Abstract:This paper explores two generalizations of the classical Aubin–Lions Lemma. First, we give a sufficient condition to commute weak limit and multiplication of two functions. We deduce from this criteria a compactness theorem for degenerate parabolic equations. Second, we state and prove a compactness theorem for noncylindrical domains, including the case of dual estimates involving only divergence-free test functions.

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:We prove an extrapolation of compactness theorem for operators on Banach function spaces satisfying certain convexity and concavity conditions. In particular, we show that the boundedness of an operator T in the weighted Lebesgue scale and the compactness of T in the unweighted Lebesgue scale yields compactness of T on a very general class of Banach function spaces. As our main new tool, we prove various characterizations of the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on such spaces and their associate spaces, using a novel sparse self-improvement technique. We apply our main results to prove compactness of the commutators of singular integral operators and pointwise multiplication by functions of vanishing mean oscillation on, for example, weighted variable Lebesgue spaces.

We highlight the fundamental role played by the function b generating the de Branges-Rovnyak space H(b). Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. This paper deals with global compactness and the multiplicity of positive solutions to problems of the type −ΔBNu − λu = a(x)|u|2∗−2u + f(x)in BN, u ∈ H1(BN), where [math] denotes the ball model of the hyperbolic space of dimension [math], [math], [math] and [math] ([math]) is a nonnegative functional in the dual space of [math]. The potential [math] is assumed to be strictly positive, such that [math], where [math] denotes the geodesic distance. We establish profile decomposition of the functional associated with the above equation. We show that concentration occurs along two different profiles, namely, hyperbolic bubbles and localized Aubin–Talenti bubbles. For [math] and [math], profile decomposition was studied in Bhakta and Sandeep [Poincaré–Sobolev equations in the hyperbolic space, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 44 (2012) 247–269]. However, due to the presence of the potential [math], an extension of profile decomposition to the present set-up is highly nontrivial and requires several delicate estimates and geometric arguments concerning the isometry group (Möbius group) of the hyperbolic space. Further, using the decomposition result, we derive various energy estimates involving the interacting hyperbolic bubbles and hyperbolic bubbles with localized Aubin–Talenti bubbles. Finally, combining these estimates with topological and variational arguments, we establish a multiplicity of positive solutions in the cases: [math] and [math] separately. The equation studied in this paper can be thought of as a variant of a scalar-field equation with a critical exponent in the hyperbolic space, although such a critical exponent problem in the Euclidean space [math] has only a trivial solution when [math] [math] and [math]

Abstract:The Aubin-Lions lemma and its variants play crucial roles for the existence of weak solutions of nonlinear evolutionary PDEs. In this paper, we aim to develop some compactness criteria that are analogies of the Aubin--Lions lemma for the existence of weak solutions to time fractional PDEs. We first define the weak Caputo derivatives of order $\gamma\in (0,1)$ for functions valued in general Banach spaces, consistent with the traditional definition if the space is $\mathbb{R}^d$ and functions are absolutely continuous. Based on a Volterra type integral form, we establish some time regularity estimates of the functions provided that the weak Caputo derivatives are in certain spaces. The compactness criteria are then established using the time regularity estimates. The existence of weak solutions for a special case of time fractional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant density and time fractional Keller-Segel equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$ are then proved as model problems. This work provides a framework for studying weak solutions of nonlinear time fractional PDEs.

Abstract:Strong compactness results for families of functions in seminormed nonnegative cones in the spirit of the Aubin-Lions-Dubinskiĭ lemma are proven, refining some recent results in the literature. The first theorem sharpens slightly a result of Dubinskiĭ (in Mat. Sb. 67(109):609–642, 1965) for seminormed cones. The second theorem applies to piecewise constant functions in time and sharpens slightly the results of Dreher and Jüngel (in Nonlinear Anal. 75:3072–3077, 2012) and Chen and Liu (in Appl. Math. Lett. 25:2252–2257, 2012). An application is given, which is useful in the study of porous-medium or fast-diffusion type equations.

Abstract:Hille's theorem is a powerful classical result in vector measure theory. It asserts that the application of a closed, unbounded linear operator commutes with strong/Bochner integration of functions taking values in a Banach space. This note shows that Hille's theorem also holds in the setting of complete locally convex spaces.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study when two composition operators on the Hilbert space of Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients belong to the same component or when their difference is compact. As a corollary we show that if a linear combination of composition operators with polynomial symbols of degree at most 2 is compact, then each composition operator is compact.

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three "test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if A and B are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and is equivalent to in some (precise) sense, is A equivalent to B ? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a "primitive" square root of is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root of . When "equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and A is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that A and B are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each is unitarily equivalent to , a "primitive" root of .

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a Minkowski-type inequality for weak Lebesgue space, which allows us to obtain a characterization of relative compactness in these spaces. Furthermore, we are the first to investigate the compactness results of commutators at the endpoint. The paper provides a comprehensive study of the compactness properties of commutators of Calderón-Zygmund operators in Hardy and $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ type spaces. Additionally, we provide factorization theorems for Hardy spaces in terms of singular integral operators in the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ space.

Abstract:The classical Steinhaus theorem (\cite{Steinhaus1920}) says that if $A \subset {\Bbb R}^d$ has positive Lebesgue measure than $A-A=\{x-y: x,y \in A\}$ contains an open ball. We obtain some quantitative lower bounds on the size of this ball and in some cases, relate it to natural geometric properties of $\partial A$. We also study the process $K_n =\frac{1}{2}(K_{n-1} - K_{n-1})$ when $K_0$ is a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and determine various aspects of its convergence to $Conv(K_1)$, the convex hull of $K_1$. We discuss some connections with convex geometry, Weyl tube formula and the Kakeya needle problem.
