Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $N$ a normal subgroup of $G$. We determine the structure of $N$ when the diameter of the graph associated to the $G$-conjugacy classes contained in $N$ is as large as possible, that is, is equal to three.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$. We attach to $N$ two graphs ${\Gamma}_G(N)$ and ${\Gamma}^{\ast}_G(N)$ related to the conjugacy classes of $G$ contained in $N$ and to the set of primes dividing the sizes of these classes, respectively. These graphs are subgraphs of the ordinary ones associated to the conjugacy classes ofG, ${\Gamma}(G)$ and ${\Gamma}^{\ast}(G)$, which have been widely studied by several authors. We prove that the number of connected components of both graphs is at most 2, we determine the best upper bounds for the diameters and characterize the structure of $N$ when these graphs are disconnected.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite $p$-separable group, for some fixed prime $p$. Let $\Gamma_p(G)$ be the common divisor graph built on the set of non-central conjugacy classes of $p$-regular elements of $G$: this is the graph whose vertices are the conjugacy classes of those non-central elements of $G$ such that $p$ does not divide their orders, and two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if the greatest common divisor of their lengths is strictly greater than one. The aim of this paper is twofold: to positively answer an open question concerning the maximum possible distance in $\Gamma_p(G)$ between a vertex with maximal cardinality and any other vertex, and to study the $p$-structure of $G$ when $\Gamma_p(G)$ has diameter three.

Landau's Theorem on conjugacy classes for normal subgroups

Abstract:Landau's theorem on conjugacy classes asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups, up to isomorphism, with exactly $k$ conjugacy classes for any positive integer $k$. We show that, for any positive integers $n$ and $s$, there exists only a finite number of finite groups $G$, up to isomorphism, having a normal subgroup $N$ of index $n$ which contains exactly $s$ non-central $G$-conjugacy classes. We provide upper bounds for the orders of $G$ and $N$, which are used by using GAP to classify all finite groups with normal subgroups having a small index and few $G$-classes. We also study the corresponding problems when we only take into account the set of $G$-classes of prime-power order elements contained in a normal subgroup.

We obtain some results about the ℑ n -normal subgroups and use them to study the structure of some groups.

Abstract:Let $n$ be a non negative integer, and define $D_n$ to be the family of all finite groups having precisely $n$ conjugacy classes of nontrivial subgroups that are not self-normalizing. We are interested in studying the behavior of $D_n$ and its interplay with solvability and nilpotency. We first show that if $G$ belongs to $D_n$ with $n \le 3$, then $G$ is solvable of derived length at most 2. We also show that $A_5$ is the unique nonsolvable group in $D_4$, and that $SL_2(3)$ is the unique solvable group in $D_4$ whose derived length is larger than 2. For a group $G$, we define $D(G)$ to be the number of conjugacy classes of nontrivial subgroups that are not self-normalizing. We determine the relationship between $D(H \times K)$ and $D(H)$ and $D(K)$. We show that if $G$ is nilpotent and lies in $D_n$, then $G$ has nilpotency class at most $n/2$ and its derived length is at most $\log_2 (n/2) + 1$. We consider $D_n$ for several classes of Frobenius groups, and we use this classification to classify the groups in $D_0$, $D_1$, $D_2$, and $D_3$. Finally, we show that if $G$ is solvable and lies in $D_n$ with $n \ge 3$, then $G$ has derived length at most the minimum of $n-1$ and $3 \log_2 (n+1) + 9$.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and N a normal subgroup of G . We prove that the knowledge of the sizes of the conjugacy classes of G that are contained in N and of their multiplicities provides information of N in relation to the structure of G . Among other results, we obtain a criterion to determine whether a Sylow p -subgroup of N lies in the hypercentre of G for a fixed prime p , and therefore, whether the whole subgroup N is hypercentral in G .

Abstract:A graph $\Gamma$ is said to be a semi-Cayley graph over a group $G$ if it admits $G$ as a semiregular automorphism group with two orbits of equal size. We say that $\Gamma$ is normal if $G$ is a normal subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(\Gamma)$. We prove that every connected intransitive one-matching semi-Cayley graph, with maximum degree three, over a finite abelian group is normal and characterize all such non-normal graphs.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group. A subset $S$ of $G$ is said to normally generate $G$ if $G$ is the normal closure of $S$ in $G.$ In this case, any element of $G$ can be written as a product of conjugates of elements of $S$ and their inverses. If $g\in G$ and $S$ is a normally generating subset of $G,$ then we write $\| g\|_{S}$ for the length of a shortest word in $\mbox{Conj}_{G}(S^{\pm 1}):=\{h^{-1}sh | h\in G, s\in S \, \mbox{or} \, s{^{-1}}\in S \}$ needed to express $g.$ For any normally generating subset $S$ of $G,$ we write $\|G\|_{S} =\mbox{sup}\{\|g\|_{S} \,|\,\, g\in G\}.$ Moreover, we write $\Delta(G)$ for the supremum of all $\|G\|_{S},$ where $S$ is a finite normally generating subset of $G,$ and we call $\Delta(G)$ the conjugacy diameter of $G.$ In this paper, we determine the conjugacy diameters of the semidihedral $2$-groups, the generalized quaternion groups and the modular $p$-groups. This is a natural step after the determination of the conjugacy diameters of dihedral groups, which were recently found by the first author (finite case) and by Kedra, Libman and Martin (infinite case).

Abstract:If $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $\chi$ is a non-linear irreducible character of $G$, then $\chi(1)\leq |G/Z(G)|^{\frac{1}{2}}$. In \cite{fernandez2001groups}, Fernández-Alcober and Moretó obtained the relation between the character degree set of a finite $p$-group $G$ and its normal subgroups depending on whether $|G/Z(G)|$ is a square or not. In this paper we investigate the finite $p$-group $G$ where for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $G'\not \leq N$ either $N\leq Z(G)$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$ and obtain some alternate characterizations of such groups. We find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n+1}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $N\leq Z(G)$, then $cd(G)=\{1, p^{n}\}$. We also find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with nilpotency class not equal to $3$ and $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$, then $cd(G) \subseteq \{1, p^{n-1}, p^{n}\}$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $N(G)$ be the set of its conjugacy class sizes excluding~$1$. Let us define a directed graph $\Gamma(G)$, the set of vertices of this graph is $N(G)$ and the vertices $x$ and $y$ are connected by a directed edge from $x$ to $y$ if $x$ divides $y$ and $N(G)$ does not contain a number $z$ different from $x$ and $y$ such that $x$ divides $z$ and $z$ divides $y$. We will call the graph $\Gamma(G)$ the conjugate graph of the group $G$. In this work, we will study finite groups whose conjugate graph is a set of points.

Abstract:The structure of the character degree graphs $\Delta(G)$, i.e. the prime graphs on the set $\mathrm{cd}(G)$ of the irreducible character degrees of a finite group $G$, such that $G$ is solvable and $\Delta(G)$ has diameter three, remains an intriguing area of study. However, a comprehensive understanding of these structures remains elusive. In this paper, we prove some properties and provide an infinite series of examples of this class of graphs, building on the ideas of Mark Lewis.

Abstract:Let N be a normal subgroup of a finite group G and consider the set cd(G|N) of degrees of irreducible characters of G whose kernels do not contain N. A number of theorems are proved relating the set cd(G|N) to the structure of N. For example, if N is solvable, its derived length is bounded above by a function of |cd(G|N)|. Also, if |cd(G|N)| is at most 2, then N is solvable and its derived length is at most |cd(G|N)|. If G is solvable and |cd(G|N)| = 3, then the derived length of N is at most 3.

Abstract:There exist well-known distance-regular graphs G of diameter 3 for which G(3) is a triangle-free graph. An example is given by the Johnson graph 1(8, 3) with the intersection array {15, 8, 3; 1, 4, 9}. The paper is concerned with the problem of the existence of distance-regular graphs G with the intersection arrays {78, 50, 9; 1, 15, 60} and {174, 110, 18; 1, 30, 132} for which G(3) is a triangle-free graph.
