Weyl Law and convergence in the classical limit for min-max nonlocal minimal surfaces

Abstract:In [CFS], the author and collaborators construct infinitely many nonlocal $s$-minimal hypersurfaces (via min-max methods) on any closed $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, obtaining an analogue of Yau's conjecture for $s\in(0,1)$. The present article proves a Weyl Law for the fractional perimeters of these hypersurfaces, and it shows their convergence as $s\to 1$ (for $n=3$) to smooth classical minimal surfaces. Our results are used in particular to give a novel proof of the density and equidistribution of classical minimal surfaces for generic metrics in three dimensions, showcasing nonlocal minimal surfaces also as a new approximation theory for the area functional.

On the minimization of the Willmore energy under a constraint on total mean curvature and area

Abstract:Motivated by a model for lipid bilayer cell membranes, we study the minimization of the Willmore functional in the class of oriented closed surfaces with prescribed total mean curvature, prescribed area, and prescribed genus. Adapting methods previously developed by Keller-Mondino-Rivière, Bauer-Kuwert, and Ndiaye-Schätzle, we prove existence of smooth minimizers for a large class of constraints. Moreover, we analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the energy profile close to the unit sphere and consider the total mean curvature of axisymmetric surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for computing conformal deformations in R 3 while minimizing curvature-based energies. Curvature-based energies serve as fundamental tools in geometry processing, essential for tasks such as surface fairing, deformation, and approximation using developable or cone metric surfaces. However, accurately computing the geometric embedding, especially for the latter, has been a challenging endeavor. The complexity arises from inherent numerical instabilities in curvature estimation and the intricate nature of differentiating these energies. To address these challenges, we concentrate on conformal deformations, leveraging the curvature tensor as the primary variable in our model. This strategic choice renders curvature-based energies easily applicable, mitigating previous manipulation difficulties. Our key contribution lies in identifying a previously unknown integrability condition that establishes a connection between conformal deformations and changes in curvature. We use this insight to deform surfaces of arbitrary genus, aiming to minimize bending energies or prescribe Gaussian curvature while sticking to positional constraints.

Abstract:This is the first paper dealing with the study of weak sharp minima for constrained optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds, which are important in many applications. We consider the notions of local weak sharp minima, boundedly weak sharp minima, and global weak sharp minima for such problems and establish their complete characterizations in the case of convex problems on finite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and Hadamard manifolds. A number of the results obtained in this paper are also new for the case of conventional problems in finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces. Our methods involve appropriate tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation on Riemannian and Hadamard manifolds developed and efficiently implemented in this paper.

Abstract:We study the convergence issue for the gradient algorithm (employing general step sizes) for optimization problems on general Riemannian manifolds (without curvature constraints). Under the assumption of the local convexity/quasi-convexity (resp. weak sharp minima), local/global convergence (resp. linear convergence) results are established. As an application, the linear convergence properties of the gradient algorithm employing the constant step sizes and the Armijo step sizes for finding the Riemannian $L^p$ ($p\in[1,+\infty)$) centers of mass are explored, respectively, which in particular extend and/or improve the corresponding results in \cite{Afsari2013}.

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Abstract:Motivated by experiments and formal asymptotic expansions in the physics literature, Maor and Shachar (J. Elasticity 134 (2019), 149-173) studied the behaviour of a model elastic energy of maps between manifolds with incompatible metrics. For thin objects they analysed the scaling of the minimal elastic energy as a function of the thickness. In particular they showed that for maps from a ball of radius h in an oriented Riemannian manifold to Euclidean space, the infimum of a model elastic energy per unit volume scales like the fourth power of h and after rescaling one gets convergence to a quadratic expression in the curvature tensor R(p), where p denotes the centre of the ball. In this paper we show the same result for general compact oriented Riemannian targets with R(p) replaced by a suitable difference of the curvature tensors in the target and the domain, thus answering Open Question 1 in the paper by Maor and Shachar. The result extends noncompact targets provided they satisfy a uniform regularity condition. A key idea in the proof is to use Lipschitz approximations to define a suitable notion of convergence.

Minimization of a Ginzburg-Landau functional with mean curvature operator in 1-D

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the minimization problem related to a Ginzburg-Landau energy functional, where in particular a nonlinear diffusion of mean curvature-type is considered, together with a classical double well potential. A careful analysis of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, equipped with natural boundary conditions and mass constraint, leads to the existence of an unique Maxwell solution, namely a monotone increasing solution obtained for small diffusion and close to the so-called Maxwell point. Then, it is shown that this particular solution (and its reversal) has least energy among all the stationary points satisfying the given mass constraint. Moreover, as the viscosity parameter tends to zero, it converges to the increasing (decreasing for the reversal) single interface solution, namely the constrained minimizer of the corresponding energy without diffusion. Connections with Cahn-Hilliard models, obtained in terms of variational derivatives of the total free energy considered here, are also presented.

Abstract:The existence of minimizers of the Canham--Helfrich functional in the setting of generalized Gauss graphs is proved. As a first step, the Canham--Helfrich functional, usually defined on regular surfaces, is extended to generalized Gauss graphs, then lower semicontinuity and compactness are proved under a suitable condition on the bending constants ensuring coerciveness; the minimization follows by the direct methods of the Calculus of Variations. Remarks on the regularity of minimizers and on the behavior of the functional in case there is lack of coerciveness are presented.

Abstract:We consider the problem of finding curves of minimum pointwise-maximum curvature, i.e., curves of minimax curvature, among planar curves of fixed length with prescribed endpoints and tangents at the endpoints. We reformulate the problem in terms of optimal control and use the maximum principle, as well as some geometrical arguments, to produce a classification of the types of solutions. Using the classification, we devise a numerical method which reduces the infinite-dimensional optimization problem to a finite-dimensional problem with just six variables. The solution types, together with some further observations on optimality, are illustrated via numerical examples.

A deterministic approach to Loewner-energy minimizers

Abstract:We study two minimization questions: the nature of curves $\gamma \subset \mathbb{H}$ which minimize the Loewner energy among all curves from 0 to a fixed $z_0 \in \mathbb{H}$, and the nature of $\gamma$ which minimize the Loewner energy among all curves that weld a given pair $x<0 <y$. The former question was partially studied by Yilin Wang, who used SLE techniques to calculate the minimal energy and show it is uniquely attained. We revisit the question using a purely deterministic methodology, and re-derive the energy formula and also obtain further results, such as an explicit computation of the driving function. Our approach also yields existence and uniqueness of minimizers for the welding question, as well as an explicit energy formula and explicit driving function. In addition, we show both families have a "universality" property; for the welding minimizers this means that there is a single, explicit algebraic curve $\Gamma$ such that truncations of $\Gamma$ or its reflection $-\overline{\Gamma}$ in the imaginary axis generate all welding minimizers up to scaling. While Wang noted her minimizer is SLE$_0(-8)$, we show the welding minimizers are SLE$_0(-4,-4)$. Our results also show sharpness of a case of the driver-curve regularity theorem of Carto Wong.

A condition for the Holder regularity of strong local minimizers of a nonlinear elastic energy in two dimensions

Abstract:We prove the local Hölder continuity of strong local minimizers of the stored energy functional \[E(u)=\int_{\om}\lambda |\nabla u|^{2}+h(\det \nabla u) \,dx\] subject to a condition of `positive twist'. The latter turns out to be equivalent to requiring that $u$ maps circles to suitably star-shaped sets. The convex function $h(s)$ grows logarithmically as $s\to 0+$, linearly as $s \to +\infty$, and satisfies $h(s)=+\infty$ if $s \leq 0$. These properties encode a constitutive condition which ensures that material does not interpenetrate during a deformation and is one of the principal obstacles to proving the regularity of local or global minimizers. The main innovation is to prove that if a local minimizer has positive twist a.e\frenchspacing. on a ball then an Euler-Lagrange type inequality holds and a Caccioppoli inequality can be derived from it. The claimed Hölder continuity then follows by adapting some well-known elliptic regularity theory. We also demonstrate the regularizing effect that the term $\int_{\om} h(\det \nabla u)\,dx$ can have by analysing the regularity of local minimizers in the class of `shear maps'. In this setting a more easily verifiable condition than that of positive twist is imposed, with the result that local minimizers are Hölder continuous.

Abstract:We study the problem of finding curves of minimum pointwise-maximum arc-length derivative of curvature, here simply called curves of minimax spirality, among planar curves of fixed length with prescribed endpoints and tangents at the endpoints. We consider the case when simple bounds (constraints) are also imposed on the curvature along the curve. The curvature at the endpoints may or may not be specified. We prove via optimal control theory that the optimal curve is some concatenation of Euler spiral arcs, circular arcs, and straight line segments. When the curvature is not constrained (or when the curvature constraint does not become active), an optimal curve is only made up of a concatenation of Euler spiral arcs, unless the oriented endpoints lie in a line segment or a circular arc of the prescribed length, in which case the whole curve is either a straight line segment or a circular arc segment, respectively. We propose numerical methods and illustrate these methods and the results by means of three example problems of finding such curves.
