Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:We consider a mass conserved Allen-Cahn equation $u_t=\Delta u+ \e^{-2} (f(u)-\e\lambda(t))$ in a bounded domain with no flux boundary condition, where $\e\lambda(t)$ is the average of $f(u(\cdot,t))$ and $-f$ is the derivative of a double equal well potential. Given a smooth hypersurface $\gamma_0$ contained in the domain, we show that the solution $u^\e$ with appropriate initial data approaches, as $\e\searrow0$, to a limit which takes only two values, with the jump occurring at the hypersurface obtained from the volume preserving mean curvature flow starting from $\gamma_0$.

Abstract:We prove convergence of the nonlocal Allen-Cahn equation to mean curvature flow in the sharp interface limit, in the situation when the parameter corresponding to the kernel goes to zero fast enough with respect to the diffuse interface thickness. The analysis is done in the case of a $W^{1,1}$-kernel, under periodic boundary conditions and in both two and three space dimensions. We use the approximate solution and spectral estimate from the local case, and combine the latter with an $L^2$-estimate for the difference of the nonlocal operator and the negative Laplacian from Abels, Hurm <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.02264" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.02264">arXiv:2307.02264</a>. To this end, we prove a nonlocal Ehrling-type inequality to show uniform $H^3$-estimates for the nonlocal solutions.

A penalized Allen-Cahn equation for the mean curvature flow of thin structures

Abstract:This paper addresses the approximation of the mean curvature flow of thin structures for which classical phase field methods are not suitable. By thin structures, we mean surfaces that are not domain boundaries, typically higher codimension objects such as 1D curves in 3D, i.e. filaments, or soap films spanning a boundary curve. To approximate the mean curvature flow of such surfaces, we consider a small thickening and we apply to the thickened set an evolution model that combines the classical Allen-Cahn equation with a penalty term that takes on larger values around the skeleton of the set. The novelty of our approach lies in the definition of this penalty term that guarantees a minimal thickness of the evolving set and prevents it from disappearing unexpectedly. We prove a few theoretical properties of our model, provide examples showing the connection with higher codimension mean curvature flow, and introduce a quasi-static numerical scheme with explicit integration of the penalty term. We illustrate the numerical efficiency of the model with accurate approximations of filament structures evolving by mean curvature flow, and we also illustrate its ability to find complex 3D approximations of solutions to the Steiner problem or the Plateau problem.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of a geometric flow whose law involves a singular integral operator. This operator is used to define a non-local mean curvature of a set. Moreover the associated flow appears in two important applications: dislocation dynamics and phase field theory for fractional reaction-diffusion equations. It is defined by using the level set method. The main results of this paper are: on one hand, the proper level set formulation of the geometric flow; on the other hand, stability and comparison results for the geometric equation associated with the flow.

Abstract:A time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation with volume constraint is first proposed by introducing a nonlocal time-dependent Lagrange multiplier. Adaptive linear second-order energy stable schemes are developed for the proposed model by combining invariant energy quadratization and scalar auxiliary variable approaches with the recent L1$^{+}$ formula. The new developed methods are proved to be volume-preserving and unconditionally energy stable on arbitrary nonuniform time meshes. The accelerated algorithm and adaptive time strategy are employed in numerical implement. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms are computationally efficient in multi-scale simulations, and appropriate for accurately resolving the intrinsically initial singularity of solution and for efficiently capturing the fast dynamics away initial time.

Abstract:The present study proposes a numerical method to solve the time-fractional Allen–Cahn equation. The Grunwald–Letnikov formula is employed for discretizing the time-fractional derivative, whereas the finite difference scheme is used for spatial approximation. Theoretical analysis indicates that the proposed method is stable in the discrete L2 -norm and the numerical results satisfy the energy dissipation property. Numerical simulations are conducted for validation of the proposed method. It has been observed that the solution profile approaches equilibrium for various fractional-order values in the range of (0,1) . Moreover, the fractional order values have a significant effect on the solution stabilization rate which is faster for larger values and slower for the smaller values.

Abstract:We consider a variational model for heterogeneous phase separation, based on a diffuse interface energy with moving wells. Our main result identifies the asymptotic behavior of the first variation of the phase field energies as the width of the diffuse interface vanishes. This convergence result allows us to deduce a Gibbs-Thomson relation for heterogeneous surface tensions. Proceeding from this information, we prove that (weak) solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation with space dependent potential converge to a BV solution of weighted mean curvature flow, under an energy convergence hypothesis. Additionally, relying on the relative energy technique, we establish a weak-strong uniqueness principle for solutions of weighted mean curvature flow.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the temporal evolution of arbitrary, simple, closed two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) interfaces under motion driven by mean curvature up to a singularity. To facilitate this investigation, we propose a novel Allen–Cahn (AC) model with a time-dependent interfacial thickness parameter. The original AC equation was developed to model the phase separation of a binary mixture. It is well known that a level set or interface of the solution of the AC equation obeys the dynamics of motion by curvature as the interfacial thickness parameter approaches zero. Generally, it is difficult to find a closed-form analytic solution of the AC equation with any initial condition. Therefore, we need to estimate the solution of the AC equation through computational approaches such as finite difference method (FDM), finite element method (FEM), Fourier-spectral method (FSM), and finite volume method (FVM). Any simple, closed curves and convex surfaces eventually shrink to a point due to motion by mean curvature. Therefore, it becomes necessary to use adaptive mesh techniques to resolve this small size problem. However, even though we use adaptive mesh techniques, we still confront the relatively thick interfacial transition layer when the curves or interfaces become very small. To avoid this problem, we can start with a very small mesh size for a small value of the interfacial parameter, which results in an extremely high computational cost even when using adaptive mesh techniques. To resolve these issues, we present the AC equation with a time-dependent interfacial parameter and develop an adaptive mesh refinement system. To show the superior performance of the proposed mathematical equation and its computational algorithm, we present various numerical experiments and investigate the motion by mean curvature up to the singularity of curves in 2D space and interfaces in 3D space.

Abstract:A time-fractional Allen-Cahn problem is considered, where the spatial domain Ω is a bounded subset of $\mathbb {R}^{d}$ for some d ∈{1,2,3}. New bounds on certain derivatives of the solution are derived. These are used in the analysis of a numerical method (L1 discretization of the temporal fractional derivative on a graded mesh, with a standard finite element discretization of the spatial diffusion term, and Newton linearization of the nonlinear driving term), showing that the computed solution achieves the optimal rate of convergence in the Sobolev H1(Ω) norm. (Previous papers considered only convergence in L2(Ω).) Numerical results confirm our theoretical findings.

Abstract:We characterize the long time behaviour of a discrete-in-time approximation of the volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow. In particular, we prove that the discrete flow starting from any bounded set of finite fractional perimeter converges exponentially fast to a single ball. As an intermediate result we establish a quantitative Alexandrov type estimate in the fractional setting for normal deformations of a ball. Finally, we provide existence for flat flows as limit points of the discrete flow when the time discretization parameter tends to zero.

Abstract:This paper studies finite element approximations of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with gradient-type multiplicative noises that are white in time and correlated in space. The sharp interface limit as the parameter $\epsilon \rightarrow 0$ of the stochastic equation formally approximates a stochastic mean curvature flow which is described by a stochastically perturbed geometric law of the deterministic mean curvature flow. Both the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation and the stochastic mean curvature flow arise from materials science, fluid mechanics and cell biology applications. Two fully discrete finite element methods which are based on different time-stepping strategies for the nonlinear term are proposed. Strong convergence with sharp rates for both fully discrete finite element methods is proved. This is done with a crucial help of the H\"{o}lder continuity in time with respect to the spatial $L^2$-norm and $H^1$-seminorm for the strong solution of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation, which are key technical lemmas proved in paper. It also relies on the fact that high moments of the strong solution are bounded in various spatial and temporal norms. Numerical experiments are provided to gauge the performance of the proposed fully discrete finite element methods and to study the interplay of the geometric evolution and gradient-type noises.
Highly efficient and energy dissipative schemes for the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze a time-stepping method for the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation. The key property of the proposed method is its unconditional stability for general meshes, including the graded mesh commonly used for this type of equations. The unconditional stability is proved through establishing a discrete nonlocal free energy dispassion law, which is also true for the continuous problem. The main idea used in the analysis is to split the time fractional derivative into two parts: a local part and a history part, which are discretized by the well known L1, L1-CN, and $L1^{+}$-CN schemes. Then an extended auxiliary variable approach is used to deal with the nonlinear and history term. The main contributions of the paper are: First, it is found that the time fractional Allen-Chan equation is a dissipative system related to a nonlocal free energy. Second, we construct efficient time stepping schemes satisfying the same dissipation law at the discrete level. In particular, we prove that the proposed schemes are unconditionally stable for quite general meshes. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed method is verified by a series of numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper we prove an analogue of the Brakke's $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem for the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation. In particular, we show uniform $C^{2,\alpha}$ regularity for the transition layers converging to smooth mean curvature flows as $\varepsilon\rightarrow0$. The proof utilises Allen-Cahn versions of the monotonicity formula, parabolic Lipschitz approximation and blowups. A corresponding gap theorem for entire eternal solutions of the parabolic Allen-Cahn is also obtained. As an application of the regularity theorem, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Ilmanen that there is no cancellation in $\mathbf {BV}$ convergence in the mean convex setting.

We prove that the limit interface is the mean curvature flow with the transport term, given the condition that the energy is uniformly bounded with respect to time. Using this result, we show the existence of the mean curvature flow with a gradient vector field as the transport term.

Abstract:This work considers the two-dimensional Allen-Cahn equation $$ \partial_t u = \frac{1}{2}\Delta u + \mathfrak{m}\, u -u^3\;, \quad u(0,x)= \eta (x)\;, \qquad \forall (t,x) \in [0, \infty) \times \mathbb{R}^{2} \;, $$ where the initial condition $ \eta $ is a two-dimensional white noise, which lies in the scaling critical space of initial data to the equation. In a weak coupling scaling, we establish a Gaussian limit with nontrivial size of fluctuations, thus casting the nonlinearity as marginally relevant. The result builds on a precise analysis of the Wild expansion of the solution and an understanding of the underlying stochastic and combinatorial structure. This gives rise to a representation for the limiting variance in terms of Butcher series associated to the solution of an ordinary differential equation.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the fractional Allen--Cahn energy functional in bounded domains with prescribed Dirichlet boundary conditions. When the fractional power $s \in (0,\frac12)$, we establish establish the first-order asymptotic development up to the boundary in the sense of $\Gamma$-convergence. In particular, we prove that the first-order term is the nonlocal minimal surface functional. Also, we show that, in general, the second-order term is not properly defined and intermediate orders may have to be taken into account. For $s \in [\frac12,1)$, we focus on the one-dimensional case and we prove that the first order term is the classical perimeter functional plus a penalization on the boundary. Towards this end, we establish existence of minimizers to a corresponding fractional energy in a half-line, which provides itself a new feature with respect to the existing literature.

Abstract:This paper presents a conditional convergence result of solutions to the Allen--Cahn equation with arbitrary potentials to a De Giorgi type $ \mathrm{BV} $-solution to multiphase mean curvature flow. Moreover we show that De Giorgi type $\mathrm{BV} $-solutions are De Giorgi type varifold solutions, and thus our solution is unique in a weak-strong sense.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of a time-fractional stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation driven by an additive fractionally integrated Gaussian noise. The model involves a Caputo fractional derivative in time of order $\alpha\in(0,1)$ and a fractional time-integral noise of order $\gamma\in[0,1]$. The numerical scheme approximates the model by a piecewise linear finite element method in space and a convolution quadrature in time (for both time-fractional operators), along with the $L^2$-projection for the noise. We carefully investigate the spatially semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes, and obtain strong convergence rates by using clever energy arguments. The temporal Hölder continuity property of the solution played a key role in the error analysis. Unlike the stochastic Allen--Cahn equation, the presence of the unbounded elliptic operator in front of the cubic nonlinearity in the underlying model adds complexity and challenges to the error analysis. To overcome these difficulties, several new techniques and error estimates are developed. The study concludes with numerical examples that validate the theoretical findings.
