Abstract:Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), as one of the most promising routes in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, offer various potential applications while also confront severe challenges due to near-term quantum hardware restrictions. In this work, we propose a framework to enhance the expressiveness of variational quantum ansatz by incorporating variational post-selection techniques. These techniques apply variational modules and neural network post-processing on ancilla qubits, which are compatible with the current generation of quantum devices. Equipped with variational post-selection, we demonstrate that the accuracy of the variational ground state and thermal state preparation for both quantum spin and molecule systems is substantially improved. Notably, in the case of estimating the local properties of a thermalized quantum system, we present a scalable approach that outperforms previous methods through the combination of neural post-selection and a new optimization objective.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to use variational post - selection technology to enhance the performance of variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) in the field of quantum computing, especially in the case of limited quantum hardware resources in the near future. Specifically, the paper focuses on improving the accuracy of variational quantum ground - state and thermal - state preparation by introducing variational post - selection technology. This includes: 1. **Enhancing the expressive power of variational quantum circuits**: By applying variational modules and neural network post - processing on auxiliary qubits, variational quantum algorithms can run on the current - generation quantum devices and can more effectively simulate the ground - state and thermal - state of quantum spin systems and molecular systems. 2. **Improving the accuracy of local property estimation**: For the local property estimation of thermalized quantum systems, the paper proposes a method that combines neural post - selection and a new optimized objective function, which surpasses previous methods in terms of accuracy. 3. **Overcoming the limitations of existing variational quantum algorithms**: Existing variational quantum algorithms are greatly limited in their expressive power due to the limitations of quantum hardware in the near future. By introducing variational post - selection technology, the paper aims to overcome these limitations and thus demonstrate quantum advantages in practical applications. In summary, the core problem of the paper is to improve the performance of variational quantum algorithms in ground - state and thermal - state preparation tasks by introducing variational post - selection technology, especially in the case of limited current quantum hardware resources.
