Abstract:The Powell Conjecture states that four specific elements suffice to generate the Goeritz group of the Heegaard splitting of the $3$-sphere. We present an alternative proof of the Powell Conjecture when the genus of the splitting is $3$, and suggest a strategy for the case of higher genera.

Abstract:The genus-$g$ Goeritz group is the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving self-homeomorphisms of the $3$-sphere that preserve the genus-$g$ Heegaard splitting of the $3$-sphere. In 1933, Goeritz found first a finite generating set of the genus-$2$ Goeritz group. The Powell Conjecture offers four specific elements that suffice to generate higher genus Goeritz group. We show that the reducing sphere complexes for the higher genus splittings of the $3$-sphere are all connected, and consequently the conjecture is true.

Abstract:In 1980 J. Powell proposed that five specific elements sufficed to generate the Goeritz group of any Heegaard splitting of $S^3$, extending work of Goeritz on genus $2$ splittings. Here we prove that Powell's conjecture was correct for splittings of genus $3$ as well, and discuss a framework for deciding the truth of the conjecture for higher genus splittings.

Abstract:A 33-manifold which admits a genus-22 reducible Heegaard splitting is one of the 33-sphere, S2×S1\mathbb {S}^2 \times \mathbb {S}^1, lens spaces and their connected sums. For each of those manifolds except most lens spaces, the mapping class group of the genus-22 splitting was shown to be finitely presented. In this work, we study the remaining generic lens spaces and show that the mapping class group of the genus-22 Heegaard splitting is finitely presented for any lens space by giving its explicit presentation. As an application, we show that the fundamental groups of the spaces of the genus-22 Heegaard splittings of lens spaces are all finitely presented.

Abstract:The sphere graph of $M_r$, a connect sum of $r$ copies of $S^1\times S^2$ was introduced by Hatcher as an analog of the curve graph of a surface to study the outer automorphism group of a free group $F_r$. Bestvina, Bromberg, and Fujiwara proved that the chromatic number of the curve graph is finite; bounds were subsequently improved by Gaster, Greene, and Vlamis. Motivated by the analogy, we provide upper and lower bounds for the chromatic number of the sphere graph of $M_r$. As a corollary to the prime decomposition of 3-manifolds, this gives bounds on the chromatic number of the sphere graph for any orientable 3-manifold.

Abstract:Under mild topological restrictions, we obtain new linear upper bounds for the dimension of the mod $p$ homology (for any prime $p$) of a finite-volume orientable hyperbolic $3$ manifold $M$ in terms of its volume. A surprising feature of the arguments in the paper is that they require an application of the Four Color Theorem. If $M$ is closed, and either (a) $\pi_1(M)$ has no subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface of genus $2, 3$ or $4$, or (b) $p = 2$, and $M$ contains no (embedded, two-sided) incompressible surface of genus $2, 3$ or $4$, then $\text{dim}\, H_1(M;F_p) < 157.763 \cdot \text{vol}(M)$. If $M$ has one or more cusps, we get a very similar bound assuming that $\pi_1(M)$ has no subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface of genus $g$ for $g = 2, \dots,8$. These results should be compared with those of our previous paper $The\ ratio\ of\ homology\ rank\ to\ hyperbolic\ volume,\ I$, in which we obtained a bound with a coefficient in the range of $168$ instead of $158$, without a restriction on surface subgroups or incompressible surfaces. In a future paper, using a much more involved argument, we expect to obtain bounds close to those given by the present paper without such a restriction. The arguments also give new linear upper bounds (with constant terms) for the rank of $\pi_1(M)$ in terms of $\text{vol}\,M$, assuming that either $\pi_1(M)$ is $9$-free, or $M$ is closed and $\pi_1(M)$ is $5$-free.

Abstract:We describe an example of a closed orientable 3-manifold with distinct distance three genus two Heegaard splittings. This demonstrates that the constructions of alternate genus two Heegaard splittings of closed orientable 3-manifolds described by Rubinstein and Scharlemann in their 1998 paper Genus Two Heegaard Splittings of Orientable 3-Manifolds, does not yield all alternate genus two splittings and must be augmented.

Abstract:The Castelnuovo bound conjecture, which is proposed by physicists, predicts an effective vanishing result for Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one. Previously, it is only known for a few cases and all the proofs rely on the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda. In this paper, we prove the Castelnuovo bound conjecture for any Calabi-Yau 3-folds of Picard number one, up to a linear term and finitely many degree, without assuming the conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda. Furthermore, we prove an effective vanishing theorem for surface-counting invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-folds of Picard number one. We also apply our techniques to study low-degree curves on some explicit Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Our approach is based on a general iterative method to obtain upper bounds for the genus of one-dimensional closed subschemes in a fixed 3-fold, which is a combination of classical techniques and the wall-crossing of weak stability conditions on derived categories, and works for any projective 3-fold with at worst isolated singularities over any algebraically closed field.

Chern Simons Theory and the volume of 3-manifolds

Abstract: We give some applications of the Chern Simons gauge theory to the study of the set ${\rm vol}(N,G)$ of volumes of all representations $\rho\co\pi_1N\to G$, where $N$ is a closed oriented three-manifold and $G$ is either ${\rm Iso}_e\t{\rm SL_2(\R)}$, the isometry group of the Seifert geometry, or ${\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3$, the orientation preserving isometry group of the hyperbolic 3-space. We focus on three natural questions: (1) How to find non-zero values in ${\rm vol}(N, G)$? or weakly how to find non-zero elements in ${\rm vol}(\t N, G)$ for some finite cover $\t N$ of $N$? (2) Do these volumes satisfy the covering property in the sense of Thurston? (3) What kind of topological information is enclosed in the elements of ${\rm vol}(N, G)$? We determine ${\rm vol}(N, G)$ when $N$ supports the Seifert geometry, and we find some non-zero values in ${\rm vol}(N,G)$ for certain 3-manifolds with non-trivial geometric decomposition for either $G={\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3$ or ${\rm Iso}_e\t{\rm SL_2(\R)}$. Moreover we will show that unlike the Gromov simplicial volume, these non-zero elements carry the gluing information between the geometric pieces of $N$. For a large class 3-manifolds $N$, including all rational homology 3-spheres, we prove that $N$ has a positive Gromov simplicial volume iff it admits a finite covering $\t N$ with ${\rm vol}(\t N,{\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3)\ne \{0\}$. On the other hand, among such class, there are some $N$ with positive simplicial volume but ${\rm vol}(N,{\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3)=\{0\}$, yielding a negative answer to question (2) for hyperbolic volume.

Abstract:An open book decomposition of a 3-manifold $M$ induces a Heegaard splitting for $M$, and the minimal genus among all Heegaard splittings induced by open book decompositions is called the \emph{open book genus} of $M$. It is conjectured by Ozbagci \cite{O} that the open book genus is additive under the connected sum of 3-manifolds. In this paper, we prove that a non-prime 3-manifold which has open book genus 2 is homeomorphic to $L(p,1)\#L(q,1)$ for some integers $p,q\neq\pm1$, that is, it has non-trivial prime pieces of open book genus 1. In particular, there cannot be a counter-example to additivity of the open book genus such that the connected sum has open book genus 2.

Abstract:We construct a subset of the space of stability conditions for any projective threefold with an ample polarization that satisfies a certain Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality to refine the result in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1410.1585" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1410.1585">arXiv:1410.1585</a>. Then, we demonstrate that the global dimension, as defined in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.00282" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.00282">arXiv:2008.00282</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1807.00469" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1807.00469">arXiv:1807.00469</a>, is 3 for any stability condition on $\mathbb P^3$ constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1410.1585" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1410.1585">arXiv:1410.1585</a>. Finally, we formulate a conjecture concerning the contractibility of a principal connected component of $\mathrm{Stab}(\mathbb P^3)$.

Abstract:In the generalized topological quantum field theory constructed by Andersen and Kashaev, invariants of 3-manifolds are defined given the combinatorial structure of a tetrahedral decomposition. Furthermore, a variant of the volume conjecture has been proposed in which the hyperbolic volume can be extracted from this invariant of the complementary space of the hyperbolic knot in an oriented $3$-dimensional closed manifold. We prove that the reformulated volume conjecture holds for the complementary space of the hyperbolic knot $7_3$ in $S^3$, given a specific tetrahedral decomposition.

Abstract:From the view of Heegaard splitting, it is known that if a closed orientable 3-manifold admits a distance at least three Heegaard splitting, then it is hyperbolic. However, for a closed orientable 3-manifold admitting only distance at most two Heegaard splittings, there are examples shows that it could be reducible, Seifert, toroidal or hyperbolic. According to Thurston's Geometrization conjecture, the most important piece of eight geometries is hyperbolic. Thus to read out a hyperbolic 3-manifold from a distance two Heegaard splittings is critical in studying Heegaard splittings. Inspired by the construction of hyperbolic 3-manifolds with a distance two Heegaard splitting [Qiu, Zou and Guo, Pacific J. Math. 275 (2015), no. 1, 231-255], we introduce the definition of a locally large geodesic in curve complex and furthermore the locally large distance two Heegaard splitting. Then we prove that if a 3-manifold admits a locally large distance two Heegaard splitting, then it is a hyperbolic manifold or an amalgamation of a hyperbolic manifold and a seifert manifold along an incompressible torus, i.e., almost hyperbolic, while the example in Section 3 shows that there is a non hyperbolic 3-manifold in this case. After examining those non hyperbolic cases, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for a hyperbolic 3-manifold when it admits a locally large distance two Heegaard splitting.

Heegaard splittings and the tight Giroux Correspondence

Abstract:This paper presents a new proof of the Giroux Correspondence for tight contact $3$-manifolds using techniques from Heegaard splittings and convex surface theory. We introduce tight Heegaard splittings, which generalise the Heegaard splittings naturally induced by an open book decomposition of a contact manifold. Via a process called refinement, any tight Heegaard splitting determines an open book, up to positive open book stabilisation. This allows us to translate moves relating distinct tight Heegaard splittings into moves relating their associated open books. We use these tools to show that every Heegaard splitting of a contact 3-manifold may be stabilised to a splitting associated to a supporting open book decomposition. Finally, we prove the tight Giroux Correspondence, showing that any pair of open book decompositions compatible with isotopic contact structures become isotopic after a sequence of positive open book stabilisations.

On a generalization of Cannon's conjecture for cubulated hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We show that cubulated hyperbolic groups with spherical boundary of dimension 3 or at least 5 are virtually fundamental groups of closed, orientable, aspherical manifolds, provided that there are sufficiently many quasi-convex, codimension-1 subgroups whose limit sets are locally flat subspheres. The proof is based on ideas used by Markovic in his work on Cannon's conjecture for cubulated hyperbolic groups with 2-sphere boundary.

Abstract:We introduce a new technique for finding lower bounds on the Heegaard genus of a 3-manifold obtained by gluing a pair of 3-manifolds together along an incompressible torus or annulus. We deduce a number of inequalities, including one which implies that $t(K_1# K_2)\geq \max {t(K_1),t(K_2)}$, where $t(-)$ denotes tunnel number, $K_1$ and $K_2$ are knots in $S^3$, and $K_1$ is $m$-small. This inequality is best possible. We also provide an interesting collection of examples, similar to a set of examples found by Schultens and Wiedmann, which show that Heegaard genus can stay persistently low under the kinds of gluings we study here.

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi–Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in ${\mathbb{P}^3}$ does not have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.
