Abstract:A formal derivation of the polarization correlations between the incident electron and the scattered electron is given for a general class of transition operators. In correspondence to the case of bremsstrahlung emission, three sum rules for the polarization correlations are predicted, which reduce to the known one for potential scattering. Further examples, including the 1_2^+ and 2_1^+ excitations of the 12C nucleus and a 1^- excitation of the 208Pb nucleus, are discussed and the validity of the corresponding sum rules is investigated.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the theoretical derivation of polarization in the electron - nucleus scattering process and its verification in specific nuclear excited states. Specifically, the paper mainly focuses on the following aspects:
1. **Derivation of Polarization - Related Parameters**: The paper first gives a formal derivation of the polarization - related parameters between the incident electron and the scattered electron for general - type transition operators. These parameters describe the polarization transfer between the incident electron and the scattered electron.
2. **Mathematical Model of Polarization and Scattering**: By introducing 15 polarization - related parameters, the paper extends the parameterization method of the scattering cross - section in the case of potential scattering, making it applicable to a wider range of electron - nucleus scattering processes.
3. **Physical Significance of Polarization and Scattering**: The paper explores the physical significance of these polarization - related parameters in different scattering situations, especially for elastic scattering and inelastic scattering (i.e., nuclear excitation).
4. **Experimental Verification of Polarization and Scattering**: Through specific examples, such as the specific excited states of \(^{12}\text{C}\) and \(^{208}\text{Pb}\) nuclei, the paper verifies the proposed polarization - related parameters and the corresponding sum rules.
### Main Contributions
- **New Polarization - Related Parameters**: 15 polarization - related parameters are proposed to describe the polarization transfer in electron - nucleus scattering.
- **Establishment of Sum Rules**: Three seven - term sum rules are established, which can be simplified to known three - term sum rules in specific cases (such as elastic scattering or specific nuclear excited states).
- **Comparison with Experimental Data**: The accuracy of the theoretical model is verified by experimental data, especially in the case of low - energy scattering and high - momentum transfer.
### Specific Applications
- **Dipole Excitation of Carbon - 12**: The \(1^+\) excited state (15.11 MeV) of \(^{12}\text{C}\) is studied, and the prediction of the theoretical model is verified by experimental data.
- **Dipole Excitation of Lead - 208**: The \(1^-\) excited state (5.512 MeV) of \(^{208}\text{Pb}\) is studied, and the influence of different final states on the scattering cross - section is explored.
- **Quadrupole Excitation of Carbon - 12**: The \(2^+\) excited state (4.439 MeV) of \(^{12}\text{C}\) is studied to further verify the applicability of the theoretical model.
### Conclusion
Through theoretical derivation and experimental verification, the paper successfully establishes a mathematical model related to polarization in the electron - nucleus scattering process and verifies the effectiveness of these models in specific nuclear excited states. This provides an important theoretical basis for understanding electron - nucleus interactions and guidance for further experimental research.
