broad applicability of the theoretical framework by developing asymptotically compatible finite element discretizations of some representative nonlinear nonlocal variational problems on a bounded domain. These include nonlocal nonlinear problems with classically-defined, local boundary constraints through heterogeneous localization at the boundary, as well as nonlocal problems posed on parameter-dependent domains.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop an Asymptotically Compatible (AC) discretization framework applicable to nonlinear variational problems and verify its effectiveness through Gamma - convergence theory. Specifically, the authors focus on how to construct a class of Galerkin finite - dimensional approximation methods for parameterized nonlinear variational problems, and these methods can maintain consistency with the solutions of the original problems when the parameters approach a certain limit value. This includes dealing with non - local nonlinear problems with classical local boundary conditions and non - local problems defined on parameter - dependent regions. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Extension of the AC framework**: For the first time, the AC framework is extended from linear problems to a large class of parameterized nonlinear variational problems, using Gamma - convergence as a mathematical tool. 2. **Application examples**: Two specific application examples of non - local nonlinear problems are provided, one of which involves the horizon parameter of heterogeneous localization, and the other is a problem defined on a region depending on the horizon parameter. These two examples have not been studied in previous literature, even in the linear case. 3. **Numerical discretization challenges**: In view of the complex interactions and possible singular solutions in non - local models, a reliable and robust numerical discretization scheme is proposed, which is an important technical challenge for simulating non - local models. Through the above work, the authors not only provide a new theoretical framework for non - local variational problems, but also demonstrate the broad application potential of this framework in practical problems, especially in the field of scientific computing where complex non - local effects need to be dealt with.
