Abstract:<p>Motivated from the study of eccentricity, center, and sum of eccentricities in graphs and trees, we introduce several new distance-based global and local functions based on the smallest distance from a vertex to some leaf (called the "uniformity" at that vertex). Some natural extremal problems on trees are considered. Then the middle parts of a tree is discussed and compared with the well-known center of a tree. The values of the global functions are also compared with the sum of eccentricities and some sharp bounds are established. Last but not the least, we show that the difference between the eccentricity and the uniformity, when considered as a local function, behaves in a very similar way as the eccentricity itself.</p>

Abstract:The energy of a graph is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of the graph. F. Zhang, H. Li [On acyclic conjugated molecules with minimal energies, Discrete Appl. Math. 92 (1999) 71–84] characterized the trees with a perfect matching having the minimal and the second minimal energies, which solved a conjecture proposed by I. Gutman [Acyclic conjugated molecules, trees and their energies, J. Math. Chem. 1 (1987) 123–143]. In this letter, for a given positive integer d we characterize the tree with the minimal energy having diameter at least d. As a corollary, we also characterize the tree with the minimal Hosoya index having diameter at least d.

Abstract:Given a connected graph $G$, Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}({G})$ measures the average travel time for a random walk to reach a randomly selected vertex. It is known that when an edge is added to $G$, the value of Kemeny's constant may either decrease, increase, or stay the same. In this paper, we present a quantitative analysis of this behaviour when the initial graph is a tree with $n$ vertices. We prove that when an edge is added into a tree on $n$ vertices, the maximum possible increase in Kemeny's constant is roughly $\frac{2}{3}n,$ while the maximum possible decrease is roughly $\frac{3}{16}n^2$. We also identify the trees, and the edges to be added, that correspond to the maximum increase and maximum decrease. Throughout, both matrix theoretic and graph theoretic techniques are employed.

New results in vertex sedentariness

Abstract:A vertex in a graph is said to be sedentary if a quantum state assigned on that vertex tends to stay on that vertex. Under mild conditions, we show that the direct product and join operations preserve vertex sedentariness. We also completely characterize sedentariness in blow-up graphs. These results allow us to construct new infinite families of graphs with sedentary vertices. We prove that a vertex with a twin is either sedentary or admits pretty good state transfer. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of twin vertices that are sedentary, and provide sharp bounds on their sedentariness. As an application, we determine the conditions in which perfect state transfer, pretty good state transfer and sedentariness occur in complete bipartite graphs and threshold graphs of any order.

On the Asymptotic Distributions of Classes of Subtree Additive Properties of Plane Trees under the Nearest Neighbor Thermodynamic Model

Abstract:We define a class of properties on random plane trees, which we call subtree additive properties, inspired by the combinatorics of certain biologically-interesting properties in a plane tree model of RNA secondary structure. The class of subtree additive properties includes the Wiener index and path length (total ladder distance and total ladder contact distance, respectively, in the biological context). We then investigate the asymptotic distribution of these subtree additive properties on a random plane tree distributed according to a Gibbs distribution arising from the Nearest Neighbor Thermodynamic Model for RNA secondary structure. We show that for any property in the class considered, there is a constant that translates the uniformly weighted random variable to the Gibbs distribution weighted random variable (and we provide the constant). We also relate the asymptotic distribution of another class of properties, which we call simple subtree additive properties, to the asymptotic distribution of the path length, both in the uniformly weighted case. The primary proof techniques in this paper come from analytic combinatorics, and most of our results follow from relating the moments of known and unknown distributions and showing that this is sufficient for convergence.

Abstract:The join $X\vee Y$ of two graphs $X$ and $Y$ is the graph obtained by joining each vertex of $X$ to each vertex of $Y$. We explore the behaviour of a continuous quantum walk on a weighted join graph having the adjacency matrix or Laplacian matrix as its associated Hamiltonian. We characterize strong cospectrality, periodicity and perfect state transfer (PST) in a join graph. We also determine conditions in which strong cospectrality, periodicity and PST are preserved in the join. Under certain conditions, we show that there are graphs with no PST that exhibits PST when joined by another graph. This suggests that the join operation is promising in producing new graphs with PST. Moreover, for a periodic vertex in $X$ and $X\vee Y$, we give an expression that relates its minimum periods in $X$ and $X\vee Y$. While the join operation need not preserve periodicity and PST, we show that $\big| |U_M(X\vee Y,t)_{u,v}|-|U_M(X,t)_{u,v}| \big|\leq \frac{2}{|V(X)|}$ for all vertices $u$ and $v$ of $X$, where $U_M(X\vee Y,t)$ and $U_M(X,t)$ denote the transition matrices of $X\vee Y$ and $X$ respectively relative to either the adjacency or Laplacian matrix. We demonstrate that the bound $\frac{2}{|V(X)|}$ is tight for infinite families of graphs.

Abstract:The eccentricity matrix of a connected graph G , denoted by E(G) , is constructed from the distance matrix of G by keeping only the largest nonzero elements in each row and each column and setting the remaining entries as zero. The E -eigenvalues of G are the eigenvalues of E(G) . The eccentricity energy (or the E -energy) of G is the sum of the absolute values of all E -eigenvalues of G . In this article, we determine the unique tree whose second largest E -eigenvalue is minimum among all trees on n vertices other than the star. Then, we characterize the trees with minimum E -energy among all trees on n vertices.

Abstract:The ErdH{o}s-Su0027{o}s Conjecture states that every graph with average degree more than $k-2$ contains all trees of order $k$ as subgraphs. In this paper, we consider a variation of the above conjecture: studying the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(k,l)$-bipartite trees for given integers $nge m$ and $kge l$. In particular, we determine that the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(n,m)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs (or all $(k,2)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs, respectively). Furthermore, all these extremal graphs are characterized.

Abstract:The eccentricity of a vertex v in a graph G is the maximum distance from v to any other vertex. The vertices whose eccentricity are equal to the diameter (the maximum eccentricity) of G are called peripheral vertices. In trees the eccentricity at v can always be achieved by the distance from v to a peripheral vertex. From this observation we are motivated to introduce normality of a vertex v as the minimum distance from v to any peripheral vertex. We consider the properties of the normality as well as the middle part of a tree with respect to this concept. Various related observations are discussed and compared with those related to the eccentricity. Then, analogous to the sum of eccentricities we consider the sum of normalities. After briefly discussing the extremal problems in general graphs we focus on trees and trees under various constraints. As opposed to the path and star in numerous extremal problems, we present several interesting and unexpected extremal structures. Lastly we consider the difference between eccentricity and normality, and the sum of these differences. We also introduce some unsolved problems in the context.
New bounds of extended energy of a graph

Abstract:Extended adjacency matrix of a graph with $n$ vertices is a real symmetric marix of order $n\times n$ whose $(i,j)$-th entry is the average of the ratio of the degree of the vertex $i$ to that of the vertex $j$ and its reciprocal when $i,j$ are adjacent, and zero otherwise. Aggregate of absolute eigenvalues of the extended adjacency matrix is termed as the extended energy. In this paper, the concept of extended vertex energy is introduced and some bounds of extended vertex energy are obtained. From there, we obtain some new upper bounds of the extended energy of a graph. Next, we obtain two inequalities which relate the extended energy with the ordinary graph energy. One of those inequalities resolves a conjecture which states that for every graph, ordinary energy can never exceed the extended energy. Using the relationships of extended energy and ordinary energy, we obtain new bounds of extended energy involving the order, size, largest and smallest degree of the graph. We show that these new bounds are improvements of some existing bounds. Finally, some improved bounds of Nordhaus-Gaddum-type are also found.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 261-276, March 2024. Given two [math]-vertex graphs [math] and [math] of bounded treewidth, is there an [math]-vertex graph [math] of bounded treewidth having subgraphs isomorphic to [math] and [math]? Our main result is a negative answer to this question, in a strong sense: we show that the answer is no even if [math] is a binary tree and [math] is a ternary tree. We also provide an extensive study of cases where such "gluing" is possible. In particular, we prove that if [math] has treewidth [math] and [math] has pathwidth [math], then there is an [math]-vertex graph of treewidth at most [math] containing both [math] and [math] as subgraphs.

Abstract:In this work, the dynamics of a quantum walker on glued trees is revisited to understand the influence of the architecture of the graph on the efficiency of the transfer between the two roots. Instead of considering regular binary trees, we focus our attention on leafier structures where each parent node could give rise to a larger number of children. Through extensive numerical simulations, we uncover a significant dependence of the transfer on the underlying graph architecture, particularly influenced by the branching rate (M) relative to the root degree (N). Our study reveals that the behavior of the walker is isomorphic to that of a particle moving on a finite-size chain. This chain exhibits defects that originate in the specific nature of both the roots and the leaves. Therefore, the energy spectrum of the chain showcases rich features, which lead to diverse regimes for the quantum-state transfer. Notably, the formation of quasi-degenerate localized states due to significant disparities between M and N triggers a localization process on the roots. Through analytical development, we demonstrate that these states play a crucial role in facilitating almost perfect quantum beats between the roots, thereby enhancing the transfer efficiency. Our findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms governing quantum-state transfer on trees, with potential applications for the transfer of quantum information.

Abstract:Gutman and Wagner proposed the concept of the matching energy which is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of the matching polynomial of a graph. And they pointed out that the chemical applications of matching energy go back to the 1970s. Let T be a tree with n vertices. In this paper, we characterize the trees whose complements have the maximal, second-maximal and minimal matching energy. Furthermore, we determine the trees with edge-independence number p whose complements have the minimum matching energy for p = 1, 2, . . . , [n/2]. When we restrict our consideration to all trees with a perfect matching, we determine the trees whose complements have the second-maximal matching energy.

Abstract:Let the join of two graphs be the union of two disjoint graphs connected by $j$ edges in a one-to-one manner. In previous work by Gyurov and Pinzon, which generalized the work of Badura and Rara, the determinant of the two joined graphs was decomposed to sums of determinants of these graphs with vertex deletions or directed graph handles. In this paper, we define a homomorphism from a quotient of graphs with the join operation to the monoid of integer matrices. We find the necessary and sufficient properties of a graph so that joining to any another graph will not change its determinant. We also demonstrate through examples that this decomposition allows us to more easily calculate determinants of chains of joined graphs. This paper begins the process of finding the algebraic structure of the monoid.

Abstract:For a family of linear preferential attachment graphs, we provide rates of convergence for the total variation distance between the degree of a randomly chosen vertex and an appropriate power law distribution as the number of vertices tends to ∞. Our proof uses a new formulation of Stein's method for the negative binomial distribution, which stems from a distributional transformation that has the negative binomial distributions as the only fixed points.

Almost zero transfer in continuous-time quantum walks on weighted tree graphs

Abstract:We study the probability flux on the central vertex in continuous-time quantum walks on weighted tree graphs. In a weighted graph, each edge has a weight we call hopping. This hopping sets the jump rate of the particle between the vertices connected by the edge. Here, the edges of the central vertex (root) have a hopping parameter $J$ larger than those of the other edges. For star graphs, this hopping gives only how often the walker visits the central vertex over time. However, for weighted spider graphs $S_{n,2}$ and $S_{n,3}$, the probability on the central vertex drops with $J^2$ for walks starting from a state of any superposition of leaf vertices. We map Cayley trees $C_{3,2}$ and $C_{3,3}$ into these spider graphs and observe the same dependency. Our results suggest this is a general feature of such walks on weighted trees and a way of probing decoherence effects in an open quantum system context.

Abstract:Given a tree T and a vertex v in T, the number of subtrees of T containing v is denoted by ηT(v) and called the subtree number at v. Similarly, ηT(u,v) denotes the number of subtrees of T that contain both u and v. Motivated from the distance function and the eccentricity at a vertex, we study the eccentric subtree number at a vertex v in T, defined as ηTecc(v)=minu∈V(T)ηT(v,u). This concept provides us a new perspective in the study of the well-known correlation between the distance and the subtree numbers. We will present properties of the eccentric subtree number analogous to those related to the eccentricity and center of a tree, as well as some extremal results with respect to the eccentric subtree number and sum of eccentric subtree numbers in a tree. Some open problems for further study are also proposed.

Abstract:We study randomly growing trees governed by the affine preferential attachment rule. Starting with a seed tree $S$, vertices are attached one by one, each linked by an edge to a random vertex of the current tree, chosen with a probability proportional to an affine function of its degree. This yields a one-parameter family of preferential attachment trees $(T_n^S)_{n\geq|S|}$, of which the linear model is a particular case. Depending on the choice of the parameter, the power-laws governing the degrees in $T_n^S$ have different exponents. We study the problem of the asymptotic influence of the seed $S$ on the law of $T_n^S$. We show that, for any two distinct seeds $S$ and $S'$, the laws of $T_n^S$ and $T_n^{S'}$ remain at uniformly positive total-variation distance as $n$ increases. This is a continuation of Curien et al. (2015), which in turn was inspired by a conjecture of Bubeck et al. (2015). The technique developed here is more robust than previous ones and is likely to help in the study of more general attachment mechanisms.
