Abstract:We prove the switching equivalence of the strongly regular polar graphs $NO^\pm(4m,2)$, $NO^\mp(2m+1,4)$, and $\Gamma(O^\mp(4m,2))$ plus an isolated vertex by giving an analytic description for them and their associated two-graphs.

Abstract:An edge-transitive graph $\varGamma $ is called alternatively connected if a subgroup G of the automorphism group of $\varGamma $ has two orbits on the arc set of $\varGamma $, and there exists an alternative walk (with respect to a given G-orbit on arcs) between every pair of vertices of $\varGamma $. Employing the standard double covers of digraphs, we give some basic properties of alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs. The main result of this paper is a reduction result on alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order. As an application of this result, we give a characterization for alternatively connected edge-transitive graphs of square-free order and valency 6. It is proved that such a graph is either a circulant or constructed from $\mathrm{PSL}(2,p)$.
Switching for Small Strongly Regular Graphs

Abstract:We provide an abundance of strongly regular graphs (SRGs) for certain parameters $(n, k, \lambda, \mu)$ with $n < 100$. For this we use Godsil-McKay (GM) switching with a partition of type $4,n-4$ and Wang-Qiu-Hu (WQH) switching with a partition of type $3,3,n-6$ or $4,4,n-8$. In most cases, we start with a highly symmetric graph which belongs to a finite geometry. Many of the obtained graphs are new; for instance, we find 16565438 strongly regular graphs with parameters $(81, 30, 9, 12)$ while only 15 seem to be described in the literature. We provide statistics about the size of the occurring automorphism groups. We also find the recently discovered Krčadinac partial geometry, thus finding a third method of constructing it.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be an $(s, k)$-polar graph if its vertex set admits a partition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ and $B$ induce, respectively, a complete $s$-partite graph and the disjoint union of at most $k$ complete graphs. Polar graphs and monopolar graphs are defined as $(\infty, \infty)$- and $(1, \infty)$-polar graphs, respectively, and unipolar graphs are those graphs with a polar partition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ is a clique. The problems of deciding whether an arbitrary graph is a polar graph or a monopolar graph are known to be NP-complete. In contrast, deciding whether a graph is a unipolar graph can be done in polynomial time. In this work we prove that the three previous problems can be solved in linear time on the classes of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible graphs, generalizing analogous results previously known for cographs. Additionally, we provide finite forbidden subgraph characterizations for $(2,2)$-polar graphs on $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible graphs, also generalizing analogous results recently obtained for the class of cographs.

Abstract:Local operations of combinatorial structures (graphs, Hadamard matrices, codes, designs) that maintain the basic parameters unaltered, have been widely used in the literature under the name of switching. We show an equivalence between two switching methods to construct inequivalent Hadamard matrices, which were proposed by Orrick [SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2008], and the switching method for constructing cospectral graphs which was introduced by Godsil and McKay [Aequationes Mathematicae, 1982].

Homomorphisms of (n,m)-graphs with respect to generalised switch

Abstract:The study of homomorphisms of $(n,m)$-graphs, that is, adjacency preserving vertex mappings of graphs with $n$ types of arcs and $m$ types of edges was initiated by Nešetřil and Raspaud [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 2000]. Later, some attempts were made to generalize the switch operation that is popularly used in the study of signed graphs, and study its effect on the above mentioned homomorphism. In this article, we too provide a generalization of the switch operation on $(n,m)$-graphs, which to the best of our knowledge, encapsulates all the previously known generalizations as special cases. We approach to study the homomorphism with respect to the switch operation axiomatically. We prove some fundamental results that are essential tools in the further study of this topic. In the process of proving the fundamental results, we have provided yet another solution to an open problem posed by Klostermeyer and MacGillivray [Discrete Mathematics 2004]. We also prove the existence of a categorical product for $(n,m)$-graphs on with respect to a particular class of generalized switch which implicitly uses category theory. This is a counter intuitive solution as the number of vertices in the Categorical product of two $(n,m)$-graphs on $p$ and $q$ vertices has a multiple of $pq$ many vertices, where the multiple depends on the switch. This solves an open question asked by Brewster in the PEPS 2012 workshop as a corollary. We also provide a way to calculate the product explicitly, and prove general properties of the product. We define the analog of chromatic number for $(n,m)$-graphs with respect to generalized switch and explore the interrelations between chromatic numbers with respect to different switch operations. We find the value of this chromatic number for the family of forests using group theoretic notions.

Abstract:It is known that for a fixed integer α ≥ 2,all but finitely many coconnected ones,the strongly regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue-α fall into two infinite families.Graham and Lovász raised the question of whether optimistic graphs exist and it was answered positively by Azarija.Here strongly regular graphs were classified with smallest eigenvalue-3,and the optimistic ones among them were determined.

Abstract:In this paper we give a new characterization of the dual polar graphs, extending the work of Brouwer and Wilbrink on regular near polygons. Also as a consequence of our characterization we confirm a conjecture of the authors on non-bipartite distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at most − k / 2 , where k is the valency of the distance-regular graph, in the case where c 2 ≥ 3 and a 1 = 1 .
Switching methods of level 2 for the construction of cospectral graphs

Abstract:A switching method is a graph operation that results in cospectral graphs (graphs with the same spectrum). Work by Wang and Xu [Discrete Math. 310 (2010)] suggests that most cospectral graphs with cospectral complements can be constructed using regular orthogonal matrices of level 2, which has relevance for Haemers' conjecture. We present two new switching methods and several combinatorial and geometrical reformulations of existing switching operations of level 2. We also introduce the concept of reducibility and use it to classify all irreducible switching methods that correspond to a conjugation with a regular orthogonal matrix of level 2 with one nontrivial indecomposable block, up to switching sets of size 12, extending previous results.

A note on $\bar{X}$-coloring and $\hat{A}$-coloring 4-regular graphs

Abstract:Let $\partial_H(u)$ be the set of edges incident with a vertex $u$ in the graph $H$. We say that a graph $G$ is $H$-colorable if there exist total functions $f : E(G) \rightarrow E(H)$ and $g : V(G) \rightarrow V(H)$ such that $f$ is a proper edge-coloring of $G$ and for each vertex $u \in V(G)$ we have $f(\partial_G(u))=\partial_H(g(u))$. Let $\bar{X}$ be the graph obtained by adding three parallel edges between two degree one vertices of the graph $K_{1,4}$. Let $\hat{A}$ be the graph obtained by adding two pendant edges to two different vertices of a triangle and then adding two edges between the degree two vertex and the two adjacent degree three vertices. Malnegro and Ozeki [Discrete Math. 347(3):113844 (2024)] asked whether every 4-regular graph with an even number of vertices and an even cycle decomposition of size 3 admits an $\bar{X}$-coloring or an $\hat{A}$-coloring and whether every 2-connected planar 4-regular graph with an even number of vertices admits such a coloring. Additionally, they conjectured that for every 2-edge-connected simple cubic graph $G$ with an even number of edges, the line graph $L(G)$ is $\bar{X}$-colorable. In this short note, we discuss two algorithms for deciding whether a graph $G$ is $H$-colorable. We give a negative answer to the two questions and disprove the conjecture by finding suitable graphs, as verified by two independent algorithms.

Abstract:It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of -reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that the same is true when restricted to some other superclasses of cographs, including -sparse and -extendible graphs (both of which extend -reducible graphs). We also present complete lists of -sparse and -extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and ( s , 1)-polarity, where s is a positive integer. In parallel to the case of -reducible graphs, all the -sparse minimal obstructions for these hereditary properties are cographs.

Abstract:The GM-switching, invented by Godsil and McKay, is a powerful method to construct cospectral graphs. In its simplest version, the method can be roughly described as follows: let A(G) be the adjacency matrix of a graph G on n vertices, let Q=diag(R,In−2m) be a block diagonal matrix, where R=1mJ−I2m is an orthogonal matrix of order 2m, J is the all-one matrix and Ik denotes the identity matrix of order k. If G satisfies certain conditions, then QTA(G)Q is an adjacency matrix of a graph G′ which is cospectral with G (with cospectral complements).
On equivalences of polarized partition relations

Abstract:The paper deals with two notions: polarized partition relations and product of generalized strong sequences. Strong sequences were introduced by Efimov in 1965 as a usefull tool for proving famous theorems in dyadic spaces, i.e. continuous images of Cantor cube. In this paper we introduce the notion of product of generalized strong sequences and give pure combinatorial proof that existence of product of generalized strong sequences is equivalent to polarized partition relations.

Achromatic colorings of polarity graphs

Abstract:A complete partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the vertex set such that there is at least one edge between any two parts. The largest $r$ such that $G$ has a complete partition into $r$ parts, each of which is an independent set, is the achromatic number of $G$. We determine the achromatic number of polarity graphs coming from generalized polygons. Our colorings of a family of unitary polarity graphs are used to solve a problem of Axenovich and Martin on complete partitions of $C_4$-free graphs. Furthermore, these colorings prove that there are sequences of graphs which are optimally complete and have unbounded degree, a problem that had been studied for the sequence of hypercubes independently by Roichman, and Ahlswede, Bezrukov, Blokhuis, Metsch, and Moorhouse.

Abstract:For two given graphs G1 and G2, the Ramsey number R(G1,G2) is the smallest integer N such that for any graph of order N, either G contains a copy of G1 or its complement contains a copy of G2. Let Cm be a cycle of length m and K1,n a star of order n+1. Parsons (1975) shows that R(C4,K1,n)≤n+⌊n−1⌋+2 and if n is the square of a prime power, then the equality holds. In this paper, by discussing the properties of polarity graphs whose vertices are points in the projective planes over Galois fields, we prove that R(C4,K1,q2−t)=q2+q−(t−1) if q is an odd prime power, 1≤t≤2⌈q4⌉ and t≠2⌈q4⌉−1, which extends a result on R(C4,K1,q2−t) obtained by Parsons (1976).
A dichotomy theorem for $Γ$-switchable $H$-colouring on $m$-edge coloured graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph in which each edge is assigned one of the colours $1, 2, \ldots, m$, and let $\Gamma$ be a subgroup of $S_m$. The operation of switching at a vertex $x$ of $G$ with respect to an element $\pi$ of $\Gamma$ permutes the colours of the edges incident with $x$ according to $\pi$. We investigate the complexity of whether there exists a sequence of switches that transforms a given $m$-edge coloured graph $G$ so that it has a colour-preserving homomorphism to a fixed $m$-edge coloured graph $H$ and give a dichotomy theorem in the case that $\Gamma$ acts transitively.

Equivalence between Erdős-Hajnal and polynomial Rödl and Nikiforov conjectures

Abstract:It is well-known that polynomial versions of theorems of Rödl and Nikiforov, as conjectured by Fox and Sudakov and Nguyen, Scott and Seymour imply the classical Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. In this note, we prove that these three conjectures are in fact equivalent, extending several previous particular results in this direction by Fox, Nguyen, Scott and Seymour; Nguyen, Scott and Seymour and Gishboliner and Shapira. We deduce that the family of string graphs satisfies the polynomial Rödl conjecture. We also derive analogous results for hypergraphs, tournaments, ordered graphs, and colored graphs.

On regular graphs with Šoltés vertices

Abstract:Let $W(G)$ be the Wiener index of a graph $G$. We say that a vertex $v \in V(G)$ is a Šoltés vertex in $G$ if $W(G - v) = W(G)$, i.e. the Wiener index does not change if the vertex $v$ is removed. In 1991, Šoltés posed the problem of identifying all connected graphs $G$ with the property that all vertices of $G$ are Šoltés vertices. The only such graph known to this day is $C_{11}$. As the original problem appears to be too challenging, several relaxations were studied: one may look for graphs with at least $k$ Šoltés vertices; or one may look for $\alpha$-Šoltés graphs, i.e. graphs where the ratio between the number of Šoltés vertices and the order of the graph is at least $\alpha$. Note that the original problem is, in fact, to find all $1$-Šoltés graphs. We intuitively believe that every $1$-Šoltés graph has to be regular and has to possess a high degree of symmetry. Therefore, we are interested in regular graphs that contain one or more Šoltés vertices. In this paper, we present several partial results. For every $r\ge 1$ we describe a construction of an infinite family of cubic $2$-connected graphs with at least $2^r$ Šoltés vertices. Moreover, we report that a computer search on publicly available collections of vertex-transitive graphs did not reveal any $1$-Šoltés graph. We are only able to provide examples of large $\frac{1}{3}$-Šoltés graphs that are obtained by truncating certain cubic vertex-transitive graphs. This leads us to believe that no $1$-Šoltés graph other than $C_{11}$ exists.

Chromatic polynomials of signed graphs and dominating-vertex deletion formulae

Abstract:We exhibit non-switching-isomorphic signed graphs that share a common underlying graph and common chromatic polynomials, thereby answering a question posed by Zaslavsky. For various joins of all-positive or all-negative signed complete graphs, we derive a closed-form expression for their chromatic polynomials. As a generalisation of the chromatic polynomials for a signed graph, we introduce a new pair of bivariate chromatic polynomials. We establish recursive dominating-vertex deletion formulae for these bivariate chromatic polynomials. Finally, we show that for certain families of signed threshold graphs, isomorphism is equivalent to the equality of bivariate chromatic polynomials.

Abstract:The family $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ consisting of graph-group pairs $(\Gamma, G)$, where $\Gamma$ is a finite, connected, 4-valent graph admitting a $G$-vertex-, and $G$-edge-transitive, but not $G$-arc-transitive action, has recently been examined using a normal quotient methodology. A subfamily of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ has been identified as `basic', due to the fact that all members of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ are normal covers of at least one basic pair. We provide an explicit classification of those basic pairs $(\Gamma, G)$ which have at least two independent cyclic $G$-normal quotients (these are $G$-normal quotients which are not extendable to a common cyclic normal quotient).
