Abstract:We calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the fractal set \begin{equation*} \Big\{\mathtt{x}\in \mathbb{T}^d: \prod_{1\leq i\leq d}|T_{\beta_i}^n(x_i)-x_i| < \psi(n) \text{ for infinitely many } n\in \mathbb{N}\Big\}, \end{equation*} where the $T_{\beta_i}$ is the standard $\beta_i$-transformation with $\beta_i>1$, $\psi$ is a positive function on $\mathbb{N}$ and $|\cdot|$ is the usual metric on the torus $\mathbb{T}$. Moreover, we investigate a modified version of the shrinking target problem, which unifies the shrinking target problems and quantitative recurrence properties for matrix transformations of tori. Let $T$ be a $d\times d$ non-singular matrix with real coefficients. Then, $T$ determines a self-map of the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d:=\mathbb{R}^d / \mathbb{Z}^d$. For any $1\leq i \leq d$, let $\psi_i$ be a positive function on $\mathbb{N}$ and $\Psi(n):=(\psi_1(n),\dots, \psi_d(n))$ with $n\in \mathbb{N}$. We obtain the Hausdorff dimension of the fractal set \begin{equation*} \big\{\mathtt{x}\in \mathbb{T}^d: T^n(x)\in L(f_n(\mathtt{x}), \Psi(n)) \text{ for infinitely many } n\in \mathbb{N}\big\}, \end{equation*} where $L(f_n(\mathtt{x}, \Psi(n)))$ is a hyperrectangle and $\{f_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ is a sequence of Lipschitz vector-valued functions on $\mathbb{T}^d$ with a uniform Lipschitz constant.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an invertible $d\times d$ matrix with integer elements. Then $A$ determines a self-map $T$ of the $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d=\mathbb{R}^d/\mathbb{Z}^d$. Given a real number $\tau>0$, and a sequence $\{z_n\}$ of points in $\mathbb{T}^d$, let $W_\tau$ be the set of points $x\in\mathbb{T}^d$ such that $T^n(x)\in B(z_n,e^{-n\tau})$ for infinitely many $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The Hausdorff dimension of $W_\tau$ has previously been studied by Hill--Velani and Li--Liao--Velani--Zorin. We provide complete results on the Hausdorff dimension of $W_\tau$ for any expanding matrix. For hyperbolic matrices, we compute the dimension of $W_\tau$ only when $A$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix. We give counterexamples to a natural candidate for a dimension formula for general dimension $d$.

Abstract:In this article we aim to investigate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points $x \in [0,1)$ such that for any $r\in\mathbb{N},$ \begin{align*} a_{n+1}(x)a_{n+2}(x)\cdots a_{n+r}(x)\geq e^{\tau(x)(h(x)+\cdots+h(T^{n-1}(x)))} {align*} holds for infinitely many $n\in\mathbb{N},$ where $h$ and $\tau$ are positive continuous functions, $T$ is the Gauss map and $a_n(x)$ denote the $n$th partial quotient of $x$ in its continued fraction expansion. By appropriate choices of $r$, $\tau(x)$ snd $h(x)$ we obtain the classical Jarník-Besicovitch Theorem as well as more recent results by Wang-Wu-Xu, Wang-Wu, Huang-Wu-Xu and Hussain-Kleinbock-Wadleigh-Wang.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal M_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain upper bounds on the number of matrices from $\mathcal M_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, for which the characteristic polynomial has a fixed discriminant $d$. When $d=0$, this corresponds to counting matrices with a repeated eigenvalue, and thus is related to counting non-diagonalisable matrices. For $d\ne 0$, this problem seems not to have been studied previously, while for $d=0$, both our approach and the final result improve on those of A. J. Hetzel, J. S. Liew and K. Morrison (2007).

Abstract:Let $ T\colon[0,1]^d\to [0,1]^d $ be a piecewise expanding map with an absolutely continuous invariant measure $ \mu $. Let $ \{H_n\} $ be a sequence of hyperrectangles or hyperboloids centered at the origin. Denote by $ \mathcal R(\{H_n\}) $ the set of points $ \mathbf x $ such that $ T^n\mathbf x\in \mathbf x+H_n $ for infinitely many $ n\in\mathbb N $, where $ \mathbf x+H_n $ is the translation of $ H_n $. We prove that if $ \mu $ is exponential mixing and the density of $ \mu $ is sufficiently regular, then the $\mu$-measure of $ \mathcal R(\{H_n\}) $ is zero or full according to the sum of the volumes of $ H_n $ converges or not. In the case that $ T $ is a matrix transformation, our results extend a previous work of Kirsebom, Kunde, and Persson [to appear in Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa Cl. Sci., 2023] in two aspects: by allowing the matrix to be non-integer and by allowing the `target' sets $ H_n $ to be hyperrectangles or hyperboloids. We also obtain a dimension result when $ T $ is a diagonal matrix transformation.

Abstract:Motivated by the rich properties and various applications of recurrence relations, we consider the extension of traditional recurrence relations to matrices, where we use matrix multiplication and the Kronecker product to construct matrix sequences. We provide a sharp condition, which when satisfied, guarantees that any fixed-depth matrix recurrence relation defined over a product (with respect to matrix multiplication) will converge to the zero matrix. We also show that the same statement applies to matrix recurrence relations defined over a Kronecker product. Lastly, we show that the dual of this condition, which remains sharp, guarantees the divergence of matrix recurrence relations defined over a consecutive Kronecker product. These results completely determine the stability of nontrivial fixed-depth complex-valued recurrence relations defined over a consecutive product.

On the multiplicity of the eigenvalues of discrete tori

Abstract:It is well known that the standard flat torus $\mathbb{T}^2=\mathbb{R}^2/\Z^2$ has arbitrarily large Laplacian-eigenvalue multiplicities. We prove, however, that $24$ is the optimal upper bound for the multiplicities of the nonzero eigenvalues of a $2$-dimensional discrete torus. For general higher dimension discrete tori, we characterize the eigenvalues with large multiplicities. As consequences, we get uniform boundedness results of the multiplicity for a long range and an optimal global bound for the multiplicity. Our main tool of proof is the theory of vanishing sums of roots of unity.

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points with divergent trajectories on the product of certain homogeneous spaces. The flow is allowed to be weighted with respect to the factors in the product space. The result is derived from its counterpart in Diophantine approximation. In doing this, we introduce a notion of jointly singular matrix tuples, and extend the dimension formula for singular matrices to such matrix tuples.
On Recurrence Relations of Multi-dimensional Sequences

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new algorithm for computing the linear recurrence relations of multi-dimensional sequences. Existing algorithms for computing these relations arise in computational algebra and include constructing structured matrices and computing their kernels. The challenging problem is to reduce the size of the corresponding matrices. In this paper, we show how to convert the problem of computing recurrence relations of multi-dimensional sequences into computing the orthogonal of certain ideals as subvector spaces of the dual module of polynomials. We propose an algorithm using efficient dual module computation algorithms. We present a complexity bound for this algorithm, carry on experiments using Maple implementation, and discuss the cases when using this algorithm is much faster than the existing approaches.

Abstract:Recurrence problems are fundamental in dynamics, and for example, sizes of the set of points recurring infinitely often to a target have been studied extensively in many contexts. For example, the problem of finding the dimension for shrinking target set in an iterated function system is an active research area. In the current work, we consider a set with a finer recurrence quality, the eventually always hitting set. In a sense, the points in the intersection of an eventually always hitting set and a shrinking target set not only return infinitely often but also at a bounded rate. We study this set in the context of self-conformal iterated function systems, and compute upper and lower bounds for its Hausdorff dimension. Additionally, as an intermediate theorem, we obtain a Hausdorff dimension result for the intersection of eventually always hitting and shrinking target sets.
